ose00003.exe is not positively identified by its filename alone. The name resembles a numbered temporary copy of Microsoft’s Office Source Engine executable, because Office setup has historically copied ose.exe to a temporary name such as %TEMP%ose00000.exe and run it with elevated privileges. However, no authoritative source confirms that the exact 00003 suffix, hash, Office version, or file on your computer is legitimate.
Treat the file as a question to investigate, not as automatically safe or automatically malware. Check its complete path, digital signature, parent process, command line, Office installation and behavior. Then scan it with Windows Security. For genuine Office-related errors, restart first and use Microsoft’s built-in Modify/Repair workflow; do not download a replacement executable from an “EXE fix” site.

ose00003.exe is an executable filename that resembles a temporary Office setup copy, but the exact file is not independently documented. The likely connection is the Office Source Engine (OSE), a component used by Microsoft Office installation, maintenance, updates and repairs. Reference material places the normal, installed binary at C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedSource EngineOSE.EXE, or at the corresponding x86 location under C:Program Files (x86), and associates it with the ose service.
A 2018 security advisory states that, during installation of Office 2003 and newer versions and individual Office components, setup can copy ose.exe to a numbered file such as %TEMP%ose00000.exe and execute it with elevated privileges. That explains why a number after ose can appear in a user or system temporary directory. It does not prove that every numbered copy is genuine, and it does not specifically identify ose00003.exe.

Filenames are cheap to copy. Microsoft Q&A guidance notes that any developer can create a file called ose.exe; the name alone is therefore not evidence of Microsoft origin. A legitimate copy should make sense in the context of an installed Office product, an expected path or setup operation, and a valid Microsoft digital signature.
Is ose00003.exe safe?
It may be a normal Office setup temporary file, but you cannot decide from the name alone. A file in the expected Office directory, signed by Microsoft Corporation with a certificate that validates on that local file, is substantially less suspicious than an unsigned copy in a profile directory. Location, signature, process ancestry and behavior must be considered together.

- Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365 is installed and was recently being installed, updated, repaired or removed.
- The permanent executable is under

- Task Manager shows it launched by an Office setup or maintenance process, rather than an unrelated application.

Evidence that requires immediate investigation
- The file is in a user profile, downloads folder or an unexpected temporary directory and has no valid signature.
- There is no Office installation or no Office operation that would explain its creation.
- The publisher is missing, the signature is invalid, or the file has been modified after signing.
- Task Manager shows an unknown parent process, an unusual command line or unexplained network activity.
- Windows Security or another trusted security product detects the file or a related process.
The historical security advisory is important context, not a verdict. It described a DLL-hijacking exposure in which temporary OSE copies could load libraries from the temporary directory. That was a version-specific observation from 2018, so it should not be read as proof that every numbered OSE file is malicious. Conversely, a public ANY.RUN sample dated January 2, 2025 recorded ose.exe launched from C:UsersadminAppDataLocalTempose.exe with a malicious-activity verdict. That sample demonstrates why path, signature, hash and behavior matter; it does not classify the file on your computer.
How do I verify ose00003.exe on my PC?
Do not delete or replace the file before recording enough information to determine what created it. Use an administrator account if Windows asks for permission, and avoid running the executable manually.

Record the location from Task Manager
Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. On the Details tab, locate

Inspect the process relationship
In Task Manager, add or review the columns that show the process identifier and, where available, the command line. Use the process tree or the Go to details and Open file location actions to identify the parent Office setup, update or repair process. An unknown parent, a script host or a program unrelated to Office is a reason to pause and investigate rather than assume the file is safe.

Validate the digital signature
Right-click the file, select Properties, and open Digital Signatures. Select the signer and choose Details to verify that the signature is valid and identifies Microsoft Corporation. A missing or invalid signature does not by itself prove malware, but it removes an important piece of evidence and makes quarantine and further analysis prudent.

Check the Office context
Confirm whether Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365 is installed and whether an installation, update, repair or removal was taking place when the file appeared. Compare the path with the normal Source Engine location under
Microsoft SharedSource Engine. Numbered copies in%TEMP%can occur during setup, while an unexpected permanent copy needs a stronger explanation. -
Scan the exact file and the surrounding system
Right-click the file in File Explorer and select Scan with Microsoft Defender, or open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and run a scan. If the file is in a profile or temporary directory and has an invalid signature, allow Windows Security to quarantine it rather than downloading a replacement. A full scan is appropriate when the process has unknown ancestry, persistence or other suspicious behavior.

