isoburn.exe is Windows Disc Image Burner, the built-in component that writes an ISO image to a recordable CD or DVD. The normal copy is %windir%System32isoburn.exe, and a valid Microsoft digital signature is an important safety check. Errors usually come from the disc, optical drive, ISO file, file association, an overlapping burn session, or damaged Windows components—not from a mysterious standalone download. This guide shows how to verify the file, burn an image, restore the missing Burn disc image command, repair Windows, and decide when a hardware or malware investigation is warranted.

What does isoburn.exe do?

Windows Disc Image Burner uses isoburn.exe to write an ISO image to writable optical media. An ISO is a sector-by-sector image of a disc; burning it creates the bootable or data disc represented by that image rather than copying the single ISO file as ordinary data.

On a normal Windows installation, Explorer calls the program when you right-click an .iso file and choose Burn disc image. You can also launch it directly and supply the ISO path. It is a Windows component, not a third-party downloader that you need to install separately.

The executable is only the software part of the process. It does not emulate a DVD writer, convert an ISO into a USB installer, or make incompatible media usable. Windows must detect a recordable optical drive, the drive must support the disc type, and the image must be complete enough to read throughout the burn. If any of those conditions is missing, repairing the executable will not solve the failure.

Where should isoburn.exe be, and how can I check whether it is safe?

Start with the complete path. The expected location is %windir%System32isoburn.exe (normally C:WindowsSystem32isoburn.exe). On 64-bit Windows, some process references also report a copy under %windir%SysWOW64isoburn.exe; treat that as supporting context and verify the file on your own computer rather than assuming every copy is genuine.

Check the path in Task Manager or Explorer

  1. If the process is running, open Task Manager, find Windows Disc Image Burner or isoburn.exe, right-click it, and choose Open file location.
  2. For a file you found elsewhere, right-click it, choose Properties, and record the Location shown on the General tab.
  3. A copy outside the Windows directory deserves investigation. The path alone is not proof of malware, but it removes one of the strongest signs that the file is the built-in component.

Check the filename carefully. Malware can use a familiar name with a small spelling change, such as an extra character, or place a copy in a user profile, temporary folder, or downloads directory. Do not rely on the process name shown in a pop-up; open the file location and inspect the actual executable.

Validate the Microsoft signature

In the file’s Properties window, open Digital Signatures, select the signer, and choose Details. Windows should report that the signature is valid. Microsoft explains that signature verification checks whether a file was altered after signing and whether it comes from a trusted source.

If SignTool is installed with the Windows SDK, an appropriately configured elevated or normal Command Prompt can run:

signtool verify /pa isoburn.exe

Run the command from the directory containing the file, or provide its full path. A successful verification supports the file’s origin and integrity at signing time; it does not prove that every process using the name is legitimate. Check the path and current behavior as well.

A missing, failed, or unknown signer is a reason to investigate, not an automatic verdict. Run a Microsoft Defender full scan, and use Microsoft Defender Offline when you suspect a process is masquerading as the system file. Do not download a replacement isoburn.exe from an unofficial DLL site. A replacement copied from the web may be modified, mismatched to your Windows build, or bundled with unwanted software.

Why is isoburn.exe running?

The normal reason is that you opened an ISO’s context menu and started a burn. It can remain active while Windows prepares the image, writes data, and closes the session; it should normally exit when the operation finishes. A failed burn, a second burn started before the first one completes, or an application that repeatedly invokes the file can leave an unexpected process behind.

If you did not start a burn, check the executable’s path and signature first. Then review recently installed software and startup activity, and scan with Defender. A process that appears only when an ISO is opened is consistent with normal use; one that launches at startup, runs from a user-writable folder, or repeatedly accesses the drive without your action warrants closer examination.

Do not kill a process that is actively writing a disc unless the dialog is clearly stuck and you accept that the media may become unusable. During writing and finalization, abruptly ending the process can leave an incomplete disc. If the application has stopped responding, allow the drive activity to cease, close the dialog normally if possible, and use fresh media for the next attempt.

