MachineIdCreator.exe appears to be an AVG Technologies Win32 component, usually found in an AVG installer or temporary configuration folder—not a Windows system process. A third-party record for one sample showed 0/68 detections on September 24, 2026, but its AVG signature was valid only through 2013. That makes the filename conditionally identifiable, not automatically safe. Verify the exact path, digital signature, hash and current Microsoft Defender result before keeping, quarantining or deleting it. The repair path is to identify the instance, update and scan with Defender, remove unwanted AVG remnants, and repair or reinstall AVG only when the evidence points to a damaged installation.

What is machineidcreator.exe?

MachineIdCreator.exe is recorded as a Win32 executable with the product name MachineIdCreator, publisher AVG Technologies and version 14.0.0.14. The commonly reported location is:

C:Documents and Settings{user}Local settingstemp{random}.tmpconfigfilesmachineidcreator.exe

That path is characteristic of an AVG installer or configuration operation running from a temporary directory. The metadata comes from a third-party reputation database, not a current AVG support bulletin, so it establishes provenance for the analyzed file rather than proving what every file with this name does.

The same filename in an expected AVG temporary directory, signed by AVG Technologies, is less suspicious than a copy in Downloads, an unexplained startup folder or an unrelated application’s directory. File names can be copied or assigned to replacement programs; location and identity checks matter more than spelling.

Why a temporary path can be normal

Installers commonly unpack helper executables into a randomly named folder, perform configuration work, and remove those files when the operation finishes. Consequently, seeing an AVG-related file beneath a user Temp directory is not, by itself, proof of infection. It can also be a remnant: an interrupted update may leave the extracted files behind after the main setup process stops.

Look at the surrounding files and the parent folder, not just the executable. Other AVG files in the same temporary configuration directory support the installer explanation. A lone copy in a newly created startup folder, a browser download directory or a path belonging to unrelated software deserves a stricter review.

Is machineidcreator.exe safe?

There is no universal yes-or-no answer. A historical analysis dated September 24, 2026 reported 0/68 detections for its sample, which is reassuring but not a lifetime safety guarantee. The record also showed an AVG Technologies signature whose validity ended in 2013. An old or invalid signature cannot authenticate a newly acquired copy.

Microsoft’s classification guidance says, “Not all uncommon programs are malicious, but the risk in the unknown category is higher for the typical user.” Treat an exact copy as trustworthy only when several checks agree:

  • Its full path fits an installed AVG product or a temporary AVG installation job.
  • File Properties → Digital Signatures identifies AVG Technologies and Windows reports the signature as valid.
  • A current hash lookup or reputable scanner does not flag the file.
  • Microsoft Defender has current security intelligence and reports no threat.
  • An AVG installation is present and still needs the component.

Do not call it malware solely because it is in Temp, and do not call it safe solely because its name matches an old AVG record.

What the old scan result does and does not tell you

A 0/68 result describes one submitted sample at one point in time. It does not cover a file that was renamed, replaced, modified after the scan or downloaded years later. Likewise, a publisher field can be copied into a misleading display name, while a failed signature can indicate corruption, tampering or simply an obsolete package. Current Defender intelligence and the exact file’s cryptographic hash are more useful for a present-day decision.

Why does machineidcreator.exe keep crashing?

Historical incident records show an AVG-specific failure pattern. A 2012 event log listed version 10.2.0.2 of machineidcreator.exe faulting in avguidx.dll version 2012.0.0.1. Another report placed the executable in an AVG temporary configuration folder with other AVG files. Those records make a damaged, outdated or partially removed AVG component a plausible explanation, but they do not diagnose every current crash.

Interrupted updates

An AVG update that stops midway can leave the executable and its supporting DLLs at different versions. When Windows later launches the component, the mismatch can produce an application error or an avguidx.dll fault. Power loss, a forced restart or security software blocking part of setup can all leave an incomplete temporary package.

Incomplete cleanup

A cleanup utility or manual deletion may remove part of a temporary installer while leaving a shortcut, scheduled task or parent AVG process that still calls the file. The next launch then fails because the executable or its dependencies are missing. Repeated errors after deleting only the EXE usually mean the parent installation still needs to be repaired or removed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Old software after a system change

An older AVG component may be invoked after Windows updates, a migration or a product upgrade changes its supporting libraries. A crash timestamp, faulting module and file path are needed to distinguish this from a malicious replacement. If the event names avguidx.dll, compare the versions and signer information of both files rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

How can I identify the exact copy before changing anything?

