gstatic.com is Google’s static-resource domain family. Google and other websites use its subdomains to deliver shared files such as JavaScript, stylesheets, images, fonts and map components. Chrome and Android may also contact a gstatic endpoint to test whether a network reaches the internet or has a captive-portal sign-in page.

Seeing a gstatic hostname in browser history, developer tools, DNS logs or a firewall report usually means another page, Google service or device feature loaded a resource in the background. It is infrastructure rather than a consumer product, so the exact subdomain and path matter more than the parent domain alone. Blocking it indiscriminately can break Google Cloud Console, Google Maps features, page styling or network-status checks.

What is gstatic.com used for?

Google uses gstatic.com to host reusable, mostly static files that its products and web developers can request separately from the main Google websites. The domain family helps deliver scripts, CSS files, images, fonts and other dependencies without putting every asset on a product’s primary hostname.

Google Cloud’s domain requirements identify www.gstatic.com for static content such as scripts, style sheets and images, ssl.gstatic.com for images, and fonts.gstatic.com for fonts. Google Maps documentation separately lists maps.gstatic.com and fonts.gstatic.com as static dependencies. Android and Chrome can use connectivitycheck.gstatic.com for network reachability and captive-portal detection.

A browser therefore may contact gstatic.com even when you never type that name into the address bar. A news page using Google Fonts, a page embedding a map, Google Cloud Console, or a phone joining Wi-Fi can all generate the request automatically.

Which gstatic subdomains might appear in a log?

The subdomain usually tells you more about the request than gstatic.com by itself. Use the hostname, full path, resource type and initiating application together when diagnosing it.

Hostname Typical role What can trigger it Likely effect if unavailable
www.gstatic.com Shared scripts, style sheets and images Google web services and sites that use Google-hosted assets Missing interface elements, styling or other static content
ssl.gstatic.com Image delivery Google services that reference images on this host Images or image-based interface elements may not load
fonts.gstatic.com Web-font files Google Fonts and pages embedding those fonts Text falls back to a different font; layout can change
maps.gstatic.com Google Maps JavaScript static dependencies Maps JavaScript API components Map controls, labels or other map UI can fail
connectivitycheck.gstatic.com Network reachability or captive-portal check Chrome or Android when joining or evaluating a network A misleading no-internet warning or a prompt to complete Wi-Fi sign-in

This is a functional guide, not a permanent allowlist. Google says Maps dependencies can change as features roll out, so a hostname list that works today may need review after a product update.

Why is gstatic.com in my browser history or firewall log?

A resource request can be recorded even though you did not navigate to gstatic.com. The browser records the host that supplied a file, while a DNS resolver or firewall records the lookup and connection made by the page, app or operating system.

Common causes

  • A site loads a Google Font through a CSS file, which then fetches the font from fonts.gstatic.com.
  • A page embeds a Google Maps component and requests dependencies from maps.gstatic.com or font files from fonts.gstatic.com.
  • A Google service loads shared scripts, styles or images from www.gstatic.com or ssl.gstatic.com.
  • Chrome or Android tests a newly joined network through connectivitycheck.gstatic.com.

History may show only the hostname, not the page that caused it. A firewall entry can likewise be detached from the visible page if a background tab, an embedded frame or an operating-system service made the request.

How to identify the initiator in Chrome

  1. Open the page or app behavior that coincides with the request.
  2. In desktop Chrome, open the menu and choose More tools then Developer tools, and select the Network panel. Labels can vary slightly by Chrome release.
  3. Reload the page, enter gstatic.com in the Network filter, and select a matching request.
  4. Inspect the full hostname and path, the request type, status code and the Initiator or request-chain information. This often identifies the page script, Maps component or font stylesheet that caused it.
  5. For a device or perimeter firewall, compare the timestamp with Wi-Fi association, captive-portal events, browser launches and Google service usage.

The exact host and path are important. A legitimate request to a documented gstatic subdomain does not prove that every other domain loaded by the same page is trustworthy.

Is gstatic.com safe?

