midori.exe is the Windows executable used by Midori Browser, a privacy-oriented browser project built on the Firefox-derived Gecko engine. The name alone does not prove that a file is legitimate or malicious. Check where the file came from, its complete path, publisher signature, hash and current security results before opening it. A normal installed sample has appeared at C:Program Filesmidoribinmidori.exe; an official build can instead place the executable under engineobj-*distbinmidori.exe. If Windows reports an error, document the exact message first, scan an unexpected copy, remove an untrusted or damaged installation, and reinstall from Midori’s official release channel. Do not disable Defender or add a broad exclusion just to make the program start.
What is midori.exe?
midori.exe is the executable file that starts the Windows desktop build of Midori Browser. The upstream Midori Browser repository describes the project as a privacy-oriented browser for Linux, macOS and Windows, using the Firefox-derived Gecko engine. Windows developers building the project are told to look for the output at engine/obj-*/dist/bin/midori.exe. That is a build-output location, not a guarantee about where an end user’s installed copy will be stored.

File size and location can differ between releases, packaging methods and builds, so neither value is a universal fingerprint. Midori’s release page listed version 11.9.1 as the latest release at the time it was checked, but that page is dynamic and does not identify the version of every file already installed on a Windows computer.
Is midori.exe safe?
A legitimate copy can be safe, but safety is file-specific. A file obtained through Midori’s official release channel, stored in a normal program directory, carrying an expected publisher signature and passing current scans is more consistent with a genuine installation. An unexpected copy in a temporary folder, a randomly named user directory, an unsigned binary or a file delivered inside an unrelated software bundle deserves investigation. These are risk indicators, not proof by themselves.

Use several signals instead of the filename
| Check | More consistent with a legitimate installation | Why it needs scrutiny |
|---|---|---|
| Provenance | Downloaded from Midori’s official website or release channel, or built from the documented upstream project | Arrived in a third-party bundle, an unsolicited download or an unknown archive |
| Location | A Midori program directory such as C:Program Filesmidoribinmidori.exe, or a developer’s documented build directory |
Temporary, random, hidden or unrelated user-data folders |
| Publisher and signature | An intact signature with a publisher that matches the software source, when a signature is present | No signature, an invalid signature or a publisher that cannot be connected to Midori |
| Security response | No current detection after updating security intelligence and scanning the exact file | Repeated detections, quarantine events or behavior that continues after removal |
| Integrity | A hash that matches a trusted release record or a file you built yourself | A hash that cannot be traced to a trusted download or changes between scans |
Microsoft describes potentially unwanted apps (PUAs) as software that is not necessarily malware but may display unwanted advertising, secretly use system resources, offer unexpected applications or behave in other unwanted ways. Microsoft’s Windows Support guidance also states that “Malware is malicious software.” A PUA warning and a malware verdict are therefore not interchangeable; read the exact detection name and action in Windows Security.
Why is Windows Defender detecting midori.exe?
Microsoft Defender’s real-time protection scans files and programs as they are accessed or executed. A detection can reflect a malicious or unwanted file, a damaged or altered download, a bundled installer, or a false positive. The executable name is not enough to distinguish these cases.
Published sample records demonstrate why scan results must be tied to a hash. One herdProtect record from 2026 reported 1 of 68 engines detecting SHA-1 b09a878acec69d57b509b8e04006cfd020997b31, called the result a probable false positive, and listed a 133.7 KB Win32 file at C:Program Filesmidoribinmidori.exe. A different record reported 0 of 68 engines for SHA-1 1469e1871dad71f308f6ea795c15b4de95feaa81. Those results concern two specific hashes; they do not certify every file named midori.exe, and a clean result does not prove that a newly downloaded copy is safe.
Before deciding to allow a detection, open Windows Security and inspect the detection name, affected file and action. If the file is unknown, leave it quarantined while you investigate. Microsoft recommends keeping security intelligence current, downloading apps from trusted sources and using Microsoft Defender Offline when unwanted software persists.

Where should midori.exe be located?
There is no single path that applies to every Midori installation. The upstream build documentation uses engine/obj-*/dist/bin/midori.exe for a compiled build. The sample installed path C:Program Filesmidoribinmidori.exe is a plausible location for a packaged installation. A copy elsewhere is not automatically malware: portable builds, per-user installs and developer workspaces can use different directories. The question is whether you can explain the path and connect it to a trusted source.
How to inspect the path
- In Task Manager, right-click a running Midori process and choose Open file location. If the process is not running, search for
midori.exein File Explorer and note every copy. - Right-click the file, choose Properties, and record the General tab’s location, size and dates. Check Details for product and version information, then check Digital Signatures if that tab exists.
- Compare the path with how you obtained Midori. A file under a known Midori folder or your own build tree is easier to explain than one created in a temporary directory by an unrelated installer.
How do I verify midori.exe safely before running it?
Verification should happen before execution when the source or path is uncertain. Keep the suspicious copy available for inspection, but do not double-click it or approve a Defender prompt merely to test whether it opens.
- Capture the evidence. Write down the exact error or detection text, the full path, file size, creation and modification dates, listed publisher and any signature status. If several copies exist, treat each copy separately.
- Calculate a hash. In PowerShell, run
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 -LiteralPath 'C:pathtomidori.exe'and save the resulting SHA-256 value. SHA-1 values in public records can help distinguish samples, but a hash is useful only when compared with a trusted release or build record. - Update protection. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates and select Check for updates. Then run a scan of the file or a full scan rather than relying on an old result.
- Review the verdict. Go to Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. Expand the event to see whether Defender quarantined, removed or merely blocked the file. Do not restore it unless you have verified the software and publisher.
- Use an offline scan when needed. If an unwanted copy returns, or Windows Security cannot remove it while Windows is running, choose Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save work first; the computer restarts and scans before the normal desktop loads.
Do not submit a file to an online scanner or share it publicly if it contains private data or came from a confidential build. A scan service can provide additional opinions, but its verdict still applies to the exact hash and can change as engines update.
How do I fix midori.exe errors on Windows?
Start with the least destructive path: identify the file, rule out an unwanted copy, then repair the installation. The same filename can produce different errors when the cause is a blocked download, missing component, damaged installation, permissions problem or a genuine crash.

