plugin_host-3.3.exe is normally Sublime Text’s separate plugin process, using the editor’s legacy embedded Python 3.3 runtime. It is not a Windows system component. The filename alone cannot prove that a copy is safe: verify its location, digital signature, hash and origin before deciding whether to keep or remove it.

Sublime HQ’s API documentation explains that Sublime Text runs plugins in a process separate from the main editor interface. That process uses an executable named plugin_host. The 3.3 suffix identifies the legacy Python 3.3.6 plugin runtime, not a Windows component or a separate Microsoft service.
All plugins assigned to that runtime share one host process. Isolation means a faulty package can terminate the host without necessarily closing the editor itself, although the affected packages stop working until Sublime Text restarts. A message about the host therefore points first to plugin loading, package compatibility or Sublime’s own data, rather than automatically indicating a damaged Windows installation.

What does the 3.3 runtime mean?
Older Sublime builds defaulted plugins to an embedded Python 3.3.6 environment. Later builds added newer runtimes and compatibility selectors. Current builds can disable Python 3.3 by default, so a legacy package may trigger a host failure or require migration to a newer runtime.
Is plugin_host-3.3.exe safe?
A copy associated with a genuine Sublime Text installation can be legitimate, but the name is not an identity certificate. Check four pieces of evidence together: the complete path, the signer, the cryptographic hash and how the file arrived on the computer.
Evidence that supports a legitimate copy
- The executable is inside the Sublime Text installation directory created by an installer, update or known portable archive.
- Properties → Digital Signatures shows a valid signature naming Sublime HQ Pty Ltd when that particular build is signed.

Why reports about the same filename can disagree
Third-party malware records document different files that happened to use this filename. ThreatInfo records analyzed on January 5, 2026, list one 3 MB sample with MD5 8e66c9f24a359d09a444cfb32c8c9283 observed in a Recycle Bin path and another 2 MB sample with MD5 9e8ce683dd0609b0d771ea16caaade8a observed under Program Files. GridinSoft gave both records a Trojan.Heur! verdict. Those are sample-specific heuristic detections, not proof that every Sublime copy with this name is malicious.

File.net likewise associates the filename with Sublime Text while warning that copies outside a trusted installation path may be disguised malware; its percentage rating is only a heuristic. FreeFixer documents a Sublime-related sample carrying a valid Sublime HQ Pty Ltd signature and publishes a sample hash. Use such records as leads for comparison, never as a universal verdict without matching your exact file.
How can I verify a local copy?
Do the checks before deleting or quarantining anything. Preserving the original path, hash and metadata gives you evidence for a security review and makes it possible to identify the exact build later.
- Locate the running file. Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc, findplugin_host-3.3.exeunder Processes or Details, right-click it and choose Open file location. Copy the complete path into a note. A Sublime installation path is more plausible than a random temporary, profile, download or Recycle Bin directory. - Inspect the signature. Right-click the file, select Properties, open Digital Signatures, select the signer and choose Details. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the signer is Sublime HQ Pty Ltd when the build is expected to be signed. An absent, invalid or unrelated signer raises the risk level.
- Record a cryptographic hash. In PowerShell, run

Compare the result only with a trusted copy for the same build; do not label a file bad merely because it differs from either ThreatInfo sample. - Check provenance. Look at the file’s creation and modification times and your Sublime installer, update, portable archive or package history. If you did not install Sublime, cannot explain the file’s arrival or find it in an unexpected directory, stop launching it while you investigate.
- Preserve evidence before removal. Save the path, signature details, hash and timestamps. If security software later quarantines the file, these details let you distinguish a false alarm from a replacement or tampered executable.
Why does Sublime Text say that plugin_host-3.3 has exited unexpectedly?
The message means that the shared plugin process terminated. It does not by itself mean that Windows is broken or that the executable is malware.
Sublime issue #6101 records the exact wording, “error: plugin_host-3.3 has exited unexpectedly, some plugin functionality won’t be available until Sublime Text has been restarted.” In that report, package-loading activity immediately preceded the error in build 4152. Issue #6260 describes failures involving both plugin_host-3.3 and plugin_host-3.8 in build 4169 and is marked fixed in milestone 4181.
Common causes
- A package crashes while it is loading or handling an event.
- A package is incompatible with the Python runtime selected by the installed Sublime build.
- User data, package metadata or a portable installation is damaged.
- A transition between legacy and newer plugin runtimes exposes an old package.
- The executable is not the Sublime binary you expected, in which case a security investigation is required instead of ordinary package troubleshooting.

