Marvel Rivals is a free-to-play, team-based player-versus-player shooter built around Marvel heroes and villains, each with distinct abilities. It launched in 2024, so it is no longer a new release; “Overwatch-like” is a useful broad label for its hero-shooter format, not proof that the two games play identically.
What is Marvel Rivals?
Developed and published by NetEase Games in collaboration with Marvel Games, Marvel Rivals puts teams of superhero and supervillain characters into objective-focused battles across dynamic environments. The developers described the launch format as 6v6 action. Is Marvel Rivals free to play?
Yes. The development team’s December 5, 2024 monetization post said: “As you know, Marvel Rivals is free to download and heroes, maps, and other gameplay elements are completely free.” The post also described optional cosmetic purchases and a Luxury Battle Pass, so free access to gameplay does not mean every optional item is free. What platforms is Marvel Rivals on?
The official launch announcement lists Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, the Epic Games Store, and the game’s official website as launch channels. The release FAQ says players can play together when they are on the same server. Is Marvel Rivals like Overwatch?
At a high level, yes: both fit the team-based hero-shooter description, with playable characters whose abilities shape combat. That shorthand helps explain the genre, but the available official information does not establish a detailed one-to-one comparison or show that either game is better.

A fair comparison would need to examine viewpoint and combat feel, team size and roles, character abilities, platform and cross-play rules, how gameplay is monetized, and the pace of updates. The confirmed 6v6 launch framing and Marvel character roster establish the format, but they do not answer questions about current balance, matchmaking, or comparative quality.
How large is the roster?
NetEase and Marvel reported 33 heroes for Season 0 in December 2024. That is a launch-era count, not a reliable figure for the current roster in this live-service game: NetEase Games’ Season 0 launch announcement.

What can change after launch?
Marvel Rivals is a live-service game, so its roster, seasons, balance, platform features, and prices may change. The launch announcements establish the original release model and platform list; they do not establish the current state of those details. For decisions that depend on today’s availability or terms, use the game’s current official notices and in-game information rather than treating launch figures as current.
