What Is rdsaddin.exe? Is It Safe, and How to Fix rdsaddin.exe Errors on Windows

rdsaddin.exe is identified in available process documentation as the Microsoft Remote Desktop TSRDP Session Add-In. That identification is from a third-party process database, not a Microsoft page that documents every copy of the filename, so the name alone cannot prove that a file is genuine. A Windows copy in C:WindowsSystem32 may fit the expected pattern, while a copy in a user profile, Downloads folder or temporary directory needs investigation.

Do not delete the file just because it appears in Task Manager. Verify its complete path and digital signature, then troubleshoot the wider Remote Desktop stack: services, permissions, policy, listener, firewall, certificates, logs and recent updates. The steps below separate a legitimate Windows component from a masquerading executable and give a recovery path for client, server and post-update failures.

What is rdsaddin.exe?

The filename is associated with the Microsoft Remote Desktop add-in context, specifically the TSRDP Session Add-In. The process database that identifies it lists C:WindowsSystem32 and C:WindowsServicePackFilesi386 as expected locations. Those paths are useful historical heuristics, not a guarantee: malware can use the same basename, and a legitimate installation can differ by Windows edition, servicing state or architecture.

Microsoft documents the general Remote Desktop add-in architecture rather than this executable by name. Add-ins are registered under HKLMSystemCurrentControlSetControlTerminalServerAddins, where each entry has a Name value and a Type value. Seeing an add-in registration therefore explains why a Remote Desktop component may be present, but it does not authenticate the file you found.

What the filename does—and what is not established

The available identification connects rdsaddin.exe with Remote Desktop session functionality. It does not establish a universal version number, a normal CPU or memory baseline, a failure rate, or a supported standalone uninstall procedure. Treat those missing details as a reason to verify the individual file and the Windows build instead of relying on a name search.

Is rdsaddin.exe safe?

It can be a legitimate Windows component, but a basename is not an authenticity check. Microsoft explains that a digital signature confirms who created or distributed a file and that it has not been altered since signing; the signature itself does not guarantee that the file is safe. Check the path, signer, origin and surrounding behavior together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the complete path

  1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and select the Details tab.
  2. Right-click rdsaddin.exe and choose Open file location. If the option is unavailable, note the process command line in Task Manager’s column settings or use an administrator-approved process viewer.
  3. Copy the full path into your incident notes. A copy under C:WindowsSystem32 is consistent with the historical listing; a copy under a profile, Downloads folder, temporary directory or an unrelated application folder is unexpected and deserves isolation.
  4. Do not move, rename or delete the file while you are still determining whether a Remote Desktop service depends on it. Preserve the timestamp and file size if you may need to compare the machine with another endpoint.

Inspect the digital signature

  1. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and open Digital Signatures. Select the signer and choose Details to confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
  2. Compare the publisher with the organization you expect for a Windows Remote Desktop component. An absent signature, an invalid signature, an unfamiliar publisher or a signature that does not match the path should be treated as a security lead, not ignored as a cosmetic warning.
  3. Record the signer, certificate status, file version and path. A valid signature supports provenance, but continue with approved security scanning and origin checks because Microsoft explicitly cautions that signing is not a safety guarantee.

Be cautious with unexpected RDP files

If the process appeared after someone sent an RDP file or connection request, stop before opening another file from that message. Microsoft warns: Never open an RDP file you weren’t expecting, even if the email looks legitimate. An RDP file can request redirection of local resources such as the clipboard, drives or camera. Verify the sender and destination through a separate channel, and disable every redirection you do not need before connecting.

Can I delete rdsaddin.exe?

There is no source-backed removal procedure for this filename, so deletion is not a supported first step. Removing a legitimate component can break Remote Desktop sessions or leave an incomplete installation, while deleting a masquerading file without preserving evidence can make an investigation harder.

First isolate an unexpected copy from the network if your security procedure requires it, document its path and signature, and scan it with your organization’s approved security tooling. For a correctly signed Windows copy, repair the Remote Desktop configuration and operating-system servicing problem instead of deleting the executable. If an administrator or security team later confirms that the file is malicious, follow their quarantine and remediation process rather than substituting a manual deletion.

Why is rdsaddin.exe using CPU or causing a crash?

No authoritative source establishes a normal rdsaddin.exe CPU percentage or a filename-specific performance problem. A busy Remote Desktop session, a stalled listener, a policy conflict, a certificate failure, a damaged installation or a recent update can all present as a process error. Diagnose the connection path before attributing the symptom to the executable itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate a brief spike from a persistent fault

  • In Task Manager, note whether CPU use falls after the connection succeeds or the session ends. Record the time, user, host and exact error rather than relying on a single instantaneous percentage.
  • Check whether one client is affected or several users and hosts fail at the same time. A single-endpoint symptom points toward local state, permissions, firewall or file integrity; a multi-host pattern points toward services, policy, certificates, networking or an update.
  • Look for a matching application or system event at the same timestamp. A process crash without a connection failure is a different investigation from a listener that rejects every session.

