Microsoft Outlook is legitimate email and calendar software. It is generally safe when updated and used with normal phishing precautions, but Outlook cannot make every message, attachment, link, or sign-in page safe. If Outlook freezes, shows “Processing,” or says it cannot open the window, first identify whether you use classic Outlook or new Outlook; their troubleshooting methods are different. The sequence below starts with low-risk checks, then isolates add-ins and profiles before repairing data files or Office itself.

Outlook is Microsoft’s desktop and web-connected client for email, calendars, contacts and related mailbox data. On Windows, two products now matter for troubleshooting:

- Classic Outlook for Windows uses account profiles, PST or OST data files and COM add-ins. Commands such as
outlook.exe /safeandOutlook.exe /resetnavpaneapply to this version. - New Outlook for Windows has a different architecture and a single-profile experience. Classic profile-picker, COM-add-in and many safe-mode procedures do not transfer directly.
Microsoft’s classic freeze guidance explicitly warns that its procedures do not apply to new Outlook. Applying a classic command to the new app can therefore waste time or produce a misleading result.
Is Outlook safe to use?
Yes, Outlook is legitimate software with several built-in and Windows-level defenses. Safety is conditional, however: a trusted app can still display a phishing message, malicious attachment or imitation sign-in page, and the account itself can be targeted.

What protections does Outlook provide?
- For supported Microsoft-hosted mail, Exchange Online Protection uses spoof intelligence, sender verification and junk classification to help identify phishing.
- Outlook may show an unverified sender indicator or a
viatag when the authenticated sender differs from the visible From address. - Outlook.com can display trusted-sender icons, yellow safety bars for blocked attachments, pictures or links, and red safety bars for content it has blocked as potentially unsafe.
- Windows Security adds SmartScreen, reputation-based protection, Smart App Control and exploit mitigation against malicious sites, downloads, apps and potentially unwanted software.
These indicators are warnings, not proof. A familiar display name can still be spoofed, and an unfamiliar sender is not automatically malicious.
What habits still matter?
Microsoft defines phishing as “an email that appears legitimate but is actually an attempt to get your personal information or steal your money.” Treat unexpected payment requests, password prompts, urgent attachment requests and unfamiliar sign-in pages as untrusted until verified through a separate channel.
- Use a unique, strong password for the Microsoft account.
- Never reply to a message asking for your password or one-time code.
- Enable two-step verification.
- Review recent account activity for sign-ins you do not recognize.
- Check that a sign-in page uses a legitimate Microsoft domain before entering credentials.
- Keep Windows, Outlook and Microsoft 365 or Office updated.
The practical conclusion is that Outlook itself is safe to install and use, but no email client removes the need to verify senders, links, attachments and sign-in destinations.
How do I tell whether I have classic or new Outlook?
Open the app from the Start menu and inspect its name and interface. New Outlook commonly presents a switch or invitation to try the new experience; classic Outlook uses the long-established desktop interface with the File tab and profile-based account settings.
Also check whether the new-Outlook toggle is enabled in the app. If you are unsure, do not run classic commands yet. New Outlook can be reinstalled from the Microsoft Store; Microsoft states that this download requires Windows 10 version 17763.0 or later.
What should I do first when Outlook freezes or stops responding?
Use the branch that matches your version. End a hung task before launching another copy, and save any unsent work in other applications.

If you use new Outlook
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Select the Microsoft Outlook process, choose End task, and wait until it disappears.
- Reopen new Outlook from the Start menu.
- If it repeatedly hangs, uninstall and reinstall new Outlook through the Microsoft Store, provided the Windows 10 version requirement is met.
Do not use classic profile deletion, COM-add-in isolation or scanpst.exe as your first new-Outlook remedy; those procedures belong to a different architecture.
If you use classic Outlook
- Press
Alt+Taband look for a hidden dialog box. A confirmation or credential window can make the main Outlook window appear frozen. - Read the status bar. A large send/receive, archive or mailbox operation may still be running.
- Install pending Windows and Microsoft 365 or Office updates. Microsoft notes that Outlook works best when it is up to date.
- Start classic Outlook with
outlook.exe /safeto test whether an add-in is involved.
How do I fix classic Outlook stuck on “Processing” or “Not responding”?
Work from the least destructive test to the most targeted repair. Safe mode, a new profile and data-file repair answer different questions, so skipping directly to file repair can hide an add-in or account problem.
1. Check for work that only looks frozen
Use Alt + Tab to reveal a dialog behind Outlook. Then check the status bar for send/receive, archive or mailbox activity. Large operations can temporarily stop normal interaction without indicating corruption.
2. Update Windows and Office
Apply available Windows updates and Microsoft 365 or Office updates, then restart Windows. Re-test Outlook before changing profiles or data files.