What do I need before burning an ISO?

  • A Windows-detected writable CD/DVD drive. A read-only optical drive cannot record an image.
  • Blank, compatible media. Microsoft’s DVD-creation instructions specify a blank DVD and a DVD burner; use suitable dual-layer media when the image exceeds a single-layer disc’s capacity.
  • A complete, readable ISO stored on a local drive. An interrupted download or a corrupted image can fail even when the burner is healthy.
  • Exclusive use of the drive for the current session. Wait for one copy operation to finish before starting another.

Check the drive in File Explorer before inserting media. If it is listed only as a CD/DVD reader or Windows does not identify it as writable, isoburn.exe cannot add recording capability. On a desktop, cabling or a disabled device can be the cause; on a laptop, the built-in drive may simply be read-only.

Systems without an internal writer can use a compatible external USB DVD writer. Connect it directly, allow Windows to install or recognize the device, and confirm that it appears as a writable drive before opening the ISO. A USB writer is an optional hardware solution, not a substitute for checking the image or Windows components.

Use media that matches both the writer and the image size. If a single-layer disc cannot hold the image, a suitable dual-layer disc is required; forcing an oversized image onto unsuitable media will not work. Keep the disc clean, close the tray fully, and avoid starting other software that is trying to use the same optical drive.

How do I burn an ISO with Windows Disc Image Burner?

Use File Explorer

  1. Insert a blank, compatible disc into the writable drive.
  2. In File Explorer, browse to the .iso file.
  3. Right-click the file and select Burn disc image.
  4. Choose the target DVD writer in the dialog. If the option to verify the disc after burning is offered, enable it when the integrity of the result matters.
  5. Start the burn and leave the drive alone until Windows reports completion. Starting another burn during this copy session can trigger a documented Windows error stating, “There was a problem burning this disc. The disc might no longer be usable.”

Verification reads the resulting disc after writing and can reveal media or drive problems that are not obvious from a successful-looking progress bar. It takes additional time, but it is useful for installation media, archival copies, and any disc that must boot reliably on another computer.

Launch it from Command Prompt

Open Command Prompt and pass the full ISO path in quotation marks:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
isoburn.exe "C:pathimage.iso"

Technical references also document a form that opens the burn dialog and specifies the target drive letter:

isoburn.exe /Q F: "C:pathimage.iso"

Replace F: with the letter assigned to your writable optical drive. Quoting the path is essential when folders or the file name contain spaces. If the command is not found from the current prompt, use the full system path:

"%windir%System32isoburn.exe" "C:pathimage.iso"

Launching from the command line bypasses a broken Explorer association, but it does not bypass hardware requirements. The target letter must identify the optical writer, not a USB flash drive or another storage volume.

How do I fix a missing “Burn disc image” command?

The missing context-menu entry usually indicates that the .iso extension is associated with another application. Repair the association rather than downloading a new executable.

  2. Use Choose defaults by file type (or search for .iso).
  3. Select the current app beside .iso and choose Windows Explorer or the Windows Disc Image Burner handler offered by your edition of Windows.
  4. Close Settings, return to the ISO in File Explorer, and check the context menu again.

Associations can change after installing an archive utility, virtual-drive program, or other ISO-handling application. That does not mean isoburn.exe is missing; Explorer is simply sending the file to a different handler. If the menu remains absent, use the Command Prompt method above as a workaround. The executable can still open an ISO even when Explorer’s association is damaged.

What should I do when a burn fails?

1. Check the drive, disc, and image

Confirm that the drive appears in File Explorer and is identified as writable. Try a new blank disc from a compatible type, and make sure the tray is fully closed. If every known-good disc fails, test the same ISO on another writer if one is available; this separates media or drive failure from an image problem.

An ISO can be readable as an ordinary file yet still be incomplete or corrupted in a way that appears only during recording. When the publisher provides a checksum, compare the downloaded image with it before wasting additional discs. If the checksum does not match, obtain the ISO again from the publisher rather than repeatedly retrying the burn.

