pccleanerm.exe is most likely PCCleanerM.exe, the main executable installed with a third-party PC Cleaner package from Monterix Technology LLC. It is not a Windows system file. Microsoft Defender, Malwarebytes and Trend Micro classify related PC Cleaner builds as potentially unwanted software (PUA/PUP), so an unexpected copy should be investigated and usually removed rather than repaired.
The filename alone is not proof that every similarly named file is the same program. Confirm the complete path, publisher, digital signature, hash and current security verdict, then uninstall the associated application, update Defender and run a full scan. If the process returns, check its startup entry and the skpVersionUpdate scheduled task, and use Microsoft Defender Offline.

What is pccleanerm.exe?
The name in the title is generally written as PCCleanerM.exe in security and software databases. Trend Micro documents it as the principal executable for a Monterix PC Cleaner installation, normally at %Program Files%MonterixPC CleanerPCCleanerM.exe. Advanced Uninstaller also associates that executable with PC Cleaner 12.4.0.21 from Monterix Technology LLC.
That makes it a third-party utility, not a component of Windows, Microsoft Defender or a game launcher. A legitimate installer could place a file with this name on a computer, but the program’s classification and behavior matter more than the spelling. The same or nearly the same filename has been used by different publishers, with different hashes and different detection results.

What does the Monterix version install?
In Trend Micro’s analysis, the package creates a PC Cleaner autorun entry and an hourly scheduled task named skpVersionUpdate. The installer may also include a Driver Updater component. Those persistence mechanisms explain why the process can start after a reboot or appear again after you thought you had closed it.
Why do people notice it?
PC Cleaner-style programs commonly run scans, display warnings and offer paid cleanup or optimization functions. Malwarebytes describes PUP.Optional.PCCleaner as a system optimizer that may use exaggerated or intentionally false scan results to persuade people that their computers have serious problems. BleepingComputer similarly labels a related PC-Cleaner startup entry as an undesirable program that can show exaggerated threat reports.
Is pccleanerm.exe safe?
Treat an unexpected PCCleanerM.exe as suspicious and unwanted until you identify it. Microsoft Defender detects a related family as PUA:Win32/PCClean; Malwarebytes uses PUP.Optional.PCCleaner; and Trend Micro classifies the Monterix build as a potentially unwanted application. Microsoft explains that PUAs are not necessarily malware, but they can show unwanted advertising, offer additional software, alter settings or perform other behavior you did not request.
Those classifications support removal of an unrequested PC Cleaner installation, but they do not prove that every file bearing a similar name is malicious. A file’s exact location, signer, hash and current scan result must be considered together. A valid digital signature identifies the claimed publisher; it does not by itself establish that the program is desirable or harmless.
What a detection does and does not mean
- A PUA or PUP verdict means the security product considers the software unwanted or risky, not that the file is automatically a confirmed virus.
- Microsoft states that Defender detects and removes the related threat family. Keep Defender’s security intelligence current before scanning.
- Do not create a Defender exclusion simply because the executable is signed or because its own scan claims to have found problems.
- If you believe a detection is a false positive, preserve the file’s hash and publisher information and submit it for review rather than restoring it casually.
How can I identify the exact pccleanerm.exe file?
Identification should come before deletion. Two files with similar names can belong to unrelated products, and a path in a temporary directory is more concerning than the documented installation directory.

- Open Digital Signatures. Check whether the signature is present, valid and issued to the company you expected. An absent or invalid signature warrants additional scrutiny.

A path such as %Program Files%MonterixPC CleanerPCCleanerM.exe, together with a PC Cleaner startup entry or skpVersionUpdate task, matches the Monterix pattern documented by Trend Micro. A copy in %Temp%, a user-profile download folder or an unrelated system directory does not establish the same identity and should be examined more closely.

What symptoms can this software cause?
Microsoft lists slow performance, added or modified files, changed desktop settings, freezing or crashing and reduced available storage among symptoms associated with affected PUA devices. These signs are not unique to PC Cleaner, so use them as reasons to investigate rather than as proof that this executable caused every problem.
- Repeated pop-ups reporting large numbers of “problems” immediately after a scan.
- A PC Cleaner or Driver Updater window that appears at sign-in without a deliberate launch.
- New startup entries, scheduled tasks or folders under
Program FilesorProgramData. - Crashes that mention
PCCleanerM.exe,PC-Cleaner.exeor a similarly named executable. - Unexpected disk, CPU or memory activity while the utility scans or updates itself.
How do I remove pccleanerm.exe safely?
The safest order is to identify the file, uninstall the parent application, scan the computer and only then remove leftover persistence. Avoid deleting a random executable first: doing so can leave an orphaned startup entry, produce new error messages or remove evidence needed to distinguish one sample from another.
1. Save evidence and close the program
Write down the path, publisher, version, signature status and any Defender or other scanner detection name. If the application is open, exit it normally. If it will not close, end the task in Task Manager after recording the details. Do not run a cleanup scan from inside a program you already suspect until you have captured its identity.
2. Uninstall the associated application
- In Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. In Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Search for PC Cleaner, Monterix PC Cleaner or a name that matches the product shown in the file’s properties.
- Select the application’s menu and choose Uninstall, then follow the vendor uninstaller.
- Review the list for a bundled Driver Updater. Remove it as well if you did not intentionally install it.
- Restart Windows when the uninstaller requests it, even if the process appears to have stopped.
Microsoft recommends removing unwanted software through Windows’ installed-app list. The built-in uninstall path is preferable to manually deleting registry values or scheduled tasks before the parent program has been removed.

