readerdc_en_hi_cra_install.exe appears to be an Adobe Reader download component, but the filename alone cannot prove that a copy on your PC is genuine or safe. An undated third-party process listing calls it “Adobe Download Manager” and associates it with Adobe Inc.; that is an attribution record, not an Adobe authenticity statement. Treat an unexpected copy as suspicious: do not open it, verify its digital signature, scan the file, and reinstall Reader only from Adobe’s official download page if necessary.
The safest repair depends on the message you see. “File not found,” an access-denied warning, a blocked download and an installer failure have different causes, but the sequence below covers each without weakening Windows security.

What is readerdc_en_hi_cra_install.exe?
The name is consistent with a component used while downloading or installing Adobe Acrobat Reader. The readerdc prefix resembles Adobe Reader DC naming, and a ProcessChecker entry labels the exact filename “Adobe Download Manager” with vendor Adobe Inc. That entry is undated and supplied by a third party, so it does not establish that every file with this name is published by Adobe.
The same listing records version 2.0.0.529s, a size of 122,837 bytes and an MD5 value. Those are properties of the copy examined by that site, not verified requirements for a current Reader release. There is no authoritative Adobe manifest tying this exact filename, hash or version to a current Reader installer.

Why a legitimate-looking name can still be dangerous
Executables can be renamed. A file delivered through an advertising redirect, an unsolicited email, a software mirror or a bundled installer may use a trusted product’s name while containing unwanted software. Windows therefore evaluates more than the filename: publisher signature, download reputation, antivirus results and the file’s origin all matter.
Is readerdc_en_hi_cra_install.exe a virus?
There is no basis to call every copy a virus, and there is no basis to declare an unverified copy safe. Microsoft’s SmartScreen documentation explains that a reputation warning is not conclusive proof of malware; however, an uncommon download or one without a valid signature deserves extra caution. A file that Defender identifies as malware or a potentially unwanted application should be quarantined or removed.
Check where the file came from
- Expected source: You intentionally started a Reader download from Adobe and the file is in the download location you selected.
- Questionable source: It arrived after clicking an advertisement, a pop-up, an email attachment, a file-sharing site or a third-party “driver” or “PDF” prompt.
- Unexpected presence: You never downloaded Reader, or the file appeared after another program was installed. Do not run it merely to find out what it does.
Check the publisher signature
In File Explorer, right-click the executable, choose Properties, and open Digital Signatures. A genuine signed file should show a publisher such as Adobe and a signature that Windows reports as valid when you select it and choose Details. A missing, invalid or unverifiable signature does not by itself prove malware, but it removes an important trust signal. If the tab is absent, treat that as a reason to scan rather than as confirmation of safety.
How should I safely inspect and scan the file?
Keep the file in place long enough to record its path and scan it, but do not double-click it. The following procedure avoids executing an unknown installer.
- Record the full path. In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, and note the location, size and creation date. If an error names a different path, record that path too.
- Scan only the file first. Right-click it and select Show more options if required, then choose Scan with Microsoft Defender. Wait for the result before taking any action that launches the executable.
- Act on a detection. If Defender or another reputable antivirus reports malware or a potentially unwanted application, select quarantine or removal. A potentially unwanted application remains on the system until you choose an action; closing the notification is not the same as cleaning it.
- Do not create an exclusion. Adding the installer to Defender’s exclusions can stop real-time checks for that file or process. Do not disable Defender simply to make an installer run.
What to do if the scan is clean
A clean file-level result means only that the scanner did not detect a known threat at that time; it does not authenticate the download. Recheck the signature and provenance. If both are credible and you deliberately downloaded Reader, you can retry installation. If the origin is uncertain, delete the file and obtain a fresh installer from Adobe instead.

Which broader Windows scans should I run?
Use broader scans when the file was detected, the computer shows unexplained symptoms, or detections return after removal.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Full Microsoft Defender scan
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection, then choose Scan options.
- Update security intelligence if an update is offered, select Full scan, and start it.
- Review the protection history and quarantine or remove every confirmed threat.
A full scan checks substantially more of the system than a single-file scan and can take considerably longer, especially on large drives.
Microsoft Defender Offline
If detections persist, the process returns after reboot, or you suspect an active program is interfering with security tools, use Microsoft Defender Offline from the same Scan options page. Windows restarts into a separate scanning environment before the normal desktop loads, which can expose threats that hide while Windows is running. Save work first because the restart is automatic.
Microsoft Safety Scanner
Safety Scanner is a separate, manual Microsoft utility that can provide another check. Download a fresh copy for each scan: Microsoft says a copy expires 10 days after download. It is not a replacement for real-time protection, and a scan result should be interpreted alongside Defender’s protection history.
How do I remove an unwanted installation or bundled program?
If the executable ran or another application appeared with it, remove the associated software after scanning.

