movie.exe is not a standard Windows component. The filename can belong to an ordinary game or media application, an unrelated third-party program, or a malicious file. Is movie.exe safe to run?
It may be safe, but the filename alone cannot establish that. A copy installed inside a known application’s official folder and signed by the expected publisher is a different risk from a file that appeared in a temporary directory, a user profile, a startup folder, an email attachment or a removable drive.

Use the following sequence before trying to launch the program. It keeps the investigation focused on the copy that is producing the error.
- Record the complete path. In the error dialog, note the location if it is shown. Otherwise, right-click the file in File Explorer, choose Properties, and copy the path from the Location field. Do not double-click the file while investigating.
- Check the source. Ask whether you installed a game or application that should contain it, or whether it arrived through an attachment, a download, a script, a USB device or an unexpected startup entry. An unexplained arrival is a reason to scan, not a reason to test-run it.
- Review publisher details. In Properties, inspect the Details tab for product and publisher information. On the Digital Signatures tab, select a signature and choose Details. A valid signature from the publisher you expected is useful evidence; an unsigned file or a signature from an unrelated publisher requires more caution.
- Capture a hash only when you can compare it properly. If the software publisher provides a SHA-256 value for that exact release, calculate the local value in PowerShell with

When should I run Microsoft Defender Offline?
Use an Offline scan when you remain concerned after the normal scan, especially if the file returns, security settings change unexpectedly, or a process appears to start before Windows is fully loaded. Save open work first: the computer restarts and scans before Windows starts.
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
- Select Microsoft Defender Offline scan, then choose Scan now.
- Allow the restart and wait for the scan to finish.
- After Windows loads, return to Protection history and review the result for the recorded path.
If Windows Security detects the file and you cannot verify a legitimate reason for it, Microsoft Support’s guidance is: “If you’re not sure if the item is safe or not it’s best to choose Quarantine.” Do not select Allow on device merely to make an error disappear. Preserve the detection details for support instead.
What should I do if Windows Security detects movie.exe?

How do I repair a legitimate application that uses movie.exe?
If you intentionally installed the parent application and its location and publisher make sense, repair that application rather than downloading a replacement executable.
Use the application’s own repair option
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (called Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds).