Close Outlook. Open the Run dialog with Windows + R, enter outlook.exe /safe, and press Enter. Safe mode starts classic Outlook without its normal COM add-ins.
4. Isolate a COM add-in
If Outlook works in safe mode, open its add-in management area, disable the available COM add-ins, and restart normally. Re-enable them one at a time, restarting after each change, until the conflict returns. The last add-in enabled is the leading suspect; leave it disabled or update it through its publisher.

5. Test a new Outlook profile
Create a new classic Outlook profile and use it for a test launch. If the new profile works, the original profile is likely damaged or misconfigured. Keep the old profile until you have confirmed that required accounts and data are available.
6. Repair the data file when corruption is suspected
Close Outlook completely before using the Inbox Repair Tool, scanpst.exe, against the relevant PST or OST file. The tool is designed to scan and repair errors in those local Outlook data files; it does not replace account authentication, server-availability checks or add-in troubleshooting.
7. Repair Office
Use the Office repair feature, trying Quick Repair before Online Repair where both are offered. Restart Windows and test Outlook after each repair choice so you know which change affected the result.
How do I fix “Cannot start Microsoft Outlook” or “Cannot open the Outlook window”?
Start with safe mode, then separate add-in, profile and navigation-pane problems before touching a data file.
- Close any Outlook processes that remain open.
- Run
Outlook /safefrom the Run dialog. If classic Outlook opens, disable COM add-ins and test a normal launch. - If safe mode does not open Outlook, create and test a new profile.
- If the error concerns a damaged or unusual navigation pane, close Outlook and run
Outlook.exe /resetnavpane. This removes local navigation-pane customizations. - Only after those tests, close Outlook and run
scanpst.exeagainst the affected PST or OST file.
Before removing an existing profile, back up or otherwise preserve data you need. Removing a profile can delete offline cached content from the computer, even when the mailbox itself is hosted on a server.
How do I repair an Outlook email profile?

- Open Outlook and select File.
- Choose Account Settings, then Account Settings again.
- On the Email tab, select the affected account.
- Choose Repair and complete the wizard.
- Restart Outlook and test sending, receiving and opening existing folders.
Microsoft notes that this Repair option is unavailable for Outlook 2016 connecting to an Exchange account. In that case, update Office, test a new profile and verify account or server connectivity instead of looking for a button that is not provided.
How do I run scanpst.exe safely?
scanpst.exe is installed with classic Outlook and is intended for errors in PST or OST data files. It is useful when symptoms point to local file corruption, but it cannot fix a bad password, unavailable server or incompatible add-in.
- Exit Outlook and confirm in Task Manager that no Outlook process is still running.
- Open the installed Inbox Repair Tool,
scanpst.exe. - Browse to the PST or OST file associated with the affected profile.
- Run the scan and follow the tool’s repair prompts.
- Reopen Outlook and check the folders or account that previously produced the error.
If the file is actively in use, the scan may fail or produce an incomplete result. If repairing the file changes nothing, return to profile, add-in, authentication and server checks rather than repeatedly scanning the same file.

What mistakes make Outlook troubleshooting worse?
- Using classic commands in new Outlook: confirm the app version before running safe-mode, profile or Inbox Repair procedures.
- Deleting a profile too early: preserve needed offline cached content first.
- Running scanpst.exe while Outlook is open: close the application and confirm its process has ended.
- Assuming every freeze is corruption: hidden dialogs and large mailbox operations can look identical to a crash.
- Treating security banners as verdicts: warning indicators deserve investigation, but they are not proof that a message is safe or malicious.
- Repeating file repair without checking the account: authentication failures, unavailable servers and conflicting add-ins require different fixes.
When should I stop repairing locally?
Escalate when Outlook still fails with a clean profile, current Office updates and no add-ins, or when multiple users cannot connect to the same mailbox service. At that point, record the exact error text, whether the failure occurs in safe mode, the Outlook version, and whether web access to the mailbox works. Those details distinguish a local Windows problem from an account or service problem and prevent destructive trial-and-error.