1. Record the exact failure
Copy the complete message rather than paraphrasing it. Note whether Midori fails at launch, closes after opening, crashes on a particular page, or is stopped by Windows Security. Record the path of the executable that generated the message; multiple copies can make a repair appear ineffective when Windows is launching a different one.
2. Triage an unexpected or detected file
If the source, path or publisher is unexplained, do not run the file. Update Defender, perform a full scan and check Protection history. Leave the item quarantined or remove it when Windows identifies it as unwanted or malicious. If the detection persists after a normal scan, run Microsoft Defender Offline rather than repeatedly launching the executable.
3. Remove a broken or untrusted installation
For a Midori installation you no longer trust or that is clearly damaged, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (called Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds), select Midori and choose Uninstall. If Midori is not listed, remove only files you have positively identified as belonging to that installation after scanning; do not delete a random executable from a shared or system directory.
4. Reinstall from the official channel
Obtain the current Windows installer from Midori’s official website or release channel, not from a repackaged bundle. Close other Midori processes, install with an account that has the required permissions, and note the new installation path. After installation, check the new file’s Properties and scan it before restoring old extensions or profiles.

5. Check ordinary Windows causes
- Install pending Windows updates and restart.
- Confirm that the system drive has free space for the browser, its profile and temporary files.
- Try launching from the installed shortcut or the newly verified path, not an obsolete shortcut pointing to a deleted copy.
- Check that your Windows account can read and execute the program directory and write to the profile location.
- Look in Windows Security for a block that occurred immediately after the reinstall. A newly downloaded file can be blocked even when an older copy ran previously.
Do not disable real-time protection to force the program to launch. Microsoft warns that disabling protection leaves the device vulnerable. Also avoid creating a broad Defender exclusion for an uncertain executable: an exclusion stops Defender from checking the excluded file or process and can make the system more vulnerable. If a narrowly scoped exception is ever considered by an administrator, it should follow a verified publisher and file path, not a filename alone.
6. Separate browser-profile problems from executable problems
If the verified executable opens but crashes only after a profile, extension or saved session is loaded, test with a fresh profile or temporarily move the existing profile after making a backup. This distinguishes a damaged user profile from a faulty program file. Do not copy unknown extensions or downloaded executables into the new profile until the browser is stable.

The older official Midori core documentation describes a debugger workflow for developers who can reproduce a crash. From the installed or build directory, open a debugger and use commands such as file midori.exe, run and bt to load the executable, reproduce the failure and print a backtrace. This is appropriate for diagnosing a software crash or build problem; it is not a first-line malware-removal procedure.
A useful crash report includes the exact Midori build, Windows edition, reproduction steps, the executable path, recent changes and the debugger backtrace. Remove personal URLs, profile data and tokens before sharing logs. If the crash disappears after reinstalling from the official channel, preserve the old hash and error text rather than assuming every future copy will behave identically.

What should you do when the file is quarantined?
Keep the quarantine action in place while you establish provenance. In Protection history, record the detection name and affected path, then scan the replacement installer before installation. Restore a file only when you have verified its source, signature and hash and understand why Defender flagged it; otherwise remove it and reinstall from an official source.
If the file is trusted but Windows still has general repair issues after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut that can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, while also offering settings tweaks, temporary-file cleanup and an app-crash log. It complements antivirus protection rather than replacing it; it runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, offers a free trial of at least two days by category and then requires a subscription, and results vary—no tool repairs every crash.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat are the key checks to remember?
- The filename identifies the program role, not the trust level.
- Compare provenance, complete path, signature, hash and current scan results together.
- Two public scan records for different hashes produced different results, so never generalize one verdict to every
midori.exe. - Use full and, when necessary, Offline scans for unwanted software; quarantine or remove files you cannot verify.
- Reinstall from Midori’s official channel after recording the error, and never weaken Defender simply to bypass a block.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I delete midori.exe manually?
Delete it manually only after you have confirmed which installation it belongs to and completed a security check. Uninstalling Midori through Windows Settings is safer because it can remove the registered application while leaving unrelated files alone; preserve the suspicious file’s path and hash if you may need to investigate it.
Does a 0-of-68 scan result prove that midori.exe is safe?
No. A 0-of-68 result describes one hash at one point in time and cannot validate another build, modified copy or later threat. Provenance, signature, path and current Defender results still matter.
Why is midori.exe in AppData instead of Program Files?
A per-user, portable or developer installation can legitimately use an AppData or workspace path, so the directory alone is not a verdict. Check who created the file, how Midori was installed, whether the signature is valid and whether the hash belongs to a trusted build; an unexplained random folder should remain untrusted until those checks agree.
Will updating Midori automatically fix every midori.exe crash?
No. Updating can replace a damaged executable, but crashes caused by a profile, extension, permissions, low disk space or a security block can remain. Keep the original error details and test a clean profile so you know which part changed.
