Why the filename is not an identity check
Windows identifies an executable by its contents, signature and location, not by a text string in its name. Malware can be named after a legitimate program, and a legitimate updater can leave an obsolete file behind. Microsoft defines malware as malicious software and recommends obtaining applications from trusted sources and scanning suspicious files rather than trusting their names.
Is old_4589_overwolf.exe safe?

Record the file details before changing anything
- In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, and note its location, size, creation and modification dates and the values on the Details tab.

- Calculate a SHA-256 hash in PowerShell. Replace the path with the one you recorded:

When deletion is usually the safer choice
- The file is in an unexpected directory, has no valid publisher signature, and is detected by Defender or multiple reputable scanners.
- Overwolf has already been uninstalled and the file is a leftover outside the active installation.
- An official reinstall creates a new executable while the old copy remains unused, and your security scans show the old copy is not required.
Quarantine a suspicious copy first rather than permanently deleting it immediately. If a security product flags it, follow that product’s remediation instructions and keep the detection record. Do not restore the file merely because Overwolf reports that a component is missing.
When you should not delete it manually

- Open Settings and go to Windows Update.
- Install all available updates, including required restarts. Repeat the check until Windows reports that it is up to date.
- Restart the PC, then test Overwolf before changing its files.
Updating first matters because Overwolf lists outdated Windows components as a cause of launch failures. If the error appears immediately after an update, record the update date and the exact message before continuing.
2. Repair Windows with SFC and DISM

sfc /scannowAllow the scan to reach 100 percent. If SFC reports that it could not repair all files, or if corruption is suspected, run the Deployment Image Servicing and Management checks in this order:

3. Confirm the required Windows baseline and .NET Framework
Check that the system is running 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11, has at least 350 MB of free storage, and includes .NET Framework 4.8. Windows 7 and 8 may still exist on older PCs, but they are not the current compatibility baseline described by Overwolf.
If .NET Framework 4.8 is damaged, use Windows’ installed-app repair option where available or reinstall it from Microsoft’s official .NET distribution. Restart after the repair and test the Overwolf client again. Avoid downloading a replacement DLL or runtime from a file-sharing site.
4. Check security and conflicting software without weakening protection permanently

5. Run the official Overwolf Troubleshooter
- Open the Overwolf troubleshooter supplied by Overwolf Support.
- Allow it to detect the installation and select its recommended fixes.
- If the problem remains, use the option to create a logs ZIP.
- Keep the archive with the file path, hash, Windows version and exact error text when contacting support.
The logs can distinguish a missing component from a blocked process or failed update. Include the original detection details rather than paraphrasing them.
6. Update an existing installation with the official setup ZIP

The file is missing and Overwolf will not start
Do not download a similarly named executable from a search result. Run Windows repair checks, confirm the prerequisites, and use the official setup ZIP or a clean reinstall. If a freshly installed copy is detected again, stop launching it and provide the detection name, hash and logs to Overwolf Support and your security vendor.
The file exists outside the Overwolf directory
