livelySubProcess.exe is normally a helper executable installed with Lively Wallpaper, the open-source Windows app for animated wallpapers and screensavers. It is not a Windows core file. There is no name-only verdict. A legitimate copy should fit three facts: Lively is installed, the process opens from that installation, and its digital signature and hash are consistent with the file you intended to install. A file with the same name in an unrelated location, without a valid signature, or flagged by several independent scanners is not made safe by the familiar spelling.
One file-information site assigns a “50% dangerous” rating to the name. That is a heuristic label, not a measured infection probability and not evidence that every Lively copy is malicious. How do I find the real livelySubProcess.exe file?
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- On Processes or Details, locate
livelySubProcess.exe. If it is not visible, first reproduce the problem by opening Lively or the wallpaper that triggers it. - Right-click the process and choose Open file location. Record the full path before moving, renaming or deleting anything.
- In the process properties or Task Manager’s Details view, note the command line, publisher information and whether more than one copy is running.

How can I verify the signature and hash?
Windows Explorer can show a basic signature, but Microsoft’s Sigcheck utility gives a more complete record: version, timestamp, certificate chain, hash and (when queried) a VirusTotal result for that hash. Sigcheck is evidence for your decision, not a guarantee by itself.

Check in the graphical interface
- Right-click the file and choose Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures. Select the listed signer, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
- On General and Details, compare the product and file-version information with the Lively build you installed.
- If there is no Digital Signatures tab or validation fails, keep the file isolated while you investigate; do not “fix” the warning by granting an exclusion.
Check with Sigcheck
After downloading Sigcheck from Microsoft’s Sysinternals tools, open an elevated Command Prompt in the folder containing it and run:

Why is livelySubProcess.exe using CPU, memory or disk?
Normal activity can occur while Lively renders a video, webpage, GIF, screensaver or application-based wallpaper. High or continuous use is more often a rendering problem, a missing runtime, a conflict with overlay software, or a damaged installation than a reason to delete the executable.
Measure the behavior first
- In Task Manager, watch CPU, memory and GPU columns for several minutes rather than reacting to a brief spike while a wallpaper starts.
- Note which wallpaper, screensaver or display is active when the load appears.
- Use Open file location to ensure the busy process is the same Lively copy you verified.
- Close Lively from its tray menu and check whether the load ends. If it does not, investigate a second process or an unrelated executable with a similar name.
Reduce rendering conflicts
Temporarily disable overlays, capture layers and hardware-monitoring overlays, then test the wallpaper again. Lively’s documentation specifically calls out overlay software when crashes or performance overlays occur. Re-enable one overlay at a time after the problem is gone so you can identify the conflict instead of leaving every feature disabled.

Lively documents a .NET Core x86 Desktop Runtime requirement. Web wallpapers can also require the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. Install the required runtime from its official Microsoft source for your Windows architecture, restart Lively, and test the same wallpaper. A runtime error can look like a subprocess crash even though the executable itself is intact.
Use Lively’s own logs
Open the log option in Lively’s settings, or browse to:

Look for the wallpaper name, a missing runtime, access-denied messages, GPU initialization errors and the process path. - Exit Lively completely from its notification-area icon.
- Start it again and select a simple built-in or static wallpaper.
- Test the wallpaper that originally failed. If only one item causes the error, remove or replace that item rather than the entire application.
- Test with screensaver playback disabled temporarily if the crash occurs only when the display locks.
2. Install or repair prerequisites
Confirm that the .NET Core x86 Desktop Runtime is installed as required by Lively. For web wallpapers, verify the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. Restart Windows after installing a missing runtime, then retest before changing system files.
3. Remove an overlay or capture conflict
Turn off game overlays, recording overlays and hardware-monitoring overlays one at a time. If the error disappears, leave the conflicting overlay disabled for Lively or update that overlay before trying it again.

4. Check logs and permissions
Use Lively’s log folder to identify the failing component. If the log reports access denied, confirm that the package has not been moved manually and that security software is not quarantining a required file. Avoid changing permissions on the WindowsApps directory just to force an executable to run.
5. Repair by reinstalling Lively
If the verified file is missing or corrupt, uninstall Lively and reinstall it from its official Microsoft Store or installer channel. Do not replace one DLL or executable with a loose download from a file-sharing site. Preserve the logs first; they can show whether the failure was caused by a wallpaper, runtime or installation update.
After reinstalling, update Lively through the same channel you chose, launch it once, and test with a simple wallpaper before restoring custom content. What should I do if antivirus blocks livelySubProcess.exe?

Microsoft Defender Offline boots Windows into a trusted scanning environment so malware can be checked before the normal desktop and its startup processes load. Microsoft estimates the scan at about 15 minutes, but the actual duration varies by device.
- Save open work and connect the device to power.
- Open Windows Security.
- Choose Virus & threat protection, then Scan options.
- Select Microsoft Defender Offline scan and choose Scan now.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the scan. Review the result in Windows Security after you sign back in.
Use this scan for a suspicious or persistent executable, not as a substitute for checking the path and signature. A clean result still leaves the application-repair steps relevant if Lively is crashing because of a runtime or damaged package.
Can I delete livelySubProcess.exe?
Do not delete it while Lively is installed and you are still diagnosing the problem. Removing a helper file can make Lively fail, erase evidence needed for a security report, and cause an updater or repair operation to restore the file later.
