leagueoflegends.exe is the Windows game executable for League of Legends. Riot’s documented default location is C:Riot GamesLeague of LegendsGameLeague of Legends.exe, although the path changes if you chose another installation folder. The name alone does not prove that a file is genuine or malicious: its location, installation source and security-scan results matter.

These are default paths, not requirements. If you selected another drive or folder, the same files can appear under that custom location. The meaningful question is whether the file is inside the Riot installation directory you intentionally chose and whether League came from Riot’s client or setup files.
Is leagueoflegends.exe safe?
A copy inside your legitimate League installation is consistent with Riot’s documented layout. A file with the same name in a temporary folder, a downloads directory, an unrelated system folder or a location created by an untrusted installer is unverified and should be treated cautiously. A filename can be copied by another program, so it is not evidence of authenticity by itself.
Check the location before allowing anything
- Open Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc, or open the file location from the security alert that identified the process.

CPU usage by itself does not establish that the file is malicious. First check whether the process is in the expected Riot folder and whether the client is downloading, patching or repeatedly restarting. An unexpected path, persistent activity when League is closed, or a security detection should be handled as a trust problem before performance tuning.

What should I check before fixing a launch error?
Do the trust and evidence checks before changing security settings or deleting files. They prevent you from granting access to a look-alike executable and give you information to include in a support ticket if the problem remains.
- Record the exact message. Note whether the failure occurs before the client opens, during patching, after champion select or with a VAN code.
- Record the location. In Task Manager or the alert, open the file location and copy the complete path.
- Check the installation source. A Riot-installed copy in your chosen League folder is materially different from a file delivered by an unknown download.
- Scan before making exclusions. Update Defender, run a full scan and use Defender Offline if unwanted software persists.
- Close duplicate launchers. In Task Manager, end only clearly identified Riot or League processes that are stuck, then start the client normally. Do not terminate unrelated Windows processes simply because they use CPU.
How do I fix a blocked launch without reinstalling?
Work from reversible checks to more invasive changes. Riot places security and compatibility checks before repair, cache deletion and reinstallation.
1. Add narrowly scoped security exceptions
For a trusted installation, add exceptions for the files Riot lists, using your actual installation paths:

In the documented default layout these correspond to the paths shown earlier. Your security product may call the control an exclusion, allow-list entry or firewall rule. Add only the required executable, not an entire drive or a broad temporary-folder rule. If the file’s path or origin is untrusted, leave the alert in place and scan instead of adding an exception.
2. Turn off compatibility mode for the game
Right-click the actual game executable, choose Properties, open the Compatibility tab and clear Run this program in compatibility mode for. Apply the change and start League from Riot Client. If compatibility settings were applied to a shortcut rather than the executable, check both locations.
3. Perform a clean boot
A clean boot tests whether another startup service is competing with the client. Press Win+R, enter msconfig, open the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, and disable the remaining non-Microsoft services. On the Startup tab, open Task Manager and disable nonessential startup items. Restart and test League. After testing, return to msconfig and re-enable services and startup items systematically so you can identify a conflict rather than leaving Windows in a reduced-startup state.
4. Update the graphics driver
Riot recommends current graphics drivers for launch failures and loading-screen problems. Install the driver supplied for your graphics hardware by its manufacturer, restart Windows, and test again. If the issue began immediately after a driver change, note that timing for support; do not install random driver packages from download sites.

How do I use Riot Client Repair?
Repair is Riot’s supported next step after checking security and compatibility conflicts. It is less destructive than deleting local data or reinstalling the game.
- Open Riot Client and sign in.
- Open the profile menu and select Settings.
- Choose League of Legends.
- Select Repair and let the process finish without closing the client.
- Restart Riot Client and test the game, including the point at which it previously failed.
Repair can replace or restore damaged game elements while preserving the installation structure. If it reports that it cannot complete, save the message and proceed to cache cleanup rather than repeatedly starting the same repair.
How do I clear the League and Riot cache?
Clear the local cache only after Riot Client Repair has failed. Riot’s current launch guidance points to C:Users<you>AppDataLocal; the exact folder names can vary with the installation.
- Exit Riot Client and League completely. Confirm in Task Manager that the related processes have closed.
- Press Win+R, enter
%localappdata%, and press Enter. - Locate the League game folder and the Riot Games game folder identified by Riot’s guidance. Do not delete unrelated folders.
- Remove those local folders or move them to a temporary backup location if you want an easy rollback.
- Restart Windows, open Riot Client and allow it to recreate the local data.
Cache deletion removes local temporary data; it does not validate an executable that came from an untrusted source. If the path check failed, scan and reinstall from Riot’s current setup files instead of using cache deletion as a security remedy.

Riot says VAN 9002 usually indicates that Windows Exploit Protection is disabled or has custom settings that conflict with Vanguard. Restore the relevant mitigations to Windows defaults, remove custom Riot-specific entries, and restart.
- Open Windows Security and go to App & browser control.
- Open Exploit protection.
- In System settings, set each of these to Use default: Control Flow Guard, Data Execution Prevention, Mandatory ASLR, Bottom-up ASLR, High Entropy ASLR, Structured Exception Handling Overwrite Protection (SEHOP), and heap-integrity settings.
- Open Program settings and remove custom entries created specifically for Riot or League if they override the system defaults.
- Restart Windows before launching Riot Client again.
Exploit Protection changes affect Windows security behavior, so do not substitute a blanket disablement for the documented defaults. If another application requires a custom mitigation, record that change and restore it after testing League.
When should I reinstall League of Legends?
Reinstall only after security checks, compatibility changes, a clean boot, driver updates, Riot Client Repair and cache cleanup have failed, or when the installation is clearly incomplete. Riot says new setup files are uploaded after patches, so an old installer can reproduce the problem.

- Check the installation directory for leftover old setup files. Remove only League-related leftovers after confirming you are not deleting personal files or another Riot installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Download and run Riot’s current League setup files, rather than an archived installer or third-party package.
- Install to the default
C:Riot GamesLeague of Legendsdirectory or record the custom directory you choose. - Launch Riot Client, allow patching to complete, and test before adding optional security exceptions.
Reinstalling replaces the game files but does not make an untrusted installer safe. Keep the source and resulting path documented so a future Defender alert can be evaluated correctly.
What should I do if League still closes after champion select?
That timing narrows the investigation to the transition from the client to the game process. Confirm that the game executable is in the trusted Riot folder, disable compatibility mode, check security exceptions, update the graphics driver, clean-boot Windows and run Riot Client Repair in that order. If the game reaches champion select but closes before loading, test again after each change so you know which condition mattered.
A persistent post-champion-select failure can also be caused by damaged local data; clear the specified AppData folders after Repair fails. VAN 9002 or a related security message requires the Exploit Protection procedure rather than repeated cache deletion.

Riot’s patcher guidance says Windows users can package the LogsLeagueClient Logs folder from the installation directory and attach it to a support ticket. - Include the exact error text or VAN code.
- Include the complete path shown for

- Attach the requested logs rather than screenshots alone when Riot asks for diagnostic files.
