realtimesync.exe is normally RealTimeSync, the folder-monitoring component installed with FreeFileSync. It watches selected local, removable, or network directories for operating-system change notifications and runs a configured command—often a FreeFileSync batch job—after the changes have been idle for a set period. The file is credible when it comes from the FreeFileSync installation folder and carries the expected publisher signature; a filename by itself proves nothing, because malware can use the same name.
To decide whether your copy is safe, verify its full path, digital signature, provenance and hash, then scan it with updated Microsoft Defender. Most operating problems come from an unavailable monitored path, a bad or interactive command, recursive configuration, unreliable network notifications, or a startup task that runs under the wrong account.

What does realtimesync.exe do?
RealTimeSync is a Windows executable supplied with FreeFileSync. The official manual describes its operation precisely: “RealTimeSync executes a command line every time it detects changes in a monitored directory.” It is an event-driven monitor, not a program that repeatedly scans every file on a timer.
Windows sends change notifications for the folders you select. RealTimeSync waits until the configured idle period has elapsed, then launches the command saved in its real-time configuration. That command commonly opens a FreeFileSync batch job, but it can be another non-interactive command that you intentionally configured.

Which locations can it monitor?
- Ordinary folders on an internal drive.
- Removable media, provided the volume is available when monitoring starts.
- UNC paths and other network locations, subject to the network provider supplying usable change notifications.
- Paths that are temporarily unavailable; RealTimeSync waits for them to become available rather than treating every absence as a program failure.
A file ending in .ffs_real starts monitoring immediately when opened. You can open an .ffs_batch file in RealTimeSync and convert it into a real-time configuration; the documented defaults include a 10-second idle delay. While the configured command is running, monitoring is temporarily inactive, so changes made during that interval may be handled by the batch job or detected only after monitoring resumes.
Is realtimesync.exe safe?
Usually, yes—when it is the copy installed with FreeFileSync. Safety depends on the file’s location, signer and origin, not on the spelling of the filename. A malicious program can name itself realtimesync.exe, especially when it is placed in an unexpected download, temporary, Windows, or system directory.

To inspect the path, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, open Task Manager, choose the Details tab, right-click realtimesync.exe, and select Open file location. In that folder, right-click the file, choose Properties, and examine Digital Signatures. A signature that Windows can validate is useful evidence, but it does not replace a malware scan.
How strong is the available scan evidence?
A herdProtect record dated 2026-07-31 reported 0/68 scanner detections for a recorded RealTimeSync 8.8 x64 sample. Another record dated 2026-05-17 reported 0/68 scanner detections for RealTimeSync 8.1. Those results support the legitimacy of those specific, signed samples; they do not certify every file carrying the name, nor do they prove that a newly modified copy is clean.
Why is realtimesync.exe running on my PC?
It normally runs because a RealTimeSync configuration was opened manually, placed in the Windows Startup folder, or launched by Task Scheduler. A shortcut or task often passes an .ffs_real file as its argument, which tells the executable which directories and command to use.

To identify the trigger, inspect Task Manager → Startup apps, the user Startup folder, and Task Scheduler Library. Disable only an entry you recognize, and first record its command and configuration path so you can restore it. If the process starts with no known FreeFileSync installation or from an anomalous directory, stop treating it as a normal startup item and follow the security checks above.
How do I fix realtimesync.exe errors?
Work through the configuration and environment in order. The following procedure fixes the documented failure modes without deleting a possibly legitimate synchronization setup.
1. Confirm that every monitored folder is available
- Open the
.ffs_realconfiguration in RealTimeSync. - Check each local path, drive letter, UNC path, removable disk and network share in File Explorer.
- Reconnect a removable drive or map the required network share before starting monitoring.
- If a drive letter changes between sessions, use a stable volume label or a path that does not depend on a changing letter where your setup permits it.
- Start monitoring again and make a small test-file change in a monitored folder.
RealTimeSync is designed to wait for unavailable directories. A missing volume can therefore look like a hung process even though the program is waiting for the location to return.
2. Validate the command line and make it non-interactive
- In the real-time configuration, inspect the command that runs after the idle delay.
- Ensure it launches the intended FreeFileSync batch job or another command that can finish without a user prompt.
- Remove confirmation dialogs, password prompts and other pop-ups from the batch configuration where possible.
- Run the same command manually from a Command Prompt to expose quoting, permission or missing-file errors.
- After the manual run succeeds, make one controlled change in the monitored folder and watch for the command to start.
An interactive dialog can block the command while RealTimeSync appears unresponsive. Testing the exact command outside the monitor separates a command problem from a notification problem.
3. Rule out recursive RealTimeSync configuration
A .ffs_real file must call FreeFileSync or the intended task, not RealTimeSync.exe itself. If the command starts RealTimeSync again, the second instance creates another monitor and can lead to repeated launches, confusing windows or resource use.

- Replace any reference to
RealTimeSync.exewith the intended FreeFileSync batch executable or batch file. - Save the configuration under a clear name and close extra RealTimeSync instances in Task Manager.
- Retest with one file change.
4. Test local monitoring when a network share does not react
The manual notes that some network drivers do not provide usable change notifications. When a network job appears silent, create a temporary local test folder and point a copy of the configuration at it.
- If local monitoring works, investigate the share’s availability, permissions, network provider and driver rather than repeatedly reinstalling RealTimeSync.
- If both local and network tests fail, recheck the command and configuration path first.
- For a share that cannot provide reliable notifications, use a scheduled synchronization fallback that polls at a defined interval instead of relying on real-time events.
5. Start it correctly at sign-in
For a user-session launch, use the documented command form:

shell:startup, and press Enter. - Create a shortcut in that folder.
- Set the shortcut target to the quoted command, changing both paths to your installation and configuration.
- Sign out and back in, then verify in Task Manager that the expected path is running.
For an always-running process, create a Task Scheduler task with the same command and trigger it at system startup. Select an account that has permission to read and write every monitored path, especially network shares. A task that runs under a different account can fail even when the same command works interactively.
6. Repair a suspicious or damaged installation
- Do not overwrite or delete a suspicious copy before preserving its path, signature details and hash for investigation.
- Update Microsoft Defender security intelligence and run a Full scan.
- If the file returns, cannot be quarantined, or security software cannot operate normally, restart into Microsoft Defender Offline scan and scan before Windows loads fully.
- Remove FreeFileSync through Settings → Apps → Installed apps only after your synchronization configurations and logs are backed up.
- Obtain a fresh installer from the official FreeFileSync distribution, verify its signature and any published release hash, and recreate the
.ffs_realshortcut or scheduled task.
Microsoft describes the Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) as complementary to antivirus protection, not a replacement for full antivirus. Keep Defender active even when the file appears legitimate.

A hash from RealTimeSync 8.1 cannot validate an 8.8 binary, and a match is meaningful only when the reference came from the publisher for that exact release.
8. What to do when the file is clearly not the FreeFileSync copy
Disconnect the computer from networks if you suspect active malicious behavior, avoid opening the file, and submit it to your security team or antivirus quarantine workflow. Do not replace it with a downloaded file of the same name. After a full or offline scan, review startup entries, scheduled tasks and recently installed software for the mechanism that launched it.
