maxxaudiocontrol.exe is normally the Waves MaxxAudio control program bundled with an OEM Realtek audio driver, especially on systems from manufacturers such as Dell. It provides enhancements such as speaker tuning, jack detection and microphone processing. A related 64-bit build may appear as MaxxAudioControl64.exe.
The filename alone does not prove that a copy is safe. Check its complete path, digital signature, vendor details, neighboring Waves files and persistence behavior. If the file is in an unexpected user-writable folder, has no credible signature, or returns after deletion, treat it as a possible impersonation and investigate it as malware. What is maxxaudiocontrol.exe?
maxxaudiocontrol.exe is the user-interface component of Waves MaxxAudio, usually installed with a computer maker’s Realtek audio package. Dell says many of its computers include MaxxAudio in the Realtek driver and that the technology is powered by Waves Audio. The program is not a core Windows executable; it belongs to an optional audio enhancement layer supplied with particular hardware and driver packages.
MaxxAudio can control audio profiles and processing that the basic Realtek driver does not provide. Depending on the computer, removing it may affect speaker tuning, headphone-jack detection, microphone processing or other OEM-specific controls while ordinary audio output continues to work.

Why do I see MaxxAudioControl.exe and MaxxAudioControl64.exe?
Different OEM packages use different builds and names. Older 32-bit installers commonly contain MaxxAudioControl.exe. A 64-bit package may install MaxxAudioControl64.exe while retaining MaxxAudioControl.exe as the original filename in its metadata. There is no single universal path, version or hash that applies to every computer.
One FreeFixer record identifies a sample called MaxxAudioControl64.exe as part of MaxxAudio from Waves Audio Ltd. That record lists original filename MaxxAudioControl.exe, product/file version 3.14.1.0 and SHA-256 cb59f1b7e2aa38cb18e55165f574c059ecc179e9ea9299e187a132e611de6539. Those values identify that particular sample only; they are not a universal signature for every OEM release.
Which related files are normal?
Installation contents vary by vendor and architecture. A legacy x86 Waves package has been documented under C:Program FilesWavesMaxxAudio with MaxxAudioControl.exe, WavesSvc.exe and WavesSysSvc.exe. An x64 inventory lists MaxxAudioControl64.exe, WavesSvc64.exe and WavesSysSvc64.exe. Seeing a coherent group from the same OEM or Waves package is more credible than seeing a lone executable copied into a random folder.
Is maxxaudiocontrol.exe safe?
It can be legitimate, but safety depends on the particular copy. A file in the installation directory created by your computer manufacturer, signed by a matching vendor and accompanied by the expected audio services is substantially more credible than one in a user-writable directory with an unknown publisher.
Signs that support a legitimate copy
- The path is inside the OEM’s audio-driver directory or a Waves installation tree, rather than a temporary or personal-data folder.
- Properties show a company, product name, original filename and version that match the Realtek/MaxxAudio package supplied for your model.
- The Digital Signatures tab contains a valid signature from the expected vendor, and Windows reports that the signature is valid.
- Related files such as
WavesSvc.exe,WavesSysSvc.exe,WavesSvc64.exeorWavesSysSvc64.exesit in the same coherent package. - Your computer manufacturer lists a Realtek driver containing Waves MaxxAudio for the exact model or service tag.
Warning signs that need investigation
- The executable is in
%AppData%,%Temp%, Downloads, a random folder or another location that ordinary users can write to. - The publisher is blank or unrelated, the signature is missing or invalid, or the file details conflict with the installed audio package.
- An unexplained scheduled task, startup entry, Defender exclusion or service keeps launching it.
- Unknown DLLs sit beside it, the file reappears after deletion, or its behavior does not match an audio control program.
These signs do not prove infection, but they justify disconnecting the PC from the network when compromise is plausible, preserving the path and persistence details, and running full and offline scans. On a work or school computer, involve IT before removing anything.
How can I check whether my copy is legitimate?
Use the following checks before deleting, restoring or replacing the file. Record what you find so you can compare it with the OEM package and explain the problem to support staff.

