msnsvc.exe should be treated as suspicious until you verify the specific file. A historical BleepingComputer startup record identifies an entry named “MSN Service” as “A variant of the IRCBot family of worms and IRC backdoor Trojans” and says it can start through Windows Run-family registry keys. Microsoft’s current Defender process documentation does not list msnsvc.exe as a Defender component. That does not prove every file with this name is identical, so do not delete it blindly: record its full path, publisher, signature and detection name, then scan it with trusted security tools. The steps below show how to investigate recurring alerts, remove a malicious copy and repair startup errors without restoring an unsafe file.

What is msnsvc.exe?

msnsvc.exe is the filename used by a historical startup entry called “MSN Service.” BleepingComputer’s exact-file record classifies that entry as undesirable and describes it as a variant of the IRCBot family of worms and IRC backdoor Trojans. The record says the program may establish persistence through the Run, RunOnce, RunServices or RunServicesOnce registry locations.

The name is not evidence of an official Microsoft or MSN component. A separate, older File.net listing reports no known publisher description, no Windows-core-file status and possible startup registry configuration. That page is user-submitted and should be treated only as low-confidence corroboration, not as a measured malware score. Its reported percentage should not be used to estimate how common or dangerous the file is.

Microsoft’s reviewed Defender process list includes components such as MsMpEng.exe, NisSrv.exe, MpCmdRun.exe and MpDefenderCoreService.exe; it does not name msnsvc.exe. An unexpected file with this name therefore deserves verification before it is allowed to run.

Question What the available evidence supports
Is the filename associated with malware? Yes. The historical startup entry is classified as undesirable and associated with IRCBot/IRC backdoor families.
Is every file named msnsvc.exe guaranteed to be the same malware? No. A filename alone cannot establish identity; path, signature, publisher and scan results matter.
Is it a documented Windows Defender process? Not in the reviewed Microsoft Defender process documentation.
Why can it return after reboot? The historical entry uses Run-family registry keys, which can launch a program at sign-in or startup.

Is msnsvc.exe safe?

Assume an unexpected copy is unsafe until a trusted scan and signature check say otherwise. The historical classification is serious, but it is not proof that every local file with the same name belongs to that exact IRCBot variant. Malware can use familiar-looking names, and a deleted or quarantined file can leave a broken startup reference that produces an error without an active process.

Do not infer legitimacy from the “MSN” prefix, a location under a system directory, or the fact that Windows reports an error when the file is missing. The old startup catalog’s %System% notation refers to system directories on older Windows versions; a matching filename in such a directory is not proof that it is part of Windows.

Why does msnsvc.exe keep starting?

Repeated launches usually have one of three explanations: an unwanted program is still present and is being started by a registry entry, a security product removed the executable but left its startup reference, or another infection component is recreating it. The historical record specifically names the Run-family keys, so a recurring alert at sign-in is consistent with persistence rather than with a normal Windows service.

Startup persistence

Windows can start programs from per-user and machine-wide locations such as HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun and HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun. Older systems also used the RunServices and RunServicesOnce families. A value that points to a removed file can trigger “file not found” messages, while a value that points to a surviving copy can relaunch the program.

Quarantine or deletion

Microsoft explains that quarantine moves a detected file and stops it from running. The startup value may remain, so Windows can continue trying to invoke msnsvc.exe even though the executable is no longer available. Do not restore a quarantined copy merely because the error disappears; restoration can reactivate the threat.

How it may have arrived

Microsoft lists unexpected email attachments, malicious Office macros, bundled third-party downloads, compromised webpages and other malware as common infection routes. Think back to the file’s appearance: a suspicious attachment, cracked software, an untrusted installer or a bundle can explain why a fake “MSN service” name was added.

What do msnsvc.exe errors mean?

There is no documented Windows error-code list unique to msnsvc.exe. Treat the message as a clue, not as proof of a standard Windows component failure. A startup alert can mean the file is still active, the file was quarantined, the registry points to a deleted path, or an infection damaged other system components.

Before changing anything, write down the exact message, detection name, complete path, command line, publisher and digital-signature result. These details distinguish a stale startup reference from an executable that is currently running. A message such as “Windows cannot find …” after a scan often indicates a leftover startup value; a detection that names a path and behavior indicates that further scanning is needed.

How do I verify msnsvc.exe safely?

Verify the file before deleting it or editing the registry. Use an administrator account for inspection, but do not approve a prompt to allow the file simply to stop an alert.

