op.exe is the Windows command-line executable for 1Password CLI, not a Windows system file. It is normally safe when installed from 1Password’s official release or the Windows Package Manager (winget) and when its digital signature identifies AgileBits. Errors usually come from a missing installation, an incorrect PATH entry, a disabled connection to the 1Password desktop app, or an expired authorization. A same-named executable in a temporary, email, crack, or unrelated application folder is a different situation: do not run it until Microsoft Defender has checked it and you have obtained a verified copy.
What is op.exe?
op.exe is the Windows binary for 1Password CLI, the terminal interface for working with 1Password from PowerShell, Command Prompt, scripts, and other command-line workflows. It is installed separately from the graphical 1Password application. The executable is not a component of Windows, so Windows does not need it for ordinary operation.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
CLI is useful when you need to retrieve or inject secrets in a script, inspect vault data from a terminal, or support a development workflow without repeatedly opening the graphical interface. Because it can expose sensitive account data to commands and scripts, its installation source and authentication method matter as much as whether the command starts successfully.
The official Windows setup installs the CLI with winget or a release package, places op.exe in a known directory, adds that directory to PATH, and verifies the result with op --version. The current documentation includes a PowerShell example using CLI version 2.41.0; treat that number as a documentation example that can change, not as a permanently required version. Recheck the current 1Password documentation when installing or updating.

Is op.exe safe to run?
It can be safe, but the filename alone proves nothing. 1Password states that the CLI and its updates are digitally signed and distributed exclusively by 1Password. Your decision should therefore be based on where the file came from, where it is located, and whether its Windows signature matches the expected publisher.
A genuine copy is normally one you deliberately installed through winget or downloaded from a release link on 1Password’s developer documentation. A copy that appeared after opening an attachment, installing a crack, running a key generator, or downloading from an unrelated software site has no trustworthy provenance even if its name and icon look correct. Malware commonly uses familiar names to blend into a system.
Check the source before opening the file
- Prefer
winget install 1password-clior the current Windows release linked from 1Password’s developer documentation. - A normal installation is commonly under
C:Program Files1Password CLIor a package-managed directory. The exact path can differ with the installation method. - Do not launch a copy delivered as an email attachment, inside a crack or key generator, in a temporary download directory, or in an unrelated application folder.
- If more than one copy exists, identify which one your shell resolves before deleting anything. Removing one file while another untrusted copy remains earlier on PATH does not solve the risk.
Verify the Windows signature
- Right-click
op.exeand choose Properties. - Open the Digital Signatures tab. The signer should identify AgileBits, with the certificate issued through Microsoft’s signing infrastructure.
- Open the signature details and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid. The expected Extended Key Usage identifier is
1.3.6.1.4.1.311.97.661420558.769123285.207353056.500447802. - If the tab is missing, the signature is invalid, the signer is different, or the path is unexpected, stop using that copy. Do not bypass a security warning merely because the filename is familiar.
Microsoft distinguishes malware from potentially unwanted applications (PUAs) and recommends trusted download sources, current Windows and applications, and Defender scans when software is questionable. A valid signature supports provenance; it is not a guarantee that every file named op.exe is genuine. You still need to compare the file’s location with the installation you intended and consider what process or installer placed it there.
Why does Windows say op.exe is not recognized?
That message normally means the CLI is not installed, or the folder containing it is not present in the PATH available to the terminal you opened. Fix the installation and PATH before investigating 1Password account connectivity. A desktop app can be working perfectly while a shell still cannot find the separate CLI executable.
Install the official CLI
- Open Windows Terminal, PowerShell, or Command Prompt.
- Run
winget install 1password-cli. Approve the package source and installation prompts only if the package is the expected 1Password CLI package. - If winget is unavailable, download the current Windows release from 1Password’s official developer documentation, then extract the package rather than running a binary from the compressed archive.
- Place
op.exein a dedicated directory such asC:Program Files1Password CLI. Keep the directory stable so scripts and PATH do not break after a later cleanup. - Keep the downloaded archive until you have verified the extracted executable’s signature and version, then remove the archive if you do not need it. Do not leave several untracked copies in Downloads.
The package-managed location may not be identical to the example directory. That is fine: PATH must point to the directory that actually contains the installed binary, and the binary should still have the expected AgileBits signing information.

