MedusaFlasher.exe is most closely associated with Medusa Box Flasher, a phone-servicing utility that can appear with files such as Medusa.exe, libmedusa.dll and Android ADB components. It is not automatically safe or malicious: scanner records describe different files with different hashes and results. Treat an unexpected copy as untrusted until you verify its path, provenance, digital signature, hash and current Microsoft Defender result. This guide explains what the file is, how it differs from Medusa ransomware, how to investigate errors, how to remove an unwanted installation and what to do if ransomware symptoms appear.
What is medusaflasher.exe?
MedusaFlasher.exe appears to be the executable for Medusa Box Flasher, software used to service or flash mobile phones. A software-inventory record places it in C:Program FilesGsmServerMedusa alongside Medusa.exe, libmedusa.dll, Android ADB libraries and an uninstaller. That location and companion-file pattern are consistent with an intentionally installed phone-servicing application, but a filename alone cannot prove that a particular copy belongs to it.

The utility is therefore different from a normal Windows component. You would expect it to be present only on a computer where someone deliberately installed phone-repair or servicing software. It may communicate with a connected handset and depend on USB or ADB drivers, so errors can appear when the program files, drivers or permissions do not match. A computer that has never been used for phone servicing has less obvious reason to contain this executable, especially in a startup, temporary or downloads directory.
One ThreatInfo record describes an 8 MB sample with the metadata “Medusa team” and “Medusa box.” Its MD5 is 2f8636e12a4bb88de99d7be6e222e19d, and the record’s last listed observation was November 21, 2022. A separate herdProtect record concerns a 57.7 MB installer listed in 2026. These are different records and should not be treated as one universal file specification.

| Record | What it reports | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| ThreatInfo | 8 MB sample; MD5 2f8636e12a4bb88de99d7be6e222e19d; “General Threat”; last observation November 21, 2022 |
Evidence about one exact sample, not every MedusaFlasher.exe copy |
| herdProtect | 57.7 MB installer; 0 of 68 scanners in the listed 2026 record | A historical result for a different installer hash, not a safety guarantee |
No authoritative, current publisher page, release note, signed-binary record or official SHA-256 for every release is established here. Do not infer a supported version, publisher signature or authenticity from the name alone.
Is medusaflasher.exe safe?
Only conditionally. Do not run an unexpected copy until you have checked the exact file. ThreatInfo labels one 8 MB sample “General Threat,” while herdProtect reports 0 detections out of 68 scanners for a different 57.7 MB installer record. Because the hashes and samples differ, neither result certifies every file named MedusaFlasher.exe.
A file in the expected GSMServer directory that was installed intentionally is more consistent with the phone-servicing utility. That still does not make it automatically safe: installers can be repackaged, replaced or delivered through an untrusted channel. Conversely, a hash mismatch only means that your file is not the exact sample represented by that record. It is a reason to investigate, not a standalone malware verdict.
How context changes the risk
| Context | What it suggests | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
C:Program FilesGsmServerMedusa, installed intentionally, with expected companion files |
Consistent with the Medusa Box Flasher utility | Verify signature and hash, scan it, then use it only if you trust the installation source |
| Downloads, a temporary folder, Startup, or an unexplained system directory | Unexpected or potentially unwanted execution | Do not launch it; preserve details and scan or quarantine the file |
| Any path plus encrypted files, ransom notes or disabled security services | Possible ransomware incident | Disconnect networks and follow the emergency procedure below |
Also consider who installed it and when. An old installer retained after a technician serviced phones has a different context from a file that appeared immediately after opening an unsolicited attachment. Keep the installer name, download location and account that performed the installation. Those details can be more useful than the display name in Apps.
Is medusaflasher.exe the same as Medusa or MedusaLocker ransomware?
No. The names refer to different things. Medusa Box Flasher is a phone-servicing application. Microsoft documents Ransom:Win32/MedusaLocker!ml as ransomware that can encrypt files, append the .MEDUSA extension, drop a !!!READ_ME_MEDUSA!!!.txt ransom note, stop security or backup services, delete shadow copies and create persistence. Malpedia separately catalogs the Medusa ransomware family and notes that similarly named families must be distinguished.
Those ransomware behaviors do not establish that every file called MedusaFlasher.exe is ransomware. Conversely, a malicious program can adopt a familiar name, copy an icon or place itself in a directory that looks legitimate. The deciding evidence is the actual path, hash, signature, origin, Defender result and behavior on the computer.

