PilotshubApp.exe is associated with Microsoft Windows Feedback Hub. A normal installation is usually inside the protected WindowsApps folder, under a path such as C:Program FilesWindowsAppsMicrosoft.WindowsFeedbackHub_<version>_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwePilotshubApp.exe. However, the filename alone does not prove that a copy is genuine. A reported sample carried Microsoft product metadata but was not digitally signed, so you should verify the complete path and properties, then scan the file with Microsoft Defender before deciding whether it is safe.

If the file is legitimate but keeps crashing, update Windows and Feedback Hub, run the security checks below, and preserve the exact error, package version and Event Viewer details before attempting removal. Do not download a replacement executable from a random EXE or DLL site.

What is pilotshubapp.exe?

PilotshubApp.exe is the executable name used by part of Microsoft Windows Feedback Hub. Feedback Hub is the Windows app for sending Microsoft reports and viewing or voting on feedback. The component is normally installed as part of a Microsoft Store package rather than as a standalone program you download from the web.

A file report for PilotshubApp.exe lists these identifying fields:

  • Product name: Microsoft Windows Feedback Hub
  • Company: Microsoft Corporation
  • Internal name: PilotshubApp
  • Typical location: C:Program FilesWindowsAppsMicrosoft.WindowsFeedbackHub_<version>_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwePilotshubApp.exe

The version string in the folder varies with the installed package. WindowsApps is a protected directory, so you may need to open the file location from Task Manager or an error dialog instead of browsing to it directly.

Is pilotshubapp.exe safe or a virus?

It can be a legitimate Feedback Hub component, but you cannot establish that from the name alone. Malware can use a familiar filename, place a counterfeit in a user-writable folder, or copy Microsoft-like metadata. Treat safety as a provenance check: location, properties, signature and current antivirus results must agree.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The documented sample identified the product and company as Microsoft, yet the sample was not digitally signed. That does not prove that every PilotshubApp.exe file is malicious, nor does it prove that every copy is safe. Check the signature on your own file rather than relying on a historical report. The same report said that none of 57 VirusTotal scanners detected that particular sample at the time; this is a dated result for one file, not a guarantee for yours.

A user poll on the same page had 24 of 42 respondents vote for removal. That poll is not a malware detection rate and should not determine what you do with a system file.

How can I verify my copy of PilotshubApp.exe?

Use this sequence before deleting, allowing or replacing anything.

  1. Open the location. In Task Manager, right-click the PilotshubApp.exe process and choose Open file location. If the process is not running, use the path shown in the error dialog. Copy the complete path, including the package folder and version.
  2. Compare the folder. A legitimate-looking copy should be under C:Program FilesWindowsAppsMicrosoft.WindowsFeedbackHub_<version>.... A copy in AppData, Downloads, Temp or an unrelated user-created directory is a warning sign.
  3. Inspect Properties. Right-click the file, select Properties, and review the Details tab. Compare Product name, Company, Internal name or Original filename and version with the Feedback Hub values above. Mismatched fields, an unknown publisher or missing Microsoft details require further investigation.
  4. Check the signature. On the Digital Signatures tab, inspect the signer and signature status. A valid signature would strengthen the file’s provenance. The historical sample was unsigned, so do not assume that an unsigned result is normal; evaluate your copy and its path together.
  5. Record before changing. Note the full path, package version, file version, exact error text and the time of the failure. These details are useful if you need to review Windows event logs or obtain support.
  6. Scan the actual file and the system. Update Microsoft Defender security intelligence, then run a full scan. Scan the file directly as well if Windows Security offers that option. A detection should be handled through Windows Security rather than by downloading a replacement executable.

How to interpret the evidence

No single check authenticates a file. A WindowsApps path supports the claim that the file came from the Feedback Hub package, while matching Product name, Company, Internal name or Original filename and version details make the claim more coherent. A valid digital signature would add another independent signal. Conversely, a user-writable location, contradictory metadata, an unknown publisher or a Defender detection should move the file into the suspicious category.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An online scanner result is also limited. The reported sample had zero detections from 57 scanners when it was checked, but another copy can have a different hash, modification time or behavior. Treat that historical result as context only. The local Defender scan, its detection name and the path recorded in Protection history are more useful for deciding what is on your computer now.

Why might Windows Defender flag PilotshubApp.exe?

Defender may flag a counterfeit copy, a modified package, a potentially unwanted application or behavior associated with another program. Microsoft defines potentially unwanted applications as software that can slow a machine, show unexpected advertising or install other software that is more harmful or annoying. A warning therefore deserves review even when the filename resembles a Windows component.

Review Protection history

Open Windows Security → Protection history. This page records Defender detections, potentially unwanted apps and some disabled-protection events. Open the individual entry to see the detected path, threat name and action taken.