Follow these steps in order. Each step narrows the cause while preserving a way to restore your settings and packages.

1. Update Sublime Text first
Install the newest build offered through Sublime Text’s official vendor channel. The official News page lists Build 4213 on September 21, 2026. A current build may contain a host fix and can change the default runtime behavior, so record your current build before updating.
2. Reproduce the problem in Safe Mode
Sublime’s Safe Mode disables customizations and uses a clean alternate data directory. Close every Sublime window, then on Windows start it with subl --safe-mode. Alternatively, hold Shift+Alt while launching after the application is fully closed.
Use the editor normally long enough to reproduce the action that caused the error. If the host does not fail in Safe Mode, the installation can launch and the likely fault is in a package, setting or user-data file rather than the core executable.
3. Isolate packages systematically
Exit Safe Mode and disable or remove packages added or updated shortly before the first failure. Restart Sublime after each change and repeat the same action. If the error disappears, restore packages one at a time until the failure returns; the last package restored is the leading suspect.

4. Rebuild a damaged user-data directory
Close Sublime Text. In File Explorer, enter %APPDATA% in the address bar. Move Sublime Text to a backup folder outside %APPDATA%; for older installations, the directory may be Sublime Text 3. Do not permanently delete the folder.
Start Sublime again. It creates a fresh data directory with default settings. Test the editor before copying anything back. If the crash is gone, recover settings and packages selectively from the backup, testing after each group. Copying the entire old directory at once can reintroduce the damaged file.
5. Decide how to handle Python 3.3 compatibility
Build 4213 states that Python 3.3 is disabled by default. Its settings include "disable_plugin_host_3.3": false to re-enable the legacy host. Leave the modern default in place unless a known package genuinely requires Python 3.3.
Prefer updating or replacing that package. Re-enabling the runtime is a compatibility decision, not a general repair and not a safety control. If you do change the setting, make one change at a time and record it so you can reverse it after migrating the package.
6. Investigate a suspicious executable separately
If the file is outside the expected Sublime directory, unsigned, signed by an unrelated publisher or mismatched against a trusted installer, stop launching it. Preserve the path and hash, disconnect the file from normal use and run a current full anti-malware scan. Quarantine it only after preserving the evidence, then reinstall Sublime Text from the official channel and restore only packages you trust.

Can I disable or delete plugin_host-3.3.exe?
You should not delete an executable from an active Sublime installation merely because its name looks unfamiliar. Removing it can break plugin features, cause repeated repair prompts or leave the installation incomplete.
If your goal is to stop the legacy runtime, first update packages and use the current runtime defaults. In Build 4213, the documented setting "disable_plugin_host_3.3": false explicitly controls whether Python 3.3 is re-enabled; changing that setting is safer than deleting files. If the copy fails the location, signature or provenance checks, treat it as a possible unwanted file and reinstall after a malware scan rather than trying to “fix” it by manually replacing the executable.

- Do not assume the filename proves either safety or infection.
- Do not use a third-party sample hash as a universal known-bad signature.
- Do not delete the entire Sublime data directory before making a backup.
- Do not re-enable Python 3.3 simply because a package is old; first look for an updated package.
- Do not restore all backed-up packages at once, because that can hide the package that caused the crash.
- Do not run an unexplained copy from a temporary or Recycle Bin path while investigating it.