  1. Open the alert or Task Manager. In Task Manager, select the Details tab, locate msnsvc.exe if it is running, right-click it and choose Open file location. If it is not running, use the path shown in the security alert or startup error. Copy the complete path and command line into a note.
  2. Check file properties. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect the Details tab for a product name and publisher. On the Digital Signatures tab, verify that a signature exists, is valid and belongs to a publisher you recognize. An absent, invalid or unexpected publisher is a warning sign; a signature is evidence to evaluate, not a guarantee of safety.
  3. Check where it starts. Open Task Manager’s Startup apps tab and note any entry that points to the same path. For a registry value, record the hive, key, value name and command line. Do not delete the value yet.
  4. Check the security result. Record the product’s detection name and whether it says active, quarantined or blocked. If the result is unknown, submit the file through the installed security product’s analysis feature or Microsoft’s reporting channel. Do not add an exclusion or choose “Allow” merely to suppress the notification.
  5. Disconnect if compromise appears active. If the process is running unexpectedly, showing network activity or repeatedly returning, disconnect Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet while you prepare the scan. Keep the machine offline except when downloading updates from a trusted device or reconnecting briefly to update security intelligence.

How do I remove msnsvc.exe malware?

Use the following sequence. It prioritizes current security intelligence and preserves evidence before you edit startup settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Update Microsoft Defender

Open Windows Security from the Start menu, choose Virus & threat protection, select Protection updates and click Check for updates. Updated security intelligence improves the chance of recognizing an old or repackaged sample. If the computer is offline, update from a trusted connection or use another clean machine to obtain the appropriate Microsoft update package.

2. Run a full scan

In Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, select Full scan and start it. A full scan examines all accessible files and running locations, so it can take substantially longer than a quick scan. Save work first and keep the computer powered on.

3. Quarantine or remove every detection

When the scan finishes, open Protection history. For a confirmed detection, choose Quarantine or Remove according to the action offered. Microsoft distinguishes these actions from Allow on device: a quarantined file is moved and stopped from running, while allowing it tells Defender to permit the item. Allow only software and a publisher you have independently verified. Do not restore msnsvc.exe simply because a startup message disappears after restoration.

4. Run Microsoft Defender Offline when it returns

If the detection reappears after reboot, or Defender cannot remove it while Windows is running, choose Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan, then select Scan now. Windows restarts into a separate scanning environment, which can inspect files before normal startup programs load. Save documents and close applications first. The computer will restart again when the scan completes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Use the Malicious Software Removal Tool as a supplement

Microsoft’s Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) targets prevalent malware and can reverse some changes. It may require a restart or manual cleanup, and Microsoft says it does not replace full-time antivirus protection. The Microsoft Download Center lists version 5.146 with a publication date of 13 October 2026; because this version is time-sensitive, verify the current version on the download page before running it. Use MSRT as a second cleanup measure, not as a substitute for updated Defender protection.

Scan option Best use Important limitation
Quick scan Fast check of common locations after an alert. May not examine every file or persistence location.
Full scan Thorough examination of accessible files and running locations. Can take a long time and may affect computer availability.
Defender Offline Suspected persistence that survives a normal scan. Requires a restart and temporarily takes Windows offline.
MSRT Supplemental cleanup for prevalent malware families. Not a replacement for continuous antivirus protection; may require manual steps.

How do I remove a leftover msnsvc.exe startup entry?

Only remove a startup value after a trusted scan identifies the file or confirms that the path is stale. Export the key first so you can restore it if you make a mistake.

  1. Press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  2. In Registry Editor, select the key named in the alert. Common locations include HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun, HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRunOnce, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRunOnce. Older systems may also show RunServices or RunServicesOnce.
  3. With the key selected, choose File > Export, save the .reg backup somewhere safe and give it a descriptive name such as startup-backup-2026-10-26.reg.
  4. In the right pane, inspect the value data. Match the entire path and command line to the file you recorded. Do not remove a value solely because its name contains “MSN.”
  5. After the scan confirms the entry is unwanted or points to a file that no longer exists, right-click that specific value and choose Delete. Do not delete the whole Run key.
  6. Restart Windows and check Task Manager > Startup apps and Protection history. If the value returns, run Defender Offline again and look for another persistence location instead of repeatedly deleting the same entry.

Editing the registry incorrectly can prevent legitimate programs from starting or, in severe cases, damage Windows configuration. If you cannot identify the exact value, stop after exporting the key and seek qualified technical help.

How can I repair Windows errors after the malware is gone?

Once scans are clean and the startup value is removed, restart and test the original action that produced the error. If Windows still reports a missing file or a program crashes, the alert may be a stale reference or collateral system damage rather than an active msnsvc.exe process.

