novalauncher.exe is a filename, not a unique Windows component. Public malware records show different files with that name: one hash was detected as Ransom.Wacatac, while another, unrelated hash was reported clean. You cannot decide whether your copy is safe from its name alone. Check its full path, publisher signature, cryptographic hash, installation source and the result from an up-to-date security scan. If Microsoft Defender flags the exact file, quarantine it, run a Full scan and, if it persists, use Microsoft Defender Offline. If the file belongs to a program you deliberately installed and is not detected, repair or reinstall that parent application from its official source instead of downloading another EXE.

What is novalauncher.exe?

novalauncher.exe (also shown as NovaLauncher.exe) is simply the name of an executable file. Windows does not assign one universal meaning, publisher or hash to that name. Different developers, game launchers, bundled installers or malicious programs can use identical filenames.

Public records demonstrate why attribution matters. ThreatInfo lists a NovaLauncher.exe sample with MD5 ad458eea1fbc652f909560759fc058c9, company metadata reading “Projecy Nova,” and a Ransom.Wacatac detection dated 2023-03-17. ThreatInfo also lists a related NovaLauncher.dll sample reported as Trojan.Agent. Separately, GridinSoft analyzed a 152,576-byte file with SHA-256 1b559687e555d6a3d13cb3a32cba23df5932ba16c6df594a6ca9ac6b30462f3e and reported a 0% detection rate in a scan whose database timestamp was 2025-12-03 17:00:35 UTC.

Those are different hashes and therefore different binaries. The clean report does not clear the file that was detected, and the detection does not prove that every file named novalauncher.exe is malicious. No evidence establishes one official Windows component, universal vendor installer or canonical hash for the filename.

Is novalauncher.exe safe?

Only an identity check on your specific file can answer that. Treat an unexpected copy as unknown until you establish where it came from, who signed it, what its hash is and what current security tools report.

  • More reassuring evidence: the file is inside a program you intentionally installed, has a valid signature from a publisher you recognize, matches the program’s expected files and is not flagged by current security software.
  • Warning signs: it launches from a temporary folder, a randomly named directory, an unusual location in a user profile or a startup entry you do not recognize; it is unsigned or signed by an unknown publisher; it appeared after a bundled download; or Defender identifies the exact file.
  • What a web verdict means: an online result applies to a particular hash, not to every file sharing the same name. A different hash, size or signature requires a separate assessment.

Do not run an unfamiliar copy again while investigating. If a trusted scanner has already quarantined it, do not restore it merely because the filename looks familiar.

How do I identify the exact novalauncher.exe file?

Work from the file itself rather than from search results. The following sequence records the evidence needed to decide whether to keep, repair, uninstall or remove it.

  1. Locate the file from the process

Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. On the Details or Processes tab, right-click NovaLauncher.exe and choose Open file location. Copy the complete path. A known application directory is easier to attribute than a temporary or random folder, but location alone is not proof of safety.

  2. Check the installed application

Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows). Look for the program that installed the executable and note its installation date. In the file’s Properties dialog, inspect the Details and Digital Signatures tabs for product, company and signer information.

  3. Inspect the Authenticode signature in PowerShell

    Open PowerShell and run:

    Get-AuthenticodeSignature -FilePath "C:pathnovalauncher.exe"

Replace the path with the one you recorded. Microsoft’s Get-AuthenticodeSignature cmdlet reports signature status and certificate information. A blank signer or an UnknownError status means the file is not established as trusted; it does not by itself prove malware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  4. Verify the signature with SignTool when available

    With Microsoft SignTool installed, run:

    signtool verify /pa "C:pathnovalauncher.exe"

The /pa option checks the default authentication policy. Successful verification indicates that the signed file has not been altered since signing and that its certificate chains to a trusted source. Check the certificate subject and chain, not just whether a green status appears.

  5. Calculate a hash

    In PowerShell, run:

    Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 -Path "C:pathnovalauncher.exe"

Record the resulting SHA-256 value and file size. You can also use Sysinternals Sigcheck to display version data, timestamps, certificate-chain details and (where configured) VirusTotal status. Compare your exact hash with any report you consult. The ThreatInfo MD5 and GridinSoft SHA-256 values above belong to different public samples; a mismatch means neither verdict directly applies to your file.

