What Is old_chrome.exe? Is It Safe, and How to Fix old_chrome.exe Errors on Windows

old_chrome.exe is usually a temporary filename created by Chromium’s Windows updater while Chrome replaces an in-use browser executable. During an update, the running chrome.exe is renamed, moved to a temporary folder, and replaced by the new build; the old process can continue briefly under the temporary name.

The name alone does not prove that a file is safe. A short-lived process that appears during a Chrome update is consistent with Chromium’s documented design, while a persistent, oddly located, unsigned, or unexpected copy should be treated as untrusted until you check its context and scan it. The steps below show how to verify the file, repair startup and update failures, and decide whether deletion is appropriate.

What is old_chrome.exe?

old_chrome.exe is a temporary process name used during a Chromium-based Chrome update on Windows. An updater cannot simply overwrite an executable that is still running. Instead, Chromium’s Windows upgrade utility performs a swap:

  1. It renames the current chrome.exe to old_chrome.exe.
  2. It moves that renamed executable to a temporary folder.
  3. It renames new_chrome.exe to chrome.exe.
  4. The process that was already running continues under the temporary name until it exits.

This explains why the filename can appear briefly in Task Manager, a temporary directory, or a security alert while Chrome is updating. Chromium’s source warns that the old process should not remain the browser process indefinitely because it can create version mismatches. In a normal update, the temporary process disappears after Chrome closes or the update completes.

The mechanism is specific to the updater’s file-swap operation, not a separate Chrome feature that users need to launch. A file named old_chrome.exe can still be copied or imitated by another program, so the filename is only one clue in a safety assessment.

Is old_chrome.exe safe or a virus?

It can be legitimate, but no filename provides a universal safety verdict. If it appeared at the same time as a Chrome update, is located where Chrome’s updater placed it, has the expected digital signature, and passes a current security scan, the behavior is consistent with the documented updater process. If it appeared after downloading a supposedly free browser installer, persists after Chrome is closed, launches at startup, or has no trustworthy publisher information, investigate it as a potentially unwanted or malicious file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Signs that fit a normal Chrome update

  • The process appears for a short period while Chrome is updating or being restarted.
  • Chrome was installed from an official, trusted source and has not recently been replaced by an unknown installer.
  • The file is in a temporary location associated with the update rather than an unrelated user or system folder.
  • Its properties show a valid signature from the expected Chrome publisher.
  • Microsoft Defender and other security tools report no detection.

Warning signs that need investigation

  • The process remains after every reboot or continues when Chrome is not open.
  • There are several copies in unrelated folders, especially a user-downloads or temporary archive folder created by an unfamiliar installer.
  • The file has no signature, an invalid signature, or a publisher you do not recognize.
  • Chrome’s homepage, search engine, extensions, proxy, or notifications changed without your approval.
  • Security software detects the file, or a browser download triggered the appearance of the process.

Microsoft distinguishes clean software, potentially unwanted applications, and malware; the correct response is to verify the source and scan rather than automatically allow or delete a file based on its name. Never create an antivirus exclusion simply because the alert mentions Chrome.

Why is old_chrome.exe running?

The most common reason is an update that started while Chrome was still open. The updater keeps the old process alive under the temporary name so it can finish the swap without interrupting the running browser. Other possibilities include a failed update that left a process behind, Chrome starting invisibly with a damaged profile or extension, or an installer that was not genuine.

When the process is expected

A brief appearance during an update is normal. It should end after you quit Chrome and the updater completes. A restart can also clear a process that remained after a crash or interrupted installation.

When it may indicate a problem

A persistent process can mean that the old browser instance did not exit cleanly, the update could not replace all files, or the installation is being blocked by security software, network controls, parental controls, malware, or an unsupported Windows version. If the process keeps returning without a visible update, use the verification and repair procedures below instead of repeatedly killing it.

How can I check whether an old_chrome.exe copy is genuine?

Use the file’s timing, location, publisher information, and scan results together. Do not rely on any one indicator, including the filename or an apparent Chrome icon.