- Locate the running file. Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc, find the MaxxAudio process, right-click it and choose Open file location. Copy the complete path. If Task Manager is not showing the process, search the locations listed in your startup entries and installed-program directories instead of downloading a replacement executable. - Inspect file properties. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and review Details. Compare Company, Product name, Original filename and File version with the audio package installed for your model. A version difference from the FreeFixer sample is not automatically suspicious because OEMs ship multiple builds.
- Validate the signature. In Properties, open Digital Signatures, select the signer and choose Details. A valid signature from the expected vendor supports authenticity; an absent or mismatched signature is a reason to scan and investigate, not a reason to assume a clean file.
- Check the surrounding package. Look for the corresponding Waves service files and other audio-driver components in the same directory. A complete package is more persuasive than a single executable with no related installer or driver files.
- Review persistence and security history. Check Task Manager’s Startup apps, Task Scheduler, installed services and your security product’s exclusion list. Look in Windows Security’s protection history for quarantine or blocking events. An unexplained exclusion or scheduled task should be treated as a separate finding.
- Scan before taking action. Scan the file and its containing directory with your installed security product and Windows Security. Do not obtain a replacement EXE from an unverified file portal; use the computer manufacturer’s driver package or Waves’ official support channel.
Why does maxxaudiocontrol.exe stop working or show an application error?
The same message can result from a damaged OEM package, a security product blocking a service, a mismatch between the audio driver and Windows, or broader system-file corruption. The symptom and the file’s location determine which repair is appropriate.

How do I fix maxxaudiocontrol.exe errors manually?
Work through these steps in order. Stop when the problem is resolved; do not replace a verified OEM component with an arbitrary copy.
1. Restart and isolate the symptom
Restart Windows, then test the speakers, headphones, microphone and any dock or monitor audio separately. Note whether the error follows one output device, one headset, one user account or every audio path. This distinction helps separate an application problem from a driver or hardware problem.
2. Install pending Windows updates
Open Settings → Windows Update, install available updates and restart when prompted. Dell includes Windows updates in its audio troubleshooting sequence because an outdated Windows component can prevent an OEM audio package from loading correctly.

Open your antivirus product and Windows Security, then review quarantine and protection history for the MaxxAudio installer or Waves services. Dell specifically identifies WaveSvc64.exe and WavesSysSvc64.exe as processes to check when antivirus blocking leaves audio broken.
Do not broadly disable protection. If the file’s path, signature and package contents match the driver supplied for your computer, follow the security product’s documented allow-list or restore procedure, then restart. If those checks fail, leave the item quarantined and investigate it as a possible impersonation.

4. Reinstall the exact OEM audio driver
Use the support site for your computer maker, not a generic file-hosting site. For a Dell system, open Dell Product Support → Drivers and Downloads → Audio, identify the exact model or service tag, download the current Realtek/MaxxAudio package and run the manufacturer’s installer. Follow its prompts to repair or reinstall the package, then restart and test every affected output.
A model-specific package is important because MaxxAudio components are bundled differently across machines and architectures. Installing a package for another model can leave the control executable, services and underlying driver out of sync. If the installer offers a repair option, use it before attempting manual file replacement.
5. Use Waves Central only for Waves Central installation problems
If Waves Central itself reports an installation, login, permissions or uninstall error, use Waves’ official Central troubleshooting guidance and its current Windows download. Do not substitute a third-party mirror. This step addresses Waves Central’s installer workflow; it does not replace the computer manufacturer’s Realtek package when MaxxAudio arrived as part of that OEM driver.
6. Repair Windows components when the damage is broader
Use this step only when multiple Windows components are failing or the OEM reinstall does not explain the error. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run the commands in this order:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannowMicrosoft documents that DISM should run before System File Checker. The sfc /scannow command scans protected system files and replaces corrupted files with a cached copy when possible. These commands repair Windows components; they do not reinstall a vendor’s MaxxAudio package, so repeat the OEM driver installation if the audio component itself remains damaged.
7. Re-test services and startup behavior
After the reinstall or repair, restart again and confirm that the expected Waves services start without repeated errors. Check that the process path has not changed to a user-writable directory and that no unexplained scheduled task or security exclusion appeared. If the process still crashes but the path and signature are legitimate, capture the exact Windows error text and package version for the computer manufacturer’s support team.

What should I do if the file looks malicious?
Do not focus on deleting one filename. A suspicious copy may be launched by a scheduled task, service, startup entry or companion DLL, and deleting only the EXE can leave the persistence mechanism intact.
- Disconnect the computer from the network if you have a reasonable concern that it is compromised.
- Record the full path, file properties, signature result, creation time, related DLLs, services, scheduled tasks and security exclusions.
- Run a full scan and an offline scan with Windows Security or your established security product.
- On a managed computer, contact IT or your security team before making changes.
- After the system is cleared, reinstall the correct OEM audio package from the manufacturer’s support channel rather than copying back the questionable file.
Should I delete or disable maxxaudiocontrol.exe?
No—not merely because it appears in Task Manager. Deleting a verified OEM executable can break MaxxAudio features and leave the Realtek package in a damaged state. If you do not want the enhancements, remove or uninstall the associated MaxxAudio/Realtek package through Windows or the OEM installer so its services and dependencies are handled together.
If the copy is untrusted, do not “disable” it by deleting only the visible file. Investigate and remove the complete persistence chain after scanning. A legitimate copy can be repaired; an untrusted copy needs a security response.