Add the executable directory to PATH
- Press the Windows key, search for Advanced System Settings, and open View advanced system settings.
- Select Environment Variables.
- Under either User variables (for your account only) or System variables (for all users), select Path and choose Edit.
- Add the folder that directly contains
op.exe, not the ZIP file and not merely the parent Downloads folder. Save each dialog with OK. - Sign out of Windows and sign back in. Existing processes keep the old environment, so simply opening a tab in an already-running terminal may not be enough.
- Open a new PowerShell window and run:
op --version
A version string confirms that the shell can find and start the CLI. If it still fails, check the path explicitly:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGet-Command op
where.exe op
$env:Path -split ';'
Get-Command and where.exe should point to the directory containing the intended executable. Get-Command op -All is particularly useful when an old copy shadows the new one. Remove stale or duplicate PATH entries that point to deleted downloads, then open another new terminal. Never replace a missing copy with an unofficial mirror.
If the command works in one terminal but not another, compare the PATH shown in each process and whether the shell was opened before or after the environment change. A successful result from one account does not automatically add the executable to another account’s user PATH.
How do I fix “no accounts configured,” “LostConnectionToApp,” or “connectionreset”?
These messages usually indicate that the CLI cannot use the 1Password desktop application for its authorized connection. The desktop app must be installed, open, unlocked, and configured for CLI integration. Installing a second copy of op.exe will not repair a disabled desktop setting.
- Open the 1Password desktop app and unlock it.
- Select the account or collection you want the CLI to use.
- Open Settings > Developer and enable Integrate with 1Password CLI.
- Open Settings > General and enable the option to keep 1Password in the Windows notification area. Closing the main window should then leave the integration process available in the tray.
- Restart the desktop app, unlock it again, and retry the CLI command in a new terminal.
- If the command needs biometric or PIN authentication, configure Windows Hello in Windows and in the 1Password sign-in flow. A fingerprint, face, or PIN prompt is expected only when the integration is configured to use it.
If the desktop app is installed but the integration switch is unavailable, update the app and CLI from their official channels, then restart Windows. Do not assume that reinstalling the CLI alone will repair a desktop-app connection; the integration setting lives in the desktop application. Also check that the account or collection selected in the app is the one your command expects.

When diagnosing a connection reset, change one variable at a time: first unlock the app, then confirm the Developer integration switch, then confirm notification-area behavior, and finally restart the app. This sequence distinguishes an authentication problem from a process-availability problem and avoids masking the original error with repeated reinstalls.
Why does op.exe keep asking for Windows Hello?
1Password’s desktop integration uses explicit authorization rather than a permanent, unattended connection. Authorization applies to one account at a time, expires after 10 minutes of inactivity, and has a maximum lifetime of 12 hours. A Windows subshell command requires its own authorization.
Unlocking the desktop app after it was locked revokes earlier authorization. In that case, another Windows Hello prompt is normal: unlock the app and authorize the CLI again. If prompts appear on every command, check that the app remains in the notification area, that the intended account is selected, and that you are not launching commands from a separate shell or scheduled process that needs independent authorization.
The limits explain why a command can work in the morning and prompt again later without any damaged executable. Ten minutes without activity ends the authorization, while twelve hours is the hard maximum even if commands continue to run. Locking and unlocking the app also invalidates the earlier grant, so a fresh prompt is expected after that event.
For automation that cannot display Windows Hello prompts, use the noninteractive authentication method documented by 1Password rather than trying to bypass the desktop integration. Keep any service credentials out of command history and source files. Treat noninteractive credentials as secrets, restrict their use to the required account or service, and replace them if they may have been exposed.

