omtsreco.exe is normally the executable for Oracle MTS Recovery Service (OraMTS), an Oracle Database Client component that helps Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MS DTC) recover interrupted distributed transactions. It is not a Windows system file. A copy is credible only when it belongs to an installed Oracle product, sits in the expected Oracle home, carries an Oracle publisher signature, and passes a current security scan. An unsigned copy in an unfamiliar folder, or one detected by security software, may be a malicious file using the same name.
Do not delete the file simply because it crashes. First establish which program installed it and whether an application still needs Oracle transaction recovery. Then repair the Oracle client or OraMTS service, repair Windows components only when evidence points to Windows corruption, and use quarantine and malware scanning when the file fails identity checks.

What is omtsreco.exe?
omtsreco.exe belongs to Oracle MTS Recovery Service, commonly called OraMTS. Oracle Database Client can install this service so applications using Microsoft Transaction Server and Oracle databases can recover transactions that were left unresolved after a failure.
In a distributed transaction, an application may have prepared work in more than one system when the application, network, database, or MS DTC fails. The transaction is then “in doubt”: it is not safe to assume that it committed or rolled back. Oracle describes the recovery service as resolving in-doubt transactions on the computer that started the failed transaction. OraMTS asks MS DTC for the transaction outcome and reports that result to the Oracle recovery process.

Oracle’s installation documentation says that, beginning with Oracle Database 12c, each Oracle home has its own OraMTS recovery Windows service. Therefore, a computer with several Oracle homes can have more than one related service and executable. The file is not part of a standard Windows installation.
Is omtsreco.exe safe?
There is no filename-only answer. Malware can copy the name of a legitimate executable, so “omtsreco.exe” in Task Manager does not prove that the file came from Oracle.

- An Oracle Database Client, Oracle Services for Microsoft Transaction Server, or a business application that uses Oracle distributed transactions is installed.
- The file is inside the Oracle home used by that installation. A historical reference location is
C:oracleora92bin, but Oracle homes vary by release, installation choice, and administrator. - File Properties shows Oracle as the signer or publisher and the Digital Signatures tab reports a valid signature.
- A current, reputable security scan does not detect the file.
Warning signs
- The file appeared even though no Oracle software is installed or expected.
- It runs from a user profile, temporary directory, downloads folder, recycle bin, or another unrelated location.
- The file has no signature, an invalid signature, a misspelled publisher, or a version inconsistent with the installed Oracle client.
- Your security software flags it, or the process makes unexplained changes unrelated to an Oracle application.
Third-party process databases can list Oracle as the vendor and show historical hashes or versions, but those listings are reputation clues, not a verdict about the copy on your computer. Verify the local file’s path, signature, version, and scan result instead.
What errors can omtsreco.exe cause?
Reported symptoms include “Oracle MTS Recovery service has stopped working,” “omtsreco.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close,” and access-violation errors naming the executable. You may also see an Oracle service that repeatedly stops, an application unable to complete a distributed transaction, or an event-log entry when MS DTC starts.
Common explanations are an outdated or damaged Oracle client, a service still pointing to an Oracle home that was removed, incompatible Oracle components, an MS DTC configuration problem, or corruption in Windows components. A malicious impostor is another possibility when the file fails the identity checks above. There is no reliable published failure or infection rate for this executable, so a percentage-based risk claim would be misleading.
How do I identify the file that is running?
Identify the exact process before changing or deleting anything. These checks also preserve information that an Oracle administrator or security analyst may need.

omtsreco.exeunder the process list or the Details tab. - Right-click the process and choose Open file location. Record the complete path. If the process exits too quickly, search the disk for
omtsreco.exeand note every copy rather than assuming the first result is active. - Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect Details for product name, company, and version. On Digital Signatures, select the signer and choose Details to confirm that Windows reports a valid signature.
- Open Installed apps in Windows Settings, or Programs and Features in Control Panel, and look for Oracle Database Client, Oracle Services for Microsoft Transaction Server, or software supplied by an application vendor that uses Oracle.
- In Event Viewer, review Windows Logs > Application and System around the crash time. Note the service name, faulting module, exception code, Oracle home, and any MS DTC errors.
Do not replace the executable with a download from a process-file website. A replacement with the right filename can still be tampered with or mismatched to the Oracle libraries and service registration on your system.
How do I check whether the OraMTS service is required?
Its importance depends on the software running on the computer, not on Windows itself. Home users may discover an old Oracle client left by a development tool, while a business application may depend on OraMTS for order processing, inventory, payments, or other transactions.
Check the service
- Press Win+R, enter
services.msc, and press Enter. - Look for an Oracle MTS Recovery Service entry. The display name can include the Oracle home or an instance-specific suffix.
- Open Properties and record the service status, startup type, executable path shown on the General tab, and dependencies.
- Do not disable the service on a production computer until the application owner confirms that no Oracle distributed transactions use it.
Stopping the service for a controlled test is less destructive than uninstalling Oracle, but it can leave in-doubt transactions unresolved while stopped. Coordinate with the owner of any application that uses MS DTC.
How do I repair a legitimate omtsreco.exe installation?
Repair the Oracle component that supplied the file. The safest source is the matching Oracle installer or a supported Oracle update for the same Oracle home and architecture; do not copy a file from another computer.
1. Confirm the Oracle home and version
Use the file path, service properties, and installed-program entry to determine which Oracle home owns the service. If several homes exist, match the failing service to the application’s configured Oracle client. Mixing files from different Oracle releases can create additional DLL and service-registration errors.
2. Check OraMTS with Oracle’s control utility
Oracle documents the oramtsctl utility for querying and controlling the recovery service. Open an elevated Command Prompt, change to the bin directory of the relevant Oracle home, and run the command supplied by that installation. The documented operations are:

The exact command output and required privileges can vary by Oracle release. If -status identifies a different Oracle home than the application uses, correct the installation or service configuration rather than repeatedly starting the wrong service.
3. Repair or reinstall the matching client
- Stop the affected application and, where appropriate, the OraMTS service.
- Use the Oracle installer or your organization’s approved software package to repair the existing Oracle home, or remove and reinstall that same client release.
- Apply the supported Oracle updates used by your application and confirm that the client architecture matches the application (for example, 32-bit versus 64-bit).
- Reboot if the installer requests it, then check the service status and test the application’s transaction workflow.
If the installer reports a missing prerequisite, permission problem, or invalid Oracle home, preserve that message. It is more useful for an Oracle administrator than repeatedly replacing omtsreco.exe.

Run Windows component repair when other Windows files are damaged, updates fail, or system-wide corruption appears. DISM and SFC do not authenticate, repair, or replace an Oracle executable, so they are not a substitute for repairing the Oracle client.
- Save work and open Command Prompt as administrator. In the Start menu, search for
Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator. - Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealthand wait for it to finish. Do not close the window because the percentage can pause for a long time. - After DISM completes, run
sfc /scannow, as Microsoft instructs. Let verification reach 100 percent. - Restart Windows and retest the Oracle application. If SFC reports files it could not repair, review the CBS log and continue with Windows-specific troubleshooting rather than deleting Oracle files.
What should I do if omtsreco.exe might be malware?
Treat an unexpected, unsigned, or detected copy as suspicious until it is contained and scanned. Do not open the file or grant it additional permissions while investigating.
- If the process is active and your security product offers a quarantine or stop action, use that action. Avoid manually deleting a file before preserving its path and scan result.
- Update your installed antivirus definitions and run a full scan of all local drives. A quick scan may miss a file stored outside common startup locations.
- Follow the security product’s quarantine and restart instructions. Microsoft’s Malicious Software Removal Tool guidance also describes using an up-to-date antivirus product and a full scan; that guidance page is dated January 2021, so treat it as a procedural reference rather than evidence that this particular file is malicious.
- After cleanup, inspect scheduled tasks, services, startup entries, and browser downloads if the file reappears. A recurring copy may indicate another component that needs removal.
- If the file belongs to an Oracle installation and the scan is clean, restore normal operation by repairing that Oracle home instead of downloading a replacement executable.
Contact your organization’s security or Oracle administrator when the computer handles business transactions, credentials, or regulated data. Preserve the detected file’s hash, path, timestamps, and security-product name for that investigation.
Can I delete omtsreco.exe?
Delete it only as part of removing an Oracle component that is confirmed to be unused, or after your security software has quarantined a malicious impostor. Deleting the executable alone can leave a broken Windows service, missing Oracle libraries, and applications that fail during transaction recovery.

If Oracle is still needed
Keep the file and repair the matching Oracle home. If you remove it manually, the service may continue trying to start and generate repeated errors, while applications that use MS DTC can lose their recovery path.
If Oracle is no longer needed
- Confirm with the application owner that no software uses the Oracle client or MS DTC/OraMTS.
- Uninstall the related Oracle Database Client or Oracle Services for Microsoft Transaction Server through Windows or the Oracle installer.
- Restart and check
services.mscfor a leftover OraMTS service. - Use Oracle’s supported service-removal operation only when you have identified the retired Oracle home and understand the effect of
oramtsctl -delete. - Remove remaining folders only after uninstall completes and backups are available.
When should I use Windows Recovery Environment?
Use Windows Recovery Environment for broader startup failures that prevent normal repair, not as the first response to an isolated OraMTS crash. Microsoft lists Startup Repair, System Restore, and Reset this PC among its recovery tools.
- Startup Repair: attempts to correct startup configuration problems while preserving personal files.
- System Restore: returns system files and settings to an earlier restore point; it may remove recently installed software or drivers.
- Reset this PC: a much more disruptive option that can remove applications and, depending on the choice, personal files. Back up important data first.
After recovery, reinstall or repair the Oracle client rather than assuming a reset supplied a valid omtsreco.exe.

Does omtsreco.exe need an internet connection?
The recovery service communicates with local transaction components such as MS DTC and the Oracle database environment. Whether the wider application needs a network connection depends on that application’s architecture; network capability listed by a process database is not proof that a particular copy is malicious.
Why does the service return after I stop it?
An Oracle installer, service recovery setting, or dependent application may start it again. Check the service’s startup and recovery options, scheduled maintenance, and the application that owns the Oracle home before treating the restart as malware behavior.
Can a Windows update cause an OraMTS crash?
It can expose compatibility problems between an older Oracle client, MS DTC, and updated Windows components, but a crash alone does not identify the cause. Compare the event timestamp with recent updates, then verify the Oracle client version and service path before rolling back Windows.
