livelywpf.exe is normally the Windows Presentation Foundation process used by Lively Wallpaper, not a Windows system component. It is usually legitimate when you installed Lively deliberately and the executable is in Lively’s expected folder. A copy in an unrelated directory, an invalid signature, an unexpected startup entry, or a security detection needs investigation rather than automatic deletion. This guide shows how to verify the file, decide whether an alert is credible, fix “livelywpf.exe has stopped working,” and remove the process safely when Lively is not wanted.
What is livelywpf.exe?
livelywpf.exe is generally the WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) application process belonging to Lively Wallpaper, the open-source animated wallpaper and screensaver program. It is a third-party application executable, not a core Windows file. File.net and SystemLookup associate the filename with Lively Wallpaper; some older database records also associate the name with Rainmeter. Those database associations identify a common use, not proof that every file with this name is genuine.

Lively uses the process to provide its desktop interface and wallpaper playback functions. If Lively is running, seeing livelywpf.exe in Task Manager can therefore be normal. If you never installed Lively, the process appeared after downloading unrelated software, or it runs from an unexplained folder, treat the filename as a lead for verification rather than as an identification.
Where should a legitimate livelywpf.exe be located?
Location and installation context are more useful than the name alone. For the installer distribution, Lively documents application data under %LocalAppData%Lively Wallpaper, with temporary Lively data in a related local folder. The wallpaper library location can be changed in Lively’s settings, so a user-selected library may sit elsewhere.

The Microsoft Store edition keeps its package data under a path similar to %LocalAppData%Packages12030rocksdanister.LivelyWallpaper_97hta09mmv6hyLocalCacheLocal. SystemLookup also records a Lively startup entry under Program FilesLively Wallpaper. Exact subfolders can change between releases and distribution channels.
A copy in C:Windows, C:WindowsSystem32, a random temporary-download directory, or a startup command pointing to an unfamiliar location is inconsistent with the common Lively locations. That does not by itself prove malware—software can be moved or repackaged—but it raises the priority of signature, hash, and security checks. File.info likewise warns that malware can imitate the filename.
Is livelywpf.exe safe or a virus?
The accurate answer is conditional: a copy installed with Lively Wallpaper, in a plausible Lively path and carrying a consistent publisher signature, is usually expected; an unexpected copy or a file detected by security software should be treated as suspicious until verified. Its index contains several other livelywpf.exe records carrying the same label, as well as related DLL records marked “General Threat” or “Trojan.Downloader.” These are reputation records for particular samples. They do not demonstrate that every executable installed by Lively is malicious, but they do justify checking the exact file rather than dismissing an alert because the name looks familiar.
Lively is described by its project as fully open source, meaning its code can be audited or built by others. Open source does not make an unverified download safe, however; a repackaged or replaced executable can carry the same name while having a different hash and publisher.
How do I verify my copy of livelywpf.exe?

- Open the file location. Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager, findlivelywpf.exeunder Processes or Details, right-click it, and choose Open file location. Record the complete path. If the process exits before you can do this, search the path shown in the process properties or inspect the startup command in Task Manager’s Startup apps tab. - Inspect the publisher signature. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and open Digital Signatures. Select the signature, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports a valid signature and a publisher consistent with the Lively distribution you installed. An absent or invalid signature is a warning, not a conclusive verdict; some legitimate builds or repackaged components may not present the same metadata.
- Calculate a hash when you have a reference. In PowerShell, run
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 'C:fullpathlivelywpf.exe'. Compare the result only with a hash published for that exact release or sample. The MD5 value reported by ThreatInfo (14f15f8277baadb4fd7931b631189a28) identifies its 190 KB sample; it should not be treated as a universal hash for every Lively installation. - Run a full security scan. Use the anti-malware product already installed on Windows and let it scan the file and the surrounding system. If it quarantines the file, keep the detection details, path, and hash before choosing removal. A heuristic alert can be a false positive, but it is still a reason to verify the source and exact binary rather than to restore the file blindly.

Why does livelywpf.exe stop working?
Most failures are application or environment problems, not evidence of infection. Common causes include a damaged .NET or Visual C++ dependency, conflicts with frame-rate overlay software, the process being assigned to an unsuitable GPU, antivirus interference, a corrupted Lively installation, or a wallpaper that triggers a playback failure. How do I read Lively’s logs before changing anything?
Lively’s documented log path is C:Users<UserName>AppDataLocalLively Wallpaperlogs. You can also open Lively and choose Settings → Misc. → Log File. Save or copy the relevant log, along with the time of the failure and the wallpaper that was active, before uninstalling or deleting the local data. That record can show whether the process failed while loading a dependency, creating a rendering surface, or starting a particular wallpaper.
If Lively cannot open its settings, browse to the log directory in File Explorer. Do not post personal paths or tokens from a log publicly; redact your Windows user name and any network locations when sharing a report.
How do I restore the dependencies Lively requires?
For the installer distribution, Lively documents the .NET Core 6 x86 Desktop Runtime and the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable as required components. The installer normally handles their setup, but an interrupted update, system cleanup, or damaged runtime can leave the process unable to start.

