LiveLocker.exe is listed in several third-party inventories as an executable installed with MSI Live Update 6. That association does not prove that every file with this name is genuine. Safety depends on the file’s location, digital signature, origin, hash, startup command and Microsoft Defender results. A copy under an expected MSI Live Update folder with a valid MSI publisher signature and a clean scan is consistent with the legitimate utility; a copy in %AppData%, %Temp% or a random user folder should be treated as untrusted until checked. This guide shows how to verify the file, respond to a detection, repair a damaged MSI utility installation and remove it safely when you do not need it.
What is LiveLocker.exe?
LiveLocker.exe is a filename associated with MSI Live Update 6 in third-party software inventories. One inventory places it in the MSI Live Update installation tree at FlashUtyMSISetupLiveLocker.exe; another lists the same executable in an MSI Live Update 6 package. MSI Live Update was used to check or deliver updates for MSI software and hardware, so the executable may appear when that utility is installed.

Those inventories identify how the name is used in a package; they are not a Microsoft or MSI digital-signature validation. A filename can be copied or changed by unrelated software. Treat the inventory match as a clue, not as proof of authenticity.
Why does LiveLocker.exe appear at startup?
A startup record named MSILU_Host has been documented alongside LiveLocker.exe. MSI Live Update may register a background launcher so it can check for updates when Windows starts. The entry itself does not establish that the executable is safe: the command must point to the same file you verify on disk.

If you no longer use MSI Live Update, removing its parent application is safer than deleting only the startup value. Deleting an executable while leaving a startup command can create recurring “file not found” messages and does not explain how the file arrived on the system.
Is LiveLocker.exe safe or a virus?
There is no filename-only answer. A file in the expected MSI Live Update directory, signed by MSI with a valid signature and reported clean by Microsoft Defender, is consistent with a legitimate installation. An unexpected location, missing or invalid signature, unexplained network activity, or a Defender detection changes the risk assessment and warrants quarantine and investigation.
Windows warnings about unknown software are an early warning, not a declaration that a file is malware. Do not open or execute an unknown copy merely to see what it does. Verify where it came from and scan it first.
How can I verify LiveLocker.exe without running it?
Use the following workflow on the computer showing the file. These checks are more reliable together than any single result.
- Open the file location. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. On the Processes or Details tab, find LiveLocker.exe, right-click it and choose Open file location. If it is not currently running, use the Startup apps tab or search File Explorer for the exact filename.
- Record the complete path. Compare it with the MSI Live Update tree reported in package inventories, including the
FlashUtyMSISetupLiveLocker.exeportion. A path under%AppData%,%Temp%, a downloads folder or an unrelated random directory is not an expected match and should be investigated. - Check the publisher signature. In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, then open Digital Signatures. Select the signature, choose Details and confirm that Windows reports it as valid and that the publisher is MSI. A missing signature, an invalid signature or an unexpected publisher is a red flag, not a minor warning.
- Scan the file. Right-click it and choose Scan with Microsoft Defender if that option is available. You can also open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Custom scan and select the containing folder. Do not disable protection to test the executable.
- Check the startup command. In Task Manager, open Startup apps, or inspect the entry with Microsoft Sysinternals Autoruns. Confirm that the command points to the same path you just checked. A startup name that points to a second copy elsewhere is suspicious.
- Compare a hash when the origin is disputed. Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt and run
certutil -hashfile "C:fullpathLiveLocker.exe" SHA256, replacing the path with the one you recorded. A hash is useful when you have a trusted MSI package or known-good copy for comparison; by itself, it does not prove that a file is safe.
What do the location, signature and scan results mean?
| Evidence | More consistent with a legitimate MSI utility | Reason for caution | Recommended response |
|---|---|---|---|
| Installation path | Inside the MSI Live Update installation tree, including the documented FlashUtyMSISetup location |
%AppData%, %Temp%, Downloads or an unrelated user folder |
Do not run the unexpected copy; scan it and investigate its origin |
| Digital signature | Windows reports a valid signature from MSI | Signature missing, invalid or issued to an unexpected publisher | Quarantine or hold the file for further analysis |
| Defender result | No detection after an up-to-date scan | Defender identifies malware or potentially unwanted software | Choose Quarantine or Remove unless you have independently verified the file |
| Startup command | MSILU_Host points to the same verified file |
It launches a copy from a temporary or random directory | Disable the entry while investigating and remove the parent program if unwanted |
| File identity | Hash and version match a trusted MSI-provided copy | No trusted source for comparison, or the file differs unexpectedly | Obtain installation media only from a trusted MSI source; do not exchange unknown copies |
No single green result overrides the others. For example, a valid-looking filename in the right folder is not enough if the signature is invalid, and a valid signature does not explain a duplicate copy in a temporary directory.
What should I do if Microsoft Defender detects LiveLocker.exe?
Treat the detection as a security event until the file’s origin and publisher are verified. Microsoft’s documented response is to quarantine or remove the item, run a full scan and use an offline scan if unwanted software persists.