What should I do if op.exe is quarantined or looks suspicious?
Do not restore a quarantined file or add an exclusion until its source and signature are established. A file with the right name but an unknown publisher, an unexpected location, or behavior unrelated to the CLI should be treated as potentially unwanted or malicious.
- Disconnect the questionable copy from use: close terminals that launched it and do not run it again.
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options and run a Full scan.
- If unwanted software persists or the file returns after a restart, choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save work first; Windows will reboot to scan outside the normal desktop session.
- Under Windows Security > App & browser control > Reputation-based protection, review potentially unwanted app blocking and enable it when appropriate. A detected PUA remains blocked until you select and start a remediation action.
- After the scan, remove the untrusted file and obtain a clean CLI package from 1Password or winget. Recheck the digital signature before adding it to PATH.
Microsoft classifies behaviors such as trojans, downloaders, password stealers, and security tampering as malware categories. If the suspicious executable was run with elevated rights or you entered credentials while it was active, treat the incident as a broader Windows security problem: finish the scans, update Windows and applications, and follow your organization’s incident-response process. Do not copy secrets from the suspect machine into a replacement installation until it has been checked.
Which fix should I try first?
| Symptom | Most likely cause | First action | What success looks like |
|---|---|---|---|
| “op.exe is not recognized” | CLI missing or PATH does not contain its folder | Install from winget or the official release, correct PATH, sign out and back in | op --version prints a version |
| “No accounts configured” | Desktop integration is disabled or the app is locked | Unlock 1Password and enable Settings > Developer > Integrate with 1Password CLI | The command can see the authorized account |
| “LostConnectionToApp” or “connectionreset” | The desktop app is not available in the notification area or its integration process needs a restart | Keep 1Password in the notification area, restart it, and retry | The CLI reconnects after authorization |
| Repeated Windows Hello prompts | Authorization expired, was revoked by locking, or a separate shell needs authorization | Unlock and authorize again; check the 10-minute inactivity and 12-hour limits | Commands run until the authorization window ends |
| Defender quarantine or unsigned binary | Unknown or altered executable | Do not restore it; run Full and, if needed, Offline scans, then obtain a verified copy | Only a valid, intentionally installed binary remains on PATH |
Use provenance and authenticity as the first decision point. If the file is unofficial or unsigned, security scanning and replacement take priority over troubleshooting. If the file is verified but the shell cannot find it, repair PATH. If the shell starts a verified CLI but cannot reach an account, repair desktop integration. If the only symptom is a prompt, check authorization timing before reinstalling anything.
How can I avoid op.exe problems after fixing them?
- Keep one intentional installation directory and remove obsolete copies from PATH.
- Update the CLI through winget or 1Password’s official release channel instead of downloading replacement executables from search results or file-sharing sites.
- After an update, run
op --versionandwhere.exe opto confirm both the version and the path being used. - Keep the 1Password desktop app available in the notification area when using desktop integration.
- Expect a new authorization after the app is locked, after the inactivity timeout, or when a command runs in a separate Windows subshell.
- For scripts, choose an authentication approach designed for noninteractive use and protect its credentials as secrets.
- Document which account, collection, and installation path a team script expects so another copy or account is not selected accidentally.
- When replacing a binary, verify the new copy before changing PATH, then test in a fresh terminal. This makes rollback and incident review easier.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use op.exe without installing the 1Password desktop app?
The desktop integration described for Windows requires the 1Password desktop app, but 1Password also documents noninteractive authentication for automation. Choose that documented method when a script cannot display an interactive Windows Hello prompt.
How do I find out which op.exe PowerShell is using?
Run Get-Command op -All in PowerShell. It lists every matching command and its source, helping you identify an older copy earlier on PATH; remove or reorder entries only after verifying which installation you intend to keep.

Is the version printed by op –version enough to prove the file is genuine?
No. A counterfeit executable can print a plausible version. Combine the version check with the file location, the Windows Digital Signatures tab, and a download source you intentionally chose.
What happens to my 1Password data if I delete a bad op.exe copy?
Deleting the CLI executable does not by itself delete the desktop application or its account data. Reinstall a verified CLI package afterward if you still need terminal access, and recheck PATH so commands do not resolve to another untrusted copy.
Why does op.exe work in PowerShell but not in Command Prompt?
The shells may have been opened at different times or may receive different user and system PATH values. Sign out and back in, open fresh windows, and compare where.exe op and the PATH shown in each shell.
Does installing the desktop app automatically install op.exe?
No. The CLI is a separate installation. Install it through winget or the official Windows release, then verify the executable location and run op --version.
Why did a new Windows Hello prompt appear after I unlocked 1Password?
Unlocking the desktop app revokes earlier CLI authorization. Authorize the intended account again; this is expected behavior rather than evidence that the executable is damaged.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I disable Defender if it blocks op.exe?
No. Do not bypass a detection or restore a quarantine until the file’s source, location, and AgileBits signature are verified. Run a Full scan, use Offline scan if needed, and replace the file from 1Password or winget.
What does the 12-hour limit mean for a long-running script?
Desktop integration authorization has a 10-minute inactivity expiry and a hard 12-hour maximum. A script that must run longer or without prompts needs the documented noninteractive authentication approach instead of relying on the desktop connection.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: op.exe is normally the legitimate Windows binary for 1Password CLI, but trust comes from an intentional 1Password or winget installation and a valid AgileBits signature. Repair “not recognized” errors with the official package and PATH, repair connection errors through the unlocked desktop app and its Developer integration, and treat unsigned or oddly located copies as security incidents until Defender has cleared them.