2. Wait for an earlier session to finish

Windows documents an error when another burn is started while the first copy session is still active. Canceling and immediately selecting Burn disc image again can therefore make the disc unusable. Let the first operation finish, or restart the burn with fresh media after the dialog has closed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the first disc is already marked unusable, do not keep retrying on it. Optical media generally cannot be restored to blank status through this tool. Close the original dialog, eject the disc when Windows permits it, and start a new session with compatible blank media.

3. Repair Windows component files

When the file is in the expected directory but Windows reports missing or damaged components, use Microsoft’s supported repair sequence from an elevated Command Prompt:

  1. Run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. DISM repairs the Windows component store and the running image.
  2. After DISM completes, run sfc /scannow. System File Checker scans protected files and replaces incorrect versions with correct ones when repair content is available.
  3. Restart Windows and test the ISO burn again.

For a focused check of this executable, run:

sfc /scanfile=C:WindowsSystem32isoburn.exe

Use the exact path shown on your system if Windows is installed on another drive. SFC’s documented purpose is to scan and verify protected system files and replace incorrect versions with correct ones. DISM addresses the component store that supplies repair files, so running DISM before SFC is important when the store itself may be damaged.

If SFC or DISM reports that it could not repair files, repeat the checks after resolving any servicing errors and consider Windows recovery options rather than downloading a replacement executable. Save the command output or error code; it is useful evidence when deciding whether the issue is system corruption or a hardware failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Investigate a suspicious copy

If the process runs from a user profile, temporary folder, downloads directory, or another location outside the Windows directory, record its path and signer. Run Defender’s full or Offline scan, inspect startup and scheduled-process activity, and remove only software you can identify as unwanted. A failed signature increases the concern, but it still should be confirmed with a scan and the file’s properties.

  • 25-PACK SPINDLE: Includes 25 branded-surface, write-once DVD-R discs and a Verbatim Limited Lifetime Warranty.

Do not confuse a legitimate system copy with a suspicious process merely because more than one copy exists. Windows can contain a System32 copy and, on 64-bit systems, a SysWOW64 copy. Verify each path and signature, and investigate copies that do not belong to either Windows location.

5. Escalate a hardware failure

When no writer appears, the drive repeatedly rejects known-good media, or Windows reports that there is no disc burner, open Device Manager. Expand the optical-drive category, update the device driver, or uninstall the device and restart Windows so it can be detected again. Persistent failures can result from the drive, media, permissions, cabling, or a corrupted ISO rather than from isoburn.exe itself.

Use a known-good blank disc and, if possible, a second compatible writer. If one drive burns the image successfully while another does not, the comparison points toward the original drive, its connection, or its media compatibility. If multiple drives fail with the same verified ISO, check the image and Windows installation before assuming every burner is defective.

Which fix fits the symptom?

Likely cause First action Evidence to collect Repair scope Hardware needed
ISO file association Restore the .iso default in Settings Missing Burn disc image entry; command-line launch works Explorer association only A writable drive and blank disc for the actual burn
Media or optical drive Try compatible blank media and confirm the drive is writable Drive detection, media compatibility, repeated rejection Device or media troubleshooting Writable optical drive and compatible blank media
Overlapping burn session Wait for the active copy to finish Burn started again before the first session ended; Windows error text Current burn session The same drive, with fresh media if the disc was spoiled
Windows component corruption Run DISM, then SFC Repair-tool output and protected-file errors Component store and protected system files None beyond a functioning Windows installation
Suspicious or altered executable Check path and signature, then scan with Defender Unexpected location, failed or unknown signer, process activity Security investigation None, although a healthy drive is required to burn afterward

This comparison keeps the remedy proportional. A missing menu is an Explorer-association problem, not a reason to replace a system file. A rejected disc is first a media or drive question. DISM and SFC are appropriate when Windows files are damaged, while Defender is the priority when the path or signer is suspicious. The evidence you collect—location, signature result, drive detection, error text, and repair output—helps prevent applying a high-risk fix to the wrong cause.

