Minecraft Launcher is the official Windows app for installing, updating, and starting Minecraft. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, it provides one place to access both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, manage installations and profiles, use snapshots and Quick Play, change language and accessibility settings, and manage Java skins.
You can download it from the official Minecraft download page or install it through the Microsoft Store. The launcher itself is free to install, but you still need the correct Minecraft license and must sign in with the Microsoft account that owns it.

What is Minecraft Launcher?
Minecraft Launcher is the official PC hub for Minecraft. It downloads the game files you need, keeps supported game versions updated, and lets you launch the Minecraft edition and installation you want to play.
The current PC product is Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition. A separate launcher is not required for the two editions: the unified Minecraft Launcher lets eligible players switch between Java Edition and Bedrock Edition from the same app. More information about the current PC editions is available on Minecraft’s official editions page.

What the launcher can do
- Install and start Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition.
- Download game updates and supported versions.
- Access Java snapshots and other available installations.
- Manage profiles and installations.
- Use Quick Play where supported.
- Change language and accessibility settings.
- Manage Java Edition skins.
- Provide access to multiplayer features, including servers where supported by the edition and account.
The launcher is not the same thing as Minecraft ownership. Installing the app does not automatically grant access to paid game content.
Windows 10 and 11 requirements
The current official download category is Windows 10/11, and the launcher requires Windows 10 or higher. Windows 7 and Windows 8 do not meet the current minimum requirement for launcher updates. Check the official launcher minimum requirements if you are using an older Windows installation.
How to download Minecraft Launcher on Windows 11 or 10
There are two official installation methods. You can use the Microsoft Store or download the launcher from Minecraft’s website.
Method 1: Install through the Microsoft Store
- Open the Microsoft Store in Windows.
- Search for and open the official Minecraft Launcher listing.
- Choose your Minecraft edition if the Store asks you to do so.
- Select Get or Install.
- Open Minecraft Launcher after the installation finishes.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft.
The exact button can vary between Get and Install depending on your Windows version and which editions are associated with your account. Minecraft’s official instructions are in its download and installation guide.

Method 2: Download it from the Minecraft website
- Open the official Minecraft download page.
- Select Download or Download Launcher.
- Run the downloaded installer and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Open Minecraft Launcher when installation is complete.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game.
The launcher is therefore not limited to the Microsoft Store. The official download page supports both the Store installation and the website’s Download Launcher option.
Do you need to buy Minecraft separately?
Yes, unless Minecraft is already attached to the Microsoft account you are using. The launcher is the access and installation app; it is not proof that the game license belongs to you.

That account must own the relevant Minecraft license. If you install the launcher but sign in with a different account, the game may appear unavailable even though you purchased it previously.

How to switch between Java and Bedrock Edition
- Open Minecraft Launcher.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft.
- Use the edition selector in the launcher to choose Java Edition or Bedrock Edition for Windows.
- Select Play to install or start the selected edition.
Java and Bedrock remain different game editions with different features and compatibility. The benefit of the unified launcher is that both PC editions are managed from one application, not that their game systems become identical.
How to update Minecraft Launcher
To check the launcher’s version and available updates, open Minecraft Launcher and go to Settings > About. If the launcher is installed through the Microsoft Store, Store updates may also be involved.
Keep the launcher updated when possible because Minecraft uses associated Microsoft and Xbox services for sign-in, installation, and game updates.

“This App Can’t Open,” crashes, or freezes
Windows users may encounter a launcher that crashes, freezes, fails to open, or displays “This App Can’t Open.” Microsoft Store problems, damaged app data, missing dependencies, and update failures can all interfere with the launcher.

- Repair the Minecraft Launcher app from Windows app settings if the repair option is available.
- Reinstall the launcher from the Microsoft Store.
- Reset the Microsoft Store cache if the Store or launcher is not opening correctly.
- Run the Gaming Services Repair Tool for update-related problems.
The Microsoft Store is a dependency for the Windows launcher, so a corrupted Store cache can prevent the launcher from opening or installing correctly. See Minecraft’s official crash and freeze troubleshooting guide for the current sequence.
Game updates fail
Minecraft identifies the Gaming Services Repair Tool as a remedy for launcher or game-update problems because Minecraft uses Xbox services to deliver game updates. Use it when the launcher opens but an edition will not download, update, or start.
Error 0x803F8001 or missing game access
Error 0x803F8001 is commonly associated with an incorrect Microsoft account or inconsistent sign-ins. Confirm that the same account is signed in to Minecraft Launcher, the Microsoft Store, and the Xbox app. Then verify that this account owns Minecraft.

Reinstalling can resolve damaged launcher files, but back up your worlds first. Minecraft’s support instructions specifically recommend backing up worlds before uninstalling the launcher because uninstalling can affect access to local game data, even though the launcher and game licenses are separate.
After backing up your worlds, remove and reinstall the launcher through the Microsoft Store or the official Minecraft download page. Sign in again with the licensed Microsoft account after installation.
Is there a command to download Minecraft Launcher?
No command-line command is required by the current official Windows procedure. Microsoft’s Store method uses Get or Install, while the website method uses Download or Download Launcher. For most Windows 10 and Windows 11 users, these graphical installation paths are the supported and simplest options.
