issuser.exe is the remote-control client used by LANDesk Instant Support Suite, now associated with Ivanti. It is not a core Windows file. A copy inside a LANDesk or Ivanti client folder on a computer managed by your employer or school can be legitimate; an unexpected copy, a copy in an unrelated folder, or a security alert deserves investigation. These paths are clues, not proof. Administrators can deploy software to another directory, and a malicious program can copy a legitimate filename into a convincing folder. The installed parent application, the device’s management status, and a security scan matter more than the filename alone.
Is issuser.exe safe or a virus?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer. On a company- or school-managed computer where LANDesk, Ivanti Endpoint Manager, or another Ivanti support component was intentionally installed, issuser.exe may be an expected process. How do I check whether LANDesk or Ivanti is installed?
- Open Settings and select Apps then Installed apps (called Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds).
- Search for Ivanti, LANDesk, Instant Support Suite, or Endpoint Manager.
- On a managed device, check with the organization that owns the computer. The software may be required for help-desk access, inventory, policy enforcement, or remote maintenance.
If you cannot identify an authorized parent program, do not assume that deleting the executable will solve the problem. First record its complete path and the time it appeared, then scan the system.
How do I inspect the file location?
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- On the Processes or Details tab, locate
issuser.exe. - Right-click it and choose Open file location.
- Compare the directory with the known LANDesk/Ivanti locations and with the parent software listed in Windows. An unrelated directory is a warning sign, not a final malware determination.
Do not rely on the name alone, and do not download a second copy to compare it. There is no single current file hash that can serve as a universal authenticity test for every deployment.
What should I do if security software flags issuser.exe?
Keep the detection in quarantine while you investigate, rather than adding an exception simply to make the process run. In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, and run a Full scan. Why is issuser.exe running?
The normal reason is that the LANDesk/Ivanti client is running a remote-support or management service. It may start with Windows so an administrator can reach the computer when assistance is requested. The process can also appear temporarily when a support session is established or when the client checks in with its management system.
If you never installed remote-management software, the process is running from an unexpected directory, or it keeps returning after you remove it, treat that behavior as a source-identification problem rather than a routine Windows task. Check the parent application, startup entries, scheduled tasks, and security history while avoiding changes that could disrupt a managed computer.
How do I fix an issuser.exe error?
An error such as “issuser.exe has stopped working,” a failed remote-control session, or a process that will not start usually points to the LANDesk/Ivanti installation, its service, or its connection to the management system. Work through the following sequence and stop when the symptom is resolved.
1. Capture the exact symptom and path
Write down the complete error text, when it appears, whether it occurs at sign-in or only during a support session, and the executable’s location from Task Manager. Note whether other Ivanti components, such as issproxy.exe, are running. These details help an administrator distinguish a damaged client from a server, authentication, or network problem.

2. Update or repair the parent LANDesk/Ivanti installation
ProcessLibrary’s troubleshooting guidance attributes most issuser.exe errors to the application executing the process and recommends updating the LANDesk Instant Support Suite or uninstalling it when it is no longer needed. Use the organization’s approved software portal or the vendor’s supported installer; do not obtain an executable from a random “DLL/EXE fix” site.
If the product appears in Installed apps, select its menu and use Modify, Repair, or Uninstall when those options are provided. 3. Read the Ivanti remote-control log
Ivanti documents issuser.log and registry-controlled text logging for the remote-control component. An administrator can enable the documented logging level, reproduce the failure, and inspect the timestamped entries. A client-side startup or service error points toward repairing the installation; messages about authentication, a server, or transport indicate that the Windows executable may be working and the problem lies elsewhere.
Save a copy of the relevant entries before clearing logs or reinstalling. Avoid posting logs publicly because they can contain computer names, user names, addresses, or session information.
4. Repair Windows component corruption only when Windows itself shows signs of it
Use DISM and SFC when Windows Update, servicing, or other system components are also reporting corruption. These commands repair Windows component-store and protected system-file problems; they do not replace a missing or damaged LANDesk/Ivanti client.
- Save your work, then open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run DISM and wait for it to finish:

If SFC reports files it could not repair, preserve the result and contact support rather than repeatedly running the commands. A clean SFC result does not prove that the remote-control client itself is healthy.
5. Check Windows security protections
Microsoft’s Windows Security troubleshooter checks protections including SmartScreen, User Account Control, Data Execution Prevention, Windows Firewall, and antivirus status. Run it when security settings may be blocking the client or when a recent policy change coincided with the error. If you are troubleshooting a different computer, Microsoft documents saving the troubleshooter to a USB flash drive or CD and running it there.
Do not turn off Defender, the firewall, SmartScreen, or other protections merely to force an unknown executable to launch. If a managed security policy is blocking a legitimate client, the administrator should create any required exception through the organization’s normal change process.

How do I remove issuser.exe safely?
Remove the parent LANDesk/Ivanti software, not just the individual executable. Deleting a live client file can leave services, scheduled tasks, registry settings, and repair mechanisms behind, and a management system may restore it at the next check-in.
On an employer- or school-managed computer
- Contact the help desk or administrator and provide the file path, error message, and any Defender detection name.
- Ask whether remote control or Endpoint Manager is required for the device.
- Allow the administrator to disable, update, or uninstall the client through the managed deployment system.
On an unmanaged personal computer
- Confirm that no legitimate support agreement or previously installed Ivanti product depends on the client.
