pb.exe is not one unique Windows component. It is an executable filename used by more than one program, including a Frost game launcher associated with Innova/4game PointBlank and software identified in some catalogs as Pop Up Blocker. The name alone cannot prove that a file is legitimate or malicious. Check the parent application, complete file path, publisher and digital signature before deleting or replacing it.
If pb.exe is missing, corrupt or repeatedly crashing, first identify which application owns it. That ambiguity is the most important fact when troubleshooting. A copy installed inside a game folder you deliberately chose is a different case from a copy launching from a temporary directory, a user profile folder or an unexpected system location. Do not judge the file by its name alone.
Why the filename is not enough
- Windows does not reserve
pb.exefor one built-in process. - Several unrelated applications can install files with the same basename.
- A legitimate file can be copied or renamed by another program, and malware can use a familiar filename to look harmless.
- The parent program, path, publisher, signature and behavior provide stronger evidence than the filename.

Is pb.exe safe?
It can be safe when it belongs to software you intentionally installed, is located in that program’s expected directory and carries a valid signature from the expected publisher. It can also be unwanted or malicious when it appears without a known parent application, runs from an odd location, has no trustworthy signature or behaves differently from the program that installed it.
File.net gives one PointBlank/Frost-related listing a third-party “25% dangerous” rating and notes that the file can interact with other programs, monitor input and connect to the Internet. That percentage is neither a Microsoft classification nor proof of malware. Game launchers and utilities may legitimately perform actions that look intrusive to a generic scanner, while malicious software can imitate a legitimate filename.
Microsoft explains that malware may steal data or use a computer for attacks, while potentially unwanted applications can display advertising, cryptomine or install unwanted software. Treat unexpected behavior seriously, but base the decision on evidence from the particular file on your computer.
Signs that support a legitimate installation
- You recognize the parent game or utility and installed it deliberately.
- Task Manager opens the file location inside that application’s normal installation directory.
- The Properties window shows the expected publisher under Digital Signatures, and Windows reports that the signature is valid.
- The file appears only when the owning application runs and its network or input activity is consistent with that application.
- A current Defender scan does not identify the file as a threat.
Signs that warrant caution
- You do not recognize the program that installed the file.
- The path is a temporary folder, a random subfolder of a user profile or another location unrelated to the program you use.
- The file has no signature, an invalid signature or a publisher you cannot connect to the parent application.
- It starts automatically without a clear reason, creates persistent pop-ups, slows the system or makes unexpected network connections.
- Defender or another reputable scanner flags it, or the file reappears after removal.
How do I identify the pb.exe file that is running?
Use Task Manager and File Explorer before changing anything. The goal is to connect the running process to a known application and preserve the exact path for scanning or support.

Open the process location
Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. On the Processes or Details tab, findpb.exe, right-click it and choose Open file location. If several entries exist, inspect each one; identical names can represent unrelated files. -
Record the complete path
Copy or write down the drive letter and every folder in the path. Compare it with the installation folder of the game or utility you intentionally installed. A path by itself is not proof of safety, but an unexpected path is a reason to investigate rather than whitelist the file.

Check the publisher and signature
Right-click the file, select Properties and open Digital Signatures. Select a signature and choose Details to see whether Windows reports that it is valid and which publisher signed it. A familiar name in the Details window is useful only when it also matches the parent application and path.

Record basic file information
In Properties, note the file size, creation or modification dates and version information. You can calculate a comparison hash in PowerShell with

Right-click the file in File Explorer and choose the Microsoft Defender scan option available on your Windows edition. Do not add an exclusion merely because the filename looks familiar. If the file is still suspicious, update Defender and run a full scan, or use Microsoft Defender Offline so scanning can occur before normal startup programs load.
Why does pb.exe keep giving errors?
Repeated errors usually fall into one of four groups: the owning application is damaged, Windows system files are corrupt, the storage device has errors, or another program is interfering. A suspicious or unwanted copy is a separate possibility and should be handled as a security issue rather than repaired blindly.
The parent application is incomplete or damaged
An interrupted update, failed installation, quarantine event or manual deletion can leave the launcher without a required DLL or configuration file. The copy is unwanted or malicious
Malware and potentially unwanted applications can use familiar names, create repeated crashes or alter startup behavior. Do not attempt to “repair” a file that Defender identifies as a threat; isolate it, complete the scan and investigate the software that put it there.
How do I fix pb.exe errors on Windows?
Work through these steps in order. Stop when the problem is resolved, but keep the path and scan results if you need to contact the application’s publisher.

Restart and install pending Windows updates
Save your work, restart Windows and open Settings > Windows Update. Install available updates, restart again if requested, and test the application. A restart clears a locked process and allows a pending servicing operation to finish.

Run an updated Defender scan
Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection, check for protection updates, and run a Full scan. If the file returns, launches by itself or remains suspicious, use Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save open files first because Offline scan restarts the PC.

Open Command Prompt as an administrator. Run:

Check the system drive when disk errors are suspected
From an elevated Command Prompt, run:
chkdsk /f C:Windows may schedule the check for the next restart if drive C: is in use. Accept that prompt only after saving work, then allow the scan to complete. Back up important files before extended troubleshooting if you suspect the drive is failing.

Test in Safe Mode
Use Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now, then choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart and select Safe Mode. The exact labels can vary slightly by Windows edition. If the error disappears in Safe Mode, investigate startup programs, drivers and shell extensions rather than replacing pb.exe.

Use a clean boot to isolate a conflict
Press
Win+R, entermsconfig, and open System Configuration. On Services, select Hide all Microsoft services, disable the remaining non-Microsoft services, then use Task Manager’s Startup apps tab to disable nonessential startup items. Restart and test. Re-enable services and startup items in groups afterward so you can identify the conflicting item and return to normal startup. -
Repair or reinstall the owning application
Use the application’s own repair option if it provides one, or go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the parent program and choose Repair or Uninstall when available. Reinstall only from the publisher’s official launcher, store or website. Do not copy a replacement

Restore Windows if the fault began after a change
If updates, drivers or software changes preceded the errors, use System Restore or another Windows recovery option. Choose a restore point from before the problem when one exists, and back up personal files first. Recovery can undo system changes but does not establish whether an unknown pb.exe was malicious.

If the file belongs to a utility or game you no longer want, uninstall that parent application through Windows Settings or its official uninstaller. Deleting only the executable can leave scheduled tasks, services or configuration files behind and can damage a legitimate installation.

If a scan confirms malware or you entered passwords while the suspicious process was active, use a separate trusted device to change important passwords and enable multifactor authentication. Can I delete pb.exe?
Do not delete it solely because the name is unfamiliar. First identify the parent application and scan the exact file. If it is part of a game or utility you still use, deleting it can make that program fail and may force a repair or reinstall.
If you no longer want the owning application, uninstall the application instead of deleting a standalone executable. If Defender identifies the file as malicious, let Defender quarantine or remove it and then investigate persistence through a complete scan. An unexplained copy that returns after uninstalling its parent application deserves further security review.

Microsoft recommends keeping about 10% to 15% of a drive free so Windows and applications have room for swap files and related operations. This is a capacity recommendation, not a claim that deleting temporary files will automatically cure pb.exe errors. Check Settings > System > Storage and make space safely before large updates, repair operations or reinstallations.
When should I stop troubleshooting and seek help?
Escalate to the application’s publisher or a qualified technician when the executable has a valid signature and expected path but still fails after Windows repair and a clean reinstall, when CHKDSK reports recurring problems, or when multiple unrelated programs crash.
