GTA VI’s Vice City is Rockstar’s fictionalized Miami, while the wider fictional state of Leonida is its satirical version of Florida. The announced setting stretches from South Beach-style city blocks to island chains, wetlands, rural communities and protected uplands. Those places are recognizable references, not a 1:1 digital survey: Rockstar compresses distances, rearranges landmarks and changes names, buildings and street plans for the game.
Vice City is Miami; Leonida is Florida
Vice City has been Grand Theft Auto’s Miami analogue since the 2002 game. GTA VI keeps that identity but expands the frame. Instead of treating the city as the whole setting, Rockstar places it inside Leonida, a fictional state modeled on Florida’s geography and culture.

Rockstar’s Rob Nelson described the premise in a 2026 interview with EL PAÍS: “La aventura se desarrolla en Vice City, dentro del ficticio Estado de Leonida, una versión deformada de Florida.” In English, the statement says the adventure takes place in Vice City, within the fictional state of Leonida, a distorted version of Florida. “Distorted” is the important qualifier: Leonida is designed to feel like Florida without reproducing its legal borders, county map or exact coastline.
The announced regions and their likely real-world anchors
| GTA VI region | Real-world reference | What establishes the connection | How literal the match is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vice City | Miami and South Florida | The series’ established Miami analogue, plus trailer views of South Beach, causeways, Brickell and Wynwood | Recognizable visual and cultural references; not an exact street map |
| Leonida Keys | Florida Keys | Rockstar’s official region name and imagery of islands, bridges, marinas and low-rise coastal development | A fictionalized island chain; no official island-by-island overlay |
| Grassrivers | The Everglades and other South Florida wetlands | Rockstar’s region name and trailer imagery featuring airboats, alligators and wetland scenery | A condensed game region, not a navigable copy of Everglades National Park |
| Port Gellhorn | Possibly Gulf-coast or resort Florida | Officially named by Rockstar, with broader Florida geography as the context | Specific county or city match has not been confirmed |
| Ambrosia | Possibly rural or interior Florida | Officially named by Rockstar | Its detailed real-world counterpart remains unconfirmed |
| Mount Kalaga National Park | Florida’s park and upland environments | Included in Rockstar’s wider Leonida presentation | Interpretive comparison, not an announced one-to-one park match |
What in Vice City is based on Miami?
The clearest references are concentrated in the city’s coastal and central districts. Trailer comparisons by Axios identify South Beach and Ocean Drive’s Art Deco hotel strip, the Venetian and MacArthur causeways, Brickell, Wynwood and other recognizable Miami elements.

South Beach and Ocean Drive
Ocean Drive’s pastel façades, rooftop signage, narrow beachside blocks and dense concentration of hotels provide the visual shorthand most associated with Vice City. The Art Deco Historic District is known for streamlined façades, curved corners, porthole windows, horizontal bands and vivid color. GTA VI uses that architectural language as an immediately readable backdrop for nightlife, tourism and street-level satire.
That resemblance does not mean every hotel in the game is a named Miami property. Rockstar can combine several façades, alter heights and move a building to create a better playable street. Daniel Ciraldo, executive director of the Miami Design Preservation League, told Axios that the architecture looked very realistic while noting that some buildings were out of order or appeared on the wrong block.
Causeways and the bay crossing
Miami’s causeways are another strong anchor. The Venetian Causeway links Miami with Miami Beach through a chain of small islands, while the MacArthur Causeway provides a major connection between downtown and South Beach. Their low bridges, water views, palms, marinas and skyline approaches are easy to recognize in trailer footage and explain why Vice City feels like a city split between mainland towers and barrier-island resorts.

In a game map, those crossings also solve a design problem: they turn a real geographic relationship into memorable routes between districts. Expect the game’s bridges to preserve the idea of Miami’s bay connections while changing their lengths, exits and surrounding blocks.
Brickell and the modern skyline
Brickell supplies a different era of Miami imagery. The district’s glass towers, hotels, apartment buildings and financial identity contrast with Ocean Drive’s low-rise Art Deco strip. Including both areas lets GTA VI move between old tourist Miami and the contemporary high-rise city without leaving Vice City.
The skyline should be read as a cluster of references rather than a promise that each tower occupies its real address. A recognizable silhouette may be assembled from several Miami buildings, and the playable route can place districts closer together than they are in reality.

Wynwood and the art-and-nightlife layer
Wynwood is associated with large-scale murals, converted industrial buildings, galleries, bars and a nightlife economy built around visual spectacle. Its presence gives Vice City a contemporary cultural layer that did not exist in the same form when the 2002 game was made. In GTA VI, brightly painted walls and redeveloped warehouse streets help connect the city’s older tourist image to its social-media-era identity.

