mongoimport.exe is MongoDB’s command-line Database Tools utility for loading Extended JSON, CSV, or TSV data into a MongoDB deployment. It runs from Windows Command Prompt or PowerShell—not from the legacy mongo shell. The file is generally legitimate when it came from MongoDB’s official Database Tools package, sits in the expected tools directory, and has a valid Windows signature. A familiar filename alone is not proof of safety. Is mongoimport.exe safe to run?
A copy downloaded from MongoDB’s official Database Tools distribution and verified with Windows signature tools is a reasonable legitimate utility. Safety still depends on the specific file, the command you execute, the database you target, and the data you import. An unsigned or strangely located executable deserves investigation rather than an automatic “safe” verdict.
1. Confirm where the file came from
- Prefer MongoDB’s official Windows Database Tools package.
- Do not use a repacked download or an executable delivered in an unsolicited attachment.
- If another administrator supplied the file, ask for the original package and its checksum or installation record.
2. Inspect the installation location
An MSI installation normally keeps MongoDB binaries under a MongoDB program directory. A standalone Database Tools installation has its own tools directory. A different location is not conclusive proof of malware—portable deployments and administrator-chosen folders exist—but it is a reason to verify provenance and signature before running the file.
3. Check the Authenticode signature in PowerShell
Windows PowerShell can display the Authenticode status for a file. A valid signature supports the publisher and integrity checks; an unsigned result has blank signature fields and should not be treated as equivalent.

Can I delete mongoimport.exe?
You can remove it if you do not use MongoDB’s import/export tools, but deleting the executable does not uninstall MongoDB Server and can break scripts or administrative procedures that call it. First search scheduled tasks, batch files, CI jobs, and documentation for mongoimport. If the file arrived as part of an MSI installation, use Windows’ Apps settings or rerun the installer to change the selected components instead of deleting one binary by hand.
If you only want to stop a suspicious copy, record its path and signature status, disconnect it from automated jobs, and replace the complete package from the official source. A filename deletion alone does not explain how the file appeared or whether another copy remains on the system.
Why is mongoimport not recognized in Windows?
The usual cause is that the directory containing mongoimport.exe is not in the current shell’s PATH, or that a parent directory, ZIP file, or wrong version was added instead.

Choose the standalone tools package
Use the standalone Database Tools package when you need client utilities without changing the server installation. Install it into its tools directory, locate the bin folder containing mongoimport.exe, and add that folder to PATH as described above.
Choose the MSI component
Rerun the MongoDB MSI and select the ImportExportTools component if you want the import/export utilities alongside the server components. After setup completes, open a new terminal and run mongoimport --version.

These messages indicate a connectivity or deployment problem, not a missing executable. Work from the local process outward.
Confirm the target is running
Check that the MongoDB deployment is started and that the host and port in the command are the ones actually serving it. If no host is supplied, MongoDB documents localhost:27017 as the default target. Do not assume that default is correct for a remote, containerized, or cloud deployment.
Inspect the complete URI
Print or review the final command after environment variables are substituted. Look for a misspelled hostname, wrong port, accidental quotes, or a URI pointing to a test environment. A firewall, VPN, proxy, or network policy can also block a valid address.

Use the supported version matrix when the client is old or the server is unusually new. Updating Database Tools can resolve protocol and platform limitations, but do not replace a production client during an active migration without testing the command against a non-production database first.

How do I fix authentication failures?
Authentication errors usually mean the username, password, authentication database, or mechanism does not match the account configured on the server.
- Confirm the username spelling and the database in which that user was created.
- Check that the account has permission to write the selected database and collection.
- Use the server’s required authentication mechanism and options.
- Avoid placing a reusable password directly in a process-visible URI. MongoDB recommends omitting the password for an interactive prompt or using the
--configoption for a configuration file.
After changing credentials, inspect shell history, task definitions, build logs, and process listings for accidentally exposed secrets. Rotate a password if it was published in a command line or log.
How do I fix TLS and certificate errors?
TLS failures commonly result from an untrusted certificate authority, a hostname that does not match the certificate, or TLS options that do not match the server.
- Use the server’s correct hostname in the URI; do not substitute an unrelated IP address when hostname validation is required.
- Supply the correct CA configuration required by the deployment.
- Check the system clock and certificate validity dates.
- Confirm that the Database Tools version supports the server’s TLS requirements.
- Retry with certificate validation enabled.
Do not disable certificate validation as a routine workaround. Fix the CA chain, hostname, or URI instead; bypassing validation can expose credentials and imported data to interception.
Why does a CSV or TSV import fail?
Import failures often come from options that do not describe the file. MongoDB supports Extended JSON, CSV, and TSV, but each format needs matching settings.
Match the declared type
Specify the correct --type for the input. Treating a CSV as JSON, or a TSV as CSV, can produce parse errors or malformed fields.

Check delimiter, header, and field names
Inspect the first lines in a text editor. Confirm the delimiter, whether the first row is a header, and that field names map to the document structure you expect. Quoted delimiters, embedded line breaks, and inconsistent column counts are common causes of rejected rows.
Check encoding and malformed records
Save the file in an encoding your tool and environment handle consistently. Test with a small sample before a large or production import so you can isolate a bad row without creating a large partial load.

Read every option in the final command, especially the collection name and --drop. A destructive option can remove existing collection data before loading the new records. Back up the target and use a staging collection when the consequences of a mistake are high.

Scheduled tasks can run under a different account with a different PATH, network context, certificate store, and permissions. Use an absolute executable path, provide an explicit configuration file where appropriate, and verify access under the task’s account.
