mlm.exe (shown as MLM.exe in MathWorks documentation) is normally the vendor-daemon program used by a MATLAB network license manager. It is legitimate when its path and license configuration belong to a MATLAB installation you recognize, but the filename alone does not prove that it is safe. On Windows, the reliable fixes are to verify the installation, check the license-server status, correct an unquoted path containing spaces, restart the manager, or update its matching binaries. If the file has no trusted MATLAB context, treat it as potentially unwanted software and use Windows security tools before deleting it.

What does mlm.exe do?

MathWorks uses MLM.exe as the vendor daemon for its network license manager. A network license server uses a license file containing encrypted product passcodes; the manager grants or denies MATLAB product access according to the available license keys. The license file’s DAEMON line names the vendor daemon and points to its executable.

In other words, MLM.exe is one part of a license-server installation, not the MATLAB desktop application itself and not a Windows component. Client computers contact the license manager when they need an available MATLAB or toolbox license. The daemon helps the manager enforce the entitlements described by the license file.

A current Windows example from MathWorks is:

DAEMON MLM "C:Program FilesMATLABR2026betcwin64MLM.exe" options="C:Program FilesMATLABR2026betcmlm.opt"

The release folder will differ on your computer. Use the path for the MATLAB release actually installed on the license server, not a path copied from an older example. The quoted path identifies the executable; the options value points to the related options file. Both values should belong to the same license-manager installation.

mlm.exe is not a standard Windows component and is not required by Windows itself. It normally appears because MATLAB network licensing was installed, often for several client machines or for an organization that wants a central license server. A service can remain running even when nobody is actively using MATLAB, because clients may need to request a license later.

Is mlm.exe safe?

Safety depends on context. A copy whose full path, license file and running service match a MATLAB network-license installation is consistent with the legitimate MathWorks daemon. A file with the same name in an unrelated folder, with no known MATLAB installation or with an unexplained publisher, needs investigation. Do not approve or delete it solely because the name looks familiar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
What you find What it suggests Appropriate response
The DAEMON MLM entry points into the installed MATLAB directory, such as <matlabroot>etcwin64. Expected network-license daemon. Check the license-file syntax and server status with LMTOOLS or lmutil.
The file is outside a known MATLAB installation or there is no matching license-server service. Unexplained or potentially unwanted software. Uninstall software you do not recognize and run Microsoft Defender scans before removing the file.
Security software flags it, or the publisher and installation source cannot be established. Do not assume the filename is authentic. Use a full scan and, if the problem persists, Microsoft Defender Offline; obtain replacement software only from a trusted source.

Official sources do not publish a dependable prevalence or failure-rate statistic for files named mlm.exe. The practical test is the complete path and license context, followed by a security scan when that context is missing. A legitimate path does not make every copy of the file safe, and an unfamiliar path does not by itself prove malware; it means you need to establish what installed it.

How can I verify which mlm.exe Windows is using?

  1. Open the MATLAB license file used by the server, commonly named license.dat. Confirm that its DAEMON MLM line points to the executable you found.
  2. Check the folder shown in that line. A normal Windows installation commonly places the daemon under <matlabroot>etcwin64; the exact release and root directory vary.
  3. Compare the path with the MATLAB network-license installation your organization or household intentionally installed. A path under a different product, a temporary download directory or an unrelated user profile needs an explanation before you trust it.
  4. Confirm that the related MATLAB license-manager installation is one your organization or household intentionally installed. If you cannot connect the file to a known installation, stop treating it as trusted and follow the security procedure later in this article.
  5. Keep the license file and the executable together with the rest of the license-manager installation when repairing it. Do not download a random copy of mlm.exe from a file-sharing site.

The license file is the authoritative link between the running manager and the executable. If several MATLAB releases or license servers are installed, make sure you inspect the file used by the active service rather than an unused example file. A path that looks correct in one file does not tell you what another service is launching.

What is the DAEMON line, and why does its syntax matter?

MathWorks states that “The DAEMON line identifies the name of the network license manager daemon.” The first token after DAEMON is the vendor name, MLM; the next value is the path to the daemon executable. An optional options setting identifies the options file used by the installation.

Windows paths frequently contain spaces, especially under C:Program Files. In that situation, the complete executable path must be enclosed in double quotation marks. Without the quotes, the license manager can parse only part of the path and report that the file cannot be found even though the file exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not change other license lines casually. Make a backup first, edit only the path that needs correction, and then restart the manager so it rereads the file. A syntactically correct line that points to the wrong release or architecture will still fail.

How do I check whether the MLM daemon is running?

On Windows, MathWorks documents both a graphical LMTOOLS check and a command-line check. Use the license file belonging to this installation; guessing a path can produce a misleading failure.