How should I verify a suspicious medusaflasher.exe file?
Use this sequence before opening the executable. It creates a record that can be reviewed by Microsoft support, an administrator or an incident-response specialist.
- Do not launch it. Write down the complete path, file size, creation and modification times, filename and how it arrived. If a security product already flagged it, save the detection name and protection-history entry. Avoid moving or renaming the file until these details are recorded.
- Compare the installation context. The inventory record’s expected directory is
C:Program FilesGsmServerMedusa. Look forMedusa.exe,libmedusa.dll, Android ADB libraries and an uninstaller. Companion files support the installation story, but they can also be copied, so treat them as context rather than proof. - Calculate and record a hash. The MD5
2f8636e12a4bb88de99d7be6e222e19didentifies the specific ThreatInfo sample only. A different hash means the sample is different; it is not an automatic malware verdict. Record the hash you obtain so a technician can compare the same file later. - Inspect the digital signature. Right-click the file, choose Properties, open Digital Signatures if present, select the signature and choose Details. An absent, invalid or unexpected signature increases uncertainty. A valid signature confirms that the signed publisher identity has not been altered after signing; it does not guarantee that the program is desirable or free of vulnerabilities.
- Scan the exact file. In File Explorer, right-click the executable or its containing folder and select Scan with Microsoft Defender. Allow the scan to finish and review Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history.
- Record provenance. Keep the installer name, download location, email or message that delivered it, and any detection details. Do not upload confidential files to a public scanning service without checking your organization’s policy.
If Defender identifies a threat, choose the recommended quarantine or removal action and do not restore the file merely because the filename looks familiar. If no threat is detected, continue to assess the source, signature, location and behavior; a clean scan is one piece of evidence, not a publisher certification.
Why does medusaflasher.exe keep producing Windows errors?
Errors can result from a damaged installation, missing companion DLLs, incompatible phone drivers, blocked permissions, an incomplete update or an unwanted file being launched at startup. The message itself matters: note whether Windows reports a missing DLL, an application error, an access-denied message, a crash at launch or a recurring startup prompt.
Common, non-malware causes
- Incomplete or damaged installation: the executable may be present while
libmedusa.dll, ADB components or configuration files are missing. A failed installer or interrupted disk operation can leave a shortcut that still points to the old path. - Wrong location or moved files: shortcuts and startup entries can continue pointing to a path that no longer exists. Check the shortcut’s target rather than creating a replacement that launches an unverified copy.
- Permissions: phone flashing may require elevated rights or access to a USB device. Running an unknown executable as administrator is unsafe, so verify it first and use the least privilege that performs the intended task.
- Device-driver conflicts: a phone may not be detected because its USB or ADB driver is absent, incompatible or corrupted. Disconnect the handset while investigating an untrusted executable; do not install random driver packages to silence an error.
- Windows component corruption: failed updates or unrelated damage can produce system DLL errors that affect many programs. If several applications fail, the problem may be broader than Medusa Box Flasher.
- Unwanted persistence: a copy in Startup, a scheduled task or another unexplained location can relaunch after deletion. Repeatedly deleting the visible file without removing the launch point will not solve the underlying problem.
A practical error-triage sequence
- Capture the complete message, named DLL, exception code and path before clicking through it.
- Check whether the failure occurs only when a phone is connected. If so, inspect the trusted driver and cable setup separately from the executable’s safety.
- Check the executable’s path and signature again. If it is outside the expected directory or was not intentionally installed, stop troubleshooting it as a normal application and scan it.
- If the installation is legitimate but incomplete, uninstall it through Windows and obtain a fresh installer from the source originally trusted. Do not download individual DLLs from random websites.
- If Windows components appear damaged after the file is handled, run DISM followed by SFC as described below.
Capture the exact error before changing files
Photograph or copy the complete dialog text, including any named DLL, exception code or path. Open Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application and inspect an entry created at the crash time. This information helps distinguish a broken phone utility from a broader Windows problem and prevents deleting the wrong component. Keep the timestamp so it can be compared with Defender detections and installation events.

How do I remove an unwanted medusaflasher.exe installation?
Remove the program through Windows first, then scan. Do not begin by deleting random DLLs from System32 or other shared folders. Removing a single executable can leave an uninstaller record, shortcuts, drivers or startup entries behind, and deleting a shared component can break unrelated applications.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Medusa Box Flasher (the displayed name may differ from the executable filename), select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstall wizard. If Windows offers Repair or Reset instead, use those only when you intentionally need the application and have already verified its legitimacy.
- Restart Windows. Check whether the executable, shortcut or startup entry remains. Do not delete a file that belongs to another trusted program without confirming its path and owner.
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection, update security intelligence and run a Full scan.
If the application is not listed, or uninstall fails, keep the file quarantined if Defender has detected it. For an intentionally installed but damaged utility, obtain a fresh installer from the source you originally trusted rather than downloading an unknown replacement. If the file reappears, investigate startup entries, scheduled tasks and other persistence mechanisms with your administrator or security team instead of repeatedly deleting the executable.