Normal traffic to Google’s documented gstatic subdomains is expected when a Google product or a website using Google-hosted resources is operating. The domain is infrastructure, not a download catalogue or a site that you need to browse to for ordinary use.

Safety still depends on context. Check the complete hostname rather than accepting a look-alike domain, and check which page, app or system component initiated the connection. A request to fonts.gstatic.com while a page loads a Google Font is materially different from an unfamiliar executable download or a connection to an unrelated domain that merely contains the word gstatic.

Security tools should therefore record the full DNS name, path, protocol, process and initiating page where possible. Do not treat a broad wildcard allow rule as proof that all traffic associated with a page is safe, and do not use the presence of one legitimate gstatic request to approve unrelated requests.

What is connectivitycheck.gstatic.com?

connectivitycheck.gstatic.com is used by Chrome and Android to determine whether a network can reach the internet or whether a captive portal is intercepting access. Captive portals are the sign-in or acceptance pages found on some hotels, airports, schools and public Wi-Fi networks.

When the check receives the expected response, the device can mark the connection as having internet access. If the response is redirected, blocked or replaced by a sign-in page, Android or Chrome may show a no-internet warning or ask you to complete the network’s login process. The request is a network test; it does not mean you intentionally visited a Google page.

What to do when a Wi-Fi warning appears

  1. Open the network’s notification or browser sign-in page and complete any required terms or authentication.
  2. If no portal appears, disconnect and reconnect, then retry while temporarily disabling a local DNS filter or firewall rule that blocks the connectivity-check hostname.
  3. Test another network. If the warning occurs only on one Wi-Fi network, its gateway, DNS service or captive portal is the more likely cause.
  4. After signing in, verify that ordinary websites load. A successful connectivity check does not guarantee that every destination is reachable.

How does Google Maps use gstatic.com?

Google Maps’ JavaScript API can request static dependencies from maps.gstatic.com and fonts.gstatic.com. Google’s documentation says that this dependency list can change as features roll out and recommends reviewing it regularly. A firewall that blocks those hosts may leave a map partly rendered, remove controls or prevent a component from starting.

Why a map image is not necessarily served by gstatic.com

The Maps Static API generates an image from URL parameters. Google describes it as a way to embed a Google Maps image in an HTML img element without JavaScript or dynamic page loading. Using that API requires an enabled project, a billing account and credentials. The generated image is an API response; it should not be confused with the static dependency files delivered from maps.gstatic.com.

This distinction matters when troubleshooting. A broken JavaScript map may be caused by a blocked dependency, while a static map image may fail because the API project, billing setup, credentials or request parameters are wrong.

Does gstatic.com collect personal data?

Privacy depends on the product making the request and the type of resource. Google’s Google Fonts privacy statement, published November 18, 2022 and modified March 2, 2023, says the Web API is designed to limit collection, storage and use. It states that Google does not use the service to create profiles of end users or for advertising.

Serving a font still requires the requesting server to receive an IP address so it can return the file. That statement applies to the Google Fonts service; it should not be generalized automatically to every Google product or every request on every gstatic subdomain. If privacy is a requirement, identify the specific product, review its current documentation and consider whether locally hosted assets are appropriate for your site.

Can I block gstatic.com?

You can block individual gstatic hostnames, but a blanket block is usually the wrong first step. Identify the feature making the request, then allow the minimum documented hosts it needs or accept the specific function that will be lost.

Potential consequences

Blocked request Possible result Better response
Google Cloud static assets The Cloud Console may not function as expected. Google explicitly warns that blocking required domains can stop the console from working. Use Google Cloud’s current domain requirements and permit the required hosts for the console users.
Maps JavaScript dependencies Map controls, labels or related interface elements may be missing. Review the current Maps dependency list and test every map feature after a rule change.
Google Fonts files Pages use fallback fonts, changing appearance or line wrapping. Permit the font host or have the site owner serve an approved local font instead.
Connectivity-check endpoint Devices may report no internet or fail to open a captive-portal prompt automatically. Allow the check on managed Wi-Fi, or provide another documented portal-detection workflow.

