nokia.exe is not a unique Windows component with one known identity. The same filename appears in unrelated records: a legacy NOKIA.EXE entry attributed by Solvusoft to Microsoft Developer Network, Nokia PC Suite’s documented NSLauncher.exe startup component, and a separate Nokia.exe record in %AppData%Yahoo that SystemLookup labels an infostealer-trojan. Treat the file as unknown until you verify its full path, publisher, digital signature, hash, and parent program. If Windows Security flags it or the copy is unexpected, isolate the PC, scan it, and remove the associated software. If it belongs to software you installed, repair that parent program rather than downloading a replacement EXE from a random site.
What is nokia.exe?
nokia.exe is an executable filename, not proof of a particular product or owner. Windows can display the same name for files created by different programs, and a filename can also be copied or renamed by unwanted software. That is why an error dialog alone cannot tell you whether the file is legitimate, obsolete, damaged or malicious.

Several third-party records illustrate the ambiguity:
| Record | What it reports | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
NOKIA.EXE |
Solvusoft lists an entry attributed to Microsoft Developer Network. | It does not establish that every file with this name is a Microsoft file or a current Windows component. |
NSLauncher.exe |
BleepingComputer documents this as a Nokia PC Suite startup component. | It is not evidence that a generic nokia.exe is the official Nokia PC Suite executable. |
Nokia.exe in %AppData%Yahoo |
SystemLookup lists a separate record under that path as an infostealer-trojan entry. | The record does not prove that every Nokia.exe, or every file in an AppData folder, is malicious. |
Microsoft’s safety guidance is the right starting point: “Not all uncommon programs are malicious, but the risk in the unknown category is higher for the typical user.” In practice, the file’s location and relationship to software you intentionally installed matter more than the spelling of its name.

Is nokia.exe safe?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer. A copy in a trusted installation directory, with a valid signature matching software you installed, may be harmless; an unexplained copy in a user-writable folder, a new startup command, or a file that Defender detects requires malware triage.
Use all of these indicators together:
- Full path: note the drive and every folder. A location under the expected program’s installation directory is easier to explain than an unexplained file in
%AppData%,%Temp%, Downloads or a random startup folder. - Publisher and signature: the Company, Product name, File description, version and Digital Signatures fields should agree with the parent application you knowingly installed. A name containing “Nokia” is not a signature.
- Parent program: identify the shortcut, startup command or installed application that launches the process. If you cannot identify one, raise the risk level.
- Security result: a current Microsoft Defender detection, repeated quarantine, or suspicious network and startup behavior takes priority over a plausible-looking filename.
- User intent: ask whether you installed the associated software yourself. An old phone-sync utility that you no longer need should be removed even if its file is not malware.
Do not run, replace or upload an unexplained executable merely to make an error disappear. Microsoft recommends downloading applications only from trusted sources and notes that unknown software carries greater risk for typical users.

How do I identify the exact nokia.exe file?
Identify the copy before deleting or repairing anything. These steps work whether the error appears while a program is open or during Windows startup.

- Open the file’s location. If the process is running, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, find the process, right-click it and choose Open file location. If it is not running, inspect the error dialog, desktop shortcut or startup entry that names the command. Record the complete path.
- Read the file properties. In File Explorer, right-click the EXE, choose Properties, and record the Company, Product name, File description and File version. On the Digital Signatures tab, select a signature and choose Details. A valid signature should identify a publisher that matches the software you intended to install; an absent or invalid signature is a warning, not automatic proof of malware.
- Check how it starts. In Task Manager’s Startup apps tab, inspect the entry and its startup impact, then right-click and choose Open file location or Search online only as an information aid. For a deeper inventory, use Microsoft’s Autoruns utility after scanning. Look at the command line, not just the displayed name.
- Record a SHA-256 hash if you need to compare copies. Open Command Prompt, change the path to the actual file and run
certutil -hashfile "C:pathnokia.exe" SHA256. Keep the resulting hash with the path and version. Compare it only with documentation or an installer supplied by the parent vendor; a matching filename by itself is not a match. - Identify the parent application. Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps and the shortcut’s Target field. A Nokia-related entry may be old phone software, while a copy launched by an unrelated application or by a random script needs separate investigation.
Do not infer safety from a single field. A file can have a convincing name but an unexpected path, or a plausible path but no valid publisher signature.
What should I do if Windows Security flags nokia.exe?
Stop treating the message as an ordinary application error. Use Microsoft Defender’s remediation workflow first, then remove the associated program only after you have recorded the file’s location and identity.
- Stop launching the file. Close the program that invokes it. If you see suspicious behavior, repeated pop-ups, unknown accounts or unexplained network activity, disconnect the PC from Wi-Fi or Ethernet while you investigate.
- Update security intelligence. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates and choose Check for updates. A scan made with old definitions can miss a recently identified threat.
- Run a Full scan. In Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, select Full scan. Allow it to finish and follow the action Windows recommends for any detection.
- Use Microsoft Defender Offline when the detection returns. From the same Scan options page, choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Windows restarts into a separate scanning environment, so save work first and keep the PC connected to power.
- Isolate and use Safe Mode if an active infection is suspected. Microsoft’s threat-response guidance includes isolating the device, starting in Safe Mode, running full and Offline scans, and reviewing auto-start locations with Autoruns. That procedure is general incident response; it does not mean that every
nokia.execase belongs to the specific WinLNK threat family described in that guidance. - Remove the unwanted parent software. After scanning, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select software you do not recognize or no longer need, choose Uninstall, and restart. Do not remove a shared component blindly if other applications depend on it.
If Defender cannot clean the file, the process reappears after restart, or the PC shows signs of account or browser compromise, use a separate trusted computer to change important passwords and obtain professional incident-response help. Do not restore a quarantined file simply because an application complains about it.

