monaco.exe is not one uniquely defined Windows component. The name can refer to Dynatrace’s legitimate Monaco command-line tool, an executable shipped by unrelated software, or a suspicious file that merely borrowed the name. The Monaco Editor associated with Visual Studio Code is a browser-based JavaScript library, not proof that a Windows process called monaco.exe belongs to Microsoft.
Whether a particular file is safe depends on its complete path, owning application, publisher signature, hash, and installation source. Locate the file, verify its signature, scan it before running or replacing it, and remove only the application that owns it. The steps below cover identification, malware checks, crashes, installation failures, browser-worker errors, and Windows-version compatibility.

What exactly is monaco.exe?
The filename is ambiguous. Windows uses executable names as labels, not as unique identities, so different vendors can distribute files with the same basename. You must identify the program behind the file before deciding that it is safe, broken, or removable.
Monaco Editor is a browser library
Microsoft describes the Monaco Editor as “the code editor that powers VS Code.” It is generated from Visual Studio Code sources and is normally used as JavaScript running in a browser or in an application’s embedded web view. It is installed and loaded as a library, commonly through JavaScript package tooling; that fact does not authenticate a Windows process named monaco.exe.

Dynatrace distributes a real Windows executable
Dynatrace provides a configuration-as-code command-line utility whose Windows downloads are named monaco-windows-amd64.exe or monaco-windows-386.exe. Users may rename a download to monaco.exe. Dynatrace states that its Windows executable is signed by Dynatrace, so a file used by an intentional Dynatrace installation should be checked for that publisher signature.
Other applications can reuse the name
A third-party uninstall record, for example, lists Monaco.exe as the main executable for Softing Diagnostic Tool Set 8. That does not establish that every file with the same name belongs to Softing; it demonstrates why the filename alone is not enough. A game tool, developer utility, diagnostic package, or another vendor could use the same basename.

Is monaco.exe safe?
It can be legitimate, but safety cannot be inferred from the name. A file is more likely to be authentic when it sits inside the installation directory of software you intentionally installed, carries a valid signature from that software’s publisher, and matches the vendor’s release information.
Signs that support legitimacy
- The full path is under a known application’s installation folder rather than a temporary or download directory.
- The file’s Digital Signatures tab shows a valid publisher signature. Dynatrace’s Monaco CLI should show Dynatrace as the signer.
- You can identify the application that installed it and reproduce the file from that vendor’s official installer or release package.
- The hash and version correspond to the vendor’s published release information, when the vendor provides those details.
Signs that require investigation
- The file is in
%TEMP%, an unexpected%AppData%subfolder, a downloads directory, or another location unrelated to software you recognize. - There is no valid signature, the signature is absent, or the signer does not match the application that supposedly owns the file.
- The process launches at startup even though no corresponding program appears in Installed apps, Startup settings, or a scheduled task you created.
- Microsoft Defender reports unwanted or malicious behavior, or the file returns after you remove an unknown application.
An absent signature is a reason to investigate, not automatic proof of malware. Conversely, a familiar filename is not a safety guarantee. One Triage submission named Monaco.exe was a 2.1 MB unsigned PE file with process enumeration, privilege-adjustment attempts, hooks, and network activity. Its SHA-256 was 6bc32e935a514da31e6ed5559252c36d82fd64b1e6403748b0ba86598ef20071; the analysis was submitted on 2026-06-13 and received an observed score of 6/10 in that behavioral run. Those observations describe that hash-specific sample only, not every monaco.exe.