What not to infer from CPU usage

High activity does not prove infection, and low activity does not prove authenticity. Do not download a replacement executable from an unverified site, add an exclusion to security software, or end the process repeatedly while a user is connected. Preserve the evidence and move through the Remote Desktop checks below.

How do I fix rdsaddin.exe errors on Windows?

Use this order: capture the symptom, verify the file, check both Remote Desktop services, validate protocol and access controls, inspect the listener and firewall, review certificates and logs, then check updates. The sequence works for errors described as a missing component, failed connection, sign-in rejection, frozen session or process crash.

1. Capture the exact symptom

  1. Write down the complete error text, not a paraphrase. Note whether the failure is a connection refusal, authentication problem, frozen session, immediate disconnect or process crash.
  2. Record the Windows edition and build on both the client and target, when the problem began, and whether anything changed immediately beforehand.
  3. Identify the scope: one user, one client, one host, multiple hosts, or an entire RDS deployment. Record the local time and time zone so event-log entries can be matched accurately.
  4. Keep a copy of any RDP file involved, but do not open an unexpected file merely to reproduce the error.

2. Verify the executable before repairing anything

Repeat the path and signature checks above for every copy of rdsaddin.exe you find. A legitimate-looking copy in System32 does not make a second copy in a temporary folder legitimate. If the path or signer is unexpected, involve your security or IT team and preserve the file’s origin, timestamps and alerts before making changes.

3. Check Remote Desktop Services on both ends

Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance specifically calls out Remote Desktop Services (TermService) and Remote Desktop Services UserMode Port Redirector (UmRdpService). Check the client and the target host, because a running service on one side cannot compensate for a stopped service on the other.

  1. Press Win+R, enter services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Remote Desktop Services and Remote Desktop Services UserMode Port Redirector. Confirm that each is running and note its Startup type and any error shown when you attempt to start it.
  3. From an elevated PowerShell window, you can record the same state with Get-Service TermService,UmRdpService. Save the output before changing a service so an administrator can compare the original state.
  4. If a service will not start, capture the exact Windows error and the corresponding event-log timestamp. Do not repeatedly force-start it without checking dependencies, policy and recent update changes.

4. Validate Remote Desktop, permissions and policy

  1. On the target, open Settings > System > Remote Desktop and confirm that Remote Desktop is enabled. Check the selected account list and ensure the user is authorized to connect.
  2. Confirm that the host is awake, reachable by name or address, and not waiting for a network profile or VPN connection. Test from the same network path the affected user uses.
  3. In managed environments, review Group Policy for settings that disable Remote Desktop, restrict who may log on through Remote Desktop Services, or override redirection and security settings. A local setting can appear correct while domain policy blocks the connection.
  4. Check the client and server protocol settings for compatibility. Avoid changing security levels blindly; record the existing policy, make one controlled change, and test a new connection.

5. Check the listener, port and firewall

A service can report as running while the RDP listener is unavailable. Confirm that the listener is present, that the target is listening on the configured RDP port, and that the host firewall and any network firewall permit that port.

  1. At the target, run qwinsta in an elevated Command Prompt and look for the RDP listener entry. If it is absent or reports an error, collect the output for the administrator.
  2. From the client, test the configured port with PowerShell’s Test-NetConnection command, for example Test-NetConnection server-name -Port 3389 when the deployment uses the default port. Replace the port with the one configured by your administrator; do not assume 3389 if it has been changed.
  3. Review inbound Windows Defender Firewall rules for Remote Desktop and check any upstream firewall, security group or VPN rule. A successful ping does not prove that the RDP port is reachable.
  4. If you change a firewall or port rule, document the old and new values and test from an authorized client. Avoid opening Remote Desktop broadly to the internet as a workaround.

6. Review certificates and event logs

Certificate or authentication problems can prevent a listener from completing a session even when the services are running. Microsoft documents checking the RDP self-signed certificate, recreating it when necessary, and collecting event logs as part of the troubleshooting path.

  1. Open Event Viewer with eventvwr.msc. Review the TerminalServices and RdpCoreTS logs around the recorded failure time, along with the System log for service or networking errors.
  2. On the target, inspect the certificate used by the RDP listener. Note its subject, expiration and private-key availability. Do not replace a certificate in production without following your organization’s certificate procedure.
  3. If Microsoft support or your administrator directs you to recreate the self-signed RDP certificate, export the relevant event details first, perform the change during an approved maintenance window, restart the affected service as instructed, and test a new connection.
  4. Save the event logs in an exportable format with the time zone and host name. A screenshot without timestamps is often insufficient to correlate a failed session.

