mswinext.exe is generally the executable installed by Microsoft’s legacy MSN Toolbar, later renamed Bing Bar. A legitimate copy is usually found under C:Program FilesMSN ToolbarPlatform[version]mswinext.exe (or the equivalent 32-bit Program Files folder), and it is not required for Windows to start. The filename alone does not prove that a copy is safe, however: malware can use the same name. Check the complete path, publisher signature, parent program, startup behavior and security-scan result before deciding what to do.
Most errors are resolved by removing an unwanted MSN Toolbar/Bing Bar installation, repairing a damaged uninstall record, or scanning a suspicious copy instead of deleting the executable blindly. The sequence below starts with identification, then covers safe removal, failed uninstallations and possible malware.

mswinext.exe is associated with the legacy MSN Toolbar for Windows Internet Explorer. Microsoft later described MSN Toolbar as Bing Bar, a toolbar that integrated Bing search with Internet Explorer. BleepingComputer records the normal legacy location as C:Program FilesMSN ToolbarPlatform[version]mswinext.exe; on a 32-bit installation the same folder may be under the 32-bit Program Files directory.
The program is an optional toolbar component, not a core Windows process. A computer can run Windows without it, and the file does not need to launch at every sign-in. That distinction matters when troubleshooting: an error mentioning mswinext.exe usually points to an old toolbar installation, a broken reference left after removal, or a file that only happens to share the name.

Why the same filename can mean different things
Windows identifies an executable by its path and binary, not by its name alone. A malicious program can be named mswinext.exe to look familiar, while a genuine toolbar file can become damaged or incomplete. Treat the filename as a clue and verify the individual copy on your PC.
Is mswinext.exe safe?
A copy in the expected MSN Toolbar platform folder, carrying a valid Microsoft publisher signature, associated with an installed MSN Toolbar or Bing Bar entry and free of security detections is consistent with the legitimate legacy component. It is still obsolete and optional, so keeping it is rarely necessary if you no longer use the toolbar.
An unexpected directory, an absent or invalid signature, unexplained startup persistence, repeated recreation after deletion, unusual network activity or an antivirus detection raises the risk. None of those clues proves malware by itself; Microsoft advises evaluating several signals together. Do not whitelist a file merely because its name resembles a Microsoft file.
Evidence that supports a legitimate copy
- The full path is inside
Program FilesMSN ToolbarPlatform[version]or its 32-bit Program Files equivalent. - The file’s Properties dialog shows a Microsoft publisher and a valid entry on the Digital Signatures tab.
- Installed apps or Programs and Features lists MSN Toolbar or Bing Bar as the parent product.
- An up-to-date security scan reports no detection.
Evidence that requires investigation
- The process runs from a user profile, temporary folder, Downloads folder or an unfamiliar Windows directory rather than the toolbar’s platform folder.
- The signature is missing, invalid or claims a publisher that does not match the expected product.
- The process creates a startup entry you did not authorize, returns after removal, or makes network connections that do not fit a toolbar component.
- Defender or another current security product identifies the file or a related program.
How do I check which mswinext.exe is running?
Use Task Manager and the file’s Properties before changing anything. This records the evidence needed to distinguish an old toolbar component from an impostor.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If the compact view appears, select More details.
- Find
mswinext.exeon the Processes or Details tab. Right-click it and choose Open file location. Copy or write down the complete path shown in File Explorer. - Right-click the executable, choose Properties, and inspect the Details and Digital Signatures tabs. A valid signature is useful evidence, but it should be considered with the path and parent product rather than treated as the only test.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Control Panel > Programs and Features) and look for Bing Bar or MSN Toolbar. Microsoft identifies Bing Bar as the successor name for MSN Toolbar, so either label can describe the legacy installation.
- Run a current security scan before allowing an unexpected copy to continue. If the process is persistent or the scan cannot clean it while Windows is running, plan an Offline scan as described below.
What if Task Manager cannot find the process?
An error at sign-in or when launching an old program may refer to a file that is already missing. In that case, search the installed-program list and the startup locations for a leftover MSN Toolbar/Bing Bar entry rather than assuming a currently running process is present. A broken shortcut, scheduled startup reference or uninstall record can continue to call a file that has been removed.
Why do mswinext.exe errors appear?
The message usually reflects one of four situations: a damaged toolbar file, a partial uninstall, an obsolete startup reference or a suspicious replacement. The wording of the dialog can vary, but the remedy depends on which situation the evidence supports.