  • If the path is outside the Feedback Hub WindowsApps package or the metadata is inconsistent, quarantine the item when offered.
  • If you cannot establish that an item is safe, do not choose Allow on device. Microsoft warns that allowing an uncertain item can expose your data or device.
  • After remediation, run another full scan and check whether the same path reappears.

Keep the detection name and action with your notes. A quarantine event for a file in AppData means something different from a detection involving the installed WindowsApps package. If the same file returns, record which process or installation restored it rather than repeatedly allowing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use an offline scan when unwanted software persists

Persistent unwanted software can interfere with normal scans. Microsoft recommends updating Defender, uninstalling software you do not need and using Microsoft Defender Offline when unwanted software continues to return. An offline scan restarts the computer and checks before the normal Windows session loads, which can prevent a running unwanted process from hiding its files.

Save open work before starting an offline scan because Windows must restart. After Windows loads again, review Protection history and run another full scan. If Defender cannot start, real-time protection repeatedly turns off, or the scan fails, treat that protection problem as urgent instead of assuming the PilotshubApp.exe message is harmless.

How do I fix pilotshubapp.exe application errors?

The right fix depends on whether the file is suspicious or is a genuine Feedback Hub component that is failing. Do not start by deleting the executable: deletion can damage the package and will not remove the cause if another program is launching a counterfeit copy.

1. Capture the exact failure

Common messages include “pilotshubapp.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close,” “PilotshubApp.exe has stopped working,” “End Program – pilotshubapp.exe. This program is not responding,” “pilotshubapp.exe is not a valid Win32 application,” and an initialization error. Record the wording, any hexadecimal error code, the path displayed and whether the failure occurs at startup, when opening Feedback Hub or during another action.

2. Update Windows

Install pending Windows updates and restart. Updates can replace damaged package files and refresh the Windows components on which Store apps depend. After the restart, reproduce the problem once and note whether the same executable path appears.

3. Update Feedback Hub through Microsoft Store

Open Microsoft Store, select Library (the label may appear as Downloads and updates on older Windows builds), and check for app updates. Install the Feedback Hub update if one is offered, then restart Windows. If the Store shows no update, do not obtain an EXE from a download site; the legitimate component is delivered with the Feedback Hub package.

4. Run the security workflow

Update Defender security intelligence and run a full scan. If a detection remains, use Protection history to review and quarantine it. When unwanted software persists, run Defender Offline and scan again after Windows starts normally.

5. Check whether Defender protection was disabled

If real-time protection is off, or Defender services appear stopped without your having changed them, treat that as a separate security issue. Review the Defender service and driver statuses, restore protection according to Windows Security’s prompts and run Microsoft Safety Scanner as Microsoft documents. Do not dismiss a disabled service simply because the PilotshubApp.exe error disappears.

Microsoft Safety Scanner is a checking tool, not a substitute for an active antivirus configuration. Use it alongside the documented service checks, then confirm that Defender’s normal protection is enabled after the scan. A sudden service stop, repeated protection changes or other unwanted software warrants professional assistance.

6. Inspect the event record before advanced changes

Open Event Viewer and look around the failure time for an application-error entry. Save the event’s faulting application name, exception code, module name and package version. These details distinguish a damaged app package from a broader Windows or driver problem and prevent you from making irreversible changes without evidence.

7. Decide whether removal is appropriate

If Defender identifies a malicious or unwanted file outside the Feedback Hub package, follow the quarantine and removal action shown in Windows Security and uninstall the unwanted program that installed it. If the file is inside the Microsoft.WindowsFeedbackHub package and its metadata matches, do not manually delete it from WindowsApps. Preserve the evidence and use Windows’ normal app-management options or Microsoft support guidance for package-specific repair.

Can I delete pilotshubapp.exe?

Do not delete it solely because it appears in an error message. A genuine copy belongs to the Feedback Hub package, and removing one executable from WindowsApps can leave the package incomplete while failing to fix the underlying crash.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Deletion is appropriate only as part of a confirmed security cleanup, such as Defender quarantining a counterfeit file in an unexpected folder. If you do not use Feedback Hub, remove or manage the app through Windows’ standard installed-app controls rather than taking ownership of WindowsApps and deleting individual files. If the error returns after a normal uninstall, update or security cleanup, keep the path and event details for support instead of downloading a replacement.

What distinguishes a legitimate and suspicious copy?

Check More consistent with Feedback Hub Warning sign
Location Inside C:Program FilesWindowsAppsMicrosoft.WindowsFeedbackHub_<version>... AppData, Downloads, Temp or an unrelated folder
Product metadata Microsoft Windows Feedback Hub and Microsoft Corporation Unknown publisher or mismatched product fields
Signature A valid signature supports the claimed provenance An unsigned file requires additional verification; the documented sample was unsigned
Defender status Defender and real-time protection remain enabled Defender service or real-time protection is disabled unexpectedly
Detection response Review the event in Protection History and quarantine when uncertain Choosing Allow without evidence

What should I do for a “not a valid Win32 application” error?