Do not remove the legitimate Reader application solely because this filename appeared. Base the decision on the signer, the source, Defender’s result and whether you intentionally installed the software.
How do I reinstall Adobe Reader without reusing the suspicious file?
When the installer is missing, damaged, blocked or untrusted, the clean fix is to discard that copy and download a new one from Adobe’s official page: https://get.adobe.com/reader/.
- Quarantine or delete the untrusted executable after recording any detection details you may need for support.
- Open the Adobe page by typing the address yourself or using a trusted bookmark. Avoid search advertisements and download mirrors.
- Save the installer to a known folder, then verify its digital signature and scan it before running.
- Close other installers and applications that may lock Reader files.
- Run the new installer with a standard account. Approve User Account Control only if the publisher and path are what you expect.
- Restart Windows after installation and open Reader from the Start menu, not from an old shortcut pointing to the removed file.
What do common readerdc_en_hi_cra_install.exe errors mean?
The filename does not identify one specific Windows error. Match the message to the likely cause instead of applying a generic DLL download or registry fix.
“File not found” or “Windows cannot find…”
The original download may have been deleted, quarantined, moved or referenced by a stale shortcut. Check Defender’s protection history, remove the old shortcut or scheduled task if present, and reinstall Reader from Adobe. Never download a replacement DLL from a random site to satisfy the message.

“Access is denied” or a blocked installer
Windows may be blocking an untrusted download, or another security product may have quarantined it. Check the file’s Properties for an Unblock option only when you trust the source and the signature; do not bypass a malware detection. If the file is in a protected folder, download a fresh installer to your user Downloads folder and run it after verification.

“This app can’t run on your PC”
The download may be corrupt, incompatible with the Windows edition or not a real Reader installer. Delete it, confirm that Windows is supported by the current Reader release, and obtain a fresh installer directly from Adobe.
Installation rolls back or stops partway through
Possible causes include a damaged download, an existing Reader process, insufficient permissions, pending Windows restarts or interference from another installer. Restart Windows, close Reader and other installation programs, ensure adequate free disk space, and retry with a newly downloaded package. If security software reports a threat, stop troubleshooting the installation and complete malware cleanup first.
Repeated pop-ups or high CPU use after the file ran
Disconnect from sensitive accounts if you suspect compromise, preserve the detection name and path, and run a full scan followed by Defender Offline when needed. Continued detections after cleanup justify qualified incident-response assistance; do not keep launching the executable to reproduce the symptom.

Yes, you can delete the installer after you have scanned it and no longer need it. Deleting an installer does not uninstall Adobe Reader. If Defender has flagged it, use quarantine or removal first, then empty the Recycle Bin and run a follow-up scan. If the file is locked, restart Windows and try again; do not force deletion by disabling security protections.

Before removal, record the exact error text, full file path, file size, creation date, signature status, Defender detection name and whether the executable was ever opened. Screenshots of the Properties and protection-history pages can help an administrator or incident-response specialist distinguish a missing installer from a security event. Do not upload the executable publicly or send it to a helper unless your organization’s security process permits that.

FAQ
Does Adobe publish a current hash for this exact filename?
No authoritative current Adobe hash, prevalence figure or release manifest for readerdc_en_hi_cra_install.exe is established here. The version, size and MD5 shown by the undated third-party listing should not be used as an installation trust anchor.
Will SmartScreen always block a malicious copy?
No. SmartScreen reputation warnings are informative risk signals, not a guarantee that a file is safe or malicious. Combine the warning with the source, signature and antivirus results.
Should I keep the installer after Reader is installed?
Usually not. Once installation succeeds, you can delete the installer; keep it only if your organization requires an offline reinstall copy and you have verified its provenance and signature.
What if Defender says “potentially unwanted application” instead of malware?
Select quarantine or removal rather than dismissing the alert. Microsoft notes that a PUA remains present until an action is chosen, and you should investigate what installed it and whether other unwanted programs arrived with it.