How do I identify which monaco.exe is running?
Do this before deleting, replacing, or allowing the process through security software. The objective is to connect the process to its owner and preserve enough evidence to make a safe decision.
- Open the file location. In Task Manager, find the
monaco.exeprocess, right-click it, and choose Open file location. Record the complete path, filename, file size, and the application shown in the surrounding folder. - Check how it starts. In Task Manager’s Details tab, note whether the process is running under your account or another account. Check the Startup apps tab and the suspected application’s settings. A process with no identifiable parent application deserves additional scrutiny.
- Inspect the signature. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and open Digital Signatures. Select the signature, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports it as valid. For the Dynatrace CLI, the signer should be Dynatrace.
- Record a cryptographic hash. In PowerShell, run
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 "C:fullpathmonaco.exe", replacing the path with the one you recorded. Keep the result with the file’s version and source; a hash is useful for comparing the exact binary, not merely the filename. - Identify the installer. Look in Settings → Apps → Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows) for the program whose directory contains the executable. Also check the vendor’s documentation, release package, or uninstall entry.
Compare candidates by identity, not by name
| Candidate | Typical identity clue | What to verify | Safe conclusion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monaco Editor | JavaScript library loaded by a browser or application | Package and host application, not a standalone Windows signature | Its existence does not authenticate a Windows monaco.exe. |
| Dynatrace Monaco CLI | Configuration-as-code utility; Windows builds may be named monaco-windows-amd64.exe or monaco-windows-386.exe |
Expected Dynatrace directory, release source, valid Dynatrace signature, and matching hash when available | Likely legitimate when all identity checks agree. |
| Unrelated vendor software | Executable inside that product’s installation folder and uninstall record | Product publisher, installer source, signature, and version | Judge the owning application, not the basename. |
| Unknown or suspicious sample | Temporary/unexpected path, no owner, invalid signature, or security alert | Defender results, hash, persistence, and behavior | Do not run or replace it until investigated. |
How should I scan monaco.exe safely?
Scan first, especially when the file came from an unexpected download or keeps returning. Do not upload confidential binaries to public analysis services, and do not execute an unknown replacement merely to test it.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Update protection. Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection updates and check for updates. Current signatures improve the chance of detecting known unwanted software.
- Run a full scan. In Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options → Full scan. Let the scan complete and review the detection name and affected path.
- Use an offline scan for persistence. If the process starts again after removal, or Windows Security cannot clean it while Windows is running, choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Windows restarts into a separate environment to inspect files that may be protected by a running process.
- Consider the Malicious Software Removal Tool. Microsoft’s MSRT can check for and remove specific prevalent threats. It is not a replacement for continuously updated Defender protection, so use it as an additional Microsoft troubleshooting measure when unwanted software is suspected.
- Preserve evidence. Before quarantine or deletion, note the path, hash, signature result, and detection name. This prevents you from accidentally destroying the information needed to identify the owning application.
Microsoft defines malware as malicious software and recommends trusted downloads, current Defender protection, full scans, and Defender Offline when unwanted software is suspected. A scan result should be interpreted together with the file’s path and publisher; a clean result does not prove that an unknown application is desirable, and an alert on one hash does not condemn every file with the same name.
How do I fix monaco.exe crashes and startup errors?
The correct fix depends on which application owns the executable. Work through the branch that matches your evidence rather than downloading a replacement from a generic “monaco.exe” site.

If a known application crashes
- Close the application and restart Windows so a locked process is released.
- Use the application’s own update mechanism or the publisher’s official release package. Confirm that the replacement has the expected signer and path.
- If the crash began after an update, reinstall the same application from its official source. Remove the old installation through Windows Settings first when the vendor’s instructions require it; do not delete the executable alone.
- Retest with the application’s normal workflow. If the crash returns, record the Windows version, application version, path, signature result, and any Defender event so the vendor can distinguish an application defect from a tampered file.
If an unknown process keeps launching
- Disconnect the computer from networks only when necessary to contain suspicious activity, then run Defender and Defender Offline as described above.
- In Settings → Apps → Installed apps, remove the unfamiliar application that owns the file. If there is no owner, inspect Startup apps and scheduled tasks for entries you did not create.
- Restart and verify that the process and its folder are gone. Scan again after removal.
- Do not restore a quarantined file or add an exclusion simply because the filename appears in a forum post. Reinstall only from the identified publisher.
If Windows reports that the file is missing or cannot start
A missing-file message often means an application still has a shortcut, startup entry, or uninstall record pointing to a file that was removed. Reinstall the owning application from its publisher, or uninstall it cleanly if you no longer need it. Avoid copying a same-named executable from another computer, because matching names do not guarantee matching versions, dependencies, or trust.
How do I fix installation or uninstall failures involving monaco.exe?
When Windows cannot install, update, or remove the owning program, use Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter. It targets common problems such as corrupted registry data and incomplete uninstall information.
- Download the troubleshooter from Microsoft Support using a trusted browser session.
- Run it and choose whether you are having trouble installing or uninstalling a program.
- Select the application associated with
monaco.exefrom the list. If it is not listed, provide the product code when the tool offers that option. - Allow the tool to repair the detected registry or uninstall data, then restart Windows.
- Install a fresh release from the identified publisher, or confirm that the unwanted application has been removed. Recheck the file path and signature afterward.
This troubleshooter repairs installation metadata; it does not certify an executable as safe and does not remove unrelated malware. If Defender continues to detect the file, finish the security-removal process instead of repeatedly reinstalling the application.