7. Check for the September 2026 RDS update issue

Microsoft documented an RDS instability problem after Windows security updates released in September 2026. Reported symptoms include failed or stuck connections and unresponsive management tools. If your issue began after those updates, treat update inventory as a primary branch rather than assuming the executable is damaged.

  1. Record the installed cumulative and out-of-band update numbers on every affected endpoint or virtual machine, including the RDS roles installed.
  2. Check Microsoft’s current servicing guidance for the matching out-of-band update or a later cumulative update that addresses the issue for your Windows release. Apply it consistently to the affected clients and servers according to your change process.
  3. After servicing, test a new connection, sign-in, an existing-session reconnection, Microsoft Management Console tools, File Explorer access and the relevant event logs. A successful first login alone does not prove that the management-tool symptom is gone.
  4. If the problem remains, preserve the before-and-after update numbers and logs. Do not uninstall security updates indiscriminately; coordinate rollback decisions with your administrator.

8. Escalate with a complete evidence package

When the sequence does not resolve the error, send Microsoft support or your administrator the exact message, timestamps, client and server builds, installed RDS roles, service states, listener and port results, certificate observations, update numbers and the relevant TerminalServices, RdpCoreTS and System logs. Include the full rdsaddin.exe path and signature result if the filename is part of the report. This lets the next investigator distinguish a file-provenance issue from a deployment-wide RDS failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which troubleshooting path fits the symptom?

Situation First checks Typical scope Evidence to collect
One Windows client cannot connect Remote Desktop enabled on the host, user permission, network reachability, firewall and client state Client or local network Exact client error, host name and time of failure
Multiple users or hosts fail TermService, UmRdpService, listener, configured port, Group Policy and certificates Server or wider RDS deployment Service output, listener and port tests, policy results and event logs
Failure began after September 2026 updates Update inventory, matching out-of-band or later cumulative update, then service and log validation Updated endpoints, servers or virtual machines Update numbers, affected RDS roles and before-and-after logs
Unexpected executable path or signature Isolate according to security procedure, verify signer, scan with approved tooling and investigate origin Local host security Full path, signature result, file origin and security alerts

What should I do if rdsaddin.exe is missing or not found?

A “file not found” message does not prove that downloading a replacement is safe. First determine which component raised the message and whether the Remote Desktop services, listener and add-in registration are intact.

  1. Capture the complete dialog text, application name and time. A message from an unrelated program may mention rdsaddin.exe because it tried to load a missing dependency.
  2. Check the expected Windows locations and the file signature on another identically managed machine only as a comparison; do not copy an executable between systems without an approved Windows servicing or recovery procedure.
  3. Verify TermService, UmRdpService, the Remote Desktop setting, listener and event logs. A service or policy failure can look like a missing-file problem from the client.
  4. If Windows servicing, a role installation or an update left the component incomplete, use your organization’s supported Windows repair or RDS role-repair process and retain the build and update evidence for escalation.

How can an administrator investigate several affected hosts?

Start with a small comparison set: one working host, one failing host and the client used for reproduction. Compare Windows builds, update numbers, service states, listener output, configured ports, Group Policy results, certificate status and the same event-log channels. This minimizes guesswork and shows whether the fault follows a machine, a user, a network segment or a particular update.

  • Use a consistent timestamp standard and collect logs immediately after a reproducible failure.
  • Separate a server-side failure from a client-side failure by testing an unaffected client against the same host and the affected client against a known-good host.
  • Record every configuration change and test one new connection after each controlled change.
  • Do not distribute an unverified rdsaddin.exe copy or disable security controls merely to make a test connection work.

After the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut that can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, tune settings, clear temporary and cache files, and provide an app-crash log. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, with a free trial by category of at least two days before a paid subscription.

Frequently asked questions

Does a copy in System32 prove that rdsaddin.exe is genuine?

No. System32 is consistent with the historical location listing, but a malicious file can be placed there if an attacker has sufficient access. The signer, certificate status, file origin and behavior must agree before you treat the copy as trusted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can an RDP file really access my local clipboard or drives?

Yes, an RDP file can request redirection of local resources, including the clipboard, drives or camera. Do not open an unexpected file, and review redirection options before accepting a connection from a known sender.

Which logs are most useful when the listener fails?

Start with the TerminalServices and RdpCoreTS channels in Event Viewer, then correlate them with the System log and the exact failure time. Include the host name, time zone and update state when exporting the entries.

What information should I send to IT or Microsoft support?

Provide the full error text, client and server builds, scope of the outage, service and listener results, configured port, policy and certificate observations, update numbers, and exported logs. If rdsaddin.exe is central to the report, add its complete path and digital-signature result rather than only the filename.
