itunes64setup 5.exe is not a separate iTunes release documented by Apple. Apple documents iTunes64Setup.exe as its 64-bit Windows installer, so the added space and 5 most likely identify a renamed or duplicate download. The name alone cannot prove that the file is genuine or safe. Treat it as untrusted until you verify its source, Apple Inc. digital signature, and a current security scan. If installation fails, use the official Microsoft and Apple recovery sequence first: sign in as an administrator, update Windows, install the supported Microsoft Store build, address security-software interference, restart, and retry. A clean removal of iTunes components is the deeper fix for repeated MSI, DLL, or Apple Application Support errors.
What is itunes64setup 5.exe?
itunes64setup 5.exe appears to be a copy of the Windows 64-bit iTunes installer that has been renamed by a browser, download manager, user, or file-transfer process. Apple’s documented filename is iTunes64Setup.exe; Apple does not publish a distinct product or release called itunes64setup 5.exe. The number may have been added when a second file with the same name was saved, but that is an inference, not proof of where this particular file came from.

iTunes64Setup.exe |
Apple’s documented 64-bit Windows installer name. |
itunes64setup 5.exe |
A similarly named file with an added suffix; Apple does not document it as a separate release. |
| Apple Inc. digital signature | Shows that the signed file was issued by Apple and has not been altered since signing, provided Windows reports the signature as valid. |
| One herdProtect record | A specific Apple-signed sample was reported as 0/68 detections in 2025. That result applies only to that hash and analysis date. |
The filename does not reveal the iTunes build, download source, or whether the executable has been modified. Those details require the file’s Properties metadata, signature, hash, or installer information.
Is itunes64setup 5.exe safe to run?
It may be legitimate, but you should not run it solely because the name resembles Apple’s installer. A file from an Apple download page or the Microsoft Store is a safer starting point than one delivered by a popup, email attachment, peer-to-peer network, or an unknown mirror. Even a familiar name can be applied to a different executable.

Check where the file came from
- Do not open the executable if you do not recognize the download source. Move it out of the way while you investigate.
- Prefer downloading iTunes again from Apple’s official iTunes page or installing the supported build through the Microsoft Store. Apple provides separate 64-bit and 32-bit Windows downloads.
- If the file was supplied by someone else, ask for the official download location rather than accepting a renamed copy.
Verify the Apple signature
- Right-click the file and choose Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures. Select the signature and choose Details.
- Windows should report that the signature is valid and identify Apple Inc. as the signer. A missing, invalid, or differently named signer is a reason not to run the file.
- Review the certificate details and signing time, but do not treat an old certificate date as proof that the file is malicious or genuine. The signature must be checked on your exact copy.
Scan the exact file
Use Windows Security or another current, trusted antivirus product to scan the executable. Microsoft’s installation guidance directs users to Windows Security when dealing with a suspicious application or possible malware. A clean result is specific to the file that was scanned and the engine definitions available at that time; it does not certify every file with a similar name.
For an additional identity check, open PowerShell and run Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 "C:Pathitunes64setup 5.exe", replacing the path with the actual location. Record the resulting hash if you need to compare the file with a publisher-provided value. No hash for this renamed filename is published in the available Apple documentation, so a matching Apple signature and an official source are more useful than the name alone.
What to do if a check fails
If the source is unexpected, the signature is absent or invalid, or your security software flags the file, quarantine or delete it. Download iTunes again from Apple or the Microsoft Store rather than trying to repair a questionable executable. Do not bypass a warning by adding an exception unless you have independently confirmed the file’s provenance and your security vendor explains the detection.
Can you delete itunes64setup 5.exe?
Usually, yes: an installer executable in your Downloads folder is not the installed iTunes application. Deleting the installer does not remove iTunes, Apple Mobile Device Support, or your iPhone and iPad backups. Before deleting it, make sure no installation is still running and that you will not need the same installer for an offline repair.
- If iTunes is already installed and working, you can normally delete the setup file after closing iTunes and any Apple device-management applications.
- If installation stopped halfway, keep the file only long enough to verify it; a fresh download from an official source is preferable to reusing an untrusted copy.
- If Windows says the file is in use, restart the computer and try again rather than forcing a deletion while an installer process is active.
- Deleting the setup file will not repair missing DLLs or remove a broken installation. Use the repair or clean-reinstall procedures below for those problems.
Why does itunes64setup 5.exe fail to install?
Installation failures generally come from an unsuitable Windows architecture, pending updates, an administrator or permissions problem, security software blocking the installer, damaged installer data, or conflicting remnants of an earlier iTunes installation. The visible message can point to the layer that failed: Apple specifically references “error 2” and “Apple Application Support was not found” in its iTunes guidance, while DLL entry-point and missing-MSI errors often indicate damaged components.
Architecture mismatch
Apple states that 64-bit editions of Windows require the 64-bit iTunes installer. A 32-bit Windows installation needs the 32-bit package instead. The filename does not prove which operating system you have; check Settings > System > About and read System type before downloading.