Damaged or incomplete toolbar installation
If Windows reports that mswinext.exe is missing, cannot start, or has encountered an error, the MSN Toolbar/Bing Bar installation may be incomplete. Old toolbar components can also conflict with a modern Windows setup or a browser that no longer uses them. Reinstalling an obsolete toolbar solely to restore this one executable is usually unnecessary; remove the parent program instead unless you have a specific legacy requirement.
Partial removal and orphaned startup entries
Deleting a folder or an individual executable before using the product’s uninstaller can leave registry or startup references behind. Windows then displays an error each time it tries to launch the missing path. Removing the parent entry through the normal uninstall interface, followed by a restart, is safer than hunting for the file and deleting it first.
Impostor or unwanted software
A file with this name in an unrelated directory, especially one that returns after deletion or triggers a security alert, may be unrelated to Bing Bar. Bundled downloads are a common way for unwanted software to arrive. Do not run, exclude or upload the file to other systems until a current security scan and the signature/path checks are complete.
How do I remove MSN Toolbar or Bing Bar safely?
Uninstall the parent toolbar through Windows rather than deleting mswinext.exe manually. This removes its registered components and avoids leaving a startup call that points to a nonexistent file.
- Save your work and close Internet Explorer and any other browser or toolbar-related window.
- On Windows 11 or Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. On older Windows versions, open Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Search for Bing Bar or MSN Toolbar. Select the entry and choose Uninstall (or Uninstall/Change in Control Panel).
- Follow the removal wizard. If it asks whether to close a browser, allow it to do so, then restart Windows when the wizard finishes.
- After restarting, check Task Manager and the startup list for a remaining
mswinext.exereference. If no process or startup entry remains and no error returns, do not delete unrelated files from the Program Files directory.
Why uninstalling the parent is better than deleting the file
The executable can be accompanied by toolbar libraries, registration data and startup settings. Manual deletion removes only one item and can leave those references intact. It can also destroy evidence needed to investigate a suspicious copy. Use the installed-program entry first; reserve manual cleanup for a later, evidence-based step.
What should I do if Bing Bar or MSN Toolbar will not uninstall?
A failed uninstall often means that the product’s registration data or uninstall keys are damaged. Restart Windows and try the same uninstall path once more. If the entry still fails, Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter is designed to repair corrupted registry keys and incomplete uninstall data that block removal, updating or installation.

- Restart the PC. A pending file operation or a locked browser process can prevent the first attempt from completing.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features and try the Bing Bar/MSN Toolbar uninstall again.
- If Windows reports that the program cannot be removed, run Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter. Choose the option for uninstalling, select the Bing Bar or MSN Toolbar entry when it appears, and let the tool repair the broken uninstall information.
- Restart Windows after the troubleshooter completes. Confirm that the installed-program entry and any startup reference are gone.
Do not erase registry keys by hand merely to remove the error. A wrong deletion can affect other programs, while the Microsoft troubleshooter targets the specific installation data that prevents a normal uninstall.
How do I handle a suspicious mswinext.exe copy?
Stop treating the file as a toolbar component until it has been checked. The goal is to contain a possible threat without destroying the information a security tool needs.
- Do not open the file, approve a firewall prompt for it, add it to an exclusion list or copy it to another computer.
- If there are signs of active compromise, such as repeated recreation, unexpected network traffic or multiple security warnings, disconnect the PC from networks while you investigate. Keep it powered on only as long as needed to save evidence and begin scanning.
- Update Microsoft Defender’s security intelligence, then run a Full scan. Microsoft recommends current protection for unwanted software.
- If the unwanted process persists or cannot be removed while Windows is running, use Microsoft Defender Offline. The PC restarts into a separate scanning environment so persistent software has less opportunity to hide.
- After the scan, review the result and quarantine or remove what the security product identifies. Restart and scan again if the alert returns.
- Only after the system is clean should you remove a leftover Bing Bar/MSN Toolbar entry through Installed apps or Programs and Features.
Why a security alert should not be ignored
Microsoft lists an unsigned file claiming to be from Microsoft, an unfamiliar process in a Windows directory and suspicious network behavior as warning signs. Those indicators are not individually conclusive, but an alert combined with a path or signature mismatch warrants investigation before any attempt to restore or whitelist the executable.
Can I delete mswinext.exe manually?
If the file is part of an unwanted, legitimate toolbar installation, uninstall Bing Bar or MSN Toolbar first. Direct deletion can leave an orphaned startup entry and produce the same error at every sign-in. If the copy is suspicious, deleting it before scanning can remove useful evidence and does not guarantee that a second component is gone.
After a successful uninstall and restart, an empty leftover folder can be removed only if Windows no longer lists the parent program and no process or startup reference points to it. Do not take ownership of protected folders or alter registry entries just to force deletion. If Windows says the file is in use, return to the uninstall and security-scan steps rather than terminating random system processes.
How can I compare two files named mswinext.exe?
Use the same six comparison axes every time. A filename match is the weakest signal; agreement across path, signature, parent product, startup behavior, hash or antivirus verdict and network behavior is more informative.

