mal.exe is only a filename, not a single known Windows component. Public reports describe different files with that name, different SHA-256 hashes and different analysis results, so you cannot decide whether your copy is safe from the name alone. Identify the exact path, publisher, digital signature, hash and Microsoft Defender detection, then quarantine the file if you are unsure. The troubleshooting path also depends on whether Windows is showing an antivirus detection or an executable error.
What is mal.exe?
Windows does not assign one universal meaning to the name mal.exe. More than one unrelated executable can use it, and a filename can be changed easily. A file in a legitimate application’s installation folder, a temporary download directory or a suspicious startup location may all be called mal.exe while being completely different binaries.

That is why a filename-only search is weak evidence. The useful identity is the combination of the full path, file size and timestamps, publisher, signature status and cryptographic hash. Microsoft Defender’s exact detection name is also important because it describes what the security engine identified, rather than merely repeating the filename.
NIST defines malware as “Hardware, firmware, or software that is intentionally included or inserted in a system for a harmful purpose.” A file named mal.exe might meet that definition, but the name itself does not prove intent or behavior.

Is mal.exe safe?
It may be safe, unwanted or malicious; there is no honest filename-wide verdict. Public analysis records refer to different samples and should be treated as evidence about those exact hashes only.
| Record | What was reported | What it proves |
|---|---|---|
| ANY.RUN sandbox, analyzed March 13, 2026 | A submitted mal.exe showed malicious activity and received a LockBit label while running on Windows 10 Professional build 19044, 64-bit. |
Only that submitted sample’s behavior. The report warns that public analysis can be affected by user actions and does not guarantee maliciousness. |
| MalwareBazaar sample | Tagged Formbook; SHA-256 8139aa2208142fed980af1077537858a9f8b6e9f8ad409045bef4e56902197ce; first seen January 11, 2021. |
Evidence about that hash, not every file called mal.exe. The database also cautions that it cannot guarantee a sample is malicious. |
| Gridinsoft report, April 1, 2025 | SHA-256 cce72f36b71697550815b37fe3fa5351486b105d4a58c37c7b0ec8c70d486388 was detected by 4 of 73 engines. |
A hash-specific scan result. It is not a 4-of-73 rate for the filename or a prevalence statistic. |
| FreeFixer record | A different mal.exe entry showed 44 of 64 engines detecting it. The result date was not clearly supplied. |
Another sample-specific result; its metadata does not establish an official Windows identity for the filename. |
Do not combine those labels or detection counts into a single claim about your computer. A match is meaningful only when the hash is the same. If your file has a different hash, the public record does not answer whether it is safe.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What details should I collect before deciding?
Record the evidence first, without opening an unknown executable. This gives you something concrete to compare and to provide to Microsoft or a support technician.
- Find the full path. In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection, then Protection history, and open the relevant entry. Note the affected path, detection name, timestamp and action. If Windows displayed an error instead, copy the complete message and any error code.
- Check the file’s properties. In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties and review General for location and size. The Details tab may show product and version information. Do not treat a product name as proof of legitimacy.
- Inspect the signature. On the Digital Signatures tab, check whether a signer is listed and select Details to see whether Windows reports that the signature is valid. An absent or invalid signature is a warning, not automatic proof of malware; some legitimate utilities are unsigned.
- Calculate the SHA-256 hash. Open PowerShell and run
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 -LiteralPath "C:fullpathmal.exe", replacing the path with the exact location. Copy the resulting hash precisely, including every character. - Record the origin. Note which application installed the file, whether it came from an email, archive, browser download or removable drive, and whether the file appeared after a recent installation. An unexpected origin deserves more caution than a file installed by a program you recognize.
- Compare like with like. If you consult a public analysis, compare its complete SHA-256 hash. A matching filename, icon, version string or detection label without a matching hash is not enough.
What should I do if Microsoft Defender detects mal.exe?
When the alert is about a possible threat and you are uncertain, quarantine is the safer choice. Microsoft explains that allowing an item stops Windows Security from acting on it, while quarantine blocks it; do not choose Allow on device merely to make the notification disappear.

- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection, then Protection history.
- Open the
mal.exeentry and record the detection name, path, timestamp and current status. - If you do not have verified evidence that the file is legitimate, choose the quarantine action offered by Windows Security. Do not restore it while you are still investigating.
- Open Virus & threat protection updates and select Check for updates so the security intelligence is current.
- Return to Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, select Full scan and start it. A full scan can take considerably longer than a quick scan.
- If the detection returns, or Windows cannot complete the action, use Scan options to start Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Windows restarts into a separate scanning environment, so save work first and expect the computer to reboot.
- If you believe the exact file is legitimate, verify its publisher and signature and submit that exact sample to Microsoft for false-positive review. Do not create a broad exclusion while you wait.
Microsoft says Defender Antivirus tries to block malware before it can infect a device. That protection is strongest when security intelligence is updated and the file is handled through Windows Security rather than an untrusted download site.
Should I download another mal.exe or a replacement DLL?
No. Do not obtain an executable or DLL from a file-sharing site or a generic “DLL/EXE download” page. You could replace one unknown file with another, lose the evidence needed for analysis or introduce a second threat.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf a verified application is missing a file, reinstall or repair that application using its official installer or the publisher’s support channel after you have dealt with the detection. Keep the original alert details and hash; deleting them makes later diagnosis harder.
How do I fix a Windows error involving mal.exe?
First determine what kind of error you have. “Threat found,” “action failed” or “scan failed” messages belong to Defender. A dialog that appears when an application starts, or a crash with an executable error code, is a different problem. There is no universal repair command because the title does not identify a Windows version, path, application or error code.

If the message is a Defender detection
Use Protection history, quarantine when uncertain, update security intelligence and run a full scan. If the same item repeatedly returns, perform an Offline scan and preserve the exact detection name and path for a Microsoft review. Do not allow the file simply because an application reports that it cannot start without it.
If Defender itself reports an action, scan or engine failure
Open Event Viewer by pressing Start and typing Event Viewer. Browse to Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > Windows Defender > Operational. Open events at the time of the failure and inspect both the General and Details tabs.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Record the event ID, error code, operation and file path. Defender events cover different conditions, including scan start and completion, a failed malware action, definition reversion, real-time-protection failure and engine failure. The correct remedy depends on which condition is recorded, so do not apply a fix intended for one event to another. For a repeated or unresolved Defender malfunction, use Microsoft’s support channels with the event details.
If an application crashes when it starts
- Do not repeatedly launch an unverified
mal.exe. Quarantine it if Defender flagged it or if its origin is unknown. - Identify the parent application from the file path and the Properties details. If the executable belongs to a program you intentionally installed, obtain a fresh installer from that program’s official source rather than copying a replacement file.
- After the file’s safety is established, install pending Windows and application updates, restart the computer and test again. Keep the original error text if the crash continues.
- Check Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application for an application error at the crash time. Note the faulting application, faulting module and exception code; these details distinguish an application defect from a security action.
Do not disable real-time protection as a troubleshooting shortcut. An exclusion tells Defender not to check the excluded file or process in real time and can leave the device exposed. If a vendor insists that an exclusion is necessary, limit it to the smallest verified path, document it, and remove it after testing.

What is Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool, and can it identify this file?
The Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) is Microsoft’s utility for prevalent malware. Microsoft generally distributes it monthly through Windows Update and also offers a standalone download. The Microsoft page showed version 5.143, published July 14, 2026, at the time of the available information; check the current release before relying on that version number.
MSRT is an additional check, not a substitute for identifying your file by hash or interpreting the exact Defender alert. It does not turn every ambiguous filename into a definitive diagnosis.

Can I delete mal.exe manually?
Do not delete it before recording its path, hash and Defender details. Manual deletion can break the application that installed it and removes evidence needed for a false-positive review. Quarantine through Windows Security is the safer first action when the file is untrusted.

Why does the same filename have different antivirus results?
Security engines evaluate file contents, behavior and reputation, not just the text of the filename. Two files named mal.exe can therefore receive different labels, especially when they have different hashes or were analyzed at different times.
What information should I include in a support request?
Include the Windows edition and build, the complete error text, the Defender detection name, event ID, full path, SHA-256 hash, signature status and the time of the failure. Mention whether quarantine, a full scan or an Offline scan completed, but do not attach an unknown executable unless the support channel specifically requests it.
Can an antivirus alert be a false positive?
Yes. A legitimate file can occasionally be detected incorrectly, which is why Microsoft provides a review process for suspected false positives. Verify the publisher and exact hash first; never create a broad exclusion solely because an alert is inconvenient.
