purevpnservice.exe is normally the Windows background service installed with the PureVPN desktop app. It is not a Windows core component, so its filename alone cannot establish that it is safe. A legitimate copy should be inside the PureVPN installation folder under C:Program Files (x86), have a valid signature from the expected publisher, match your installed PureVPN version, and pass a Windows Security scan. A copy in C:Windows, System32, a temporary folder or another user-writable directory deserves investigation before you allow or delete it.

Where should a legitimate copy be located?
A secondary process reference identifies legitimate copies in a PureVPN subfolder beneath C:Program Files (x86). The exact subfolder name can vary with the product’s installer and version. The location matters more than the spelling of the filename: malware can copy a trusted-looking name into a different directory.

What security history should you know about?
A historical vulnerability, CVE-2018-7484, affected PureVPN Windows versions through 5.19.4.0. INCIBE-CERT reported that the installation directory was writable by Everyone and that the service, running as NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM, loaded DLLs through relative paths. That combination created a DLL-hijacking privilege-escalation condition.
The CVSS v3.1 base score was 7.8 (High), as reported by INCIBE-CERT in 2018. This record describes old affected versions; the available information does not establish which current PureVPN release first fixed the issue. Keep the application updated, verify the installation directory permissions and do not use the historical CVE as a filename-only verdict on a current file.
How do I fix purevpnservice.exe errors on Windows?
Work from the least disruptive check to the most disruptive repair. The sequence below separates a stopped service from a damaged installation, a blocked connection and a suspicious executable.
1. Confirm that the PureVPN service is running
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.

4. Perform a complete reinstall
Use a reinstall when the latest version is already installed, the service is missing, or updates do not replace a damaged component.
- Write down any settings you need to recreate, including preferred locations and protocol choices.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or the corresponding installed-apps list in Windows 10.
- Select PureVPN and choose Uninstall. Follow the prompts and restart Windows if requested.
- Download the current Windows installer from PureVPN’s official site. The installer is named
PureVPN setup.exe; do not obtain a replacement executable from a random file-download site. - Run the installer, complete setup, restart Windows, and verify that

7. Remove and recreate the PureVPN network adapter when the remote service cannot be reached

When should I stop troubleshooting and scan the computer?
Stop normal connection troubleshooting and scan before allowing, restoring or deleting the file if any of these conditions apply:
