partitionwizard.exe is the main Windows program file for MiniTool Partition Wizard. A normally installed copy is expected under a MiniTool folder such as C:Program FilesMiniTool Partition Wizard 11partitionwizard.exe, but the filename by itself does not prove that a file is genuine. Treat it as legitimate only when its full path, digital signature, download source and current antivirus scan agree.
This guide explains how to identify the file, investigate safety warnings, and repair the main errors: a missing executable, an invalid Win32 message, a failed disk-access driver, file-system or bad-sector reports, startup crashes and compatibility failures. Back up important data before changing partitions or running repairs that can write to a disk.

What is partitionwizard.exe?
partitionwizard.exe is the primary Windows executable associated with MiniTool Partition Wizard, a disk-partition management program. File metadata identifies MiniTool Software Limited as the developer. An analysis of an older 8.1.1 sample also identifies MiniTool Partition Wizard and reports a MiniTool signature, but versions and installation folders change over time.
A common example is C:Program FilesMiniTool Partition Wizard 11partitionwizard.exe. Your installation may use another version-numbered directory, a different drive, or a separate folder selected during setup. Therefore, use the complete path and signature—not just the name—to identify the file.

What the executable does
When you launch Partition Wizard, this executable loads the program’s interface and requests the components it needs to inspect or modify disks. Some operations require a disk-access driver. If that driver cannot install or start, the application can open with a “Failed to load disk access driver” message or stop while loading.
Why the name can be misleading
Any program can copy a familiar filename. A file named partitionwizard.exe in a temporary folder, a user-download folder, or an unrelated Windows directory deserves investigation even if another, genuine copy is installed elsewhere.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIs partitionwizard.exe safe?
Safety is conditional. A copy obtained through MiniTool’s official download channel, installed in an expected MiniTool directory, digitally signed by MiniTool and clean in a current scan is more consistent with the legitimate application. None of those checks alone is conclusive, and a security alert should not be dismissed simply because the filename looks familiar.
Check the complete path
- Open Task Manager if the process is running, right-click partitionwizard.exe, and choose Open file location.
- In File Explorer, read the entire path. A MiniTool Partition Wizard program folder under
Program Filesis consistent with a normal installation; a temporary, download, or unrelated system folder requires further review. - Do not run or replace a suspicious copy while you investigate. If you downloaded an installer from an unofficial mirror, remove it and obtain a fresh installer from MiniTool’s official channel.
Inspect the publisher signature
Right-click the file, select Properties, and open Digital Signatures. The signer should identify MiniTool Software Limited and the signature should validate in Windows. You can also use an elevated or ordinary PowerShell window:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "C:Program FilesMiniTool Partition Wizard 11partitionwizard.exe"
Review the Status and signer information returned for the exact file you located. A missing, invalid or unexpected signature is a reason to stop and investigate rather than add an antivirus exclusion.
Scan before allowing it
Run a current Microsoft Defender Antivirus scan, or scan the file with another reputable security product. Microsoft Security Intelligence lists a detection named App:MiniTool_Partition_Wizard_BundleInstaller and states that Microsoft Defender Antivirus detects and removes that threat. That listing concerns the named bundle-installer detection; it should not be generalized to every signed Partition Wizard executable, but it means an alert deserves investigation instead of an automatic whitelist.

MiniTool’s September 18, 2026 article says that some ESET and Webroot alerts are false positives and presents the software as digitally signed and clean. That is the vendor’s position, not a substitute for checking your own file’s path, signature, source and current scan.
Do not download replacement EXE files
Never obtain a replacement partitionwizard.exe from a file-sharing site or an “DLL/EXE download” page. Reinstall from MiniTool’s official channel so the installer and all supporting components arrive together.
Which Windows versions and editions are supported?
MiniTool’s consumer download information lists Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1, Windows 10 and Windows 11. Server editions are offered separately. Confirm that you downloaded the edition matching your Windows release before applying fixes; an unsupported release can produce the message that Partition Wizard does not support your system.
- For a consumer PC, verify whether Windows is 7, 8/8.1, 10 or 11 and select the corresponding Partition Wizard package.
- On Windows Server, use the separate Server edition rather than assuming the consumer installer is interchangeable.
- If the program worked previously and stopped after an operating-system change, check edition compatibility before deleting files or services.
How do I fix “Failed to load disk access driver”?
This message generally means Partition Wizard could not install or start its disk-access drivers. MiniTool’s documented repair is to remove the pwdrvio and pwdspio service entries, restart Windows, and launch Partition Wizard so it can install the drivers again.
- Close Partition Wizard and any other disk-management utilities.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator: press Start, type
cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and choose Run as administrator. - Remove the two service entries with these commands, one at a time:
sc.exe delete pwdrvio sc.exe delete pwdspio - Restart Windows. A reboot is required before the driver state is fully refreshed.
- Launch Partition Wizard from its installed folder. The program should attempt to install its disk-access drivers again.
- If Windows reports that a service does not exist, note the message and continue with the restart and relaunch; do not delete unrelated services.
Security software, permissions or an incomplete installation can still prevent driver installation. If the error returns after the reset, reinstall the official package with appropriate administrator rights and check whether your Windows edition is supported.
How do I repair file-system, NTFS and disk-I/O errors?
Use Partition Wizard’s Check File System feature for file-system problems. Its FAQ maps error codes 4 and 40 to disk I/O or NTFS issues and directs users to the same check. Make a backup before any operation that can modify a partition.

Run Check File System
- Open Partition Wizard and select the affected partition in the disk map.
- Choose Check File System from the available partition actions.
- Allow the check to complete. If Windows says the volume is in use, close applications that use that drive and follow the restart prompt presented by the program.
- Record the result before attempting a partition resize, move or conversion.
Do not confuse a file-system check with a bad-sector repair. A clean file-system result does not establish that the physical media is healthy.
Check a disk that reports bad sectors
For bad-sector reports, MiniTool recommends running the Windows chkdsk utility with the /f /r options from an elevated Command Prompt, then trying the Partition Wizard operation again.
- Back up important files to another disk before testing the volume.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run the command for the affected drive letter, replacing
X:with the correct volume:chkdsk X: /f /r - If Windows schedules the check for the next restart because the volume is in use, confirm the schedule and reboot.
- Wait for the scan to finish, then reopen Partition Wizard and retry the original operation.
The /r pass can take a long time, especially on large or damaged disks. Interrupting it can leave the volume in an uncertain state, so allow the process to complete whenever possible.
What should I do if partitionwizard.exe is missing or the installer is corrupted?
A missing executable, a damaged setup package or a “not a valid Win32 application” message usually points to an incomplete, corrupted or incompatible download rather than a file that should be replaced manually.
- Remove the damaged installer or incomplete program entry through Windows’ installed-apps settings if it is listed.
- Download a fresh installer from MiniTool’s official channel. Do not use a replacement EXE copied from another computer or downloaded from an untrusted site.
- Confirm that the package matches your Windows release and whether you need the consumer or Server edition.
- Run the installer with an account that has administrator rights. If Windows displays a permission prompt, approve it only after confirming the source and signature.
- After installation, check the new file’s path and digital signature before launching disk operations.
Understanding “not a valid Win32 application”
Windows uses this message when it cannot execute the file as a compatible Windows program. Common explanations in this context are a truncated download, a damaged executable, an installer for a different Windows environment or a file that is not the genuine program. Re-downloading the correct official package and checking its integrity is safer than trying random compatibility settings or downloading another EXE.
How do I troubleshoot a startup crash or loading-module hang?
MiniTool’s FAQ asks users to collect the installation-folder log.txt, note the exact point at which the crash occurs and test again with external drives disconnected when the loading module hangs.

- Copy

- Disconnect external USB drives and other removable storage, then launch the program again. Reconnect devices one at a time after testing.
- If the program opens without the external drives, inspect those drives and their connections before attempting partition changes.
A crash log can distinguish a startup failure from a device-specific loading problem. Keep the original log when contacting MiniTool support or when comparing behavior after a clean reinstall.
Should I reinstall or reset the driver services first?
Choose the least disruptive fix that matches the symptom. A driver-load message calls for the pwdrvio/pwdspio service reset first; a missing file or invalid Win32 message calls for an official re-download and reinstall; a file-system or bad-sector report calls for disk checks.
| Symptom | First manual action | Next step if it persists |
|---|---|---|
| Failed to load disk access driver | Delete pwdrvio and pwdspio, restart, relaunch |
Reinstall the official package and verify Windows edition |
| File-system error | Run Check File System | Review the result and preserve backups before partition edits |
| Bad-sector report | Run chkdsk X: /f /r in an elevated Command Prompt |

| Executable missing or corrupted | Re-download the official installer | Install with appropriate administrator rights |
| Startup crash or loading-module hang | Save log.txt and test with external drives disconnected |
Use the log and observed trigger for further support |
When should I use bootable media instead of Windows?
Use offline bootable media only when normal Windows access is insufficient—for example, when the system volume cannot be accessed reliably or the installed program cannot start. MiniTool documents USB flash drives for creating bootable media.
- Back up data that remains accessible before changing partitions.
- Create the bootable environment using the official Partition Wizard tools and a USB flash drive.
- Shut down the computer, connect the USB drive and select it from the firmware boot menu.
- Perform only the operation required to recover access or complete the partition task, checking the target disk carefully before confirming changes.
- Shut down, remove the USB drive and boot Windows normally to verify the result.
Offline media is not a substitute for checking a failing disk. If bad sectors or repeated I/O errors remain, preserve data first and avoid repeated write operations that could worsen data loss.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow can I avoid making a partition problem worse?
- Keep a current backup before resizing, moving, formatting or converting any partition.
- Confirm the disk and partition selection in the map before accepting an operation.
- Do not interrupt a file-system check or a scheduled
chkdskrun unless Windows reports a failure. - Do not create antivirus exclusions for an unverified executable or driver.
- Use the official installer and the edition that matches your Windows release.
- Disconnect external drives when diagnosing a loading-module hang, then reconnect them individually.
- If a disk reports bad sectors, prioritize copying important files over repeated repair attempts.