Before removing a legitimate phone-servicing tool, disconnect any phone and save work in other applications. If the computer belongs to an organization, document the removal and let the administrator decide whether related drivers should also be removed. Do not disable security software or add an exclusion to make the uninstaller run.
What should I do if the file persists after a scan?
Run Microsoft Defender Offline when unwanted software survives normal cleanup. In Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, select Microsoft Defender Offline scan and choose Scan now. Save work first: Windows restarts into the Windows Recovery Environment and scans before normal Windows loads. Microsoft explains that this occurs “after a restart, without loading Windows, so any persistent malware has a more difficult time hiding or defending itself.”

How do I repair Windows components after cleanup?
Use these commands only after handling the suspicious file. They repair Windows components; they do not prove that a third-party executable is legitimate.
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it and choose Run as administrator. - Run the Deployment Image Servicing and Management command and wait for it to complete:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- When DISM finishes, run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the application or the original Windows function again.
Microsoft’s order is important: DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses, then SFC checks protected system files and reports whether corruption was repaired. If SFC reports that it could not fix some files, retain the exact result and seek Windows repair guidance rather than substituting DLLs from download sites. A successful SFC result does not change the hash, origin or safety status of MedusaFlasher.exe.
What if I see .MEDUSA files or a ransom note?
Treat file encryption, .MEDUSA extensions, a !!!READ_ME_MEDUSA!!!.txt note, stopped security or backup services, or deleted shadow copies as a possible ransomware incident—not as an ordinary MedusaFlasher.exe crash.

Microsoft advises against paying a ransom because payment does not guarantee recovery. A ransomware response is separate from repairing a damaged phone-flashing installation. Do not assume that removing one file restores a compromised environment; other persistence, stolen credentials or affected devices may need investigation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which evidence should I keep for support?
Save the full path, file size, hash, signature status, installer source, Defender detection name, Event Viewer entry, screenshots of errors and the exact commands’ output. Do not email the executable casually or rename it before your security team has recorded the original details. This evidence allows responders to distinguish the known utility from an impersonating file and to determine whether Windows corruption remains after removal.
For a suspected ransomware event, also preserve a sample ransom note, a list of affected extensions, the time encryption began, disconnected systems and the location of clean backups. Keep the original timestamps where possible. Clear, chronological notes reduce the chance that a well-intentioned cleanup action destroys evidence needed to identify the intrusion.

Can I delete medusaflasher.exe manually?
Manual deletion can leave shortcuts, uninstall records, DLLs or startup entries behind, and it may damage an intentional phone-servicing installation. Prefer the Windows uninstall path, then quarantine or remove the file only after recording its path and scan result.
Does a 0/68 antivirus result prove the file is clean?
No. That figure belongs to one 57.7 MB installer record, not every executable with the same name. Scanner coverage changes, and a different hash is a different sample, so current local scanning and provenance still matter.
What does the 8 MB ThreatInfo sample tell me?
It identifies one file with MD5 2f8636e12a4bb88de99d7be6e222e19d that ThreatInfo labeled “General Threat.” Unless your file has that exact hash, the record cannot be treated as a verdict about your copy.

Should a legitimate copy always be in C:Program FilesGsmServerMedusa?
That directory is the location listed for one Medusa Box Flasher installation and is useful context, not an authenticity requirement. A different path deserves extra scrutiny, while a matching path still requires a signature and current Defender scan.
Can Windows repair commands remove malware?
DISM and SFC repair Windows component files; they are not malware-removal tools and do not authenticate third-party programs. Scan and quarantine suspicious files first, then use the commands for any remaining operating-system corruption.
Why does the program fail only when my phone is connected?
A missing, incompatible or corrupted USB or ADB driver can prevent detection, and permissions can also matter. Disconnect the device while verifying the executable, then troubleshoot trusted drivers separately; do not install random driver packages.
What should I do before reinstalling Windows after a Medusa incident?
Disconnect affected systems, preserve ransom notes and logs, and verify which backups predate the incident. A qualified responder should help determine whether backups and other devices are clean before a rebuild or restoration.
Is a missing digital signature proof of malware?
No. It increases uncertainty, but an unsigned file can still be a legitimate older utility. Combine signature status with path, provenance, exact hash, current Defender results and observed behavior.

What if MedusaFlasher.exe keeps coming back after uninstall?
Do not keep deleting it blindly. Run a full scan and, if it persists, Microsoft Defender Offline. Record the recreation time and investigate Startup entries, scheduled tasks and other persistence with an administrator or security professional.
The Bottom Line
MedusaFlasher.exe is associated with Medusa Box Flasher, but the filename is not a safety certificate. Verify the exact path, provenance, signature, hash and Microsoft Defender result before using or removing it. Uninstall unwanted copies through Windows, run a full or Offline scan when needed, and use DISM followed by SFC only for remaining Windows corruption. If .MEDUSA extensions, ransom notes or disabled security services appear, disconnect the computer and treat the event as ransomware.
