precomp038.exe is not a recognized Windows system component. It is described as a filename variant of precomp.exe that often appears in a per-user temporary installer directory without publisher, version, or digital-signature information. That makes an unknown copy untrusted, but the filename alone cannot prove that it is malware. Reports differ by sample: one related sample was detected by 6 of 56 scanners, while a 2015 analysis of a file named precomp038.exe was detected by 0 of 55 vendors and warned that its verdict could be outdated. Do not launch the file to test it. Identify the exact copy, preserve its evidence, scan it with Windows security tools, and repair Windows only after malware handling.
What is precomp038.exe?
precomp038.exe is an executable filename associated with a variant of precomp.exe, not with a documented Windows component. A related filename listing describes copies found in user-writable temporary installer folders, with no stated vendor, product version, or publisher signature. Installers sometimes unpack helper programs into temporary directories, so that location can have a legitimate explanation; it is also a common place for unwanted programs to hide. The path and origin of your particular file matter more than the name.

FreeFixer records a related precomp.exe sample detected by 6 of 56 antivirus scanners (11 percent; listing accessed in 2026). The labels included generic trojan and backdoor detections. A separate Hybrid Analysis/Falcon Sandbox report for one precomp038.exe sample from 2015 reported 0 of 55 antivirus vendors detecting it, while warning that the verdict might be outdated. Those results concern specific uploaded files, not every executable carrying this name.
Microsoft defines malware as malicious software and distinguishes potentially unwanted applications from malware. A clean result from one scan does not certify a file, and a detection of a related sample does not prove that your copy is malicious. Treat an unidentified copy as untrusted until its origin, signature, hash, and current scan results support a decision.

Is precomp038.exe safe or a virus?
There is no universal safe-or-malicious verdict based on the filename. A copy with no publisher information in a temporary folder deserves investigation, especially if it appeared without an installation you recognize. Conversely, an installer helper created by software you intentionally installed may be harmless. Never execute an unknown copy merely to see what happens.
Evidence that raises concern
- The file is in
%LOCALAPPDATA%Temp,%TEMP%,%APPDATA%, or another user-writable directory and you cannot identify the parent installer. - Properties show no publisher, product, version, or valid digital signature.
- It launches at startup, recreates itself after deletion, opens network connections, or is associated with unfamiliar scheduled tasks or registry entries.
- Current security scans detect the exact file or report behavior associated with a trojan, backdoor, or another unwanted program.
Evidence that supports a legitimate installer component
- The file was created during a software installation from a source you trust and is inside that application’s documented installation or extraction path.
- The parent application’s uninstaller removes the file, and the executable does not persist after the installation completes.
- A valid signature belongs to the expected software publisher, and the file hash agrees with a trusted release record.
None of these checks is conclusive alone. Compare the exact path, origin, hash, signature, persistence behavior, and current scan result rather than relying on crowd-vote percentages or a matching filename.
How do I identify the exact precomp038.exe file?
Start by establishing which copy Windows is using. Do this before deleting anything so you retain the information needed for a security decision.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. If the process is listed, right-click it and choose Open file location. If it is not running, search File Explorer forprecomp038.exeand note every result. - Record the complete path, file size, creation and modification dates, and the name of the parent folder. A temporary path is a warning sign, not proof of infection.
- Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect Details for product, version, and copyright information. On the Digital Signatures tab, check whether a signature exists, whether it is valid, and which publisher is named.
- Calculate a SHA-256 hash from an elevated or regular PowerShell window without running the file:
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 -LiteralPath "C:fullpathprecomp038.exe". Replace the path with the one you recorded. Save the output for comparison with a trusted software release or a security service that accepts hashes. - Write down how the file arrived: an installer you downloaded, a game-mod package, an archive, an email attachment, or an unexplained appearance. Do not assume that a name match means your file is the same sample described by a security report.
If the executable is currently running and you suspect compromise, avoid opening it or interacting with its window. Photograph or copy the path and metadata from a clean workflow if possible.

