hackmon.exe is normally the UnHackMe Monitor from Greatis Software, not a core Windows component. An expected copy is normally installed with UnHackMe under a Program FilesUnHackMe folder and may start with Windows to handle scheduled scans, update checks and quick access to the security program. The filename alone does not prove that a copy is safe, however. A renamed, copied or repackaged program can use the same name. Why is hackmon.exe running when Windows starts?
UnHackMe uses the monitor to remain available for scheduled work and update notifications. BleepingComputer records hackmon.exe as a startup entry launched through Windows Run or RunOnce-style registry locations. That startup registration explains why it can appear in Task Manager immediately after sign-in.
A startup entry by itself is not evidence of malware. First determine whether the command points to the UnHackMe installation you chose and whether the monitor behaves as expected. If you never installed UnHackMe, or if the command points to a temporary or user-profile folder, treat the entry as untrusted until scans and further investigation say otherwise.

Is hackmon.exe safe?
Safety is an identity-and-context question, not a conclusion based on the filename. Use all of the following checks together:
- Open the file location. In Task Manager, right-click the hackmon.exe process and choose Open file location. Record the complete path, including the drive letter and every folder.
- Confirm the owning application. Check whether UnHackMe is installed in Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11 and 10) or in Control Panel > Programs and Features on older Windows versions. If you intentionally installed it, the process has a plausible owner; if not, do not assume the file is legitimate.

A 2024 Gridinsoft analysis of one hackmon.exe hash attributed to Greatis/UnHackMe reported a 7% detection rate. That figure applies only to that specific sample and the date of that analysis. It does not establish that every legitimate UnHackMe installation is malicious, nor does it prove that every file with the name hackmon.exe is safe. The report also contains conflicting signature-status fields, so local path, signer, source and current scans should be considered together.
There is no authoritative prevalence figure, universal malware verdict or error-rate statistic for every file named hackmon.exe. Avoid treating a single online result as a substitute for checking the copy on your computer.

How can you tell an expected monitor from a suspicious copy?
Use this comparison before allowing the process, disabling it or deleting anything.

How do you fix hackmon.exe errors when you want to keep UnHackMe?
When the file belongs to an installation you intended to keep, start with the least disruptive repair: update the application, then restart the monitor. Do not download a replacement hackmon.exe from a random file site.
1. Update UnHackMe from its trusted publisher source
- Close any UnHackMe windows that are open.
- Obtain the current installer or update through the publisher’s trusted distribution channel.
- Install the update over the existing installation, accepting the normal Windows permission prompt.
- Restart Windows and check whether the error, missing tray icon or failed scheduled action has stopped.

- If the tray icon has disappeared, Greatis instructs users to run
unhackmeschedule.exeas administrator and then restart the computer.
End only the process that you have verified belongs to your UnHackMe installation. Ending an unrelated executable with the same name will not repair the real problem and could interrupt another program.
3. Check startup registration after the restart
Open Task Manager and select the Startup apps tab. Confirm that the entry’s command still points to the verified UnHackMe folder. If the command references a file that no longer exists, note the exact location before changing it; an orphaned entry can be left after an incomplete uninstall or a failed update.

How do you remove hackmon.exe when you no longer want UnHackMe?
If UnHackMe is unnecessary, remove the owning application rather than deleting only the executable. Deleting the file by hand can leave Run or RunOnce entries, scheduled tasks or other components that continue to produce errors.
- On Windows 11 or 10, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find UnHackMe, open its menu and select Uninstall.

Can you disable hackmon.exe at startup?
You can disable a verified UnHackMe startup entry in Task Manager’s Startup apps tab, but doing so changes how UnHackMe operates. The monitor may no longer run scheduled scans, check for updates or provide its quick-access features until you launch the application manually or re-enable the entry.

What if hackmon.exe uses high CPU, memory or disk activity?
First verify that the process is the signed file in the expected UnHackMe directory. A legitimate monitor may perform scheduled work, so brief activity around a scan or update is different from unexplained, continuous load.