- If an entry is present, use its available Modify or Repair option, then restart Windows.
- If the component is missing, obtain the runtime through the Lively installer or the official Microsoft runtime channel appropriate to your Windows architecture. Avoid downloading a standalone DLL from an unverified DLL website.
- Launch Lively again and check the newly written log if the error persists.
The Microsoft Store build handles its package dependencies differently and does not require the same separate host-dependency installation described for the installer build.
Could an overlay or the wrong GPU be causing the crash?
Yes. Lively’s troubleshooting guidance specifically calls out frame-rate overlay software, including RivaTuner Statistics Server, as a possible startup conflict. Temporarily close the overlay and test Lively. If that resolves the crash, configure the overlay to ignore Lively rather than disabling all graphics monitoring permanently. The executable paths that need an exception can differ by installation channel, so use the path you recorded from Task Manager.

Systems with integrated and discrete graphics adapters can also assign Lively to the weaker or incompatible adapter. In Settings → System → Display → Graphics, add the Lively executable if it is not listed, choose Options, select the stronger GPU, save, and restart Lively. If the problem began after a graphics-driver change, test the other adapter setting and check the Lively log for rendering errors.
Antivirus heuristics can also block or terminate a Lively process. Verify the path, signature, and hash first. If your security product identifies the exact file as malicious, quarantine it; if it reports a behavior-based suspicion on a verified installation, submit the file to the security vendor for review rather than creating a broad exclusion for every Lively executable.

Use an official distribution route instead of downloading a loose livelywpf.exe. Lively documents two supported routes with different requirements and feature sets:

The installer documentation lists a minimum of 4 GB of RAM and 1 GB of storage, in addition to the Windows version requirement. These are documented minimums, not a promise that every wallpaper or video will perform smoothly on that hardware.
- Export or copy wallpapers, custom playlists, and settings you need. For the installer edition, check the local Lively data folder before uninstalling. Store data is held in the package path and is managed by Windows’ app system.
- Uninstall the existing edition from Settings → Apps → Installed apps. Read the uninstall prompt carefully: the installer can ask whether to delete its LocalAppData folder. Keep the folder if you need its wallpapers or logs.
- Restart Windows, then install the same distribution you intend to keep from its official release channel. Mixing an installer copy with a Store package can leave you troubleshooting the wrong data directory.
- Install or repair the documented runtimes when prompted, launch Lively, and test with a built-in or simple wallpaper before restoring custom content.
- Reintroduce custom wallpapers one at a time. If one wallpaper consistently reproduces the crash, remove or replace that item instead of repeatedly reinstalling the whole application.
Can I delete livelywpf.exe?
Do not delete the executable while Lively is installed and you are still trying to repair it. Removing one file can leave an incomplete installation, break updates, and make later diagnosis harder. If you need to stop it temporarily, close Lively from its notification-area icon or end the process in Task Manager, then work through the log and dependency checks.
Removal is appropriate when you never installed Lively, the file is in an implausible location, its signature is invalid, or a security scan confirms malware. First disconnect the process from startup if necessary, then quarantine it with your security product and remove the associated application through Settings → Apps → Installed apps. Afterward, inspect Task Manager → Startup apps and any scheduled task that points to the same path. Do not restore a quarantined file merely because deleting it caused an error; determine which legitimate application, if any, was using it.

Why is livelywpf.exe running at startup?
Lively can register a startup entry so animated wallpapers are restored when you sign in. SystemLookup classifies the known Lively startup item as a user-choice entry, so disabling it is reasonable when you do not want automatic launch.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps, click the Lively entry, and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows and confirm that the process no longer launches automatically.
- Open Lively manually when needed. If it still starts, inspect its own settings for a launch-at-login option and check for a second startup command pointing to another copy.
Disabling startup does not uninstall Lively or delete wallpapers. It only changes when the application begins.

Why might security software flag an open-source wallpaper program?
Security products use behavior heuristics as well as known signatures, and animated-wallpaper software can interact with graphics, overlays, startup settings, and downloaded content.