Is Leonida Keys a recreation of the Florida Keys?
Leonida Keys is Rockstar’s fictional island chain and the obvious counterpart to the Florida Keys. The connection comes from both the official name and the setting’s physical vocabulary: long bridges and causeways, marinas, shallow coastal water, small islands and predominantly low-rise development.
The real Florida Keys form a long arc south of the Florida peninsula, with communities spread across islands that differ in density and landscape. GTA VI can compress that journey into a practical sequence of islands and roads. A location that would take hours to reach in reality may be only minutes from Vice City in the game, and several real islands may be represented by one composite area.
Rockstar has not published a complete island-by-island correspondence. Therefore, a trailer view that resembles Key West, Marathon or another Keys community should be labeled a visual comparison, not an official identification. The safest conclusion is that Leonida Keys captures the Florida Keys’ overall atmosphere and infrastructure rather than reproducing every island.
What the Keys reference adds to the setting
- Bridges as landmarks: long water crossings create clear transitions between city, open sea and smaller settlements.
- Marina culture: docks, charter boats and waterfront businesses support the boating life associated with the real Keys.
- Low-rise coastal development: the contrast with Brickell’s towers makes the state feel geographically broad.
- Tourism with a rough edge: the Keys’ vacation image fits GTA’s habit of placing glamour beside hustles, scams and crime.
Grassrivers is Rockstar’s Everglades-inspired wetland
Grassrivers is the clearest name for GTA VI’s wetland country. Trailer imagery discussed by Axios shows airboats, alligators and broad marsh landscapes, all strong indicators of the Everglades and the wider wetlands of South Florida.

Grassrivers should therefore be treated as a condensed fictional region inspired by the Everglades, not as a complete recreation of Everglades National Park.

Why airboats and alligators matter
Airboats are a practical and cultural signal. Their shallow-draft design allows travel across marshy water where conventional boats would run aground, and their loud propellers are part of the popular image of South Florida wetlands. Alligators perform a similar signaling role: they establish that the player has left urban Vice City for a landscape governed by water, wildlife and limited access.
Those details also support GTA’s tonal contrast. A tourist may see an airboat excursion; a criminal crew may see a route for moving people or goods away from city surveillance. The real-world reference supplies the environment, while the series’ fiction supplies the danger and satire.
What are Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga based on?
Rockstar officially names Port Gellhorn and Ambrosia, and its broader Leonida presentation includes Mount Kalaga National Park. Available official material establishes them as fictional GTA VI regions, but it does not confirm a specific Florida county, town or park for each one.
Port Gellhorn
Port Gellhorn can reasonably be compared with Florida’s Gulf-coast towns, working waterfronts or resort communities because those environments broaden Leonida beyond Miami’s Atlantic-facing identity. That is an interpretation based on the state-level setting, not a confirmed map match. Avoid treating the name as proof that Rockstar copied a particular Gulf city.
Ambrosia
Ambrosia appears to represent another part of Leonida outside the core city and islands. Rural interior Florida, small-town commercial strips and agricultural or industrial landscapes are plausible reference points, but Rockstar has not supplied enough detail to identify one real place. The region’s function in the map is more certain than its exact inspiration: it helps make Leonida feel like a state rather than a single metropolitan area.
Mount Kalaga National Park
Florida is not known for alpine mountains, so the name should not be read as evidence of a real mountain range. It may describe an elevated park, rugged terrain or a stylized natural area within Rockstar’s fictional geography. Comparisons to Florida’s state parks and upland environments are useful at the level of landscape and recreation, but no official statement identifies a specific real-world park.