Check with LMTOOLS

  1. Open lmtools.exe from <matlabroot>etc<arch>. On a typical 64-bit Windows installation, the architecture folder is win64.
  2. Select the Server Status tab.
  3. Choose Perform Status Enquiry.
  4. Read the result. A healthy listing reports the license server as up and shows MLM: UP for the vendor daemon.

If the server is reported as up but MLM is down, the manager process and the vendor daemon are not in the same healthy state. Recheck the DAEMON path, the selected license file and the service configuration before changing anything else.

Check from a command prompt

Run the equivalent command from the license-manager directory, replacing the path with the actual license file:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
lmutil.exe lmstat -a -c "C:Program FilesMATLABR2026betclicense.dat"

The status output helps separate a daemon problem from a MATLAB client or license-allocation problem. If the command reports that the server or vendor daemon is down, continue with the restart and configuration checks below. If it reports MLM: UP, the executable is being found and started; an application that still cannot obtain a license may be using a different license file or may be out of available keys.

How do I fix an mlm.exe “file not found” error?

The most specific MathWorks diagnosis is an unquoted Windows path containing spaces, especially a path under Program Files. Windows then parses part of the path as a separate argument instead of locating the executable.

  1. Stop the license manager before editing its configuration. Use LMTOOLS, the Windows service, or the documented lmdown command.
  2. Make a backup copy of license.dat so you can restore the previous configuration if necessary.
  3. Open the active license file in a text editor with appropriate administrative access.
  4. Find the DAEMON MLM line. Put double quotation marks around the complete path to MLM.exe, including the drive letter and every folder name. For example:
    DAEMON MLM "C:Program FilesMATLABR2026betcwin64MLM.exe"
  5. Do not copy the old release name from a support example. Replace it with the real path shown by your installed MATLAB release.
  6. Save the file, then stop and restart the license manager.
  7. Run a status enquiry again and confirm that the server is up and the vendor line reports MLM: UP.

If the error remains, verify that the quoted file actually exists at that exact location and that you edited the license file used by the running service. A correctly quoted but incorrect path still produces a missing-file error. Also check for a misspelled drive letter, release directory or architecture folder; the path must match the installed files exactly.

How do I stop and restart the MATLAB license manager?

MathWorks lists three supported approaches. Choose one method and use the same license file that the service is configured to use. Stop the manager before replacing binaries or editing a DAEMON line.

LMTOOLS

Open LMTOOLS, select the Start/Stop/Reread tab, stop the manager, wait for the stop operation to complete, and then start it again. Use the status enquiry afterward to verify the result. A reread operation may reload licensing information, but after a path or executable change, a complete stop and start is the safer documented sequence.

Windows Services

Open the Windows Services management console and locate the service normally named MATLAB License Server. Stop it, then start it again. If more than one similarly named service exists, check its configured executable and license-file paths before acting. Restarting the wrong service will not repair the instance that MATLAB clients are using.

Command line

To stop a running manager, use lmutil.exe lmdown -c <licenseFile>, replacing the angle-bracketed value with the complete path to the active license file. To launch the manager directly, MathWorks documents the pattern:

lmgrd.exe -c <licenseFile> -l <logFile>

Replace both values with real paths. Keep the log file in a location administrators can monitor and use the same configuration that the service normally uses. Do not expose lmgrd.exe or the license-manager port directly to the internet or an untrusted network; a network license server should be reachable only by the clients and administrators who need it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I update a broken or outdated license-manager installation?

Updating the matching license-manager package is safer than copying an isolated executable. MathWorks’ current workflow is:

  1. Download the license-manager package for the server platform from MathWorks.
  2. Confirm that the package matches the Windows architecture and the installation you administer.
  3. Stop the existing manager using LMTOOLS, the Windows service, or the command line.
  4. In the architecture folder, replace the license-manager binaries supplied by that package: MLM, lmgrd, and lmutil. On Windows, replace lmtools as well.
  5. Start the manager again with the existing license file and log-file configuration.
  6. Use LMTOOLS Server Status or lmutil.exe lmstat to confirm that the server is up and MLM: UP appears.

Keep a backup of the previous binaries and configuration until the updated service has been verified. If the new package is for a different platform or architecture, it will not be an appropriate replacement for a Windows installation. Do not combine a newly downloaded MLM with unrelated versions of lmgrd, lmutil or lmtools; replacing the supplied group together avoids compatibility problems.

What should I do if mlm.exe is suspicious or security software flags it?

When the file is not tied to a trusted MATLAB network-license installation, handle it as unwanted software rather than trying to repair it as a license problem.