Can I delete precomp038.exe?
You can remove an unneeded temporary copy after scanning it, but manual deletion is not the safest first response when the file may be part of an active infection or a legitimate installer. Quarantine or removal through Windows Security preserves a record and can handle related components. If the file belongs to software you recognize, uninstall that parent application first and let its uninstaller remove the helper.
If it has never been opened
- Leave the file closed. Do not double-click it, run it from a command prompt, or allow a browser download prompt to launch it.
- Scan the exact file with Windows Security. If it is detected, choose the security product’s quarantine or remove action rather than dragging it to the Recycle Bin.
- After the scan, remove the original installer or archive only if you no longer need it for evidence or a trusted reinstallation.
If it ran or keeps returning
Do not rely on deletion alone. A process can be restored by a startup entry, scheduled task, service, or another file. Disconnect networking and follow the persistence checks below, then run an offline scan.
How do I scan precomp038.exe with Microsoft Defender?
Use current security intelligence and scan the whole system, not just the named file. Menu names can vary slightly by Windows release, but the Windows Security workflow is consistent.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu and select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection updates, select Check for updates, and let the security-intelligence update finish.
- Under Current threats, select Scan options, choose Full scan, and start it. A full scan can take a long time on a large drive; keep the computer connected to power.
- Review the result in Protection history. Record the detection name, affected path, and action taken. Quarantine or remove a detection through Windows Security.
- If the file persists, the process restarts, or the full scan finds a serious threat, return to Scan options, choose Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan), and select Scan now. Windows restarts into a trusted scanning environment and reports the result after booting again.
Use trusted download sources, keep Windows and applications updated, and do not install a second “fixer” offered by a pop-up or unofficial mirror. If policy permits, submit the hash or file to a reputable security-analysis service from a clean workflow; uploading a file can disclose proprietary or personal data, so check your organization’s rules first.

What should I do if precomp038.exe may have run?
If the executable ran, or if Windows Security reports a serious detection, isolate the computer before investigating persistence. Microsoft Security Intelligence advises disconnecting wired, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth networking so a possible unwanted program cannot communicate while you clean it.
- Unplug Ethernet, turn off Wi-Fi, and disable Bluetooth. Do not reconnect until scanning and cleanup are complete.
- From Task Manager, note unfamiliar processes and their file locations. Do not terminate a Windows process solely because its name looks unfamiliar; verify its path and signature.
- Inspect the startup locations: in Registry Editor, review the
RunandRunOncekeys under the user and machine branches, and inspect the Startup folder accessible from the Start menu. Remove or disable only entries you can positively identify as unwanted, keeping a backup or export before registry changes. - Review recently created files in
%TEMP%,%LOCALAPPDATA%, and%PROGRAMDATA%. Look for names and timestamps that appeared with the executable, but do not delete system or application files solely because they are unfamiliar. - Run a Microsoft Defender Offline scan, then a full scan after Windows restarts. Recheck Protection history for follow-up actions.
- If the executable was opened or suspicious activity occurred, change critical-account passwords from a clean device. Prioritize email, banking, password-manager, and game accounts, and enable multifactor authentication where available.
Reconnect the network only after scans are clean and persistence entries have been addressed. If you cannot establish what changed, preserve logs and seek professional incident-response help rather than repeatedly running the file.

How do I fix precomp038.exe application errors?
Messages associated with the related precomp.exe name include “has encountered a problem and needs to close,” “has stopped working,” “End Program – precomp.exe. This program is not responding,” “is not a valid Win32 application,” and an application-initialization failure. These are symptoms, not diagnoses. A damaged installer component, an incomplete or incompatible executable, or an unwanted file can produce similar wording.
When the file belongs to a known application
- Finish malware checks first. Do not repair or reinstall software while an active threat is still possible.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows) and locate the parent application. Use its Uninstall option.
- Restart Windows, download the current installer only from the publisher’s trusted source, and reinstall. If the error began after an update, check the application’s documented compatibility requirements and support notes.
- Keep the original error path and hash. If the newly installed copy has a different path, signature, or hash, treat it as a separate file rather than assuming the problem is solved.
When the file is unknown or the error returns after uninstalling
Do not reinstall the unknown executable. Repeat the offline and full scans, inspect startup and temporary locations, and check whether another process recreates it. A recurring file indicates persistence or a legitimate installer that is still being invoked; the parent process must be identified.

