perc2evt.exe is a legacy event-related executable from Dell PERC 2-series RAID-controller software, not a standard Windows process. A Dell PERC 2 driver manifest groups it with perc2.sys, perc2cin.dll and perc2mgt.inf for PERC 2, 2Si, 3Si and 3Di controllers. One archived Dell package, RAID-DRVR-R57577, lists a 167.8 KB copy dated 3 May 2002.
It is reasonable to regard the file as legitimate only when the computer has matching legacy Dell PERC hardware, the executable is in the directory created by the Dell package, and its properties and digital signature agree with that package. A copy in a temporary, Downloads or unrelated user folder—or one signed by a different publisher—should be isolated and scanned before it runs. Errors can come from a damaged package, a driver or firmware mismatch, a failing disk or controller, or a wider Windows problem.

perc2evt.exe belongs to the event-management side of Dell’s older PERC software stack. PERC 2 documentation describes several cooperating components: the PERC 2 API, FAST graphical interface, command-line interface, Event Snap In and Agent. An event executable can therefore appear beside storage drivers and management utilities even though it is not itself a disk driver.
The file is associated with hardware generations that are now obsolete. Newer Dell controllers use different management tools, so finding the name on a current server does not prove that the file is appropriate for that machine.

The old date is important context, not a safety certificate. Malware can use a familiar filename, and a legitimate file can become unusable when copied to an incompatible Windows installation.
Is perc2evt.exe safe?
The name alone cannot establish safety. Check provenance, location, signature and hardware together; a matching result on all four is much stronger evidence than a filename match.
Check the complete path
In Task Manager, right-click the process if it is running and choose Open file location. If it is listed in an installed Dell PERC package directory, that supports legitimacy. A copy under a random folder in AppData, a user profile, Temp, a browser download directory or a newly created directory deserves suspicion, particularly when no PERC software was deliberately installed.
Check properties and the signer
Right-click the file, select Properties, and record the Details and Digital Signatures tabs. Note the product name, file description, version, publisher, signing status and modification date. A missing signature, an invalid signature, or a publisher that does not match the storage vendor is a reason to stop the process and scan it rather than allow it to start.
Record a hash before changing anything
Preserve the path and error details first. In PowerShell, an administrator can calculate a SHA-256 hash with:
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 -Path "C:fullpathperc2evt.exe"
Keep the output with the file’s version and signature information. It gives an administrator or vendor a reproducible identity for the exact copy under investigation.
Confirm the machine actually has matching hardware
Look up the PowerEdge model and controller inventory in the system’s firmware setup, management interface or hardware inventory. The PERC 2, 2Si, 3Si and 3Di names in the old manifest are the relevant match. If the computer has no compatible PERC controller and no documented reason for installing the old package, treat the executable as untrusted until a scan and software-inventory review explain it.

Scan without launching the file
Use Microsoft Defender or your organization’s approved malware scanner on the file and its containing directory. In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, then select a custom scan that includes the file’s location. Follow your organization’s incident procedure if the scanner detects a threat; do not restore a quarantined copy merely because its filename looks familiar.
Why does perc2evt.exe keep giving an error?
An executable error is often a symptom of the storage stack rather than the underlying fault. Microsoft notes that “The root cause of stop errors is rarely a user-mode process.” A perc2evt.exe message can therefore point to several different layers.
- Damaged or incomplete software: a missing DLL, interrupted installation or incorrect removal can leave the event component unable to start.
- Driver mismatch: the PERC driver, management utility and Windows edition or architecture may not belong to the same release.
- Controller firmware trouble: a firmware hang can produce application errors, timeouts or blue screens even when the executable itself is intact.
- Disk or virtual-disk faults: degraded arrays, failing media or configuration alerts can trigger repeated events while the utility reports them.
- Windows startup changes: a newly installed service, update or security product can alter the conditions under which the legacy component starts.
- Imposter file: a malicious or altered file with the same name can crash, relaunch or generate unrelated warnings.
Write down the exact message, error code, executable path and timing. “At boot,” “when a service starts,” “at logon” and “when opening a management console” point to different parts of the stack.

