nettle-hash.exe is normally the Windows command-line program from the Nettle cryptography package. MSYS2 installs it in its own usr/bin directory and in environment-specific MinGW, UCRT or Clang bin directories; it calculates message digests for files or standard input. That makes a copy in a known MSYS2 installation expected, but the filename alone does not prove that an arbitrary copy is safe. Check the complete path, package source, file reputation and scan results before running or deleting it. Missing-command and missing-DLL errors usually mean that the Nettle package is absent, incomplete or being launched from the wrong MSYS2 environment. The workflow below shows how to identify the copy, check it with Windows Security, restore the official package and decide whether an unfamiliar copy should be quarantined.
What is nettle-hash.exe?
nettle-hash.exe is a command-line message-digest utility. A digest is a fixed-length value calculated from a file or from data received on standard input; it is commonly used to verify that two copies of a file are identical without comparing every byte. The Debian manual describes the program as “nettle-hash – compute message digests.” It supports choosing an algorithm with -a or --algorithm, displaying the available algorithms, truncating output, emitting raw output and showing help or version information.

It is not a core Windows executable. The normal Windows distribution comes from the Nettle package used by MSYS2, a Unix-like development environment for Windows. The package contains the executable and the cryptographic libraries it needs. In the x86_64 MinGW build, the manifest places nettle-hash.exe beside libraries including libnettle-9.dll and libhogweed-7.dll.
Where should a legitimate copy be?
The exact directory depends on the MSYS2 shell or compiler environment that installed it. Typical package-managed locations are:

A path under an MSYS2 installation is useful evidence, not an automatic guarantee. A damaged package, an altered file or a second executable copied into that directory still requires checking.
Is nettle-hash.exe safe?
It can be safe when it is the package-managed Nettle executable from a known MSYS2 installation. A file with the same name in a temporary folder, a browser download, a random writable directory or an unexpected startup location deserves a separate investigation. The name is not a security certificate.
Use four kinds of evidence
- Path: record the complete path, including the drive letter. A location beneath the MSYS2 directory is more plausible than a recently created file in a user-writable temporary directory.
- Provenance: establish which program installed the file. An MSYS2 package installation is materially different from an unexplained download or an executable bundled with unknown software.
- Reputation and signature: Windows SmartScreen can use a downloaded file’s hash and digital-signature reputation. An unknown-reputation warning is a reason to investigate, not a reason to click through automatically. A signature check is one data point; it does not replace a malware scan.
- Behavior and context: an unexpected startup entry, a replacement of a known file, or network activity unrelated to a hashing command increases concern. Those observations describe the local instance, not the official Nettle program.
Microsoft defines malware as malicious software and says Microsoft Defender Antivirus tries to block malware before it can infect a device. Those protections are useful, but no filename-based conclusion can substitute for scanning the actual file.
What a warning means
If SmartScreen blocks a download, do not bypass the warning merely because the filename looks familiar. If Windows Security quarantines the file, treat the alert as a security event first. Review the detection details, update protection intelligence and scan the surrounding system. Do not create a broad antivirus exclusion just to make the alert disappear; an exclusion can allow other files in that location to avoid inspection.
Why does nettle-hash.exe keep appearing?
Repeated appearances usually come from one of three situations: an MSYS2 package or development tool is invoking the utility, a script is finding more than one copy on PATH, or an unfamiliar copy is being recreated by another program. The only reliable way to distinguish them is to capture the path and the process context each time.
An MSYS2 command or build script is using it
Package managers, build systems and verification scripts can call a hashing utility without opening a visible window. If the path is under the MSYS2 tree and the event occurs while you are updating packages, compiling software or checking a download, that is consistent with legitimate use. Updating the matching package keeps the executable and its libraries together.

Several environments are on PATH
MSYS, MinGW, UCRT64 and Clang64 each have their own bin directory. Putting several of them on the Windows system path can make a shell select an unexpected copy or pair an executable with incompatible libraries. Keep the environment-specific path in the shell that needs it, and use the command-resolution checks below to see which file is actually selected.

