ms10.exe is not a unique Windows component, so its filename alone cannot tell you whether it is safe. One legitimate listing associates ms10.exe with Megamania 10 version 10.08 in C:Program Files (x86)Megamania 10. A separate file named !ms10.exe was classified as malicious by Hybrid Analysis, with a threat score of 100/100 and 77% antivirus detection in a 2025 Falcon Sandbox analysis. Identify the exact path, signer, hash, parent process and behavior before deleting anything. Then use the repair path that matches your case: repair the owning application, scan and quarantine an unknown file, or run DISM followed by SFC when Windows system files are damaged.
What is ms10.exe?
ms10.exe is simply an executable filename. It does not identify one standard Windows service, driver or system utility. Different software can use the same name, and a leading exclamation mark creates another filename entirely: !ms10.exe.

A third-party Advanced Uninstaller listing identifies ms10.exe as the main executable for Megamania 10 version 10.08. That listing places the file under C:Program Files (x86)Megamania 10, which is a plausible location for an intentionally installed game. It proves only that one application used the name; it does not make every copy of ms10.exe trustworthy.
Hybrid Analysis examined a different sample called !ms10.exe. Its 2025 Falcon Sandbox report gave that submitted sample a threat score of 100/100 and reported 77% antivirus detection, together with spyware indicators, registry persistence, process injection, WMI queries, process discovery and an attempt to stop a system service. Those findings apply to that sample, not automatically to every file whose name resembles it.

Why the filename is not enough
- Legitimate applications can install an executable with a short, generic name.
- Malware can copy a familiar-looking name into a different folder to avoid attention.
- A renamed or repacked file can have the same name but a different hash, signer and behavior.
- The process shown in Task Manager may be launched by a game, a startup entry, a scheduled task, a service or another process.
Microsoft treats unknown or uncommon software as a higher-risk signal for typical users, while also noting that unknown software is not automatically malicious. Treat the name as a clue, not a verdict.
Is ms10.exe safe or a virus?
There is no filename-only answer. A copy that belongs to an application you deliberately installed, sits in that application’s normal directory and has a matching publisher signature is less suspicious than an unsigned copy in a user-writable or temporary folder. A security detection, unexplained persistence or hostile behavior raises the risk substantially.

Do not add an unknown ms10.exe to an antivirus exclusion simply because the name looks familiar. Exclusions can allow a harmful file to keep running while hiding the evidence you need to investigate.
Why is ms10.exe running in Task Manager?
Task Manager shows the process that is currently running, but not necessarily why it started. The process may be part of an installed game, launched at startup, triggered by a scheduled task or started by another program.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Find
ms10.exein the Processes or Details tab. - Right-click it and choose Open file location. Record the complete path before ending the process.
- Right-click the file in File Explorer, choose Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures and Details tabs.
- Note the publisher, product name, file version, creation or modification dates and whether the signature validates.
If the process is associated with the game you installed and the path matches its installation directory, a running process may be normal while the game is open. If it runs from an unexplained folder, returns after you end it, or has no credible publisher, continue with the unknown-file procedure instead of assuming it is harmless.
How do I identify the exact ms10.exe file?
Collect identity and behavior evidence first. This prevents deleting a legitimate game file and preserves information that security support may need.

Record the path and file properties
- Copy the full path from Open file location.
- Check whether the directory belongs to an installed application, Windows itself, a temporary folder or a user profile location.
- In Properties, check the publisher and digital signature. A missing or invalid signature is a warning, but a valid signature should still match the application and path.
- Record the file size and version shown on the Details tab.
Calculate a SHA-256 hash
A hash lets you compare the exact file, rather than relying on its name. In an elevated or ordinary Command Prompt, use:
certutil -hashfile "C:fullpathms10.exe" SHA256
Replace the example path with the path you recorded. Save the resulting hash with the file’s properties and detection information. If you submit the file to a security service or support team, use the hash to make clear which copy was examined.
Check how it starts
Look for an owning application, startup entry, scheduled task, service or suspicious parent process. In Task Manager, the Startup apps tab shows programs configured to start with Windows. In the Start menu, search for Task Scheduler and inspect tasks whose action launches the file. In the Services app, look for a service whose executable path points to it. Disable or delete persistence only after documenting it and confirming that it is not part of a legitimate application.
Observe resource and network behavior
Note whether the process repeatedly consumes unusual CPU, memory or disk resources, opens network connections when its owning application is idle, injects into another process or reappears after termination. These observations do not prove malware by themselves, but they help distinguish an application process from an unexplained resident process.
What should I do if ms10.exe belongs to Megamania 10 or another known application?
If you intentionally installed the owning application and the path and signer make sense, repair or remove that application instead of downloading a replacement executable from an unfamiliar website.
- Close the game and any related launcher.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11 or Windows 10, locate the application and choose its available Repair, Modify or Uninstall action. If your edition presents a different label, use the application’s own uninstaller.
- Restart Windows after a repair or uninstall.
- Run the application again and check whether the original error remains.
- If the error started after a partial update or damaged installation, reinstall from the publisher’s original installer or your legitimate game library rather than downloading an isolated
ms10.exe.
For the Megamania 10 example, the relevant clue is the directory association with C:Program Files (x86)Megamania 10. A copy found elsewhere should be investigated independently, even if the filename is identical.

