mw3-launcher.exe is not identified by name in Activision’s current Modern Warfare III support documentation, so the filename alone cannot prove that it is genuine or malicious. Is mw3-launcher.exe safe?
It can be legitimate when it is installed by an official storefront in the expected MWIII directory, but the filename itself is not enough to establish safety. Check the file’s full path

Open Properties and select Digital Signatures. A properly signed file should show a valid signature connected to the expected game publisher or installation source. Use the security product already installed on Windows to scan both the executable and its containing folder. If the product quarantined the file, record the detection name and time. Do not restore it merely because the filename looks familiar. First replace the file through the official client or verify the installation; restore only when the security product’s result and the storefront’s replacement agree that the file is expected.
Check provenance and hashes when you need stronger evidence
If support staff asks for a hash, calculate it from the copy in the official game directory and provide the value with the storefront and game version. A hash is useful for comparing two files, but a matching hash is meaningful only against a trusted reference supplied by the publisher or storefront. Do not trust hash values posted on random download or “DLL fix” sites.
Why does Windows show a mw3-launcher.exe error?

- “Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)”: Steam says this usually means a game file is missing or blocked by another program. Check quarantine and verify the files before reinstalling.
- The launcher opens and immediately closes: overlays, input-remapping utilities, recording tools, and other background applications can interfere with startup.
- A shortcut points to a nonexistent file: the shortcut may target the old Call of Duty HQ structure. Launch the standalone MWIII entry in your current storefront.
- A crash or freeze after an update: compare the computer with MWIII’s current minimum requirements and update the video driver recommended for your GPU.
- The file is present but unexplained: an unexpected path, invalid signature, or security detection warrants removal and a clean storefront installation rather than a downloaded replacement.
How do I fix a missing or blocked mw3-launcher.exe?
Follow these steps in order. They preserve your account installation where possible and avoid introducing an untrusted executable.
1. Identify the storefront and account
Open the client that owns the game: Battle.net, Steam, or Microsoft Store. Sign in to the account that purchased or claimed MWIII and look for a distinct Modern Warfare III entry. If only an old Call of Duty HQ shortcut is available, search the library for the standalone MWIII listing and install that entry instead.

4. Repair or scan in Battle.net or Microsoft Store
For Battle.net, select the MWIII game page, open its options menu, and use the client’s Scan and Repair control if it is offered. For Microsoft Store installations, use the Windows app-management repair control for the MWIII app, then retry the launch; if repair does not help, reset or reinstall from the Store. 6. Confirm the PC meets current minimum requirements
Activision directs players with persistent PC crashes to check MWIII’s current minimum requirements. Compare the listed operating-system, processor, memory, graphics, storage, and network requirements with the computer, including whether the game is installed on a drive with adequate free space. Requirements can change with patches, so use the current Activision support page for the version and region that apply to you.
7. Close software known to interfere with launch
Before starting MWIII, exit input-remapping software, overlays, recording or streaming utilities, hardware-monitoring overlays, and other nonessential background applications. Restart Windows after closing them so a process that injected into the previous launch is gone. If the game starts, re-enable programs one at a time to identify the conflict; keep the conflicting overlay disabled while playing.
8. Update the graphics driver
Install the current driver version supported for your graphics processor from its official manufacturer channel. Restart Windows after installation, then launch MWIII from the storefront rather than from an old executable shortcut. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, use the manufacturer’s supported rollback option and document both driver versions for support.
9. Reinstall only from the official client

Do not mix launchers or copy files between them. A file verified by one client is not automatically valid for another client’s installation layout or account licensing.
What should I do if the file looks malicious?
Disconnect the PC from online play, leave the suspicious file in quarantine, and run a full scan with the installed security product. Save the file path, signature information, hash, detection name, and the source from which it was obtained.