An unknown program is recreating it
A copy outside MSYS2 that returns after deletion may be bundled with another application, restored by a scheduled task or written by unwanted software. Preserve the detection name, creation time and full path before deleting anything, then scan the file and inspect the process or task that created it. Do not assume persistence solely because the file name is familiar.
How do I find which nettle-hash.exe Windows is running?
Start by resolving every copy, not just the first one returned by a shell. Use an elevated or ordinary PowerShell window as appropriate for the location you are inspecting.
- List all command matches. Run
Get-Command nettle-hash.exe -All. PowerShell reports each command it can resolve and the path selected first. If it returns nothing, the executable is not on that PowerShell session’sPATH, even if it exists somewhere on disk. - Inspect each file. For every path, run
Get-Item 'C:fullpathnettle-hash.exe' | Select-Object FullName,Length,CreationTime,LastWriteTime. A recent timestamp in a download or temporary directory calls for more scrutiny than a long-established file in the MSYS2 installation. - Calculate a local hash. Run
Get-FileHash 'C:fullpathnettle-hash.exe' -Algorithm SHA256and save the result with the path and date. The hash lets you compare copies and retain an exact identifier when discussing a detection with the software publisher or security support. - Check the Authenticode result. Run
Get-AuthenticodeSignature 'C:fullpathnettle-hash.exe'. Read the status, signer and certificate information if present. An unsigned result does not by itself prove malware, particularly for open-source distributions, but it removes one possible source of reassurance. - Record the context. Note whether the file was launched by an MSYS2 shell, a build tool, a game or application launcher, a scheduled task or a startup entry. A hashing command that runs only during a known package operation has a different risk profile from an executable that starts at every logon.
How do I fix a nettle-hash.exe error?
Match the remedy to the symptom. Scan an unexpected file before repairing it, and reinstall the official package rather than downloading a replacement executable from an aggregation site.
1. Capture the exact message and path
Take a screenshot or copy the complete error text. Then run Get-Command nettle-hash.exe -All and inspect the path as described above. The distinction between “not found,” “missing DLL” and “blocked or quarantined” determines the next step.
2. Update Windows Security and scan
Open Windows Security, choose Virus & threat protection, open Protection updates and select Check for updates. After the intelligence update, use Scan options to run a Custom scan on the directory containing the executable. A Full scan is appropriate when the file is unexpected or the warning persists; choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan when you need an inspection before normal Windows processes load. Save any detection name and affected path.
3. Reinstall Nettle from the matching MSYS2 shell
If the path belongs to MSYS2 and the file is missing, damaged or accompanied by a DLL error, open the shell for that environment and run:
pacman -S nettle
Use the MSYS shell for a file under usr/bin, or the corresponding MinGW, UCRT64 or Clang64 shell for its environment-specific directory. Confirm the package manager’s prompts and allow it to install the executable and its companion libraries from the same repository build. Do not copy a DLL from a different MSYS2 environment to silence the error; mixed builds are a common cause of loader failures.

4. Repair the environment PATH
In the relevant MSYS2 shell, check that its own usr/bin or environment bin directory appears before unrelated copies. In PowerShell, inspect the current Windows path with $env:Path -split ';'. Remove stale entries only after confirming which applications rely on them, then start a new shell so it receives the corrected path. A shell that was already open will continue using its old environment until restarted.
5. Confirm that the executable and libraries agree
From the matching shell, run nettle-hash --help and nettle-hash --version. A successful help or version response confirms that the command can start and that its immediate libraries are being found. If Windows still reports that a DLL is missing, verify that the executable’s directory and the package’s library directory are from the same environment and package update. The Nettle manifest’s libnettle-9.dll and libhogweed-7.dll illustrate why a missing or mismatched companion library can prevent startup even when the executable itself is present.
6. Test an actual digest operation
Use a file you can recreate or discard, and select an algorithm supported by the installed build. For example, from the MSYS2 shell, run nettle-hash --algorithm sha256 /path/to/test-file. Compare the printed digest with a second trusted calculation if you need to verify the result. Use nettle-hash --help to check the exact algorithm-list, truncation and raw-output options exposed by your version rather than assuming options from another build.
7. Handle a non-MSYS2 copy cautiously
If the executable is outside a known MSYS2 installation, preserve the path, hash and Windows Security detection details. Quarantine it through Windows Security or delete it only after you have recorded the evidence and confirmed that no legitimate application installed it. Then run a full scan, and use Offline scan if the file returns or the alert continues. Reinstall the legitimate parent application from its trusted source if that application genuinely requires the utility.

Can I delete nettle-hash.exe?
Delete it only after you know which software owns the copy. Removing the MSYS2 package file can break scripts, package verification or development tools that call it, while removing an unexplained copy may be the correct containment step after a scan. If you do not use MSYS2 or any application that bundled Nettle, uninstalling that parent software is cleaner than deleting one executable by hand.
When deletion is reasonable
- Windows Security identifies the file and recommends quarantine or removal.
- The file is outside every trusted installation and no legitimate program claims it.
- You have saved the detection details and hash needed for follow-up.
When to reinstall instead
- The path is inside MSYS2 and the command is required by your shell or build process.
- The error is accompanied by missing Nettle or Hogweed DLLs.
- The package manager reports that the file is owned by Nettle and can restore it consistently.
How can I compare two copies safely?
When several files have the same name, compare them as separate objects rather than assuming that one is a duplicate. The following checklist keeps the important differences visible.

A match on one row is not enough to clear a suspicious copy. A file in the right directory can still be altered, and a legitimate bundled copy can reside outside MSYS2. Use the complete set of observations to decide whether to keep, reinstall, quarantine or remove it.

What should I do if the error returns after reinstalling?
If the package is repeatedly reported as missing
Check that you are opening the same MSYS2 environment each time. Installing Nettle in MSYS does not necessarily place the executable in the MinGW64, UCRT64 or Clang64 directory used by another shell. Re-run Get-Command nettle-hash.exe -All from the shell that reports the error and compare its path with the directory you repaired.

Look for duplicate Nettle libraries earlier on the Windows or shell path. A library copied by an unrelated application can be selected before the package-managed version. Remove or isolate the conflicting path only after identifying the application that placed it there, then reinstall the complete Nettle package in the affected environment.
If Windows keeps quarantining the official-looking file
Do not repeatedly restore it without understanding the detection. Record the detection name, submit the file or hash through the security product’s normal review process if appropriate, and scan the entire installation. A broad exclusion hides future changes and can make a genuine compromise harder to detect.
If an unknown copy recreates itself
Use the creation time to correlate the file with Task Manager startup entries, scheduled tasks and the application that was running at that moment. Disconnecting a computer from untrusted networks while you investigate can limit unwanted communication, but preserve evidence before deleting files. Once the responsible software is identified, remove it through its normal uninstaller or follow Windows Security’s remediation instructions.