First check the path and file properties. That message can appear when the file is damaged, incomplete, incompatible with the current Windows environment or not actually the Feedback Hub executable despite sharing its name. Run Windows Update, update Feedback Hub through Microsoft Store and complete a full Defender scan. If the file is outside WindowsApps or has inconsistent metadata, quarantine it rather than trying to repair it with a downloaded copy.

What should I do if PilotshubApp.exe keeps crashing?

Reproduce the crash after updating Windows and Feedback Hub, then compare the event record with the package version and path you saved. A repeated crash from a correctly located file is not, by itself, evidence of infection. Avoid repeatedly ending the process or deleting files; those actions can hide the symptom while leaving the package or system condition unchanged.

If the crash occurs only when Feedback Hub opens, note whether Microsoft Store reports an available update and whether the event names PilotshubApp.exe or another module. If the path changes between attempts, investigate each path separately; a legitimate package file and a same-named file elsewhere should not be treated as one incident.

When should I seek additional help?

Escalate when any of these conditions apply:

  • The file is in an unexpected folder, has contradictory metadata or returns after quarantine.
  • Defender cannot start, real-time protection repeatedly turns off or scans fail.
  • Other applications show similar crashes, unexplained advertising or unwanted installations.
  • The same error continues after Windows and Store updates, a full scan and an offline scan.
  • You need to preserve business or personal data and cannot determine whether the file is safe.

Provide the exact path, Product and Company fields, signature status, Defender detection name, package version, error code and relevant Event Viewer entry. Do not send the executable to an untrusted upload service or follow instructions that ask you to disable protection permanently.

As an optional shortcut after the built-in Windows checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, review settings that load CPU, RAM or disk, and provide tools such as a real-time boost, file shredder and app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, offers a category-based free trial of at least two days before a paid subscription, complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and results vary—no tool repairs every crash.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an unsigned PilotshubApp.exe automatically mean malware?

No. An unsigned result removes one piece of provenance evidence, but it does not identify the author or behavior by itself. Weigh the signature together with the exact WindowsApps path, metadata and current Defender findings.

Where should a legitimate PilotshubApp.exe normally be located?

Usually inside the Microsoft.WindowsFeedbackHub package under C:Program FilesWindowsApps, with a versioned folder and the x64 package identifier. AppData, Downloads, Temp or an unrelated folder deserves investigation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I trust a clean online scanner result for my file?

A clean result is limited to the exact sample and scan date; it cannot authenticate another copy that has a different hash, path or modification time. Keep Defender updated and use Windows Security’s local scan and Protection history as the primary decision record.

Why is Windows Defender flagging a file with a Microsoft product name?

The file may be counterfeit, modified, potentially unwanted or associated with another unwanted program. Check the detected path and metadata in Protection history, quarantine when uncertain, and do not select Allow without evidence.

What does Protection history tell me?

It records Defender detections, potentially unwanted applications and some disabled-protection events, including the path, threat name and action. Use those details to distinguish a package component from a same-named file elsewhere.

Will reinstalling Windows fix every PilotshubApp.exe error?

A full Windows reinstall is a last-resort system recovery, not a first-line fix for one Feedback Hub process. Preserve your error and security evidence and complete updates and scans first, because a counterfeit file or disabled protection can survive as a separate problem if you restore unsafe software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the error appear only when I open Feedback Hub?

Feedback Hub starts its package components on demand, so a damaged package or blocked dependency may remain unnoticed until the app launches. Compare the package version before and after a Microsoft Store update and check the application-error event created at launch.

Can I remove Feedback Hub instead of deleting the executable?

If you do not need the app, use Windows’ normal installed-app management options. Do not take ownership of WindowsApps or remove one executable by hand; that can leave an incomplete package and does not address a counterfeit file elsewhere.

What if Defender services or real-time protection are disabled?

Treat that as a separate security issue. Review the Defender service and driver statuses, follow Windows Security’s restoration prompts and run Microsoft Safety Scanner as documented. Do not assume the PilotshubApp.exe error is harmless because protection is off.

The Bottom Line

PilotshubApp.exe is normally part of Microsoft Windows Feedback Hub, but its filename is not proof of authenticity. Verify the complete WindowsApps path, metadata and signature, update Defender, review Protection history and quarantine uncertain detections. For crashes, update Windows and Feedback Hub, capture Event Viewer details and avoid deleting or downloading replacement files until you know which copy you are dealing with.