How the 2002 Vice City shapes GTA VI
The new game is not starting from a blank map. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, released in 2002, placed players in a heavily stylized 1986 Miami and drew on the era’s crime cinema and television. Documented influences included Miami Vice, Scarface and Carlito’s Way, while Rockstar teams conducted field-research trips to Miami.
That earlier game established a formula: neon nightlife, beaches, pastel architecture, fast boats, organized crime and a comic but dark view of the city’s aspirational image. Producer Leslie Benzies described Miami as “a party town, all sun and sea and sex, but with that same dark edge underneath.” GTA VI carries that idea forward while changing the period and the social details.
From an explicitly 1986 lens to contemporary Florida
The 2002 title used period music, fashion, cars and politics to make the 1980s part of the subject. GTA VI instead presents a contemporary Florida satire. That shift allows Rockstar to address influencer culture, viral spectacle, modern policing, luxury development and the way people perform their lives online, while retaining the city’s older associations with nightlife and crime.
The result is continuity rather than a simple remake. The same Miami foundation remains, but the state around it is larger and the cultural targets have changed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which cultural influences sit behind the map?
Physical geography explains where Vice City looks like Miami; cultural influences explain why it behaves like GTA’s Miami. The setting combines several layers:
- Nightlife and Art Deco: hotels, clubs, neon signs and beach promenades turn tourism into a stage for status and excess.
- Latin and Caribbean influence: South Florida’s multilingual, transnational cultural environment informs the city’s social texture, music and businesses without reducing the region to one stereotype.
- Crime fiction: the legacy of Miami Vice, Scarface and Carlito’s Way supplies stories about ambition, loyalty, money and violence.
- Florida spectacle: wildlife, boats, theme-like attractions, luxury property and eccentric public behavior support the series’ comic exaggeration.
- Contemporary media: social platforms and viral attention provide a modern way for characters and institutions to perform themselves.
In the 2026 EL PAÍS interview, Nelson also cited “the stories of Miami” and crime-fiction writers Elmore Leonard and Charles Willeford as influences on the story world. That places GTA VI in a broader Florida crime tradition, not only in the visual tradition of the earlier game.

How accurate is the GTA VI map compared with real Florida?
There is no authoritative percentage measuring GTA VI’s geographic fidelity. The available evidence is qualitative: official region names, trailer imagery, comparisons by a Miami architectural expert and creator comments about Florida and Miami. Any claim that the map is, for example, 40% or 80% accurate would be invented precision.
| Question | Best-supported answer |
|---|---|
| Is Vice City Miami? | It is Rockstar’s fictionalized Miami analogue, with recognizable South Florida landmarks and districts. |
| Is Leonida the entire state of Florida? | It is a fictional state described by Rockstar as a distorted version of Florida, not a legal or cartographic copy. |
| Are the Keys reproduced 1:1? | No official island-by-island mapping has been published; the region is a compressed fictional counterpart. |
| Is Grassrivers Everglades National Park? | It is Everglades-inspired wetland country, not an announced recreation of the park’s exact boundaries or trails. |
| Are buildings in their real locations? | Some visual references are recognizable, but comparisons note that buildings can be out of order or on the wrong block. |
| Can every named region be matched to a Florida county? | No. Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga have confirmed fictional names but no complete official real-world overlay. |
How to identify a real-world reference without overclaiming
When comparing a trailer frame or in-game location with Florida, use the strength of the evidence rather than treating resemblance as proof.
- Start with Rockstar’s named regions. Vice City, Leonida Keys and Grassrivers are official fictional names. Their broad analogues are well established by the setting and imagery.
- Look for multiple matching features. A causeway, skyline, beach orientation and architectural style together make a stronger Miami comparison than one isolated palm tree or sign.
- Separate landmark identity from placement. A façade may clearly echo Ocean Drive while being moved to a different block for gameplay.
- Label inference honestly. Use “inspired by,” “resembles” or “can be read as” for comparisons that Rockstar has not confirmed.
- Do not infer a 1:1 scale. Distances, coastlines and travel times are design choices. A compressed map can preserve the relationships that matter while discarding real-world scale.
Common misconceptions about Vice City and Leonida
“GTA VI is set only in Miami.”
Vice City is the principal city, but Leonida includes islands, wetlands and other regions. The state-level setting is one of the major expansions beyond the 2002 game.
“Every Florida location has a direct GTA name.”
Only some regions have been officially named. A visual resemblance to a real town does not establish that Rockstar used its exact name or boundaries.
“The map is a 1:1 version of Miami and the Keys.”
Recognizable references coexist with rearranged buildings and compressed geography. The game aims for a convincing sense of place, not survey-grade accuracy.
“Grassrivers is just generic swamp scenery.”
The combination of airboats, alligators and wetland vistas points specifically toward the Everglades and South Florida wetlands, even though the playable region is fictional.
“The 2002 game’s 1986 setting tells us exactly when GTA VI occurs.”
The earlier title’s period is explicit; GTA VI shifts to a contemporary Florida satire. Its exact calendar year and every real-world event it references should not be assumed from the 1986 game.

Rockstar has not released a complete real-world overlay showing which Florida roads, islands, buildings or counties correspond to every part of Leonida. It has also not published a percentage for map accuracy or confirmed exact counterparts for Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. Until it does, the most reliable reading is geographic and thematic: Vice City draws from Miami, Leonida draws from Florida, the Keys and Grassrivers draw from their obvious regional counterparts, and the rest should be treated as informed interpretation.
That approach explains why the setting can feel authentic without being a copy. Rockstar preserves the visual anchors that make South Florida immediately legible, then reshapes them into a connected game world where a downtown tower, a causeway, an island marina and an alligator-filled wetland can all support the same story.
