Do not install a replacement executable from an unrelated download site simply because an editor reports that a file is missing. Reinstall the package that originally supplied the compiler, then point your editor or integration at the restored installation.

- Read the marking on the chip or consult the board documentation to identify the exact PICAXE device.
- In the editor or project source, select the matching target. The documented directive for the 08M target is
#picaxe 08m. - Save the project, compile again, and only then attempt a download.
- If a third-party build system passes a target argument, update that setting as well; changing the editor selection alone does not correct a separate command-line configuration.
Do not select “08M” merely because the executable name appears in an error. The filename identifies a compiler mode; it does not identify the chip currently mounted on your board.
How do I fix “no hardware connected,” COM-port, and download errors?

1. Select the COM port assigned to the cable

5. Perform the hard reset at the right time
Start the download and then perform a hard reset when the chip is waiting in a command such as serin, kbin, or irin, or during a long pause. The reset timing matters because the bootloader must see the programming request while it is ready to receive it.

6. Follow the Programmer App sequence
- Open the compiled
.axefile in the Programmer App. - Select the correct COM port.
- Connect the board and power it.
- Click Program, then apply the required hard reset at the prompt or during the waiting window.
If the COM port is correct, the driver is installed, the board has stable power, and the reset is timed correctly, a download failure is more likely to involve the board, cable, connector, or program state than picaxe08m.exe itself.
What should I do if Windows Security quarantines the file?
Do not immediately restore a quarantined executable. First determine whether the detection concerns the official PICAXE package or an unrelated copy.
- Open Windows Security and read the detection name, file path, and Protection history entry.
- Compare the path and origin with the PICAXE installation you intentionally installed.

You do not need PICAXE hardware or an AXE027 cable merely to compile source code. You do need a compatible download connection to transfer a compiled program to a physical board. PICAXE identifies the AXE027 as a USB download cable for PICAXE project boards, and its Windows driver is part of the normal connection troubleshooting path.
If compilation works but every download attempt fails, testing with a known-good AXE027 cable, the correct driver, fresh 4.5V power, and a direct USB connection can separate a compiler problem from a hardware path problem. Replace hardware only after confirming the selected target and COM port.