  1. Record the path. In Task Manager, right-click the process (if running) and choose Open file location. For a historical crash, open Event Viewer, go to Windows Logs → Application, locate the matching timestamp and record the faulting application, faulting module and path if shown.
  2. Check creation and modification times. Right-click the file, select Properties and note the dates. A file created during an AVG installation is more consistent with the expected role than one appearing after a suspicious download. Dates are clues, not proof, because copying a file changes its timestamps.
  3. Inspect the signer. In Properties → Digital Signatures, select the signature, choose Details and confirm that Windows says it is valid. A missing, invalid or unrelated signer is a reason to stop and scan rather than launch the file. Record the signer name and certificate status even if the signature is old.
  4. Check the parent product. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps (or Control Panel → Programs and Features on older Windows) and see whether AVG is installed. Do not assume an AVG-branded file is needed if no AVG product remains. Note the installed product and version before uninstalling anything.
  5. Calculate a hash if you need stronger identity evidence. In PowerShell, run Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 "C:fullpathmachineidcreator.exe" and save the result for comparison with a current reputable scanner or an incident-response professional. Hashes identify the exact bytes; they do not by themselves prove that those bytes are benign.

If the file is actively running, avoid opening it repeatedly just to observe the error. Capture the evidence first, then scan. Preserve the path and hash if you plan to ask AVG, Microsoft or a technician for help.

How do I scan machineidcreator.exe with Microsoft Defender?

Update protection before interpreting a result. Microsoft delivers Defender security intelligence through Windows Update, and Windows Security lets you check for updates manually.

  1. Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection updates.
  2. Select Check for updates and wait for the security-intelligence update to complete.
  3. Return to Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, select Full scan and start it. A full scan can take substantial time on a large drive.
  4. If the file returns, security settings change unexpectedly or suspicious behavior continues, choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save work first; Windows restarts and scans before normal startup.

You can also right-click the specific file in File Explorer and use the Microsoft Defender scan command when that option is available. A targeted check is useful for a quick result, but it should not replace a full scan when the file is unknown or repeatedly recreated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Defender detects the executable, choose Quarantine or the action Windows recommends. Do not restore it merely because an old database once reported zero detections. If you believe the detection is incorrect, use Microsoft’s malware-sample submission route from the Defender result or Microsoft Security portal instead of distributing the file yourself.

Can I delete machineidcreator.exe from Temp?

Delete it only after you know which application owns it and after scanning. A temporary copy may be recreated by an active AVG installer, and deleting it while that installer is running can leave the parent product incomplete.

  1. Close AVG and any installer or update window.
  2. Restart Windows if the file is locked.
  3. Check Settings → Apps → Installed apps for AVG. If you still use it, prefer the product’s repair, update or uninstall option rather than deleting individual files.
  4. If AVG is no longer wanted, uninstall it normally, restart, then remove only the leftover temporary folder if Windows confirms it is no longer in use.
  5. Empty the Recycle Bin after a final Defender scan. If Windows refuses deletion, do not take ownership of random system folders; investigate the process holding the file.

Do not use a registry cleaner to remove references, and do not download a “file unlocker” or replacement executable from an unknown site. Those actions can obscure which AVG component is responsible and can introduce another untrusted program.

A file in Downloads, an unexplained startup location or a directory unrelated to AVG should not be treated as disposable Temp clutter. Preserve its path and hash and complete an offline scan first.

How do I repair an AVG installation that causes the error?

Repair or reinstall the parent AVG product only when the file is signed consistently, scans clean and the crash clearly belongs to an AVG installation you still need. This is a practical response to the historical AVG and avguidx.dll evidence, not a documented current AVG fix for every version.

  1. Record AVG settings, license information and the exact error timestamp.
  2. Use Settings → Apps → Installed apps → AVG → Advanced options when a Repair or Modify action is provided; otherwise use AVG’s own uninstaller.
  3. Restart Windows and download a current installer from AVG’s official source. Avoid installers offered by file-sharing sites or pop-up advertisements. Microsoft advises downloading apps only from trusted sources, such as Microsoft Store or the software maker’s official site.
  4. Install the current build, allow its components to update, restart again and check whether the same event reappears.
  5. If the error persists despite a clean installation, collect the Event Viewer entry, path, signer status and Defender result for AVG support or a qualified technician.