How do I remove an unknown or detected ms10.exe?
Stop launching the file, preserve its identity details and let current security software quarantine it. Do not rely on deleting only the visible executable: a persistent threat can recreate it through a startup entry, scheduled task, service or registry setting.
- Disconnect the computer from untrusted networks if you suspect active compromise, while keeping access to the security tools and support resources you need.
- Do not open the file again. If it is running, use Task Manager to end the process after recording its path and properties.
- Run a current full-system scan and allow the security product to quarantine or remove the detection.
- Inspect startup entries, scheduled tasks, services and relevant registry persistence for entries that launch the same path or a related payload. Remove only entries you can identify confidently; otherwise preserve the details for incident-response help.
- Restart and scan again. Confirm that the file and its persistence mechanism do not return.
- Change important passwords from a known-clean device if the investigation confirms credential-stealing or spyware behavior.
If cleanup cannot be trusted, preserve essential documents carefully and seek incident-response assistance or perform a clean Windows installation. A clean reinstall is a last-resort recovery step, but it is safer than continuing to use a system whose persistence cannot be removed reliably.
Which Microsoft scans can check a suspicious ms10.exe?
Use the scan that matches the question. Microsoft says the Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) supports Windows 11 and other listed Windows versions, removes only specific prevalent active threats and does not replace antivirus. For broader detection and removal, Microsoft points users to Windows Defender Offline or Microsoft Safety Scanner.
Run a full scan
Start with your installed, up-to-date antivirus and choose a full scan. A full scan checks more locations than a quick scan and may take a long time. Microsoft notes that an MSRT full scan can take several hours and examines fixed and removable drives, but its coverage is limited to a small subset of threats.
Use Windows Defender Offline
Windows Defender Offline restarts the computer into a trusted scanning environment, which can help when a threat hides while Windows is running. Save open work first, connect the device to power and follow the Windows Security prompt to start the offline scan. Review the result after Windows restarts.
Use Microsoft Safety Scanner when appropriate
Safety Scanner is a downloadable, on-demand check for suspected malware. Obtain a current copy from Microsoft’s official security pages, run it with administrative rights and read the result file. Because such tools are updated regularly, discard an old copy and download a fresh version when you need another scan.

How do I fix an ms10.exe system error?
First decide whether the message appears only when one application starts or whether Windows reports broader protected-system-file corruption. Application-only errors usually call for repairing or reinstalling the owning application. Windows-wide corruption calls for the Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool followed by System File Checker.
Repair the affected application first
- Write down the complete error text and when it appears.
- Check the executable’s path and signer as described above.
- Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps and the application’s repair or uninstall option.
- Install pending updates for Windows and the application from their official channels.
- Restart and test before trying additional system repairs.
Run DISM, then SFC
Microsoft instructs users to run DISM before SFC when protected Windows components may be damaged. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run these commands in order:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for DISM to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
Keep the window open until verification reaches 100 percent. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC relies on; SFC scans protected system files and replaces corrupted copies when a valid replacement is available. Restart Windows after both commands and test again.
These commands repair Windows components. They do not authenticate an unknown third-party ms10.exe, remove malware or prove that a suspicious executable is safe. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, keep the exact result and investigate the underlying Windows installation rather than repeatedly deleting an executable.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is ms10.exe related to MS10-046?
No. The similar text is a naming coincidence. MS10-046 was a 2010 Windows shortcut vulnerability involving specially crafted LNK or PIF files. CERT/CC reported that displaying such a shortcut could enable arbitrary code execution and that applying Microsoft’s update addressed the issue.
Microsoft also describes the related CplLnk detection and recommends a full antimalware scan and current updates. That vulnerability advisory does not identify a modern executable named ms10.exe. Treat an ms10.exe process investigation and an MS10-046 patch check as separate tasks.

What mistakes should I avoid when troubleshooting ms10.exe?
- Deleting by filename alone: you may remove a game component while leaving the real problem untouched.
- Downloading a replacement DLL or EXE: random download sites can supply tampered files and create a second security problem.
- Trusting a familiar folder name: malware can imitate an application’s directory structure; verify the signature and hash.
- Running only one quick scan: persistent threats may require a full scan, offline scan or Safety Scanner.
- Assuming MSRT is a complete antivirus: Microsoft says it covers only specific prevalent threats and does not replace antivirus.
- Running SFC first: Microsoft’s sequence is DISM followed by SFC when Windows protected files may be corrupted.
- Removing only the executable: persistence can recreate it through startup, scheduled-task, service or registry entries.
Which repair path fits my symptoms?
Use the shortest path that matches the evidence, then escalate if the result does not hold.
- Known game or application path, valid matching signer: repair, update or uninstall that application.
- Unknown path, no credible signer, security detection or suspicious persistence: stop launching it, quarantine it, run full and deeper scans, and investigate persistence.
- Error appears across Windows or protected files are reported as corrupt: run DISM and then SFC from an elevated Command Prompt.
- File returns after removal or cleanup cannot be verified: preserve essential data and seek incident-response help or use a clean Windows reinstall.
- Question concerns MS10-046: apply the relevant Windows security updates and follow Microsoft’s antimalware guidance; do not treat the advisory as an identification of
ms10.exe.
As an optional shortcut after these manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL problems, while also offering cleanup, settings adjustments and an app-crash log. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I download a replacement ms10.exe to stop the error?
No. Because the filename is used by unrelated software, a replacement from an unknown download site could be the wrong version or tampered. Repair the identified application or repair Windows components instead, and keep the original path and hash for comparison.
Why does ms10.exe come back after I delete it?
A startup entry, scheduled task, service or registry persistence mechanism may be restoring it. Record those launch points, scan from a trusted environment and remove the persistence mechanism rather than repeatedly deleting the visible file.
Does a valid digital signature guarantee that ms10.exe is harmless?
A valid signature helps establish who signed a file, but it is only one part of the assessment. The signer must match the application, installation path and expected behavior, and security detections or unexplained persistence still require investigation.
Will DISM and SFC remove a malicious ms10.exe?
No. DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They do not authenticate or remove an unknown third-party executable, so suspected malware still requires antivirus, offline scanning or Safety Scanner.