How do I fix a “nokia.exe not found” or “cannot find NOKIA.EXE” error?
These messages commonly mean that a shortcut or startup command still points to a program that has been moved, uninstalled or damaged. Confirm that the missing file is not a security detection before rebuilding anything.
Remove an orphaned startup command
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and select Startup apps.
- For an entry that names
nokia.exe, right-click and choose Disable. Record its publisher and command before changing it. - Restart Windows. If the error is gone and you have confirmed that the parent software is no longer installed, remove the orphaned entry with Autoruns or the parent program’s own uninstaller. Do not delete entries solely because they contain the word “Nokia.”
If the entry belongs to a program you still use, reinstall that program instead of leaving its startup component disabled.
Repair software you intentionally installed
- Identify the parent application from the shortcut target, startup command and Installed apps list.
- Check the vendor’s documentation for the exact product and version. Legacy Nokia software can use names that differ from the generic filename; BleepingComputer’s Nokia PC Suite record, for example, refers to
NSLauncher.exe. - Uninstall the damaged or obsolete parent program, restart, and install it again only from the vendor’s trusted site or your original installation media.
- Test the application before re-enabling optional startup behavior. If the same error returns, capture the full path, version, signature and Event Viewer details rather than downloading a replacement EXE from a file-collection site.
Check a shortcut that points to the wrong path
Right-click the shortcut, choose Properties, and inspect Target and Start in. Remove a shortcut that points to a deleted directory only after checking that it is not a legitimate launcher for software you still use. Create a new shortcut from the repaired application rather than editing an unknown command into an existing one.

How do I fix “nokia.exe has stopped working” or repeated crashes?
A crash can result from a damaged parent installation, an incompatible legacy component, a missing shared file or a malicious process. Work from least destructive checks to a clean reinstall.
- Capture the crash details. Open Event Viewer, go to Windows Logs > Application, and inspect the event at the crash time. Note the faulting application, faulting module, exception code and path. These details help distinguish the parent program from a similarly named file.
- Try the application’s repair option. In Settings > Apps > Installed apps, open the application’s menu if Windows offers Repair or Modify. Use Reset only when you understand that it may remove local settings or cached data.
- Check compatibility for legacy software. Right-click the parent application, choose Properties > Compatibility, and use the compatibility troubleshooter only for software you have identified and trust. Compatibility settings cannot make an unsigned or suspicious executable safe.
- Reinstall from a trusted source. Uninstall the parent application, restart, and reinstall the exact product version from its vendor. Avoid “DLL fixer” and “EXE repair” download pages; they can provide unrelated or unsafe binaries.
- Repair Windows components only if other applications also fail. Open an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt and run
sfc /scannow. If Windows reports component-store problems, runDISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, restart, and test again. These commands repair Windows components; they do not validate a third-partynokia.exe.
If only one legacy application crashes while the rest of Windows is stable, replacing that application is usually safer than changing system files. If many unrelated programs fail, investigate broader Windows corruption or hardware problems instead of focusing on the filename.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should I delete nokia.exe?
Delete or quarantine the file only when a security product identifies it, the parent software is unwanted, or you have confirmed that it is an orphan left behind by an uninstalled program. First record its path, properties and hash so you can explain what changed or restore the correct application later.

Do not manually delete a signed file from a program you still use merely because its name looks unusual. Uninstall the parent application through Windows, let Defender handle confirmed malware, and restart. If a file is locked, do not bypass the lock with an unknown utility; use Safe Mode or the security product’s remediation workflow.
How can I prevent the error from returning?
- Keep Windows and Defender security intelligence current.
- Install applications and updates from the software vendor or Microsoft Store rather than random download pages.
- Keep a record of legacy utilities you install, including their version and installation folder.
- Review Startup apps after uninstalling software so orphaned commands do not remain.
- Keep backups of personal files before removing an unfamiliar program or running a major repair.
- When a warning appears, preserve the full path and publisher information; troubleshooting a precise file is safer than searching only for its filename.
The filename alone cannot establish legitimacy. The decisive evidence is the combination of location, signature, hash, parent program, persistence and Defender result.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make nokia.exe safe by renaming it?
No. Renaming changes the path the parent program expects and can hide useful evidence without removing persistence or malware. Preserve the original name while you identify the publisher, path and parent application.
Will a clean boot help diagnose this error?
A clean boot can show whether another startup service is conflicting with the parent program. Use Microsoft’s System Configuration workflow, disable non-Microsoft services temporarily, restart, and then re-enable items in groups; do not use a clean boot as a substitute for a Defender scan when the file is suspicious.
What if Defender quarantines the file and my old program will not start?
Leave the file quarantined until you verify the parent application and its signature. Reinstall the application from its trusted installer instead of restoring an unverified executable; restore a quarantine item only when you have strong evidence it is a false positive.
Recommended Free Tools
Could a game launcher legitimately contain a file called nokia.exe?
It is possible for any application to choose an arbitrary filename, but the name alone provides no legitimacy. Check the launcher’s installation path, signed publisher and installer records, and treat an unexplained copy in a user-writable folder as a separate security question.