Do not download a replacement avguidx.dll from a DLL-library website. A DLL with the right filename can be unsigned, mismatched or tampered with, and it obscures the original cause. Keep the quarantined copy available for submission rather than replacing it from an unverified download.

Should I keep, quarantine or reinstall?

Decision Provenance Security result User need Next action
Keep after verification Expected AVG path and valid signer Current scan is clean An AVG installation still requires it Keep AVG updated and monitor for recurrence
Quarantine or remove Unknown path or failed signature Defender or another current scanner flags it No confirmed need for the file Quarantine, run Defender Offline and review startup entries
Repair or reinstall the parent AVG component AVG is installed but files appear damaged Scan is clean while crashes continue The AVG product is needed Use the official AVG installer and retest

The “keep” choice is conditional, not permanent. Recheck if the file moves, its signer changes, Defender begins detecting it or an AVG update installs a different copy. The “remove” choice also includes removing the unwanted parent AVG application through Windows, rather than repeatedly deleting one extracted file.

What warning signs require escalation?

  • The executable repeatedly recreates itself after removal.
  • It runs from a user download, an unrelated program folder or a random startup location.
  • It makes unexplained network connections, disables security controls or creates new administrator accounts.
  • The digital signature is absent, invalid or belongs to a publisher other than AVG Technologies.
  • Defender detects it again after quarantine or detects additional files with unrelated names.

For these symptoms, disconnect the computer from sensitive networks, run Microsoft Defender Offline and seek professional incident response. Do not keep launching the file to “test” it. If the computer contains business or financial data, tell the responder when the file appeared, what scans ran and whether credentials were entered while the suspicious process was active.

What should you remember about machineidcreator.exe?

The available evidence identifies MachineIdCreator.exe with AVG Technologies, not Microsoft. A 0/68 result applies to one historical sample, while the old signature date limits what that evidence can establish today. The exact path, signer, hash and current Defender result are the deciding facts. Update Defender, perform a full scan, use Offline scan when behavior persists, and remove unwanted software through Windows or its normal uninstaller before considering a manual deletion.

Microsoft’s MSRT guidance explains that the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool helps remove malicious software, but an offline Defender scan is the more direct next step when this file keeps returning or security settings are altered. Neither tool substitutes for identifying the parent application and fixing an incomplete AVG installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is machineidcreator.exe normally located?

The recorded example was under an AVG temporary configuration path inside the user Temp area. A copy in Downloads, Startup or an unrelated application directory has a different risk profile and should be investigated by path and signature rather than by filename.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does machineidcreator.exe belong to Windows?

No. The available file record names AVG Technologies as publisher and describes an AVG-related component. It is not identified as a core Windows executable, so removing it should be considered only in relation to an AVG installation.

Why does machineidcreator.exe keep crashing after I delete it?

Deleting the EXE can leave an AVG shortcut, scheduled task or parent process that still calls it. An interrupted update or mismatched avguidx.dll can also recreate the failure. Repair or uninstall the parent AVG product instead of repeatedly deleting individual files.

Can I delete the file while AVG is installed?

Not safely by default. Close installers, scan the file and use AVG’s repair, update or uninstall option. Manual deletion during an update can leave the product incomplete and cause more errors.

What if Defender finds machineidcreator.exe after an AVG reinstall?

Leave the item quarantined, note the detection name and submit the file to Microsoft if you suspect a false positive. Do not restore it simply because the file appeared during an installer run; verify the signer and obtain a fresh installer from AVG.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Event Viewer tell me whether the file is malicious?

Event Viewer can show the faulting application, module, version and timestamp, which helps connect a crash to AVG or another program. It cannot by itself establish that the executable is safe, so pair the log with path, signature and current security-scan results.

What does a valid AVG signature prove?

It supports the file’s publisher identity and helps distinguish an expected AVG component from an unrelated executable. It does not guarantee that the component is current, needed or free of every problem, so check the path and current Defender result too.

Should I download avguidx.dll to stop the crash?

No. DLL-download sites may provide unsigned, mismatched or tampered files. Repair or reinstall the AVG product from its official source and preserve the Event Viewer details for support.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Treat machineidcreator.exe as an AVG-associated file only after verifying its path, signer, hash and current Defender result. Keep a verified copy that belongs to an AVG installation you need; quarantine suspicious copies; and repair or uninstall the parent product instead of deleting random files or downloading replacement DLLs.