  1. Record the context. Note when the process appeared, whether Chrome displayed an update or restart prompt, and which folder contains the file. Capture the full path from Task Manager before ending the process.
  2. Inspect the properties. In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, and review the Details and Digital Signatures tabs. The signature should be valid and identify the expected Chrome publisher. An absent or invalid signature is a reason to quarantine and investigate, not proof by itself of malware.
  3. Do not choose Allow automatically. In Windows Security, quarantine blocks a detected file from running while you investigate. Microsoft recommends allowing a detection only when you trust both the software and its publisher.
  4. Update Defender and run a Full scan. Open Windows Security, select Virus & threat protection, choose Protection updates and check for updates, then open Scan options and run Full scan.
  5. Escalate if signs remain. If the file returns, security alerts continue, or browser settings keep changing, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan or Microsoft Safety Scanner. Offline scanning runs outside the normal Windows session, which can help when a process resists removal.
  6. Review related software. Remove an unfamiliar Chrome installer, browser extension, scheduled task, or startup entry that appeared at the same time. Keep extensions that you recognize and obtained from a trusted source only.

Do not run an unknown copy to “see what it does.” If you need a sample for an administrator or security team, preserve the path and file properties while leaving the item quarantined.

How do I fix old_chrome.exe errors when Chrome will not start?

Startup failures are usually repaired by clearing a stuck process, restarting Windows, checking for unwanted software, and then repairing or reinstalling Chrome. Work through these steps in order so you do not remove data unnecessarily.

1. End a stuck Chrome process

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. On the Processes tab, select Google Chrome or chrome.exe. Expand the group if several Chrome processes are listed.
  3. Choose End task and wait a few seconds. If old_chrome.exe is listed separately and Chrome is not updating, end that process too.
  4. Open Chrome again from the normal shortcut.

Ending a process is not a substitute for scanning an unexpected file. If the process immediately returns or the file is detected, leave it quarantined and continue with the security checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Restart Windows

Restarting closes orphaned updater processes and releases files that remained locked after a crash. After signing back in, wait a minute before launching Chrome so a pending update can finish.

3. Reduce startup load

Google’s startup guidance recommends closing unnecessary tabs, extensions, and other applications. If Chrome opens long enough to reach settings, disable extensions you do not need, then relaunch. A damaged extension can prevent the browser from completing startup even when the executable itself is genuine.

4. Check for malware

Run the Defender scans described above before reinstalling. A malicious extension or startup task can recreate browser symptoms after a clean reinstall, so removing only the executable may not solve the cause.

5. Test another browser

Open another installed browser. If every browser fails to reach websites, the issue is more likely to involve Windows networking, a firewall, parental controls, or malware than Chrome’s executable. If only Chrome fails, continue with Chrome-specific repair.

6. Test hardware acceleration

If Chrome opens but crashes when a page or video loads, open Settings, select System, turn off Use hardware acceleration when available, and choose Relaunch. This is a diagnostic step; if stability improves, update the graphics driver and test the setting again later.

7. Reinstall Chrome

Use Google’s official uninstall and reinstall flow. Before uninstalling, decide whether you need to preserve the existing profile, bookmarks, passwords, and browsing data; export or synchronize anything essential. Reinstall the current Windows build, add extensions back one at a time, and test startup before restoring every customization.

How do I fix Chrome update failures connected with old_chrome.exe?

Update failures can leave the old process behind when files are missing or update traffic is blocked. Google lists blocked network access, antivirus or firewall interference, parental controls, malware, unsupported Windows versions, and Compatibility Mode among the causes.

  1. Close Chrome completely. End remaining Chrome processes in Task Manager, then restart Windows.
  2. Reinstall using Google’s standalone Windows installer. This can replace missing or damaged update files when the in-browser updater cannot complete.
  3. Check network controls. Ensure that tools.google.com and dl.google.com are not blocked by a firewall, DNS filter, proxy, parental-control service, or security product. On a managed computer, an administrator may need to change the policy.
  4. Temporarily review security interference. Do not permanently disable protection. Check its event log or allow-list rules for a blocked Chrome update, and restore normal protection immediately after testing.
  5. Scan for unwanted software. Malware can alter update traffic or repeatedly replace browser files. Run a Full scan and, if necessary, Defender Offline or Microsoft Safety Scanner.
  6. Disable Compatibility Mode. Right-click the Chrome shortcut, choose Properties, open Compatibility, clear Run this program in compatibility mode for, select Apply, and try the update again. Compatibility Mode can produce a false unsupported-Windows condition.
  7. Confirm Windows support. Google’s current requirements in the cited update guidance state that Chrome on Windows requires Windows 10 or later and an SSE3-capable Intel Pentium 4 or newer processor. Older Windows editions no longer receive current Chrome versions.

If the standalone installer also fails, save the exact error text and check Windows Event Viewer for installer or application errors. The filename old_chrome.exe does not identify a single error code, so forcing a generic registry change or downloading a replacement executable from a third-party site can make the installation less reliable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I delete old_chrome.exe?

