nvgwls.exe is a Windows executable associated with NVIDIA display-driver packages. A legitimate copy is commonly stored under an NVIDIA DriverStore Display.NvContainer directory, but the filename alone cannot establish that a file is safe. Different files with this name have received different third-party verdicts, so you must check the exact path, hash, signature, installation source and behavior.
If the file is unexpected, unsigned, detected by Windows Security or located in a temporary or user-profile folder, scan it before doing anything else. nvgwls.exe is an executable distributed with some NVIDIA display-driver packages. On a normal installation, it is commonly found below the Windows DriverStore in a path containing Display.NvContainer. The DriverStore location is controlled by Windows and the NVIDIA package, so the exact folder name can vary with the driver version.
The name is not a certificate of authenticity. Malware, unwanted programs or a damaged copy can use the same filename. Treat the file as an individual object: record its complete path, inspect its publisher and signature, calculate its hash, and scan that exact file. A file in an expected NVIDIA directory with a valid signature is stronger evidence than a file with the same name in a download, temporary or user-profile folder, but no single check should be treated as conclusive.

What does the file do?
The executable is part of the NVIDIA display-driver software stack. That means a failure can appear as a graphics-driver problem rather than a standalone application error: games may stop responding, the display driver may restart, Device Manager may show a code, or Windows may block an upgrade because of driver compatibility. The executable itself is not a reason to remove the entire NVIDIA driver package.
Is nvgwls.exe safe?
Safety depends on the particular copy. Digital-signature information, path, hash and scan results must agree before you treat it as trusted. Third-party reputation pages have reported conflicting classifications for different hashes, which is why a verdict attached to one sample must not be generalized to every file named nvgwls.exe.

Microsoft and NVIDIA documentation are more useful for repair decisions than an undifferentiated reputation score. A signature can show who signed a binary and whether it was altered after signing; it does not prove that the file came from your current installation, that the package was obtained from a trustworthy source, or that the process is behaving normally.
How do I check whether my nvgwls.exe copy is genuine?
Work from the exact file that Windows or an error message identified. Do not rely on a search-engine result, a filename-only lookup or a report for a different hash.
- Open the file location. In File Explorer, right-click
nvgwls.exe, choose Properties, and use the General tab to record the complete path, file size and creation or modification dates. A path under the Windows DriverStore containingDisplay.NvContaineris consistent with an NVIDIA display-driver installation. A temporary folder, a random download directory, a user-profile subfolder or a DriverMax restore location deserves additional scrutiny. - Check version and publisher metadata. On the Details tab, record the file description, product name, version and original filename if those fields are present. Missing or implausible metadata does not prove malware, but it removes useful evidence.
- Verify the signature. On the Digital Signatures tab, select the signer and choose Details. Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature and note the signer name. A report that names NVIDIA Corporation and Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher is evidence about the signer of that exact file, not a guarantee about every file named nvgwls.exe.
- Calculate the hash locally. Open PowerShell and run
Get-FileHash "C:pathtonvgwls.exe" -Algorithm MD5, replacing the example path with the recorded path. Compare the resulting 32-character digest only with a report for the same hash. A different digest means you are looking at a different sample, even when the filename and version appear identical. - Scan the file and the system. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection. Start Quick scan, then use Scan options for a Full scan or a targeted Custom scan of the folder. If the file is unexpected, repeatedly detected or still present after a normal scan, select Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan). Microsoft says the offline scan uses the latest definitions to scan the device for the latest threats; Windows restarts to perform it.
- Review the result. Check Protection history for the detection name, affected path, action and quarantine status. Keep the path and hash with the record if you need to compare a later driver installation or ask the graphics-card vendor for help.
Do not add a Windows Security exclusion merely to suppress a warning. Microsoft warns that exclusions can leave the device and data vulnerable. Likewise, do not download a replacement nvgwls.exe from an untrusted DLL or EXE site: you cannot establish its provenance by matching the filename.