3. Update Defender and run a Full scan
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection, then choose Protection updates > Check for updates (the exact label can vary slightly by Windows release).
- Return to Virus & threat protection, select Scan options, choose Full scan and start it.
- Allow Defender to quarantine detections. Do not restore
PCCleanerM.exemerely because it has a publisher signature or because the program claims that Defender is wrong.
A full scan checks the installed files and common persistence locations after the unwanted application has been uninstalled. Keep the computer powered and connected until the scan completes; interrupting it can leave the status inconclusive.
4. Use Microsoft Defender Offline if it returns
If the file reappears, cannot be removed while Windows is running, or the symptoms continue after a full scan, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options and select Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Windows restarts into a separate scanning environment, which can inspect files before normal startup programs load. Save open work first because the restart is automatic.
A reputable second-opinion scanner is an optional check. Malwarebytes documents the PUP.Optional.PCCleaner family and its removal process, so its result can help confirm whether the remaining file belongs to that family. Run one scanner at a time and review its quarantine history rather than installing several real-time products together.
5. Check persistence after the scan
Only after uninstalling and scanning should you inspect what still launches:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open Task Manager > Startup apps and look for PC Cleaner or an entry pointing to the recorded path. Disable an unwanted entry.
- Open Task Scheduler. In Task Scheduler Library, look for
skpVersionUpdateor a task whose action launches the removed PC Cleaner folder. - Confirm that the task’s action points to the same executable you documented. Export or photograph the task details if you may need support.
- Delete a task only when you are certain it belongs to the uninstalled application. Do not remove unrelated Microsoft tasks just because their names are unfamiliar.
- Restart and check Task Manager again. If the entry returns, run Defender Offline once more and inspect other installed applications for a bundled installer.
Trend Micro’s reports identify the PC Cleaner autorun entry and hourly skpVersionUpdate task as part of the Monterix pattern. Their presence is useful for matching a sample, but a task with the same name in a different path still requires local verification.

6. Repair Windows only if problems remain
After removal, install pending Windows updates and restart. If Windows itself still freezes or crashes, use Microsoft’s normal support workflow for the remaining symptom rather than reinstalling the unwanted executable. An error mentioning PCCleanerM.exe usually means the third-party program is crashing; it does not mean Windows needs that file.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I interpret pccleanerm.exe error messages?
Third-party file databases record messages such as “PC Cleaner has stopped working,” “A problem caused the program to stop working correctly,” and access-violation errors for similarly named executables. These messages describe a crash in the third-party application. They are not evidence that the Windows operating system is missing a required component.
“PCCleanerM.exe has stopped working”
If you did not intentionally install PC Cleaner, uninstall it and scan instead of trying to repair the executable. If you did install it, capture the exact path and publisher first; a crash report for one build cannot safely be applied to every file with the same name.
“The application was unable to start” or an access-violation message
Do not download a replacement DLL from an unverified website. Such downloads can introduce another unwanted program and obscure the original evidence. Remove the parent application, complete the Defender scans and then address any independent Windows errors that remain.
The process returns after reboot
A returning process usually indicates that the application, its updater or an installer remains. Check Installed apps, Startup apps and Task Scheduler for entries that point to the recorded path. If Defender detects it again, use Offline scan before deleting persistence manually.

Why is the filename not enough to identify the threat?
Security databases contain several unrelated examples. The following records illustrate why a path and hash must accompany the name.

Which removal approach should I choose?
| Situation | Best first action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You recognize and want to remove PC Cleaner | Uninstall it from Installed apps, then run a Full scan | Removes the parent application before checking for leftovers |
| Defender detects a PUA | Allow quarantine, update security intelligence and scan again | Uses Microsoft’s supported detection and removal path |
| The process returns after reboot | Run Defender Offline, then inspect Startup apps and Task Scheduler | Checks before normal startup and addresses documented persistence |
| The filename is in an unusual folder | Record path, signer and hash; obtain a second-opinion scan | Similar names do not identify the same sample |
| Only a crash message appears and no detection exists | Identify the parent app and uninstall it if unwanted | A third-party crash does not make the executable a Windows requirement |
What mistakes should I avoid?
- Do not assume a familiar name is a Windows file. PCCleanerM.exe is not a standard Windows component.
- Do not call every copy a confirmed virus. The documented classifications are PUA/PUP; exact identification still depends on the local sample.
- Do not trust exaggerated scan totals. A large number of reported “issues” can be a sales tactic rather than evidence of damage.
- Do not delete random registry entries first. Remove the application through Windows, then clean verified persistence.
- Do not restore a quarantine item casually. Keep the detection quarantined unless the hash, publisher and independent review establish a false positive.
- Do not rely on a clean scan from an old database entry. Detection results can change as products update; scan the file you actually have.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I delete PCCleanerM.exe manually instead of uninstalling it?
Manual deletion is risky because the PC Cleaner uninstaller, startup entry or scheduled updater may remain and generate errors. Record the file details, uninstall the associated application from Windows, scan the system and remove only persistence that you can tie to that application.
Does a valid digital signature prove that PCCleanerM.exe is safe?
No. A valid signature helps establish who signed the file, but it does not override a PUA/PUP detection or show that you wanted the software installed. Judge the signature together with the path, hash, behavior and current security verdict.
What should I do if Defender finds PCCleanerM.exe after I uninstall PC Cleaner?
Allow the detection to be quarantined, update Defender and run a Full scan. If it returns after reboot or cannot be removed, run Microsoft Defender Offline and then inspect the documented startup entry and skpVersionUpdate task.
Is every file named pccleanerm.exe the same threat?
No. Security records show similarly named files from different publishers with different hashes and verdicts, including a pccleaners.exe sample that received a clean scan in a 2026-09-23 analysis. The complete path, signer, hash and current scan result are required for an exact identification.