Check startup and scheduled behavior

Review Task Manager > Startup apps for entries with “File not found.” In Event Viewer, open Windows Logs > Application and System and note events at the exact time of the failure. Keep the event source, event ID and path with your earlier notes; they help distinguish a Windows service problem from a third-party application that was damaged.

Repair protected Windows files

Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) and run:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

When it completes, run:

sfc /scannow

Restart and test again. These commands repair Windows component and protected-file problems; they do not remove malware or prove that a suspicious executable is safe. Run the security scans first and repeat them if detections return.

Restore only from a trusted backup

If a legitimate application was damaged, reinstall it from the publisher’s official installer or restore a known-clean backup. Do not copy an old msnsvc.exe from another computer, download a replacement DLL from an unofficial site or add a security exclusion to make the application launch.

How should I compare cleanup options?

Choose tools by the job they perform rather than by a claimed detection percentage. Microsoft warns against running multiple real-time antivirus products simultaneously because they can conflict. A one-time scanner can be used as a supplement, but it should not replace an up-to-date product that provides ongoing protection.

Capability What to look for Why it matters here
Real-time protection Continuous monitoring versus an on-demand scan. Real-time protection can block a relaunch; on-demand scans are useful for confirmation and cleanup.
Scan scope Full-system and offline options, not only a quick scan. Persistence may survive a normal Windows session.
Quarantine and rollback A way to isolate a file without running it and review the action. Preserves a safer recovery path than deleting random files.
Current intelligence Regularly updated signatures and detection rules. An old catalog entry does not guarantee recognition of a modified sample.
Cleanup versus repair Whether the product removes malware, repairs Windows settings or both. Removing a threat and fixing a broken startup reference are separate tasks.

After Microsoft Defender has scanned and removed any malware, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut for repairing residual Windows issues such as broken system elements, invalid redirects or shared-DLL problems. It can also adjust settings, clean temporary and cache files, provide privacy and vulnerability checks, and log application crashes, but it complements antivirus protection and does not replace it; results vary and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and offers a free trial by category for at least two days before a subscription.

How do I prevent another msnsvc.exe incident?

  • Keep Windows and security intelligence current, and leave a trusted real-time antivirus product enabled.
  • Do not open unexpected attachments or enable macros in documents from untrusted sources.
  • Download game installers, mods, patches and utilities from publishers or communities you trust; avoid cracked software and bundled installers that add unrequested programs.
  • Keep browser and document protections enabled when visiting unfamiliar sites.
  • Use a standard user account for everyday work where practical, reserving administrator approval for tasks that need it.
  • Maintain offline or otherwise protected backups of game saves and personal files. Test that a backup can actually be restored.
  • Review Protection history after a cleanup and investigate repeated detections instead of repeatedly allowing the same path.

What should I do if the file is digitally signed?

A valid signature from a recognizable publisher is a reason to investigate further, not an automatic clearance. Confirm that the signature is valid on the current file, compare the path and product details with the publisher’s documentation, and submit the file to your security product for analysis if the detection remains. Malware can be repackaged or signed with a compromised certificate, so context and scan results still matter.

What if msnsvc.exe is gone but Windows still shows an error?

That usually indicates a stale startup value or a damaged application configuration rather than proof that the executable is still present. Keep the path and command line from the original alert, remove only the matching startup value after exporting its registry key, then use Event Viewer and the Windows repair commands to identify remaining damage. If the message names a specific game or application, reinstall that application from a trusted source instead of downloading a replacement executable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I delete msnsvc.exe from the Windows folder?

Do not delete it solely because of its filename or location. First record the path, check the publisher and signature, run a trusted scan, and remove or quarantine the detected file through the security product; then clean the specific startup value if the scan identifies one.

Why does Windows Defender keep detecting the same file after a restart?

A Run-family registry value or another persistence mechanism may be recreating the file, or the detection may be a leftover reference to a quarantined copy. Run a full scan followed by Microsoft Defender Offline, review Protection history, and inspect the exact startup path before editing anything.

Is the Malicious Software Removal Tool enough to protect my PC?

No. MSRT is a targeted cleanup utility for prevalent malware and does not provide continuous antivirus protection. Keep a current real-time antivirus product enabled and use MSRT only as a supplemental scan when appropriate.

Could a game mod or installer be responsible for msnsvc.exe?

It is possible for bundled or untrusted downloads to introduce unwanted software, and Microsoft lists bundled third-party downloads among common infection routes. Re-scan installers and mod archives from trusted sources, avoid cracked packages, and restore game files from the platform’s verified installer rather than copying an executable from another PC.