- Run Windows Security Quick scan, followed by Full scan or Defender Offline when the file is persistent, detected again or located outside the expected NVIDIA package directory.
- Use Protection history to identify the exact path and detection. Quarantine or remove the item through Windows Security after confirming that the alert refers to this file, rather than deleting a similarly named file manually.
- Preserve the path, hash, signature details and detection name before removal if you may need technical support or want to compare the file with an NVIDIA package.
- After cleanup, install the display driver only through Windows Update, Device Manager or NVIDIA’s official driver search for the exact graphics processor and Windows version. Do not restore the quarantined executable simply because a game reports that a file is missing.
How do I fix nvgwls.exe display-driver errors?
When the file is in a known NVIDIA installation and scans are clean, repair the display driver rather than deleting nvgwls.exe. Choose the least destructive option that matches when the symptoms began.
1. Check Windows Update first
Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install available driver and cumulative updates, restart, and test the application that failed. Windows Update is a preferable source when it offers a driver for the installed GPU because Windows can match it to the current edition and build.
2. Inspect Device Manager
Right-click Start, open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, and open the NVIDIA adapter’s Properties. The General tab shows a device status message and any code; the Driver tab shows the provider, date and version.
For a normal update, choose Update driver > Search automatically for drivers. If you already downloaded the correct package from NVIDIA, choose Browse my computer for drivers and point Windows to that package’s extracted folder. Match the GPU model and Windows version exactly; a package for another model can create a new failure even when installation completes.

3. Roll back after a bad update
If crashes, black screens or timeouts started immediately after a driver update, open the adapter’s Properties > Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver when the button is available. Choose a reason, confirm, restart and test again. Microsoft notes that returning to a previous display-driver version can solve issues introduced by an update. Rollback is reversible and should normally be attempted before uninstalling a working package.
4. Reinstall a corrupted driver
Microsoft recommends reinstalling the display driver when earlier steps do not work. In Device Manager, right-click the NVIDIA adapter and choose Uninstall device. Read the confirmation carefully; if Windows offers a checkbox to remove the driver software, select it only when you intend to replace the package and have a known-good driver source ready. Restart, then install the matching package through Windows Update, Device Manager or NVIDIA’s official driver search.
A clean reinstall is appropriate when the driver is corrupted, the device cannot load, or repeated updates leave the same error. It does not require manually deleting nvgwls.exe from DriverStore.
5. Resolve Device Manager Code 31
Code 31 means Windows cannot load the drivers required for the device. Reinstall the device driver: open the NVIDIA adapter in Device Manager, use Uninstall device, restart, and install the correct current package. If Windows reinstalls a basic display driver, use Windows Update or NVIDIA’s official package to complete the installation.
6. Resolve Device Manager Code 32
Code 32 indicates that a driver service has been disabled. Uninstall the affected device in Device Manager, restart if prompted, then open the Action menu and select Scan for hardware changes. Windows can rediscover the adapter and reinstall its driver; if it does not, provide the matching driver package through Update driver.

7. Handle a Windows 11 upgrade compatibility hold
Windows 11 can place a compatibility hold when an NVIDIA display driver is known to cause upgrade problems. Install a newer NVIDIA display driver through Windows Update, Device Manager or the official NVIDIA package, restart, and check for the upgrade again. Do not bypass the hold by deleting the executable; the driver package, not the filename, is what must be updated.
8. Respond to blue screens and display timeouts
Write down the complete stop code and the time of the crash. Install current Windows and vendor driver updates, then follow Microsoft’s stop-error guidance. Microsoft specifically directs users to the display-driver vendor for VIDEO_ENGINE_TIMEOUT_DETECTED and VIDEO_TDR_TIMEOUT_DETECTED. Those codes point to a graphics timeout, but they do not by themselves prove that nvgwls.exe is malware.
9. Reset the graphics stack for a transient hang
For a one-time black screen or a display that briefly stops responding, save work if possible and restart Windows after the driver update or rollback. Windows also provides the keyboard reset Win + Ctrl + Shift + B, which can refresh the display stack without uninstalling the driver. If hangs return, continue with the version check, rollback or reinstall rather than repeatedly resetting the screen.

Can I delete nvgwls.exe?
Do not delete it by filename alone. If it is part of the NVIDIA DriverStore package, manual deletion can leave the display driver incomplete and make later repairs harder. First identify the owning package, verify the file and scan it.
If Windows Security confirms a threat, use its quarantine or removal action and then reinstall a clean display driver from a trusted source. If the file is legitimate but damaged, uninstall and reinstall the NVIDIA display driver through Device Manager or Windows Update. Removing one executable from the DriverStore is not a substitute for uninstalling the package in a controlled way.

A blocklist decision concerns the driver package and its security characteristics; it is not a statement that every executable bearing the nvgwls.exe name is malicious.
