James has no confirmed last name in the cited Fallout 3 references. He is the Lone Wanderer’s father, known in the game as “Dad,” and the established name is simply James.
Who is James in Fallout 3?
James is the Lone Wanderer’s father. Bethesda’s Fallout 3 Game of the Year Edition PC manual refers to him as “your father” and later calls him “Dad.” The opening story follows James as he leaves Vault 101, giving the player the choice to pursue him or move on.

A character reference lists his name as James and his display name as Dad, citing the official game guide’s entry “Dad (James).” That supports James and Dad as the names used for the character; it does not provide a surname.
Is James’ last name ever given?
The cited official manual and game-guide reference do not establish a last name for James. The accurate answer is that his surname is not confirmed in those sources. If you encounter a proposed surname elsewhere, treat it as fan speculation unless it can be backed by an official Fallout source.

Why do some players ask about his surname?
The game makes James central to the opening: he leaves Vault 101, and the Lone Wanderer can set out to find him. Bethesda’s manual even jokes, “When you finally catch up with Dad, be nice. Or not…” That emphasis on his familiar label and role does not add a family name.