Why does ose00003.exe keep appearing in the Temp folder?
Office setup can create a temporary, numbered copy of the Office Source Engine executable so that installation or maintenance can run it with elevated privileges. A failed update, repeated repair attempt, interrupted uninstall or another Office operation can cause setup to create another temporary copy. The number in the filename is therefore not a version number or a safety rating.
A temporary path deserves closer scrutiny because temporary directories are writable by ordinary processes. The 2018 advisory specifically discussed DLL-hijacking exposure when temporary OSE copies loaded libraries from %TEMP%. Keep Windows and Office updated, do not place replacement DLLs or executables beside the file, and investigate an unsigned copy rather than treating its temporary location as proof of either legitimacy or malware.
Can I delete ose00003.exe?
Do not delete a legitimate, installed OSE binary directly. Removing a file from the Office installation directory can break repair, update or maintenance operations. If Office is no longer wanted, uninstall the associated Office installation cleanly instead of deleting individual components.

Deleting a file that is no longer in use may remove a harmless leftover, but deletion is not a substitute for identifying the process that created it. If the file returns, the associated setup, scheduled maintenance or unwanted program still needs to be found.

1. Restart Windows and retry the Office operation
Save your work, close Office applications and restart Windows. Microsoft Support notes that restarting an Office application can sometimes correct a temporary failure. After the restart, retry the installation, update, repair or Office application that produced the message. If the same error returns, continue with an installation repair.
2. Open the Office Modify or Repair control
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11 or Windows 10.
- Find Microsoft 365 or the installed Microsoft Office edition, select the menu beside it and choose Modify. On older Windows layouts, open Control Panel > Programs and Features, select Office and choose Change or Modify.
- Use the repair option that matches the installation technology shown by the wizard.
3. Choose Quick Repair or Online Repair for Click-to-Run Office

Follow the wizard, allow it to close Office applications, and restart Windows if requested. Test the same Office task afterward rather than launching a downloaded executable.
4. Use Repair for an MSI-based installation
Some Office editions use the older Windows Installer (MSI) technology rather than Click-to-Run. In Programs and Features, select Office, choose Change, and select Repair when that is the control presented. The labels differ because Click-to-Run and MSI are different installation technologies; choose the option Windows actually displays instead of forcing instructions for the other type.
5. Uninstall and reinstall if repair fails
If both repair modes fail, use Microsoft’s Office uninstall troubleshooter, follow its removal prompts and restart when asked. Reinstall the licensed Office edition through the Microsoft account associated with the subscription or through approved installation media. Do not use a third-party “clean” installer or download an isolated ose00003.exe; the executable must come from the complete, trusted Office installation.
6. Resolve Windows installer and removal problems
If Windows cannot install or remove Office, follow Microsoft’s program install and uninstall troubleshooting steps. Run Windows Security scans while troubleshooting, particularly when the executable is unsigned, appears outside the normal Office path or returns after removal. A Windows installer failure and a suspicious executable can occur together, but repairing Office alone does not establish that an unknown file is safe.

What should I do if Office Source Engine has stopped working?
First determine whether the message is about the installed Office component or an unrelated file using the verification steps above. Open the Windows Services console by pressing Win+R, entering services.msc, and looking for the Office Source Engine service identified as ose. Record its status and the executable path shown in its properties; do not replace the service file manually.
If the service points to the expected Microsoft SharedSource Engine location and the signature is valid, run the appropriate Office repair. If it points to a temporary or profile directory, has no valid Microsoft signature, or starts with an unknown executable, stop treating the message as an ordinary Office fault: scan and quarantine the suspicious file, preserve evidence and involve your administrator or incident-response team.
How can I investigate a suspicious ose00003.exe safely?
- Do not execute it to “test” it. Opening an unknown executable can trigger whatever behavior it contains.
- Do not download a replacement. DLL and EXE repair sites can provide an altered or incompatible file and do not prove the source of the original error.
- Quarantine rather than manually overwrite. Let Windows Security isolate a detected file while you retain its path, hash and detection details for review.
- Check for persistence. Note whether the file returns after restart, which Office or installer action precedes its creation, and which parent process launches it.
- Escalate when necessary. Provide IT with the complete path, signer result, timestamps, hash, parent process, command line and Windows Security result. These details are more useful than the filename alone.
A clean scan is reassuring but not a guarantee, especially when the file is unsigned or behaves unexpectedly. Conversely, a temporary location is not by itself proof of infection: Office setup has a documented reason to create numbered temporary copies.

Send the complete path, creation and modification times, signer and certificate result, SHA-256 hash if available, parent process, command line and the Windows Security scan result. Also note which Office action was occurring immediately before the file reappeared.
Could a clean Windows Security scan still leave an Office repair problem?
Yes. A damaged Office installation, failed update or installer conflict can produce an error even when no malware is present. Repair or reinstall Office separately, while continuing to investigate an unsigned or unexplained executable.