  6. Stop if provenance remains unclear

If no recognizable parent program, publisher or installation source exists, do not launch the executable again. Preserve the path and hash for the security scan and remove it only through the remediation steps below, so that related startup entries and components are also addressed.

What should I do if Microsoft Defender detects novalauncher.exe?

A current Defender detection is the highest-priority evidence in this process. Handle it as a security incident first, then investigate which program delivered the file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Update security intelligence

Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection. Under Virus & threat protection updates, select Check for updates and allow the intelligence update to finish.

  2. Run a Full scan

In Scan options, select Full scan and start it. A Full scan is appropriate when infection is suspected because it checks all accessible files and running processes rather than only common locations.

  3. Quarantine the exact detection

Open Protection history, select the alert for the matching path and choose Quarantine or Remove. Do not choose Allow on device simply because the filename resembles a launcher. If the alert disappears after remediation, keep the recorded path and hash in case the file returns.

  4. Use Microsoft Defender Offline for persistence

If the file reappears, cannot be removed, or you suspect a rootkit or interference during normal Windows operation, start Microsoft Defender Offline scan from Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options. Windows will restart and scan outside the normal Windows kernel. You can also start it from an elevated PowerShell prompt with:

Save work first because the command restarts the computer. Windows 10 and 11 include the built-in workflow. Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 use the Microsoft Defender Offline boot-media procedure, which requires creating CD, DVD or USB media.

  5. Remove the unwanted parent program

If the file arrived with a bundled installer or an application you do not want, uninstall that application through Settings > Apps. Potentially unwanted applications are not necessarily malware, but they may show unwanted advertising, offer additional programs or consume system resources unexpectedly. Removing only the EXE can leave startup entries, scheduled tasks or broken dependencies.

  6. Protect accounts if exposure is plausible

If the suspicious program had access to passwords, payment details or other sensitive information, use a known-clean device to change affected passwords and contact the relevant provider. This is a prudent response to possible exposure, not proof that every NovaLauncher file is malicious.

How do I fix a novalauncher.exe launch error when it is not malware?

If the file is inside an application you intentionally installed, has a recognizable valid signature and is not flagged by current security tools, treat the problem as an application failure. Repair the parent program rather than replacing the executable from an unverified download page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the application’s built-in repair option

Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the parent application, choose Advanced options when available, then try Repair. Repair preserves user data in many applications while restoring missing or damaged program files. If Repair does not help, use Reset only after checking what data the application stores locally, because Reset can remove settings or cached content.

Update from the official publisher

Install updates through the application’s own updater or the publisher’s official download channel. Do not obtain a replacement novalauncher.exe from a generic DLL repository, “fixer” site or random software mirror. A replacement binary can be tampered with, incompatible with the installed build or impossible to attribute later.

Reinstall cleanly

Uninstall the parent application from Windows Settings, restart Windows, then reinstall the current version from its official source. If the uninstaller offers to keep profiles or saved games, decide before proceeding. After reinstalling, verify that the new executable is in the expected application directory and rescan it.

Check dependencies and Windows integrity

A launch failure can result from a missing shared DLL, damaged application files, blocked permissions or a recent update. Follow the parent program’s documented requirements and error guidance. For broader Windows corruption, run the built-in System File Checker and Deployment Image Servicing and Management tools from an elevated Command Prompt only when the error points to Windows components; these tools do not validate an unknown third-party executable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review startup and scheduled tasks

If the error appears at every sign-in after you uninstall an application, open Task Manager > Startup apps and inspect Task Scheduler for entries pointing to the old path. Disable or remove entries you can attribute to the uninstalled program, but preserve unfamiliar entries until you have checked their publisher and path. Deleting the EXE alone can create repeated “file not found” messages without removing the trigger.

Can I delete novalauncher.exe?

Do not make the decision from the filename. Choose the action that matches your evidence and whether the parent application is wanted.

Evidence and situation Safer action Reason
Defender identifies the exact file or it returns after removal Quarantine, run a Full scan and use Defender Offline if persistence continues Security remediation addresses related components instead of leaving a startup trigger behind
File belongs to a wanted application, has a recognized signer and is not detected Use the application’s Repair, Reset, update or reinstall option The parent installer can restore matching files and dependencies
File belongs to an unwanted application Uninstall the application through Windows Settings, then rescan Uninstalling can remove services, startup entries and dependencies that direct deletion misses
No recognizable application, signer or installation source Do not launch it; preserve the path and hash while scanning and investigating An unknown binary cannot be safely cleared by its name alone

Deleting a single executable is especially risky when an application is still installed: it can leave broken shortcuts, services and scheduled tasks, and a later installer repair may restore the same file. Conversely, leaving a detected file in place because it “looks like a launcher” is not a safe compromise.