Outdated Windows or a pending restart
Windows updates can replace servicing components that installers depend on. A restart may also be required after an update, driver installation, or previous iTunes attempt. Repeatedly launching the setup program without completing that restart can produce the same error each time.
Security software or policy interference
Antivirus, endpoint protection, controlled-folder policies, and workplace restrictions can block an installer from writing services, DLLs, or registry entries. Do not permanently disable protection. If your security vendor documents a temporary installation exception, follow that procedure, restore protection immediately afterward, and scan the newly installed files.
Partial or conflicting Apple components
An interrupted installation can leave Apple Software Update, Apple Mobile Device Support, Bonjour, or Apple Application Support in an inconsistent state. A later installer may then fail while trying to upgrade or remove a component whose MSI file is missing.
How do you fix itunes64setup 5.exe installation errors?
Work through these steps in order. Stop when the installation succeeds; a clean reinstall is only necessary if the simpler recovery actions fail.
Recommended Free Tools
1. Confirm the source and Windows architecture
- Delete or quarantine an untrusted copy after recording any error message you need for troubleshooting.
- Check Settings > System > About for 32-bit or 64-bit Windows.
- Use Apple’s official iTunes download page or the Microsoft Store. Choose the package that matches your system; Apple’s 64-bit installer is required on 64-bit editions of Windows.
2. Sign in with administrator rights
Use an account that can install applications. If your organization manages the PC, an administrator may need to approve the installation or adjust an application-control policy. Right-clicking an installer and choosing Run as administrator can resolve a permissions failure, but it cannot make an unsigned or untrusted file safe.
3. Install Windows updates and restart
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Install all available updates, including any servicing or cumulative update offered for your edition.
- Choose Restart, even if Windows does not show a prominent restart prompt.
- After Windows loads, close other installers and retry iTunes from the official source.
4. Use the Microsoft Store build when possible
The Microsoft Store distribution handles updates through the Store. Apple notes that, after downloading iTunes, you can check for updates to iTunes in the Microsoft Store. Open the Store, search for iTunes, choose the Apple-published listing, and select Install or Update. If the Store itself is stuck, sign in to the Store, install pending Store updates, restart Windows, and try again.