How can I identify the event that is failing?
- Capture the message. Photograph or copy the complete dialog, including any module name, exception code and path. Note whether the message appears once or repeats.
- Open Event Viewer. Press
Win, search for Event Viewer, then inspect Windows Logs > System and Windows Logs > Application. Use Filter Current Log for the time of the failure and look for entries from the storage controller, disk, service-control manager or application error source. - Correlate timestamps. A perc2evt.exe application event immediately after a controller reset, disk warning or driver event is more likely a downstream symptom. Save the relevant event details before clearing logs or rebooting.
- Check startup and services. In Task Manager’s Startup apps tab and the Services console, identify the Dell component that launches the executable. Do not disable an unknown storage service on a production server until you understand whether it monitors an active array.
How do I troubleshoot perc2evt.exe safely?
Work from least destructive checks to changes that affect drivers, firmware or an active array. Ensure a current backup and a tested recovery path before modifying storage software on a server.
1. Isolate a startup-only failure in Safe Mode
Safe Mode loads only essential drivers and services. On Windows 10 or 11, open Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now; in the recovery menu choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then select Safe Mode. On systems that use a different recovery layout, the same Startup Settings menu can be reached from the Windows Recovery Environment.
If the message disappears in Safe Mode, disable one recently added startup item or service at a time, reboot normally and test. Do not remove the PERC driver itself as an experiment while the machine depends on that controller for its boot or data volume. If Windows remains unstable even in Safe Mode, prioritize hardware and system-driver diagnostics over application cleanup.
2. Match the package to the exact system
Identify the PowerEdge model, controller model, Windows release and system architecture. Obtain the storage driver and management package intended for that combination from Dell or the system vendor. Do not install a PERC 2 package simply because it contains a file with the expected name, and do not copy perc2evt.exe from another computer.

The PERC 2 guide documents dependencies between components during installation and removal. Follow that model’s documented sequence instead of deleting individual DLLs or removing the base driver while leaving the management layer behind. If the package offers a repair or complete uninstall, record the current version and create a rollback plan first.
3. Repair or reinstall only after preserving evidence
Before changing the package, save the executable path, hash, Properties information, Event Viewer entries and current driver version. Then use the vendor’s installer for the exact model and Windows version. A clean reinstall can replace missing files, but it will not repair a failing controller, disk or incompatible firmware.
4. Use the correct tool for newer controllers
Current Dell controller families generally use PERCCLI rather than the PERC 2 event executable. For a supported controller, use the model-appropriate PERCCLI package and commands; perccli64 show can display controller status, and Dell documentation also describes collecting TTY logs. Do not attempt to make a modern controller work by copying the obsolete executable into a new Windows installation.
5. Investigate firmware, disks and the array
If the error coincides with controller resets, degraded virtual disks, I/O timeouts or blue screens, run the system’s hardware diagnostics and inspect the controller logs. Dell event references separate controller, physical-disk, virtual-disk, firmware and configuration alerts, so the alert category can determine the next step.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA documented PERC incident was resolved by updating the affected controller firmware after a firmware hang. Firmware updates are model-specific and carry operational risk: verify the exact controller, read the release notes, schedule maintenance, confirm a backup and keep the previous firmware or recovery procedure available where the vendor supports it. Never interrupt a firmware update or power-cycle a server because an application dialog appears.
6. Apply Windows and BIOS updates appropriately
Install supported Windows updates and check BIOS or system-firmware guidance from the hardware vendor, but do not assume that a current Windows update makes a 2002-era management package compatible. If a problem began immediately after an update, use the documented rollback or restore process only after checking whether the storage vendor supports that Windows build.
Can I delete perc2evt.exe?
Do not delete it blindly on a system with an active or unknown PERC controller. Removing an event component may silence a message while leaving the underlying array, driver or firmware problem untouched, and it can break a management package that expects the file to be present.

When removal may be reasonable
Removal is safer when you have confirmed that the computer has no compatible PERC hardware, no service or startup entry depends on the file, the file failed its provenance checks or malware scan, and you have preserved evidence for an administrator. Prefer uninstalling the complete, identified software package through Settings > Apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features rather than deleting one executable.

If the file is suspicious but the machine’s role is unclear, isolate it with your security product and keep the quarantine record. On a production server, involve the administrator responsible for the array before disabling services or removing files. A quarantined copy and its hash allow later analysis without permitting it to run.
What if there is no PERC hardware?
First verify the inventory rather than relying on a consumer-facing device list: a controller can be integrated, attached through a backplane or documented under a broader storage name. Check installed programs, services, scheduled tasks and the original installer history for a Dell RAID package.
If no compatible hardware or package history exists, the file is not explained by the documented PERC 2 use case. Keep it from launching, scan the file and its parent directory, review recent downloads and startup changes, and escalate any detection through your organization’s security process. Do not download a replacement copy merely to make the error disappear.

Could a missing perc2evt.exe prevent an array from working?
The executable is an event-management component, while the storage driver and controller firmware handle core I/O. Removing it can still damage the management installation or hide alerts, so an array that appears healthy after deletion should be checked through the controller’s supported management interface.
What information should I provide to Dell support?
Provide the PowerEdge model, controller model, Windows edition and architecture, firmware and driver versions, the complete file path, file hash, signature details, exact error text and the matching Event Viewer entries. Include whether the array is degraded, whether the error occurs in Safe Mode, and what changed immediately before it began.
Is the 167.8 KB size a reliable authenticity test?
No. That size belongs to one archived package copy dated 3 May 2002. Updates, repackaging, architecture and tampering can change a file’s size, so signature, hash, path and package provenance are stronger checks.