| Check | What to record | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Filesystem path | Complete drive, folders and filename | The legacy location is under Program FilesMSN ToolbarPlatform[version] or its 32-bit equivalent. |
| Authenticode signature | Publisher and signature validity in Properties | A valid Microsoft signature supports authenticity; a missing or invalid signature requires further investigation. |
| Parent product | Installed-app entry and uninstall name | Bing Bar and MSN Toolbar are the relevant legacy product names. |
| Startup mechanism | Whether it launches at sign-in and how | The executable is not required to start Windows; unexpected persistence is a warning sign. |
| Security verdict | Current Defender or other security-product result | A detection should be handled as a security issue, not bypassed because of the filename. |
| Network behavior | Unexpected connections or repeated activity | Unusual behavior adds concern when combined with other mismatches. |
What is the safest decision for each situation?
- Expected path, valid signature, installed toolbar and no detections: the file is consistent with the legacy component. If you do not need Bing Bar, uninstall the parent product because the executable is optional and obsolete.
- Toolbar listed but the file is missing: remove the parent entry normally. If removal fails, use the Program Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter.
- Unexpected path or invalid signature: do not run or whitelist it. Update Defender, perform a Full scan and use Offline scanning if the process persists.
- Repeated recreation or multiple alerts: treat it as a possible compromise, disconnect networks during investigation and follow the security-cleanup sequence before deleting leftovers.
- Only a startup error remains after removal: restart, verify that the parent entry is gone and look for the remaining startup reference. Do not restore the executable from an untrusted download.
How can I prevent similar toolbar and executable errors?
Install software only from trusted vendors and read bundled-install screens carefully. Microsoft warns that unwanted software can be bundled with third-party downloads; declining optional toolbars reduces the chance of leaving an obsolete browser component behind.
Keep Windows and its security intelligence current, and investigate unexpected startup items instead of allowing them indefinitely. When an old program is no longer needed, use its official uninstall entry and restart so Windows can clear registered components cleanly. Maintain a recent backup before repairing software or making system changes, particularly on a PC that still depends on legacy applications.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should a clean result look like?
After removal, Bing Bar or MSN Toolbar should no longer appear in Installed apps or Programs and Features, Task Manager should not show an active mswinext.exe process, and the sign-in error should stop. A security scan should report no remaining detection. If a file with the same name remains elsewhere, evaluate that copy independently rather than assuming the uninstall failed.

Does mswinext.exe belong to Internet Explorer?
The legitimate file is associated with the MSN Toolbar/Bing Bar, which Microsoft described as a toolbar for Windows Internet Explorer that integrated Bing search. That association does not authenticate every copy with the same filename, so the path and signature still need to be checked.
Will removing Bing Bar remove my Bing account or browser bookmarks?
Uninstalling the toolbar removes its Windows program components; it is not the same as closing an online account. Export or back up any toolbar-specific settings you still need before uninstalling, because an obsolete component may not preserve them.
Why does the error appear only when I sign in?
Windows may be invoking a leftover startup reference at logon even though the executable itself is gone. Check whether the parent toolbar is still registered, complete a normal uninstall, restart, and use the Microsoft uninstall troubleshooter if the registration data is damaged.

Can a valid digital signature guarantee that the file is harmless?
No. A valid signature supports the identity and integrity of the signed file, but it does not explain why a copy is running from an unexpected location or behaving unusually. Combine the signature result with the path, parent-product entry, startup behavior and current security scan.
