Project Windless is an in-development open-world action RPG from KRAFTON Montréal Studio, set in the fantasy world of Lee Yeongdo’s The Bird That Drinks Tears. What is Project Windless?
Project Windless is an open-world action RPG being developed primarily by KRAFTON Montréal Studio, with support from KRAFTON’s South Korean team. The studio frames the project as an ambitious fantasy adventure, but that is promotional language rather than a confirmed measure of its scope. What has been announced is the broad premise and intended design, not a finished feature list or independently verified gameplay performance.
Is Project Windless based on a book?
Yes. The game is set in the universe of The Bird That Drinks Tears, a Korean fantasy novel series by Lee Yeongdo. It is not presented as a direct retelling of the books: the game’s story is set well before them, at a period of rising tensions and the birth of a new kingdom. KRAFTON describes the setting as approximately 1,500 years before the original novel; the studio’s announcement more generally says it is more than a thousand years earlier. Who is the bird warrior?
The player takes the role of a mythical Rekon warrior. The studio describes Rekons as a nomadic humanoid bird people known for their size and physical strength. They are not invulnerable: the announcement points to fear of water as one of their vulnerabilities, alongside the characters’ individual beliefs and perspectives. What gameplay has KRAFTON described?
The studio says it wants players to choose their own direction through an open world, with exploration, hidden stories, alliances and warfare. Méthé described the goal as an open world with “as little hand-holding as possible.” That states the intended approach; the announcement does not establish how the finished game will implement it in practice.

Exploration and choices
The reveal emphasizes curiosity and player-led exploration rather than a tightly guided route. Alliances and warfare are also part of the premise, but the studio has not detailed specific systems, quest structures or consequences for player choices.
Large-scale battles
KRAFTON Montréal describes encounters with dozens or sometimes hundreds of enemies, whose crowds may move, flank, surround and react to the player. KRAFTON’s corporate announcement says its “Mass Technology” approach is intended to support battlefields with thousands of warriors and large creatures.