The Monaco Editor FAQ documents a browser integration limitation: pages loaded from file:// cannot create the web workers that the editor needs. The documented remedy is to serve the editor through http:// or https://.

Apply the browser-based fix
- Stop opening the editor’s HTML file directly from a
file://address. - Run the project through a local development server or deploy it to a web server that provides an
http://orhttps://origin. - Open the resulting web address in the browser and test worker creation again.
- Keep this issue separate from a suspicious Windows executable: a browser worker error does not prove that a file named
monaco.exeexists or is malicious.
Can Windows version compatibility cause monaco.exe-related errors?
Yes, when the file is part of a VS Code-based workflow rather than the Dynatrace CLI. Microsoft identifies Visual Studio Code 1.70.3 as the last release for Windows 7 and 1.79 as the last release for Windows 8 and 8.1. Newer releases may therefore fail to run on those systems even when the downloaded files are genuine.
- On Windows 7, check whether the workflow requires a release newer than 1.70.3. If it does, the operating system is outside that release’s supported range.
- On Windows 8 or 8.1, check whether it requires a release newer than 1.79.
- Do not “fix” a compatibility error by replacing
monaco.exewith a file from another release. Use a compatible application version or move the workflow to a supported Windows version. - Windows 10 and 11 users should still verify the owning application, because operating-system support does not identify which vendor supplied a same-named executable.
Should I delete monaco.exe?
Usually, no—not by itself. Deleting a single executable can leave startup entries, registry records, dependencies, or an incomplete installation, and an unwanted program may simply recreate it.

Remove a suspicious copy
First record its path, hash, signature, and any Defender detection. Run a full scan and, when persistence is suspected, Defender Offline. Quarantine or remove the file through Windows Security, then remove the unknown owning application and scan again. If the file belongs to a work or development environment, preserve the evidence and consult the administrator before wiping it.

| What you observe | Most useful next action | Do not do this |
|---|---|---|

What information should I give a technician or software vendor?
Provide the complete path, owning application, Windows edition and version, application version, file size, signature status, SHA-256 hash, exact error text, and the time the failure occurred. Include whether Defender detected anything and whether the problem survives a clean reinstall from the publisher. This detail lets the recipient distinguish a browser-library configuration problem, an unsupported operating system, a damaged installation, and a potentially unwanted executable without asking you to distribute an unknown file.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can two different monaco.exe files be installed on the same PC?
Yes. Separate applications can legitimately ship files with the same basename, and Windows permits both when they live in different directories. Compare each file’s owner, path and signature before deciding whether either copy should be removed.
Does a valid digital signature guarantee that monaco.exe is harmless?
No. A valid signature shows that the file was signed by the named publisher and that the signature has not been invalidated, but it does not tell you whether the publisher’s software is wanted on your computer. Check the installation source, behavior and Defender results as well.
Where can I find the SHA-256 value for my copy of monaco.exe?
Open PowerShell and run Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 "C:fullpathmonaco.exe". The command reports the hash for that exact file, so include the complete path and file version when comparing it with a vendor release.
Why does my security software flag a file that the application needs?
Security detections can be caused by a damaged download, a bundled unwanted component, or behavior that resembles malware. Record the detection name and hash, obtain a clean package from the publisher, and ask the software vendor to clarify the specific file rather than adding a permanent exclusion immediately.