5. Address a security-software block safely
Review your antivirus or endpoint-protection history for a blocked iTunes installer. If the product identifies a specific conflict, use its documented temporary procedure or ask the administrator who manages it. Download a fresh installer first, pause protection only for the minimum time the vendor permits, complete the installation, re-enable protection, and run a full scan. If the warning remains unexplained, do not proceed with that file.
6. Repair or reset the installed app
Windows can repair some Store applications without removing personal data. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select iTunes, choose Advanced options, and use Repair. If Repair does not help, Reset reinstalls the app data used by Windows; it can sign you out and remove app settings, so close iTunes and make sure your media library and device backups are available before using it. Traditional desktop installations may not offer these buttons.
7. Run Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter
Use Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter when Windows will not install, update, or remove iTunes because of a damaged MSI registration. Choose the action that matches the failure, allow it to remove the blocked product entry, restart if requested, and then install iTunes again from an official source. This tool addresses installer registration; it does not validate the safety of a downloaded executable.
How do you perform a clean iTunes reinstall?
Use a clean reinstall when Repair, Reset, updates, and the installer troubleshooter do not resolve repeated failures, missing MSI files, DLL entry-point errors, or “Apple Application Support was not found.” Make a note of your library location and confirm that device backups are stored safely before removing components.
Prepare the computer
- Disconnect iPhone, iPad, and iPod devices.
- Close iTunes, Apple Music, backup utilities, and any application that may use Apple Mobile Device Support.
- Sign in with an administrator account and save any unsaved work.
Uninstall the Apple components
Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Control Panel > Programs and Features on older Windows editions). Remove iTunes and, when present, these related entries: Apple Software Update, Apple Mobile Device Support, Bonjour, Apple Application Support (32-bit), and Apple Application Support (64-bit). If Windows refuses to remove an item because its MSI file is missing, cancel the normal uninstall and use Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter instead.
Restart and remove leftovers
- Restart Windows after uninstalling the components.
- After signing in, check for leftover Apple folders in
C:Program Files,C:Program Files (x86), andC:ProgramData. Delete only folders clearly belonging to the removed iTunes components; do not remove a shared folder used by another Apple application without confirming its contents. - Check your user profile’s music and backup folders separately. Those may contain your library or device backups and should not be deleted as part of an application cleanup.
Install a fresh official copy
Download the correct 32-bit or 64-bit package from Apple or install the Apple-published Microsoft Store version. Verify the new file’s signature, run the installer as an administrator if required, and restart Windows when setup finishes. Reconnect an iOS device only after iTunes opens normally.

How do you fix specific Apple Application Support and DLL errors?
“Apple Application Support was not found” or error 2
These messages indicate that iTunes cannot locate a required Apple support component. First restart Windows and install the latest supported iTunes build. If the message persists, remove and reinstall Apple Application Support together with iTunes and the other related components using the clean-reinstall sequence; installing a random DLL from the web is not a safe substitute.
DLL entry-point or missing-DLL errors
An entry-point error usually means that a DLL and the program expecting it are from different versions, or that a file is damaged. Do not download replacement DLLs from unofficial sites. Uninstall the related Apple components, reboot, and reinstall the complete package so all files come from the same official build.
Installer rolls back or reports a missing MSI
A rollback can occur when Windows Installer cannot find the cached MSI used to update or remove an older component. Use Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter to clear the orphaned installation record, restart, and install the current package. If a managed PC still blocks the operation, the administrator may need to repair Windows Installer policy.

What is known about the version behind this filename?
The exact build represented by itunes64setup 5.exe cannot be identified from the name. Apple’s reviewed download page lists 64-bit and 32-bit Windows downloads and specifies Windows 10 in its requirements, but it does not publish this renamed filename or expose a build number for it. Use the executable’s Properties metadata, installer screen, or SHA-256 hash to identify a particular copy. A suffix such as 5 is not a version number.

Frequently asked questions
Does deleting the installer remove my iTunes library?
No. The setup executable and the installed application use different files. Your library and device backups remain where iTunes stored them unless you deliberately remove those folders.
How can I tell whether two copies are the same file?
Compare their SHA-256 hashes with PowerShell’s Get-FileHash command. Identical hashes mean the files are byte-for-byte identical; different hashes mean that at least one copy differs, even if both have the same visible filename.

Is the Microsoft Store version different from Apple’s desktop installer?
Both are official distribution routes, but the Store version receives application updates through Microsoft Store mechanisms. A desktop installation can leave traditional Apple components such as Bonjour and Apple Application Support, so its repair and uninstall steps may look different.

Can 32-bit Windows use the 64-bit installer?
No. Apple’s requirement is the reverse: 64-bit editions of Windows require the 64-bit installer, while 32-bit Windows needs the 32-bit package. Check System type before downloading rather than relying on the filename.