  1. Disconnect the machine from any untrusted network resources while you investigate, especially if the process is listening on an unexpected port.
  2. Record the full path and identify any associated application or service before removing anything. This prevents you from deleting the active MATLAB daemon by mistake.
  3. Use Windows Settings to uninstall software you do not recognize or no longer need. Removing the parent application is preferable to deleting one executable while leaving its service and files behind.
  4. Update Windows and Microsoft Defender, then run a full scan.
  5. If unwanted software persists or the scan cannot complete normally, run Microsoft Defender Offline and follow the results it reports.
  6. Only after the scan and uninstall steps should you remove a leftover file, and only when you have confirmed that no MATLAB network license depends on it.

Microsoft defines malware as malicious software and recommends obtaining software from trusted sources, keeping security software and Windows updated, uninstalling software you do not need, and using a full or offline Defender scan when necessary. Those steps complement, rather than replace, the path and license checks above. If Defender quarantines a file that your organization confirms is required, obtain a clean, matching license-manager package from MathWorks instead of restoring an arbitrary copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I delete mlm.exe?

Do not delete it merely because it appears in Task Manager or because an error mentions it. If a MATLAB network license server uses that executable, deleting it can stop clients from obtaining licensed products. First identify the active DAEMON MLM entry and confirm the service status.

Deletion is reasonable only after you have established that the file belongs to software you intentionally removed, or after Microsoft Defender and the uninstall process have identified it as unwanted. If the legitimate file is damaged, replace the complete, matching license-manager package instead of deleting the daemon and leaving the license configuration incomplete. Preserve the license file until you know the server is no longer needed.

Which fix should I try first?

  • Known MATLAB server, daemon down: run LMTOOLS status, then stop and restart the manager.
  • “File not found” and a path under Program Files: quote the full MLM.exe path in license.dat, restart, and recheck status.
  • Server is up but MLM is down: verify the DAEMON path, the selected license file and the matching installation, then restart.
  • Old or mismatched binaries: update the complete license-manager package and replace the listed binaries together.
  • Unknown path or no MATLAB context: uninstall unneeded software and run full and offline Defender scans.
  • Unsure whether MATLAB depends on it: do not delete it; identify the license file and service first.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address some common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, provide an app-crash log and offer other maintenance features. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, includes a free trial by category of at least two days and then requires a subscription. Results vary, it does not repair every crash, and it complements an antivirus rather than replacing one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is a legitimate MLM.exe usually installed?

The location depends on the MATLAB release and server architecture. MathWorks’ Windows example places it below the installation root in etcwin64; the authoritative location is the path on your active DAEMON MLM line.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I copy MLM.exe from another MATLAB computer?

Do not mix an arbitrary executable with a different license-manager installation. Use the license-manager package for the server platform and replace the related binaries together so the daemon, manager and tools remain compatible.

What does the license.dat file contain?

MathWorks describes license files as containing encrypted product passcodes that the manager uses to grant or deny access. Keep a backup before editing, and do not publish the file or its contents.

Why does Windows show mlm.exe even when nobody is using MATLAB?

A network license manager can remain running as a Windows service so client computers can request licenses when needed. Its presence alone does not prove a failure; check the configured service, license file and LMTOOLS status.

What does “MLM: UP” mean?

It means the status enquiry can see the MLM vendor daemon running for the selected license server. If MATLAB still cannot obtain a license, verify that the client and service are using the same license file and that an appropriate key is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is an mlm.exe file under Program Files automatically safe?

No. Program Files is a plausible location for a MATLAB installation, but the complete path must match the active DAEMON MLM line and a known license-manager service. Run Defender if the publisher or installation source is unexplained.

Why does quoting the path fix a file-not-found error?

A Windows path containing spaces can be split into separate arguments when it is not enclosed in quotation marks. Quoting the entire executable path lets the license manager locate the intended MLM.exe; you must still use the correct release and architecture path.

Should I edit license.dat while the manager is running?

Stop the manager first, make a backup, edit the active file, and then stop and restart the manager. Otherwise the running service may continue using the old configuration or overwrite your assumptions about which file is active.

How do I replace a damaged MLM.exe safely?

Download the license-manager package for the server platform from MathWorks, stop the service, replace MLM together with lmgrd, lmutil and Windows lmtools, restart, and confirm MLM: UP with LMTOOLS or lmutil.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can the license manager be exposed to the internet?

No. MathWorks warns against exposing the license-manager binary or service to the internet or an untrusted network. Restrict access to the clients and administrators who need the network license.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: mlm.exe is usually MathWorks’ MATLAB network-license vendor daemon, not a Windows system file. Verify the full path and active DAEMON MLM entry, check for MLM: UP, quote paths containing spaces, and restart or update the complete license-manager package when necessary. If no trusted MATLAB context exists, uninstall the unknown software and run full and offline Microsoft Defender scans before deleting anything.
