pcspeedmaximizer.exe is a Windows executable name associated by Microsoft with the potentially unwanted PC Speed Maximizer (also called SpeedingUpMyPC) software family. Microsoft has observed samples that alter DNS settings and arrive bundled with other programs, and its security service has described the application as having a poor reputation. That makes an unexpected copy worth investigating and usually removing, but the filename alone does not prove that every copy is malware. Check the exact path, signer, hash and installation source before deciding what is on your PC.
What is pcspeedmaximizer.exe?
pcspeedmaximizer.exe is an executable filename used by PC Speed Maximizer and related products. Microsoft Security Intelligence lists PCSpeedMaximizer.exe, PCSpeedMaximizer (1).exe and PCSpeedMaximizer (2).exe among filenames associated with PUA:Win32/SpeedingUpMyPC. The same entry lists product names such as PC Speed Maximizer, Optimizer Pro and Super Optimizer.

Microsoft classifies a potentially unwanted application (PUA) separately from confirmed malware. Its guidance says PUAs are not malware by definition, but they can show unwanted advertising, secretly use a computer for cryptomining, offer additional unexpected applications or perform other unwanted actions. In practical terms, an unexpected pcspeedmaximizer.exe should be treated as untrusted until you inspect that particular file.
Why the filename is not enough
Several unrelated programs can use similar filenames, and Microsoft notes that samples in this family may carry digital signatures from different vendors. A name match cannot establish that your copy is identical to a sample Microsoft detected. The path, publisher, hash, download source and behavior have to be considered together.

Is pcspeedmaximizer.exe safe?
An unexpected copy is not something to approve automatically. Microsoft has reported poor reputation, DNS changes and bundled installation of other software for this software family. Those findings support caution and removal of unwanted software, but they do not justify calling every local copy a confirmed virus.
What Microsoft observed
Microsoft’s PUA:Win32/SpeedingUpMyPC entry says the program can modify system DNS settings. Such changes can be used to inject advertisements while you browse. Microsoft also reports bundles containing driver updaters, privacy tools, cleaners and PDF software, with a security alert sometimes being the only visible symptom.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The Microsoft entry, published in 2016 and updated in 2017, included the warning: “This application was stopped from running on your network because it has a poor reputation.” The age of that entry matters: it documents identified samples and behaviors, not a guarantee that every file bearing the name today is the same build.
Independent third-party context
EnigmaSoft’s 2026 scorecard calls PC Speed Maximizer a bogus registry cleaner and says it displayed exaggerated errors and fake scan results to encourage a purchase. That is EnigmaSoft’s threat assessment, not a Microsoft classification or an independent prevalence study. The scorecard says 15 security vendors flagged the file and reports 53,408 infected or suspected computers in its own SpyHunter telemetry; those figures should be read as that vendor’s data, not as a population infection rate.
How can I verify the copy on my PC?
Identify the exact file before deleting anything. A copy installed in a normal application directory is different evidence from one launched out of a temporary download folder or a Windows system directory.