Why does novalauncher.exe keep crashing?

Repeated crashes generally fall into two branches. A malicious or unwanted process may be blocked, partially removed or attempting to persist; a legitimate application may have damaged files, incompatible updates or missing dependencies. The path, signature and scanner result determine which branch to follow.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

  • Suspicious path or recurring detection: follow the Defender remediation sequence, including Offline scanning when normal Windows removal is incomplete.
  • Known application and clean scan: repair or reinstall the parent application, then install its official updates.
  • Error began after uninstalling: inspect Startup apps and Task Scheduler for stale references instead of downloading a replacement executable.
  • Error follows a bundled download: uninstall the associated unwanted program and review recently installed software for other components.

Keep the exact error text, event time and file path. Those details help the application publisher or a support technician distinguish a missing dependency from a blocked or replaced binary.

What mistakes should I avoid?

  • Do not assume a familiar filename is a Microsoft component or a game launcher.
  • Do not apply a web verdict for one hash to a different file.
  • Do not restore a quarantined file solely because an application stopped working.
  • Do not download a “clean” replacement EXE or DLL from an unofficial site.
  • Do not use a generic DLL fixer or registry cleaner to solve an attribution problem; it can replace files and make the original cause harder to establish.
  • Do not delete only the executable when the parent application is unwanted; remove the application so its startup mechanisms are handled too.

Frequently asked questions

Does a valid digital signature guarantee that novalauncher.exe is safe?

No. A valid signature supports file integrity and identifies the signer, but a signed program can still be unwanted, compromised after release or inappropriate for your computer. Confirm that the signer matches the application you intended to install and combine the result with the path, hash and current scan.

What does a 0% detection rate mean for a NovaLauncher sample?

It means the cited scanner found no detections for that particular SHA-256 file at the stated scan time. It does not certify other files with the same name, and detection databases can change as new samples are analyzed.

Should I upload the file to an online scanner?

Only if your organization permits it and the file contains no confidential code or data. Uploading can disclose the binary to a third party; recording its local hash and using your installed security tools first avoids that privacy issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will Defender Offline remove every NovaLauncher problem?

It is designed to scan outside the normal Windows environment and is useful for persistent threats or rootkit concerns, but it does not repair a legitimate application’s damaged files or missing dependencies. A clean Offline result sends you back to the parent application’s repair or reinstall process.

What should I preserve before uninstalling the parent application?

Back up saved games, profiles, configuration files and license information according to the application’s documentation. Record the executable path, hash, alert name and installation date so you can explain what happened if the file returns after reinstalling.

If you want an optional shortcut after checking the file manually, Outbyte PC Repair can look for common Windows issues, adjust resource-heavy settings, clean temporary and cache files, check selected Windows vulnerabilities and provide tools such as a real-time boost, file shredder and app-crash log. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary, and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, with a free trial by category of at least two days followed by a paid subscription.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a game launcher legitimately use the name novalauncher.exe?

Yes, an intentionally installed game or utility could use that filename, but the name itself does not establish legitimacy. Verify the parent application, signer and hash before allowing it through security controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why do two security websites disagree about NovaLauncher.exe?

The reports concern different binaries: the ThreatInfo record uses MD5 ad458eea1fbc652f909560759fc058c9, while the GridinSoft record uses SHA-256 1b559687e555d6a3d13cb3a32cba23df5932ba16c6df594a6ca9ac6b30462f3e. Different hashes can legitimately produce different results.

What if the file comes back after I delete it?

A scheduled task, startup entry, service or parent installer may be recreating it. Quarantine the detected file, run a Full scan and then Microsoft Defender Offline; afterward inspect recently installed applications and startup mechanisms.

Can I fix the error by downloading novalauncher.dll?

Avoid replacement DLL downloads from unofficial sites. Repair or reinstall the known parent application from its official source so matching executable and library files are restored together.