For an enterprise firewall, use a narrow rule based on the required hostname and destination, document which application depends on it, and retest after browser, Android, Cloud Console or Maps updates. Google’s Cloud documentation, updated October 22, 2026, warns that blocked required domains prevent expected console operation; Maps documentation likewise notes that dependency requirements change.

How should I troubleshoot a blocked or failing gstatic request?

Work from the symptom to the dependency instead of adding every Google domain to an allowlist.

  1. Capture the exact request. Record the full subdomain, path, time, status or error, device and network. A short hostname-only log is often insufficient.
  2. Find the requester. Use browser Network details, application logs or firewall process information to determine whether the requester is a page, Google service, Android or Chrome.
  3. Classify the resource. Decide whether it is a font, script, image, Maps dependency or connectivity response. The resource type predicts the user-visible failure.
  4. Compare networks. Reproduce on a different connection. A failure limited to a corporate or public network points toward DNS filtering, proxy policy or captive-portal interception.
  5. Check policy layers. Review browser extensions, endpoint security, DNS filtering, proxy authentication, TLS inspection and firewall rules. Multiple layers can produce the same timeout.
  6. Make the smallest change. Temporarily permit the identified host or correct the portal rule, then retest the exact feature. Avoid replacing a narrow diagnosis with a wildcard exception.
  7. Monitor after updates. Maps and other Google services can add dependencies, so keep an owner and review date for allowlist rules.

Symptoms and likely interpretations

Symptom Most useful first check
Text looks different on one site Look for failed requests to fonts.gstatic.com and compare the page’s CSS font declarations.
Map frame is blank or controls are missing Inspect maps.gstatic.com requests, then verify the site’s Maps configuration separately.

What should website owners and network administrators know?

Website owners should treat gstatic as a third-party dependency with a defined purpose, not as an unexplained URL copied into a permanent allowlist. Document whether the site uses Google Fonts, Maps JavaScript, a Google service widget or another shared asset, and decide whether the dependency is acceptable for performance, privacy and availability requirements.

Network administrators should maintain product-specific rules. Google Cloud’s list applies to the Cloud Console, while Maps has its own static-dependency guidance. A rule that permits one product does not necessarily satisfy another, and a rule that worked before a feature rollout may become incomplete.

When a service must work during an outage or under strict egress controls, plan a tested fallback: locally hosted fonts where licensing permits, a noninteractive map placeholder, or a documented captive-portal process. Do not assume that copying a single image or script locally reproduces all of a dynamic Google product’s functions.

Is gstatic.com a product I need to sign in to?

No. Gstatic is a delivery domain used behind the scenes by Google products and by third-party pages that embed Google resources. Users normally interact with the requesting page, map, console or device network screen rather than with gstatic.com itself.

If a log contains a gstatic hostname, investigate the requesting feature and the exact path. That produces a useful diagnosis; treating the parent domain as a standalone destination does not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I delete gstatic.com entries from my browser history or cache?

Yes. Removing history only removes the local record, and clearing cached files forces the browser to download needed resources again. It does not stop a page, app or device from requesting the same dependency in the future.

Why does a site contact fonts.gstatic.com when it is not a Google site?

A site can include Google Fonts in its stylesheet even when the site itself is operated by someone else. The page then asks the font host for the font file, so the request appears under gstatic.com while the visible page remains on another domain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does a gstatic request fail only on my work network?

Corporate DNS filtering, proxy authentication, TLS inspection or an egress rule may be blocking the specific host or response. Compare the same feature on another connection and give your administrator the full hostname, path, timestamp and initiating application rather than only the parent domain.

Does blocking gstatic improve privacy?

Blocking one host can stop one category of third-party request, but it can also break fonts, maps, console functions or connectivity detection. First identify the product and data flow involved; for Google Fonts, Google’s published statement says it does not use the service to build end-user profiles or for advertising, while the font server still receives the requester’s IP address.