When Windows itself reports continuing corruption
Run system-file repairs only after malware handling and after saving important work. Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin), approve the elevation prompt, and run these commands in order:
sfc /scannow
Wait for verification to reach 100 percent. System File Checker repairs protected Windows files when it can.DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Allow the Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool to complete its repair of the running Windows image. It may take time and can appear paused.- Restart Windows and run
sfc /scannowagain if Windows reports that repairs were made or were pending. - Run another Defender scan after rebooting. System-file repair does not identify or remove an unknown third-party executable.
If either command reports that it could not complete, record the exact message and error code. Repeated failures, blue screens, or inability to boot warrant Windows recovery tools or a qualified technician rather than random registry edits.

How can I compare a legitimate installer copy with a suspicious one?
Use a consistent evidence checklist instead of comparing filenames. The following questions separate an expected helper from an unexplained executable:
| Check | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Publisher and signature | Does Properties show a valid signature from the expected publisher? | A missing signature is a warning, while a valid signature ties the file to a publisher; neither alone proves safe behavior. |
| Path and origin | Where was it created, and which installer or application created it? | Temporary user folders and unexplained downloads require more scrutiny than a documented application directory. |
| Hash | Does the SHA-256 value match a trusted release record? | Hashes distinguish exact files even when filenames are identical. |
| Current scans | What does an up-to-date full or offline scan report for this exact copy? | Historical reports and related samples cannot substitute for a current scan of your file. |
| Persistence | Does it create startup, Run, RunOnce, scheduled-task, or service entries? | Unexpected persistence is a stronger warning than a one-time installer helper. |
| Parent application | Does uninstalling the known application remove the file and stop the error? | A clean removal path supports an installer explanation; recurrence after uninstall needs further investigation. |
What should I do if scans are clean but the error remains?
A clean scan does not explain every crash. Check whether the error appears only while installing or launching one application, whether the application is compatible with your Windows edition, and whether the installer download was complete. Remove the affected application through its uninstaller, restart, and obtain a fresh installer from its official source. If the same error appears across unrelated programs, examine Windows Event Viewer for the application-error event and continue with the SFC and DISM sequence above.

Do not suppress the warning by renaming the file, adding an exclusion, or disabling Defender. Those actions hide evidence and can allow an unwanted program to run. If a trusted publisher can confirm the file’s hash and signature, retain that confirmation with the installer records.
How do I prevent a repeat problem?
- Keep Windows, browsers, games, launchers, and security intelligence updated.
- Download installers and game utilities from the publisher or a verified store, not from pop-ups, cracks, or unofficial mirrors.
- Leave SmartScreen and real-time protection enabled unless a documented support procedure requires a temporary change.
- Review installer dialogs for bundled software and decline anything you did not request.
- Maintain verified backups on separate, unconnected storage. A USB flash drive can serve as offline backup media for important documents and configuration files; it does not identify or repair
precomp038.exe. - Keep a record of important installers, their source, version, and hash so a future temporary file can be compared with a known-good copy.
These precautions reduce the chance of reinfection and make it easier to distinguish a normal installer helper from an executable that appeared without a clear reason.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I upload precomp038.exe to a malware scanner?
You can submit its SHA-256 hash first, which may reveal an existing reputation without sharing the file. Uploading the binary can expose proprietary code, saved data, or personal information, so check your employer’s or game developer’s policy before sending it.
Why did Microsoft Defender find nothing when another scanner flagged a related file?
Different products use different signatures, behavior rules, and update schedules, and the reports may concern different samples. Compare the exact path and hash, update Defender, and use a full followed by an offline scan instead of treating either historical result as definitive.
Will deleting the Temp folder stop the error?
It may remove a leftover installer file, but it will not remove startup entries or another process that recreates the executable. Identify the parent application and check persistence before clearing temporary files.