- Open the file location. In Task Manager, right-click the process and choose Open file location. If the process is not running, search for
pcspeedmaximizer.exein File Explorer and record the complete drive and folder path. - Inspect Properties. Right-click the file, select Properties, and review Details for product and file-version information. Check Digital Signatures for the signer and whether Windows reports that the signature is valid. A signature is evidence about the signer, not a safety guarantee.
- Record dates and size. Note creation and modification dates and the file size. Dates that coincide with an installer you knowingly ran are useful context; a file that appeared after a bundled download or an unsolicited pop-up deserves more scrutiny.
- Calculate a hash. In PowerShell, run
Get-FileHash -LiteralPath "C:fullpathpcspeedmaximizer.exe" -Algorithm SHA256, replacing the path with the one you recorded. Save the resulting SHA-256 value with your scan results. Do not treat a matching filename or signer as a substitute for a file-specific hash check. - Trace the source. Check your browser downloads, installer history and installed-app list. Microsoft says samples in this family are commonly obtained from third-party download sites or bundled installers. If you never intended to install PC Speed Maximizer, regard that as a strong reason to remove it.
How to interpret the evidence
| Finding | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Known application folder, expected installer, valid signer and no security detection | Lower risk, but not proof of safety | Check the hash and continue monitoring before allowing it to run |
| Temporary, downloads or randomly named folder | Consistent with an unsolicited or bundled installer | Do not launch it; scan and remove the associated app |
| DNS settings changed without your knowledge | A behavior Microsoft has associated with this software family | Scan, restore trusted DNS settings and review browser symptoms |
| Defender or another security product detects a PUA | Security software has matched characteristics of an unwanted-app family | Follow the product’s quarantine or removal action, then rescan |
| Valid digital signature only | Confirms a signer record, not that the program is desirable | Compare signer, path, hash and provenance together |
How do I stop pcspeedmaximizer.exe safely?
Stop prompts or browser pop-ups first, then scan and uninstall the associated application. Avoid clicking a support number, purchasing a license from an unexpected warning, or approving a security exception merely because the file is signed.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Close the program. Dismiss suspicious pop-ups without following their links. If the process is open, close its window. In Task Manager, you can select the process and choose End task after recording its file location.
- Disconnect risky sessions. Close the browser tab that produced the warning and disconnect from a network only if the program is actively contacting an unfamiliar service or a security professional instructs you to do so. Keep the computer available for downloading current security intelligence from a trusted connection.
- Update Microsoft Defender intelligence. Open Windows Security, choose Virus & threat protection, select Protection updates, and choose Check for updates. Current signatures improve the chance of detecting the relevant PUA samples.
- Run a full scan. From Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, select Full scan and start it. Let the scan finish, review detections and choose the recommended quarantine or removal action.
- Uninstall the application. On Windows 11 or Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older builds), select PC Speed Maximizer and choose Uninstall. Remove only the entry you have verified; do not delete a random system file solely because its name looks similar.
- Restart and check. Restart Windows, then confirm that the app entry, startup process and pop-ups are gone. Recheck the DNS settings and run another scan if the program returns.
What if Windows will not uninstall PC Speed Maximizer?
Blocked removal can result from a running process, a damaged uninstaller, missing permissions or a security product holding a file. Microsoft recommends cleaning detected threats before attempting removal again.
Try Windows’ built-in repair options
- Restart Windows and try the uninstall entry again. A restart can release files held by a process.
- In Settings > Apps > Installed apps, open the app’s menu. If Windows offers Advanced options, try Repair first; if that does not help, try Reset. Availability varies by app and Windows build, and Reset can remove the app’s local data.
- Use the Windows Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter when it is offered for a blocked or damaged uninstall record. Follow its prompts to remove the broken entry, then restart and rescan.
Remove persistence before repeating the uninstall
Open Task Manager’s Startup apps page and disable a verified PC Speed Maximizer entry so it cannot relaunch while you work. Also inspect Settings > Apps > Startup on supported Windows versions. Do not disable unrelated Microsoft, hardware or security entries without identifying their publisher and file path.
Use an offline scan when the program returns
If the process recreates itself, blocks scans or changes settings again after a restart, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options and choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Windows restarts into a separate scanning environment, which can inspect files before the normal desktop and startup programs load. Save open work first because the restart is automatic.
When should I use Microsoft Safety Scanner?
Microsoft Safety Scanner is a manually triggered tool intended to find and remove malware and try to reverse changes made by identified threats. It is useful as a second check when Defender’s normal scan does not explain recurring detections, browser redirects or a process that returns after uninstall. Download a current copy from Microsoft when you are ready to scan; the utility expires after a limited period, so an old copy should not be reused as if it were current.