- Return to Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, select Full scan and start the scan after updating security intelligence.
- If detections return after a full scan, select Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save open work first; Windows restarts and scans before the normal desktop loads.
- After the scan, check Settings > Apps > Installed apps for MSI Live Update or another unfamiliar parent program. Uninstall software you do not need, then restart and review startup entries again.
Do not restore a quarantined file merely because its name resembles an MSI component. Restore it only when the exact path, valid publisher signature, trusted origin and scan results all support that decision.
How do I fix a normal LiveLocker.exe error?
There is no authoritative LiveLocker.exe-specific error-code catalog, so the exact message, path, signer and parent application determine the repair. Capture those details before changing files; a “file not found” message after an uninstall needs a different remedy from an application crash or a security detection.
“LiveLocker.exe is missing” or “not found”
First check whether MSI Live Update is still listed under Settings > Apps > Installed apps. If it is present, use its available Modify or Repair option, or uninstall and reinstall the utility from a trusted MSI source. If it is no longer needed, uninstall the remaining MSI utility and remove its orphaned startup entry instead of downloading a replacement executable from a file-sharing site.
“Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file”
Recheck the path and signature, then scan the file. The message can occur when Defender has quarantined the file, when permissions are wrong, or when the startup command points to a deleted copy. Do not weaken Windows security controls to force an unverified executable to run.
LiveLocker.exe crashes, freezes or uses unusual CPU
Record when the problem occurs and whether it starts with Windows. Install pending Windows updates and current security intelligence, then restart. If the issue began after an MSI Live Update change, uninstall that utility and test the system without its startup component; reinstall only if you need it and can obtain a trusted package. A crash log or Windows Event Viewer entry can help identify whether the fault belongs to the utility or to another MSI component.
A startup pop-up appears after you removed MSI software
Open Task Manager > Startup apps and disable the stale entry. Then inspect Autoruns for a remaining MSILU_Host command and remove it only after confirming that it points to an uninstalled program. Restart Windows and verify that the message is gone; do not delete unrelated registry entries.

Defender flags the file but the signature appears valid
Keep the file quarantined while you verify the exact path, hash and package source. A valid signature supports publisher identity, but it does not guarantee that the particular file was obtained through a trustworthy channel or that it is free of unwanted behavior. Submit the question to MSI support or your organization’s security team if the file is business-critical.
How do I uninstall MSI Live Update safely?
Uninstall the parent application through Windows rather than deleting LiveLocker.exe first. This removes its registered components and gives you a cleaner startup configuration.

- Follow the uninstaller, restart Windows, then check Task Manager > Startup apps for a remaining
MSILU_Hostentry. - If the entry remains, use Autoruns to identify its exact command and disable or remove only the orphaned MSI Live Update entry.
- Run a full Defender scan after cleanup, especially if the original file was in an unexpected directory.
Removing MSI Live Update can stop its automatic update checks. It does not remove Windows Update, and it should not affect unrelated MSI software unless that software specifically depends on the utility.
How can I reinstall it if I still need MSI Live Update?
Only reinstall when the utility is required for a particular MSI product and the previous checks did not indicate compromise. Download the installer from a trusted MSI source, verify the downloaded file before opening it, install with Windows Security enabled, and then verify the new LiveLocker.exe path and signature. If the installer produces a different path, publisher or startup command than expected, stop and investigate rather than approving it automatically.
After installation, run Windows Update, update Defender security intelligence, and perform a scan. Keep a note of the installation path, signer and file hash so that a future duplicate or startup alert can be compared with a known-good installation.
Could livelocked.exe or locker.exe be the same file?
No. Similar spelling does not establish identity. Trend Micro’s livelocked.exe entry is a different ransomware filename, and BleepingComputer’s locker.exe entry is also a different file. Check the exact spelling, path and hash before applying advice about another executable to LiveLocker.exe.

When should I get specialist help?
Escalate when the file recreates itself after quarantine, multiple unrelated copies appear, Defender reports repeated detections, or the computer shows unexplained account, network or startup changes. Preserve the detection name, full path, signature details, hash, startup command and scan results. Do not email or upload a suspicious executable unless your organization’s security process specifically authorizes it.
If the only symptom is a stale startup message after uninstalling MSI software, the Windows uninstall and startup cleanup steps above are usually the least risky path. If the error includes a different filename, investigate that filename separately rather than assuming LiveLocker.exe is responsible.

Can I delete LiveLocker.exe directly?
Deleting the executable first can leave MSI Live Update partially installed and create startup errors. Uninstall the parent program through Windows Settings, then remove only an orphaned startup entry after confirming its command.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will disabling the startup entry damage Windows?
Disabling an MSI Live Update startup entry does not disable Windows Update. It may stop that MSI utility from checking for updates automatically, so you can still launch the utility manually if it remains installed.
Why does a signed file still trigger a warning?
A signature identifies the signer and can be invalidated by a damaged file, but it does not describe every behavior or prove that the download source was trustworthy. Review the complete path, hash, origin and Defender result together before deciding whether to allow it.
Where can I find the information a technician needs?
Protection History contains the detection name and affected path; File Properties shows signature details; Task Manager or Autoruns shows the startup command; and certutil can calculate a SHA-256 hash. Providing all four avoids confusing LiveLocker.exe with a similarly named file.