Delete it only after Chrome has closed, no update is in progress, and security checks show that the file is unwanted or leftover. If the updater is actively swapping files, deleting old_chrome.exe can interrupt the transaction and leave Chrome incomplete.

If it is a normal temporary updater file

Quit Chrome, restart Windows, and let the updater finish. A temporary copy should normally disappear without manual deletion. If it remains after a restart but has the expected signature and no security alert, repair or reinstall Chrome rather than deleting random files from its installation folders.

If it is detected or came from an unknown download

Choose Quarantine in Windows Security, remove the associated installer or extension, and review startup tasks and scheduled tasks. Do not restore the item or add an exclusion until you have verified the publisher and source.

If deletion is blocked

Do not take ownership of system folders or use a force-delete utility as a first response. End Chrome, restart into a clean session, run Defender Offline if needed, and use the official uninstall and reinstall process. These steps address both a locked file and a damaged installation without relying on an unverified replacement.

Could a fake Chrome download create an old_chrome.exe problem?

Yes. On 16 August 2024, Singapore’s Cyber Security Agency reported a campaign that used fake Chrome and Edge software sites and malicious extensions. The reported activity included scheduled PowerShell tasks and registry changes that allowed the unwanted components to persist and alter browser settings. This incident report is evidence that attackers may imitate a familiar browser filename; it is not a prevalence estimate and does not mean every old_chrome.exe alert is malicious.

Download Chrome only from a source you already trust, avoid “cracked” or bundled installers, and inspect newly installed extensions. If the suspicious file appeared immediately after such a download, treat the installer, extension, scheduled task, and browser settings as one incident rather than deleting only the executable.

Which repair should I try first?

Choose the path that matches the symptom and the trust context. The table separates startup, update, and security cases so you do not reinstall unnecessarily or allow a suspicious file.

Situation First action Next step if it fails When to involve an administrator
Chrome opens and old_chrome.exe appears briefly during an update Let the update finish, quit Chrome, and restart Windows Use the standalone installer if the process persists Only if a managed firewall or policy blocks the update
Chrome will not open, but no malware indicator exists End chrome.exe in Task Manager and restart Disable extensions, test hardware acceleration, then reinstall If installation rights or corporate policy prevent repair
Defender detects the file or it came from an unfamiliar download Quarantine it and run a Defender Full scan Use Defender Offline or Microsoft Safety Scanner and remove related extensions and tasks For a work or school device, report the event rather than overriding policy
Update reports unsupported Windows Disable Compatibility Mode and confirm Windows 10 or later with SSE3-capable hardware Upgrade Windows or use the supported Chrome installation path When the device cannot be upgraded without organizational approval
All browsers have connection problems Check firewall, proxy, DNS filtering, and parental controls Review malware findings and Windows network settings When network settings are centrally managed
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How can I prevent the problem from returning?

  • Keep Windows and Chrome on supported versions, and restart after an update that requests it.
  • Install Chrome and extensions only from trusted sources; reject installers that bundle unrelated browser components.
  • Keep Microsoft Defender security intelligence current and investigate repeated detections instead of adding exclusions.
  • Remove extensions you no longer use and review startup entries after installing any browser software.
  • On managed computers, ask the administrator to verify update domains, firewall rules, and Compatibility Mode policies.
  • Keep a backup or synchronized copy of important bookmarks and passwords before uninstalling Chrome.

What is not established about old_chrome.exe?

There is no authoritative universal hash list, dedicated catalog of old_chrome.exe-specific error codes, or numeric danger rating that can classify every copy. Chromium documents the updater’s rename-and-swap behavior, while Microsoft and Google document general scanning, startup, and update remedies. Your decision still depends on the file’s source, location, signature, timing, and security-tool results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A persistent or suspicious copy deserves the same caution as any unexpected executable. Use the manual verification, quarantine, scan, and reinstall procedures above instead of assuming that deleting the filename alone will repair Chrome.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, while also offering cleanup, settings adjustments, privacy checks, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding, and crash logging. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; its free trial is offered by category for at least two days before a paid subscription, and it complements an antivirus rather than replacing one. Results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.

FAQ

Why does security software sometimes flag old_chrome.exe during an update?

Renaming a running executable and moving it to a temporary folder resembles behavior used by some unwanted programs, so a security product may inspect it more closely. Check the file’s signature and origin, and keep it quarantined until the scan and publisher checks support restoring it.