Can I safely remove or replace isoburn.exe?

No. It is a Windows component, so deleting it can remove the built-in ISO-burning function and create additional system-file problems. If verification shows a damaged copy, repair Windows with DISM and SFC; if it shows an untrusted copy outside the Windows directory, investigate and scan instead of replacing it with a file downloaded from the web.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for common Windows issues such as broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL problems, settings that increase CPU, RAM or disk load, and crash-related problems. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, with a category-based free trial of at least two days before a paid subscription.

When should you stop troubleshooting?

Stop repeating burns when the same verified ISO fails on fresh compatible media and another known-good writer. At that point, preserve the error message and determine whether the failure follows the ISO, the media type, or one particular drive. Likewise, stop downloading replacement executables when DISM or SFC reports a system problem; continue with Windows recovery or professional support instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A security escalation is appropriate when a copy runs from an unexpected location, has no valid Microsoft signature, launches without an ISO or burn request, or continues after the legitimate burner is closed. Disconnecting from networks while a scan runs can limit risk, but do not delete files solely because their names resemble isoburn.exe. Confirm the path, signer, and Defender result first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can isoburn.exe write an ISO to a USB flash drive?

No. Windows Disc Image Burner targets recordable optical media through a writable CD/DVD drive. Creating bootable USB media requires a separate USB-imaging method; passing a USB drive letter to the optical-disc burner does not turn it into a USB writer.

Should I end isoburn.exe in Task Manager during a burn?

Avoid forcibly ending it while the drive is writing or finalizing the disc. Interrupting that stage can leave the disc incomplete or unusable; wait for the burn dialog to respond, then retry with fresh media if Windows reports failure.

Why does a valid-looking ISO still fail to burn?

An ISO can be readable as a file yet still be incomplete or corrupted, and a marginal disc or aging writer can fail only during sustained recording. Compare the image with the publisher’s checksum when one is provided, then test fresh compatible media or another writer to isolate the cause.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Does a digital signature guarantee that every isoburn.exe copy is safe?

A valid signature supports the file’s origin and shows that it was not altered after signing, but it does not explain why a signed process is running from an unexpected location. Always evaluate the complete path, process behavior, and Defender scan results together.

Why is Burn disc image missing after I installed another ISO program?

Another application may have become the default handler for the .iso extension. In Settings, open Apps and Default apps, choose defaults by file type, and assign .iso to Windows Explorer or the Windows Disc Image Burner handler. You can also launch the executable directly while fixing the association.

What does the message “There was a problem burning this disc. The disc might no longer be usable” mean?

Windows uses this message when a burn fails, including when another burn is started before the first copy session finishes. Let the active operation close, eject the affected disc when possible, and retry with fresh compatible media after checking the drive and ISO.

Can I burn an ISO without administrator rights?

The normal Explorer workflow and the basic command generally use the logged-in Windows session; elevation is not a substitute for a writable drive or blank media. Use an elevated Command Prompt specifically for repair commands such as DISM and SFC, not as a way to bypass hardware limitations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the SysWOW64 copy automatically malware?

No. Some 64-bit Windows installations are reported to contain a SysWOW64 copy. Verify the actual path and Microsoft signature on your computer. A copy in a user profile, temporary directory, or downloads folder is more concerning and should be scanned.

What should I do if SFC cannot repair isoburn.exe?

Run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth first, then run sfc /scannow again and restart Windows. If repair still fails, keep the error output and use Windows recovery or professional support instead of downloading a replacement executable.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: isoburn.exe is normally the Microsoft-signed Windows Disc Image Burner in %windir%System32. Verify the path and signature, use compatible blank media in a writable drive, avoid overlapping burn sessions, restore the .iso association when the menu is missing, and run DISM followed by SFC for genuine Windows-file corruption. Unexpected paths, failed signatures, or unexplained launches call for Microsoft Defender scanning rather than a web-downloaded replacement.