Run it with administrative permission, choose the scan type, wait for completion and retain the result. A clean result does not prove that every unwanted program is gone; compare it with the Defender report, installed-app list and the file path you recorded.
How do I fix pcspeedmaximizer.exe errors that keep appearing?
The correct fix depends on what the error says and whether the executable is still present. A missing-file message after uninstall often means a leftover startup reference, while an alert that names a detected PUA calls for scanning and removal rather than replacing a DLL from a download site.
If the message appears at startup
- Write down the exact wording, error code, file path and time.
- Check Task Manager > Startup apps and disable only the verified entry.
- Search Installed apps for PC Speed Maximizer and remove it through Settings.
- Restart, run a full Defender scan and check whether the message is gone.
If the message says the file is missing
Do not download a replacement pcspeedmaximizer.exe from a DLL or “missing files” website. A missing-file alert can be a remnant of an incomplete uninstall; remove the startup reference or repair the uninstall record instead. If the alert names a different legitimate program, investigate that program separately rather than restoring this executable.
If the program changes browser behavior
Record unexpected redirects, advertising or DNS changes before resetting them. In Windows, open Settings > Network & internet, choose the active connection and review DNS assignment; restore the setting used by your trusted network or organization. Then reset unwanted browser extensions and run the full and offline scans described above.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat should I do if the file cannot be removed?
Escalate gradually and preserve evidence. Keep the original path, hash, signer details and scan reports so a technician can distinguish a PUA remnant from a different executable.

- Run Microsoft Defender Offline and rescan after Windows starts.
- Run the current Microsoft Safety Scanner and save its result.
- Try the Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter again after threats are cleaned.
- If Windows still cannot remove the app, contact the software publisher for an uninstall procedure or consider Reset this PC with the option to keep personal files. Back up important files first and verify that the backup opens before resetting.
A reset reinstalls Windows and removes applications, so it is an escalation step, not a first response to a single filename. If the computer belongs to an employer or school, involve its administrator before changing DNS, security settings or performing a reset.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do remediation options differ?
Use the least disruptive option that matches the evidence. The table separates the common decision points rather than assuming that every appearance of the filename requires a full reset.
| Situation | First choice | Escalate when |
|---|---|---|
| File is present, app uninstalls normally and scans are clean | Record evidence, uninstall, restart and rescan | Pop-ups, DNS changes or the process return |
| Windows lists the app but uninstall fails | Restart, try Repair or Reset, then use the Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter | The entry remains or security detections persist |
| Defender detects the PUA or the process relaunches | Quarantine, run a full scan and use Defender Offline | Offline scan cannot clean it |
| File appears in a temporary folder with no intentional installation | Do not open it; preserve the path and hash, then scan and remove the associated installer | Other accounts, browsers or DNS settings are affected |
| Windows remains unstable after cleaning | Review scan logs and obtain qualified support | Back up and use Reset this PC while keeping files |
What information is needed for a precise error diagnosis?
An exact error code is more useful than the filename alone. Record the Windows edition and build, whether the system is Windows 11, 10, 8 or 7, the complete file path, the message text, when it appears, the app’s install date, Defender’s detection name and whether the process returns after a restart.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Also note whether the file was intentionally installed, which account sees the error, and whether browser redirects or DNS changes occurred. With those details, support can distinguish an orphaned startup entry, a damaged uninstall registration, a PUA detection or a separate Windows component that merely mentions the same filename.
Can I simply delete pcspeedmaximizer.exe?
Deleting the executable may stop one process but leave its uninstall record, scheduled startup entry, browser changes or other bundled programs behind. Prefer a Defender scan followed by uninstalling the identified application. If a security product has quarantined the file, let it complete quarantine rather than manually restoring or replacing the file.

Manual deletion is reasonable only after you have documented the path, confirmed that it belongs to the unwanted application and disabled its startup mechanism. Empty the Recycle Bin only after the follow-up scan is complete and you are sure no legitimate program depends on that location.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can pcspeedmaximizer.exe be a legitimate file on a gaming PC?
The filename can exist on a system where the associated optimizer was deliberately installed, but legitimacy depends on the exact publisher, path, hash and installer source. A game, launcher or graphics driver does not normally require this optimizer executable, so verify before allowing it to run.
Will changing DNS settings remove the executable?
No. DNS settings control name resolution and may explain redirects, but they do not uninstall a Windows program or remove its startup entries. Record the current values, clean the application and then restore DNS through your network or organization’s documented settings.
What happens to my personal files if I use Microsoft Defender Offline?
The offline scan restarts Windows and checks files before the normal desktop loads; it is not a reset and is designed to leave personal documents in place. Save work first and expect the computer to be unavailable during the restart and scan.
Why did the warning appear only once?
A one-time alert can occur when Defender blocks a launch, when a bundled installer runs briefly or when a security service updates its reputation data. Check Protection history, Installed apps, startup entries and the recorded file path even if the pop-up does not return.
